Africa: One of AB InBev’s most obvious gains from acquiring SABMiller will be gaining the leading position on the African market
|
Africa is Budweiser’s lost continent. For SABMiller, it is the jewel in the crown, The New York Times reported on September 25.
While Anheuser-Busch InBev is basically absent, Africa generated 28 percent of SABMiller’s revenue and 30 percent of its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization last year. That is the key to a potential offer by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the Budweiser brewer, for SABMiller, its $89 billion rival.
Macroeconomic trends, and shifting African drinking habits, underpin SABMiller’s strength in Africa. For one thing, the population is growing across Africa. SABMiller forecast the rise at 2.6 percent this year. And it said that gross domestic product per capita was rising 5.4 percent – around twice the global average.
The beer story is even stronger. Africa’s annual average per-capita consumption of beer is in line with the annual global average, which is around 45 litres a head. Africans drink nine litres of branded beers a head, and much of the rest of their alcohol consumption comes from illicit or homemade liquor. As per-capita wealth rises, so does the chance that more Africans will drink more branded beer. Governments might even help that shift because branded beers, unlike the so-called informal brews, bring tax revenue.

Japan & Australia: Japan’s Asahi buys Australian craft brewer Mountain Goat
|
Japanese beer giant Asahi has scooped up its second Australian boutique brewer in as many years buying Melbourne-based brewer Mountain Goat, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on September 28.
The multinational beverage company's purchase of Mountain Goat, launched in 1997, continues the consolidation that has swept through the craft beer sector.
It comes after Asahi bought the Cricketers Arms brand, which it produces at a microbrewery at Laverton in Melbourne's west, in April 2013.
Cam Hines and David Bonighton founded Mountain Goat after "cranking out" home brews in Mr Bonighton's backyard in the early 1990s.
The pair said in a joint statement they would be "sticking around" at Mountain Goat, and had formed a good working relationship with Asahi.
"We've been contract partners with Asahi for three years now, and with their expert help our beer has grown in demand, expanded nationally, and found a special place with beer lovers," Mr Hines and Mr Bonighton said.
"We are confident that with Asahi on board, we will be able to convert many more people to craft beer than we could do on our own."
The pair said the sale would allow them to focus more on brewing beer and their aim of continuously improving quality.
"This was a key

The Philippines: Philippines Katipunan Craft Ales toasting rapid growth
|
When most people think of products that represent the Philippines on the world stage, few of them arrive at beer. Brett Lim is not one of them, Rappler reported on September 27.
“Filipinos should be proud of Filipino products that can stand up against global competition. I believe beer is one of those products,” said Lim, who co-founded craft beermaker Katipunan Craft Ales more than 3 years ago.
Lim said that plenty of local craft beers are world-class. As proof, Katipunan Craft Ales gets inquiries from many countries outside of the Philippines. He was in Hong Kong recently, where he was making small talk with the staff at a local craft beer bar. After mentioning that he was a part of the team behind Katipunan Craft Ales, the bartender’s face lit up.
“The bartender said he had tried ours before,” Lim said. “One of their patrons brought back a bottle from Manila for them to try. He said there were requests for them to stock us there.”
This anecdote highlights why Lim and his co-founding team decided to establish Katipunan Craft Ales. While they were toying with different ideas, they liked the universal appeal of beer. As it did for them, beer could connect

Vietnam: Ministry of Industry and Trade appoints new chairman at Sabeco
|
The Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade has appointed Vo Thanh Ha, former chief of the ministry office and secretary to the minister, as chairman of Saigon Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Corporation (Sabeco), representing the state ownership in this business, DealstreetAsia reported on September 29.
The news was initially reported by the Bao Dau tu (Investment Newspaper).
Ha replaces Phan Dang Tuat, the former 58-year-old chairman, who resigned last month. Bui Ngoc Hanh, a board member at Sabeco, then temporarily chaired the company.
Ha, born in 1974, used to head the ministry office from February 2015. Prior to that position, he served as the minister of industry and trade’s secretary.
Earlier in February this year, the ministry also appointed Vu Quang Hai, 29, to be the brewer’s deputy CEO and board member.
“The selection of young people for the leading roles in Vietnam’s largest beer producer implies that the ministry wants to see innovative changes from the corporation,” the Bao Dau tu report commented.
The state-owned brewer is facing aggressive competition from local private and foreign brands. Sabeco still leads the local market which saw production of around 1.4 billion litres of beer in 2015. However, the distance between Sabeco and foreign brands such as Heineken
