More about the bitterness in dry hopped beers
ABSTRACT
The team of Prof. Shellhammer found out that
the bitterness in dry hopped beers is influenced
by the concentration of humulinones. They also
determined the sensory bitterness of the
humulinones to be 0.65 that of iso-alpha acids.
Another US research team did further research
on humulinones and found that hops and hop
pellets (but not CO2 extracts) contain different
concentrations of of this compound. Their
formation post-kilning or post-pelleting is
time, temperature and variety dependent. As
the HSI of the hops correlates positively, an
oxidative damage during kilning or storage for
their formation is suggested. I am happy the
iso-alpha acids are no longer responsible for
bringing all the bitterness into the beer by their

Brazil: Heineken closing its Manaus brewery
|
The mayor of Manaus, the capital of Brazil’s Amazonas state announced on his Facebook page on October 15 that Heineken intends to shut up its operations in the city, D24m.com reported.
The company does not see any more possibilities of investing into the site amid the current crisis, mayor Arthur Neto said. “I talked to Corporate Executive of Heineken Brazil Lucas Camara, but he said there wasn’t any perspective of keeping the brewery in Manaus running,” he said.
Heineken launched its Manaus site in July 2013. Its production was being shipped to the cities of Parintins (Amazonas), Boa Vista (Roraima), Santarem and Itaituba (Para), Porto Velho (Rondonia), and Rio Branco (Acre).

Heineken N.V. on October 15 announced that the transaction to acquire a 50 per cent shareholding in the Lagunitas Brewing Company had completed.
The closing of the transaction follows fulfilment of all conditions precedent as agreed on 8 September, when the intention to enter into a partnership with Lagunitas was announced, the Dutch brewing giant said.

South Africa: South Africa’s National Treasury says AB InBev-SABMiller merger should comply with conditions
|
The planned takeover of SABMiller by Anheuser-Busch InBev should comply with conditions imposed by South Africa on SABMiller when it relocated its head office to Britain in 1999, South Africa's National Treasury said on October 15.
SABMiller, which on October 13 agreed in principle to an offer worth more than $100 billion from its larger rival, traces its roots back to South Africa 120 years ago, when it began selling beer in the gold-prospecting fields around Johannesburg.
Before relocating its head office to London in 1999, South African exchange control authorities required SABMiller, like other companies such Old Mutual and Anglo American which made similar transitions, to prove its assets would not be affected by the move.
Other conditions include that all the South African operations and assets of the company will remain in South Africa, and that the company would match dividends paid to the foreign holding company with dividends paid to South African shareholders, in order to maintain balance-of-payments neutrality.
A senior treasury official said on October 13 the department was watching the merger for signs of any tax erosion.

Angola: Beer imports drop almost 65% in Q2 2015
|
Angola imported almost 65% less beer in the second quarter of this year as compared to the same period in 2015, Noticias ao Minuto reported on October 14.
Beer was one of the imported products most affected by the country’s economic troubles related to the falling crude oil prices.
In April-June 2014, the country imported 65,773 tonnes of beer, but during the respective period this year the volume declined to 23,280 tonnes.
The main volume of beer shipped to Angola comes from Portugal.

Russia: Sports Ministry may remove ban on selling beer at sporting events
|
Russia's sports minister said that it is time to consider removing the ban on selling beer at sporting events, a news report said.
Lifting the ban on beer sales in stadiums during sporting events would increase revenues for event organizers and please spectators, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said, Interfax news agency reported on October 13.
"As of today, the restrictions have to a certain degree fulfilled their role, and I think we can now quite happily … think about returning beer to the stadiums," Mutko was quoted as saying.
Currently, there is a ban on beer sales during sporting events in Russia, with the exception of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Mutko said, Interfax reported.
