Brewery news South Africa: South African shareholders of SABMiller to fight for continued Johannesburg stock market listing
South African shareholders of SABMiller are prepared to fight for a continued Johannesburg stock market listing if the brewer gets taken over by Anheuser-Busch InBev so they can benefit from the future growth of a new global drinks giant, Reuters Africa reported on October 1.

AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, said last month it had approached SABMiller, the number two, about a takeover that would create a group with a market value of around $275 billion.

Whether or not the merged entity will stay listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, as SABMiller is now, will be a key consideration for South African-based funds required to limit their exposure to international stocks.

SABMiller, with a market capitalisation of 1.3 trillion rand ($94.20 billion), is the largest company on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, accounting for 12 percent of its value. The company employs more than 24,000 people in Africa.

Its departure would be a major blow to the exchange, which has been hurt by a global commodities rout.

The chief executive of Public Investment Corp (PIC), a state-owned South African pension fund and SABMiller's fourth-largest shareholder, said on October 1 that SABMiller must remain listed on the Johannesburg exchange after any takeover.

"SAB is a very important ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev to invest into its New York plant to allow for craft beer production
Anheuser-Busch InBev will invest $62 million to upgrade equipment and allow for craft beer production at its facility in Baldwinsville, New York, Auburn Citizen reported on October 1.

With the investment, the company will retain 443 jobs at the plant.

To aid Anheuser-Busch's efforts, Empire State Development has offered to provide $2 million in tax credits.

The announcement was made on September 30 by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who visited Anheuser-Busch and sampled beer.

"This investment will keep hundreds of jobs and help Anheuser-Busch stay and grow right here in New York," Cuomo said. "Anheuser-Busch is a major driver of economic activity across this state and I am proud that this investment will set the stage for future growth in this key industry."

The company's 1.5 million-square foot facility produces more than 65 brands and has the capacity to ship 180 trucks a day.

Pete Kraemer, vice president of supply and the head brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch, said it's important for the company to retain jobs at the Baldwinsville brewery.

"Our employees all work hard to produce the great beers our customers demand and this demonstrates our commitment to the region," he said.

Brewery news Nigeria: Heineken’s Nigerian Breweries to sell 100 bln naira debt to boost liquidity
Nigerian Breweries Plc, the West African nation’s largest brewer, said it plans to sell 100 billion naira ($502 million) in debt to boost liquidity and support growth even as lower crude prices impact spending in the continent’s most populous country, Bloomberg reported on September 30.

The debt sale, expected by Oct. 8, will enable the company to diversify its funding and attract non-bank investors, Finance Director Mark Rutten said in an e-mailed statement.

The move demonstrates the Heineken N.V unit’s commitment to Nigeria, where it owns 11 breweries, Managing Director Nicolaas Vervelde said.

The fundraising comes as Nigeria suffers from lower crude prices, causing slower economic growth and declining government revenues. Lagos-based Nigerian Breweries reported lower first-half profit in July, while smaller competitor Guinness Nigeria Plc said earlier this month that the economic situation had hurt consumption of pricier beer brands.

Brewery news Malawi: Carlsberg Malawi raises prices
Following the depreciation of kwacha in the country, Carlsberg Malawi Limited has raised the price of beverages, Malawi24 reported on October 1.

The increase is in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic products.

According to Carlsberg Malawi Marketing officials, the rise is between 12 percent to 18 percent.

The two litres Sobo Squash has jumped from Mk1, 200 to Mk1,500 while the 300ml Carlsberg Green has been raised from Mk 400 to Mk450.

Drinks like Fanta, Sprite and Coca-Cola are going at Mk200 from Mk 140.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Beverages reduces prices for its lagers to offset softening demand
Zimbabwe’s Delta Beverages has slashed prices for its lager beers by between five and 10 cents from October 1 to offset softening demand, New Zimbabwe reported.

“The price of the popular pint and quart packs has been reduced from $0.90 to $0.80 and $1.55 to $1.50, respectively.

“All other brands and pack prices remain unchanged,” the listed brewer said in a statement.

However, all other brands and pack prices remain unchanged.

The general manager for the Lager beer business unit, Munyaradzi Nyandoro said the cuts will improve affordability.

“It is our sincere hope that our consumers will be happy with the early cheer ahead of the festive season,” he said.

Delta, 38 percent owned by global brewing giant SABMiller, has been registering reduced sales in the past two years due to falling disposable incomes that are forcing drinkers to find alternatives to lagers.

The company reported a four percent decline in revenue to $576.6 million for the full year to March 2015 on depressed sales from both its sparkling drinks and larger beers.

Lager beer volumes were down 17 percent on prior year while soft drinks volumes, comprising both sparkling and alternative beverages, slumped six percent on prior year.

Sorghum beer sales were up eight percent on prior year ...More info on site

Barley news USA & Canada: CHS Inc may be interested in Glencore’s Canadian grain handling assets only at discounted price
U.S. farm cooperative and grains trader CHS Inc would be interested in the Canadian grain handling assets of embattled commodities trader Glencore, but only if they came at a discounted price, CHS Chief Executive Carl Casale said in an exclusive interview to Reuters on September 30.

As part of a debt-reduction plan, Swiss-based Glencore has said it could sell a minority stake in its agricultural business, which includes assets from its 2012 purchase of Canada's largest grain handler Viterra. Analysts say all of Glencore's agricultural assets could be on the trading block.

While Casale said CHS isn't actively looking for such assets right now, CHS would "certainly take a look and see if there's an opportunity" to fill gaps in its Canadian portfolio if Glencore were to sell off its stake.

However, he said, "It also has to meet our return hurdles or we won't be a buyer."

A presence in one of the world's top spring wheat producers and major exporter of crops such as barley and canola has been high on the wish lists of multinational grain traders since the disbanding of the world's last major crop marketing monopoly in 2012.

Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota-based CHS has been actively bolstering its core agriculture ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Wheat export tax cut to level previously proposed by government
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed an order to cut a wheat export tax from October 1 to a level previously proposed by the government, a statement on the government's website showed on September 30.

Russian wheat exports have been constrained by the tax, which has prevented exporters from fully benefitting from the weaker rouble and a large grain crop.

"The accepted decision will allow to support Russia's exportable grain surplus, to secure the balance of the domestic agricultural market and the required profitability level of grain producers," the government said in the statement on www.government.ru.

The new duty formula is set at 50 percent of the customs price minus 6,500 roubles ($99) per ton but not less than 10 roubles per ton, it added.

These changes in the formula were earlier proposed by the government and were widely expected by market players to be approved.

The previous tax formula was set at 50 percent of the customs price minus 5,500 roubles per ton but not less than 50 roubles per ton.

The government statement said nothing about prices for the state restocking programme. The Agriculture Ministry has previously proposed raising them.
