More about the bitterness in dry hopped beers
ABSTRACT
The team of Prof. Shellhammer found out that
the bitterness in dry hopped beers is influenced
by the concentration of humulinones. They also
determined the sensory bitterness of the
humulinones to be 0.65 that of iso-alpha acids.
Another US research team did further research
on humulinones and found that hops and hop
pellets (but not CO2 extracts) contain different
concentrations of of this compound. Their
formation post-kilning or post-pelleting is
time, temperature and variety dependent. As
the HSI of the hops correlates positively, an
oxidative damage during kilning or storage for
their formation is suggested. I am happy the
iso-alpha acids are no longer responsible for
bringing all the bitterness into the beer by their
own...

USA, TX: Unfair liquor laws limit craft brewers sales
|
In a drab building that used to house a tile shop, amidst the ticky-tack warehouse maze between Loops 410 and 1604, it's brewing day at Branchline Brewing Company, San Antonio Current reported.
Owner Jason Ard, head brewer Paul Ford and cellarman Derrick Rutledge – the brewery's only full-time employees – mix and meddle with a new batch of brew, peering into steaming vats and taking measurements for quality control.
As they work, people occasionally filter into the brewery's tasting room to buy a six-pack or to get a keg or a growler filled. But to the potential customers' astonishment, and the brewers' dismay, Ard turns them away. He's required to by law.
Texas' inconsistent and arcane liquor laws forbid many breweries from selling their goods for off-site consumption – although distilleries, wineries and even other beer makers can.
Under current Texas law, production breweries – those with manufacturer's and brewer's licenses that brew their own beer for distribution – are not allowed to sell directly to consumers for off-site consumption. But beer makers with a brewpub license can both sell beer for later consumption and brew up to 10,000 barrels of beer per year for distribution. That cap scares off some craft brewers from

USA, MI: Tri-City Brewing Co. buys land for building larger brewery
|
Kevin Peil, the owner of Tri-City Brewing Co., calls his business one of Bay City's best kept secrets, MLive.com reported on October 12.
That's mostly due in part to its obscure location, tucked away in the northern corner on the East Side of the city's limits. There's no signage from the road and if you're driving east on Woodside Avenue toward Essexville, the only chance of seeing any identifier of the business, located at 3020 N. Water St., would be through a rear view mirror.
"You wouldn't believe how many people come in here from Bay City for the first time and are amazed that we've been here for as long as we have," Peil said. "We don't have any big signs, we really don't do any advertising, and that's because, pretty much up until this point, we couldn't."
That's all potentially about to change.
Earlier this month, Peil closed on a 3.5-acre property on Shrestha Drive in Bangor Township near the Bay County Civic Arena. He bought the land for $115,000 from Henry Street Investments, a local real estate and property management company run by Mitzi Dimitroff, daughter of Bay City developer Paul Rowley.
Peil currently is in talks with architects and engineers to

USA, SC: Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse's to be launched in Columbia by May 2016
|
Come May 2016, the Curtiss-Wright Hangar at Owens Field in Columbia will be home to Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse's new beer garden, production brewery, bottling line, kegging line, and event venue, Free Times reported on October 13.
The hangar, built in 1929, has been abandoned for years, with people wanting to make use of the historic building but no idea ever sticking — until now.
“CW Partners, LLC, is purchasing the property from the county and doing most of the rehabilitation; I just get the opportunity to be the tenant,” says Kevin Varner, owner of Hunter-Gatherer, a brewpub that's occupied a building at Main and College for the past 20 years. “Scott Linaberry has been pushing to have this building saved for the past five or six years.”
Other members of CW Partners include Robert Lewis and Chris Rogers, Will Brennan and Jim Brennan.
The price of overhauling the space has stopped others from pursuing it in the past, but owners of the building will qualify for state and federal tax credits for rehabilitation of a historic building, as well as a state tax credit for renovation of an abandoned building.
“That will help them make it a viable project, and

Canada, ON: Folly Brewpub opening in Toronto on October 14
|
Just over a month after it was first announced, the transition of Toronto’s Habits Gastropub into its new identity as Folly Brewpub is just about complete, with the re-opening under the new banner set to take place on October 14th, Canadian Beer News reported.
The change in name and focus reflects the increasing popularity of the on-site nanobrewery that was launched in early 2015. In addition to the new name, the College Street bar and restaurant will also have a new food menu developed by chef Luis Martins, with dishes designed to pair with the line-up of saisons, farmhouse ales, mixed fermentation beers and sours created by brewers Christina Coady and Chris Conway.
“Saisons and farmhouse ales are fantastic styles,” says Coady in a statement announcing the switch-over. “They pair well with our food menu and with cool yeast blends, particularly those we get from Escarpment Labs. Our beers have complexity while still being very refreshing.”
As noted in the previous announcement, Folly has also received a manufacturing licence that will allow for the distribution of its beers to other licensed establishments, as well as take-home sales from a bottle shop that is planned to open next spring.

USA, MA: Brick and Feather Brewery in Turner Falls opens to the public
|
A new Franklin County brewery, located right next to the bike path and canal in Turners Falls, has opened its doors to the public, MassiveLive.com reported on October 11.
Brick and Feather Brewery hosted its grand opening over the weekend in a low-slung, light-filled building at 78 11th St. — the site of a former a drop forge.
Brick and Feather operates at a small scale, using a "seven-barrel brewing system," said head brewer Lawrence George. "We're still working out our prototypes."
George, a Vermont native and Florence resident, has been involved in the craft brewing business for about eight years, having worked in Boston, California, and at the Berkshire Brewing Co. in South Deerfield. He said his favorite beers are Farmhouse Belgians ("dry, subtle, and good with food") and American-style pale ales and Indian pale ales (lush, fruity flavors with a soft mouth feel.")
Brick and Feather beverages can currently be ordered at Five Eyed Fox in Turners Falls, and will soon be available at The Foundry in downtown Northampton, George said, adding that he hopes to work with a variety of Pioneer Valley restaurants.
"We really want to be a local brewery," he said.
Brick and Feather has a farmer-brewery license from the state

USA, LA: Ground-breaking ceremony held for new brewery in Lake Charles

An official ground-breaking ceremony has been held for Crying Eagle Brewing Company, which is building in Lake Charles on more than 10 acres of land, WBRZ reported on October 11.
The company will produce hand-crafted beers and is expected to open its doors next spring.
Crying Eagle President Eric Avery said on October 9 they've spent the past two years planning the project and can't wait to make their "unique vision a reality that everyone can share."
Crying Eagle's 15,000 square-foot production facility will include a two-story tap room, tasting room, bar, indoor and outdoor stages, private event facilities, and an outdoor beer garden.
Crying Eagle also will offer tours, beer dinners featuring local chefs, live music performances, and a "brewers' playground" for experimentation and customer feedback on new brew flavors.

USA, FL: Boynton Beach-based Due South Brewing expanding distribution to Jacksonivlle
|
Boynton Beach-based Due South Brewing is expanding its reach into Northeast Florida ahead of Jacksonville Beer Week, Jacksonville Business Journal reported on October 13.
The move was a strategic one for Due South, which has been making its way up the east coast for the last few years. Due South President and Head Brewer Mike Halker said that the company was holding off on extending distribution to Jacksonville until it was sure it could meet demand.
"We've covered the east coast from Key West to St. Augustine, and Jacksonville is the next logical step for us," Halker said.
Halker said that the growth of the craft beer industry was a motivating factor for Due South to jump into the market.
"Jacksonville is one of the biggest markets in the state when it comes to craft beer," Halker said. "Tampa is possibly the only bigger one."
Florida is also a national leader in craft beer, as the third largest market in the U.S.
"It's not showing any signs of slowing down," Halker said. "There's a lot of potential there."
The brewery, which has been open since 2012, also recently expanded its distribution out of state, to Philadelphia.
Halker said that expansion efforts will begin to slow down now that

USA, KY: Nanobrewery Subculture Brewing planned in Dayton by early 2016
|
The craft brewing scene is starting to heat up in Northern Kentucky as a new nanobrewery comes to light, wcpo.com reported on October 12.
Owner Michael Schuler announced on October 6 that he plans to open Subculture Brewing in Dayton.
Schuler leased a property at 509 Sixth Street and hopes to open shop in early 2016.
In staying true to the brewery’s namesake, Schuler said he hopes Subculture will feature a diverse atmosphere and following.
“Subculture isn't just a name; it's a way of life. I know that sounds corny but I truly believe I wouldn't be who or where I am today without the subcultures I've been part of throughout my life,” Schuler said. “It's about doing your own thing and not just following the mainstream. What makes us different makes us great and I want to celebrate that. I want the brewery to engage different groups throughout the Tri-State and most importantly encourage people to be who they are, not what society tells them to be.”
Schuler is pricing out brewhouse systems but said he is primarily looking for a 3 bbl. (barrels) brewhouse system and hopes to produce about 150 bbls. in his first year. After that, he expects production to top

Myanmar: Only a month in Myanmar, Heineken already needs expansion permit
|
Heineken has only been in Myanmar for a month, but demand is already so high it can’t produce enough, said Lester Tan, managing director of APB Alliance Brewery Company, a joint venture between Heineken and Myanmar’s Alliance Brewery.
“Demand is in excess of our calculations. We’re now expanding to make sure we can produce enough. It’s a good problem, but it is a problem,” Mr. Tan was quoted as saying by Myanmar Times on October 12
The company is here for the long haul, aiming to lead the international premium beer market, Mr Tan said.
“We’re starting with Yangon and Mandalay, but eventually will expand to the rest of the country,” he said.
Its current capacity is 225,000 hectolitres, or almost 20,000 hectolitres a month, he said.
“We need to apply to the Myanmar Investment Commission for a permit to expand. Next year we think we can distribute to the rest of the country – if Yangon doesn’t drink all the production.”
Mr Tan played down the prospect of competition with the incumbent Myanmar Beer, which he described as a “mainstream” product rather than a competitor in the premium market.
“We want to capture a large proportion of the international premium segment. Myanmar Beer is in the

Myanmar: Kirin’s Myanmar Brewery Limited to launch at least two new products
|
Beer drinkers are poised to celebrate a bigger selection of quaffing options under a move by Myanmar Brewery Limited to launch at least two new products in a market thirsty for choice, Frontier Myanmar reported on October 14.
Japan’s Kirin Holdings, which acquired a majority stake in MBL in August, is developing a yet-to-be named “domestic premium” lager and will also brew its flagship international brand, Kirin Beer.
MBL, which brews top-selling Myanmar Beer, has an estimated share of the beer market of between 75 percent and 80 percent, but is facing competition with the arrival of Heineken and Carlsberg, the world’s third and fourth largest brewers respectively.
“We don’t want to lose our market share, so we have to develop an international premium in Kirin Beer and a domestic premium beer,” said Mr Tetsuhiko Sato, Kirin Myanmar’s general manager.
Mr Sato said the plan for the domestic premium lager was “exciting” but declined to elaborate.
MBL has begun marketing Black Shield stout to replace ABC Extra Stout, which the brewery ceased making after Heineken resumed operations in Myanmar.
Black Shield was launched on September 9 and is 8.1 percent proof, with the numbers adding up to nine, a lucky number in Myanmar, said Mr Sato.

Morocco: Morocco’s leading French-speaking newspaper criticizes decision to ban beer festival
|
Following the ban of Morocco’s first beer festival in Casablanca last week, Morocco’s leading French-speaking newspaper, L’Economiste, criticized the decision, saying it does not hide the impact of liquor sales on the Moroccan economy.
“Behind the passion around alcohol lies a true cash machine for the national budget,” reported l’Economiste in its weekend issue.
The paper pointed out that the Moroccan government made at least 1 billion MAD from the tax revenues for alcohol sales in 2014. More specifically, the government’s revenues from taxes on beer sales reached more than 708 million MAD.
Last year, Moroccans consumed over 85 million bottles of beer and at least 30 million litres of wine. Morocco produced 40 million bottles of wine a year, most of which is consumed within the country. Around 10 million tourists visit the country every year.
According to L’Economiste, the Moroccan government earned over 802.6 million MAD from alcohol taxes during the first nine months of 2015.
Last week, Casablanca’s first ever beer festival was axed just days before it was slated to begin. Moroccan authorities have cited legal “non-compliance” by the organizers for the decision.
“Following media announcements about a beer festival in Casablanca, the authorities have asked the organizers to stop their publicity
