More about the bitterness in dry hopped beers
ABSTRACT
The team of Prof. Shellhammer found out that
the bitterness in dry hopped beers is influenced
by the concentration of humulinones. They also
determined the sensory bitterness of the
humulinones to be 0.65 that of iso-alpha acids.
Another US research team did further research
on humulinones and found that hops and hop
pellets (but not CO2 extracts) contain different
concentrations of of this compound. Their
formation post-kilning or post-pelleting is
time, temperature and variety dependent. As
the HSI of the hops correlates positively, an
oxidative damage during kilning or storage for
their formation is suggested. I am happy the
iso-alpha acids are no longer responsible for
bringing all the bitterness into the beer by their

Portugal: Per capita beer consumption the lowest in the last 12 years
|
Per capita beer consumption in Portugal has been declining steadily during the past years, Jornal I reported on October 9.
This year the volume of beer consumed per capita is estimated at 46 litres, which is the lowest in the last 12 years, according to the Association of Portuguese Beer Producers (APCV).
Before the crisis, the per capita beer consumption in the country stood at 57 litres.

Myanmar: Only a month in Myanmar, Heineken already needs expansion permit
|
Heineken has only been in Myanmar for a month, but demand is already so high it can’t produce enough, said Lester Tan, managing director of APB Alliance Brewery Company, a joint venture between Heineken and Myanmar’s Alliance Brewery.
“Demand is in excess of our calculations. We’re now expanding to make sure we can produce enough. It’s a good problem, but it is a problem,” Mr. Tan was quoted as saying by Myanmar Times on October 12
The company is here for the long haul, aiming to lead the international premium beer market, Mr Tan said.
“We’re starting with Yangon and Mandalay, but eventually will expand to the rest of the country,” he said.
Its current capacity is 225,000 hectolitres, or almost 20,000 hectolitres a month, he said.
“We need to apply to the Myanmar Investment Commission for a permit to expand. Next year we think we can distribute to the rest of the country – if Yangon doesn’t drink all the production.”
Mr Tan played down the prospect of competition with the incumbent Myanmar Beer, which he described as a “mainstream” product rather than a competitor in the premium market.

Myanmar: Kirin’s Myanmar Brewery Limited to launch at least two new products

Beer drinkers are poised to celebrate a bigger selection of quaffing options under a move by Myanmar Brewery Limited to launch at least two new products in a market thirsty for choice, Frontier Myanmar reported on October 14.
Japan’s Kirin Holdings, which acquired a majority stake in MBL in August, is developing a yet-to-be named “domestic premium” lager and will also brew its flagship international brand, Kirin Beer.
MBL, which brews top-selling Myanmar Beer, has an estimated share of the beer market of between 75 percent and 80 percent, but is facing competition with the arrival of Heineken and Carlsberg, the world’s third and fourth largest brewers respectively.
“We don’t want to lose our market share, so we have to develop an international premium in Kirin Beer and a domestic premium beer,” said Mr Tetsuhiko Sato, Kirin Myanmar’s general manager.
Mr Sato said the plan for the domestic premium lager was “exciting” but declined to elaborate.
MBL has begun marketing Black Shield stout to replace ABC Extra Stout, which the brewery ceased making after Heineken resumed operations in Myanmar.
Black Shield was launched on September 9 and is 8.1 percent proof, with the numbers adding up to nine, a lucky number in Myanmar, said Mr Sato.

Morocco: Morocco’s leading French-speaking newspaper criticizes decision to ban beer festival
|
Following the ban of Morocco’s first beer festival in Casablanca last week, Morocco’s leading French-speaking newspaper, L’Economiste, criticized the decision, saying it does not hide the impact of liquor sales on the Moroccan economy.
“Behind the passion around alcohol lies a true cash machine for the national budget,” reported l’Economiste in its weekend issue.
The paper pointed out that the Moroccan government made at least 1 billion MAD from the tax revenues for alcohol sales in 2014. More specifically, the government’s revenues from taxes on beer sales reached more than 708 million MAD.
Last year, Moroccans consumed over 85 million bottles of beer and at least 30 million litres of wine. Morocco produced 40 million bottles of wine a year, most of which is consumed within the country. Around 10 million tourists visit the country every year.
According to L’Economiste, the Moroccan government earned over 802.6 million MAD from alcohol taxes during the first nine months of 2015.
Last week, Casablanca’s first ever beer festival was axed just days before it was slated to begin. Moroccan authorities have cited legal “non-compliance” by the organizers for the decision.
