Possible character impact compounds in the hop varieties Citra®, Centennial and Nelson Sauvin

ABSTRACT
To find this was the goal of this US research team. Using AEDA and GC-Olfactometry they found myrcene and alpha-pinene to have the highest FD (Flavour Dilution) Factor in the nonpolar fraction, hence to be of importance. In the polar fraction they found geraniol and linalool but also isovaleric acid and vanillin plus a sulfur component to have the highest FD factors. The sulfur component was identified as S-methyl methanethiosulfonate. The latter compound still needs to be confirmed. Even with this identification, the uniqueness of these three hop varieties cannot be explained.

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors says sales jumped after it switched 32-ounce and 40-ounce beer bottles from glass to plastic
MillerCoors LLC saw a jump in sales when it switched 32-ounce and 40-ounce beer bottles from glass to plastic in 2014, Waste Dive reported on October 6.

Jonah Smith, the company's sustainability manager for policy and reporting, said about 1% of sales are through plastic bottles, and that number could increase, though it's unsure when. Most beer comes in aluminum cans and glass bottles.

The packaging switch cut the products’ carbon footprint by 25%, saving tens of millions of dollars, Smith told the Plastic Caps & Closures Conference in Itasca, IL. Container weight was reduced by about a pound for each bottle, lowering the tonnage of products that distributors ship.

Smith said the use of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles will increase "within 10 to 15 years ... as more MRFs, materials recovery facilities, improve their technologies in how best to recycle PET."

Brewery news USA, WA: Pacific Brewing announces plans to acquire American Brewing
Tacoma's Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. just announced a deal to acquire Edmonds-based American Brewing Company.

A blog post from Pacific Brewing announces the pending deal, and shares some of the possibilities they see in the merger, both in terms of efficiencies and reach, and creative beer potential.

“We have been working towards expanding our brewing operations and our goal has always been to invest in a production brewery,” explains PB&M co-owner Steve Navarro. “This deal gives us the opportunity to increase our production capacity in the near term and bring our beers to a more diverse and widespread market.”

Both breweries and tap rooms will be staying put, and the leaders of both are enthusiastically positive about the future.

Neil Fallon, CEO of American Brewing Company, says the brewery will be in good hands.

“We built this brewery from the ground up, and appreciate that it will continue to be operated by another local craft brewery that shares our values in producing award winning craft beers. “

Navarro, who just celebrated the first anniversary of Pacific Brewing puts it succinctly: “This is going to be a lot of fun.”

Brewery news USA: Pabst Brewing establishes Jacob Best Imports import-beer division
As Pabst Brewing adds Tsingtao to its beer portfolio, it has created a new division called Jacob Best Imports to be led by former vice president of national accounts Mark Beatty, CSPnet.com reported on October 5.

The new division is named after Jacob Best Sr., a German-American brewer who, in 1844, founded what would later become the Pabst Brewing Co. in Milwaukee.

As president and general manager of Jacob Best Imports, Beatty will oversee the sales and distribution of Tsingtao Beer, which Pabst Brewing added to its portfolio on July 1. He'll also be tasked with building an import portfolio for Pabst Brewing, a new venture for the growing brewer.

Beatty will build brand-development and market-activation teams to support and grow the company's import business. He will work out of Dallas and report to Pabst Brewing‘s CEO Eugene Kashper. Before joining Pabst Brewing in 2011, he was in national accounts with Heineken USA for eight years.

Brian Smith, formerly national sales leader for Mark Anthony Brands, will fill Beatty's previous position as vice president of national accounts. He will be in charge of planning and execution within the national accounts organization and growing Pabst Brewing's business with chain customers. He will report to Bruce ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Constellation Brands unveils first craft beer
Life is good these days for Constellation Brands, as American beer drinkers have a seemingly unquenchable thirst for Mexican beers, Chicago Tribune reported on October 6.

Now it's jumping into the craft beer game, teaming up with Chicago celebrity chef Rick Bayless for a line of Mexican-inspired beers called Tocayo Brewing Company.

All this comes as Constellation Brands, which reported its fiscal second-quarter performance on October 7, could become the country's second-largest beer company, should AB InBev indeed make a formal offer for — and win — SABMiller, as has been reported.

Recently, Constellation Brands executives were thinking in smaller terms about Tocayo Hominy White Ale, their first craft beer, to be unveiled this week. The plan is to market the beer only on draft early on and grow the brand gradually in Chicago, said Bill Hackett, Constellation Brands’s executive vice president and president of the beer division.

"I think it's going to do very well. Our challenge is going to be can we (produce) enough of it. That's a great challenge to have," Hackett said.

Mexican imports and craft beers have surged in recent years, as sales of domestic mainstream beers continue to decline. In such a climate, Constellation Brands's recent success has been ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VT: Otter Creek Brewing Co. increasing production and distribution in Middlebury
Continued success is leading one company in Middlebury to expand their facility. Otter Creek Brewing is increasing its production and distribution reach across the country, My Champlain Valley FOX44 & ABC22 reported on October 5.

With a growing following, craft beer has become almost a religious experience for some in the Green Mountain State. “Bless oh lord this creature beer. Which thou has deigned to produce from the fat of grain. That it may be a salutary remedy to the human race,” professed Father William Beaudin, Pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Middlebury.

As the industry experiences continued success, companies like Otter Creek Brewing are using that blessing to expand. “We've been here for 25 years, but really it's finally blown wide-open. There's a lot of energy in the building, a lot of energy in the industry. We’re excited to be a part of it,” said Dan Fulham, CEO of Otter Creek Brewing.

The company is following up a 2010 expansion with another 8 thousand square foot addition. The extra space will allow the brewery to increase production from 65 thousand barrels of beer a year to more than 200 thousand barrels annually. Original founder, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA & ID: Mother Earth Brew Co. to build large production facility in Nampa by June
The sixth largest brewer in California’s beer-soaked San Diego County will open a 40,000-square-foot brewery and tasting room in Nampa next year, The Idaho Statesman reported on October 6.

Mother Earth Brew Co. plans to be up and running at 1428 Madison St., in Nampa, by June of 2016, founder Daniel Love said.

The Nampa brewhouse — larger than Mother Earth Brew’s original one in Vista, Calif. — will be a four-vessel, 40-barrel operation that could be expanded to produce 100,000 barrels annually. The facility also will have a canning line and corporate offices.

Mother Earth Brew’s operational scale in Nampa appears similar to plans from the Gem State’s largest brewery, Payette Brewing Co. of Garden City. In spring 2016, Payette plans to open a four-vessel, 60-barrel brewhouse in a 32,000-square-foot building at 733 S. Pioneer St. in Boise. Its eventual production potential could top 100,000 barrels annually.

“One of the reasons we chose Boise is it has a fantastic craft beer scene going,” said Love, who founded Mother Earth Brew in 2008. “I want to catch the wave.”

One of 115 licensed brewing entities in San Diego County, Mother Earth Brew originally opened in a space that was just more than 2,000 square feet. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Fifty West Brewery to open additional brewing facility in Cincinnati by spring
A popular Cincinnati craft brewery has unveiled a major expansion plan, WKRC TV Cincinnati reported on October 3.

Fifty West Brewery on Wooster Pike in Cincinnati plans to take over the Hahana Beach property.

They'll invest $1.5 million in improvements.

The additional brewing facility will include bigger tanks to expand Fifty West Brewery's capacity to serve and supply local bars and restaurants.

The owners hope to have it open sometime next spring.

Brewery news USA, NJ: Krogh’s Brewing Co. to open in Newton by June 2016
The owner of Krogh’s Restaurant & Brew Pub in Sparta is closer to opening a craft brewery after the Newton Town Council approved an escrow account to cover town fees on September 28 meeting, Daily Record reported on October 4.

Specifically, Krogh Brewing’s owner Bob Fuchs provided $8,500 for “municipal undertakings” for town officials to begin working on changes to allow the brewery - Krogh’s Brewing Co. - to move into the building and eventually commence production.

A popular brew pub and restaurant in the Lake Mohawk section of Sparta, Krogh’s Brewing was established in 1923 but didn’t begin brewing its own beer until 1999. But for the last decade, Fuchs said they’ve been brewing at maximum production.

“We’ve been selling out of our beer,” Fuchs said. “We can’t meet the demand.”

Which is why Fuchs said the primary recipient of Krogh’s Brewing Co. will be the restaurant and brew pub of the same name.

“We’re going to sell it right back to the restaurant and offer more taps,” Fuchs said. “The young market loves selection and change.”

Currently, Krogh’s Brewing offers seven flagship beers and some rotating seasonals. Fuchs said he hopes to increase production ten-fold to support about 12 to 14 Krogh’s Brewing ...More info on site

Barley news Switzerland & France & Germany: Ameropa and Vivescia terminate negotiations on sale of malting barley trader Interbrau
Swiss grain trading group Ameropa said on September 28 it would not go ahead with the sale of German malting barley trader Interbrau GmbH to French co-operative group Vivescia, as conditions for the deal had not been met.

The companies entered into an agreement in mid-July for the takeover of Interbrau by Vivescia, parent of the world’s biggest maltster Malteurop, for an undisclosed amount. Ameropa said the deal was still subject to certain conditions.

“These conditions have failed to materialize, and the parties have therefore terminated their negotiations,” it said in a statement without giving further details.

Ameropa is among the leading grain traders in central and Eastern Europe. The company had said in July the deal with Vivescia came as it was making sizeable investments to enhance its grain origination infrastructure, including the construction of a new port terminal at Constanta in Romania.

“Whereas we believe that the transaction could have been beneficial to all parties involved, we are no less pleased that Interbrau will remain a member of the Ameropa Group and we shall continue to give it our full support,” the company said.

Interbrau specializes in international malting barley trading and logistics, and operates in Europe, Latin America, Asia, Australia and Canada.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corporations says lager volumes return to growth in Q2
Delta Corporations Limited, the Zimbabwean brewer that’s the southern African nation’s biggest company by market value, said lager volumes returned to growth in the second quarter as price cuts and a shift by drinkers to cheaper brands boosted consumption, The Zimbabwe Daily reported on October 6.

Volumes of the alcoholic beverage gained 5 percent in the three months through September, compared with a 29 percent fall in the same period a year earlier, the unit of London-based SABMiller Plc said in an e-mailed statement on October 6. Total revenue fell 6 percent in the period, as lower prices and a 14 percent slump in sales of sparkling drinks weighed.

“Price adjustments were implemented to stimulate volume, with particular focus on core lager which remains in decline,” the Harare-based company said. “The trading environment remains challenging.”

Delta lowered the price of a pint of lager to 80 cents from 90 cents this month, the second price cut this year. Zimbabwean consumer spending has been weak amid the country’s worst economic crisis since 2008, as businesses battle tight liquidity and deflation, while the government struggles to pay civil-service wages on time.

Brewery news Tanzania: Tanzania Breweries Limited producing greener beer at its Mwanza plant
Green beer may not sound too appealing, but in Mwanza, Tanzania, it's going down a treat. A locally produced "greener" brew not only slakes thirst but is reducing the carbon footprint of the country's second largest city, Mail Online reported on October 6.

Tanzania Breweries Limited is tapping biomass energy to produce more sustainable beer while cutting its fuel costs.

"We have adopted new technology which has enabled us to use rice husks as fuel for our boilers instead of heavy furnace oil," said Sunday Kidolezi, manager for the firm's Mwanza utility in the north of the East African country.

The husks used to generate electricity are considered a waste product by local farmers. Growers tend to leave them piled in huge mounds, burn them outdoors or dump them in the forest, making them a source of climate-changing carbon emissions.

According to Kidolezi, more than 60 percent of the Mwanza factory's electricity now comes from the husks, which it buys from local farmers. Furnace oil accounts for just 10 percent of the energy the company uses, with the balance coming from the national grid.

As a result, the brewery has halved carbon emissions at its Mwanza plant, to 4,451 tonnes in 2014 from 8,909 tonnes ...More info on site
