Canada: Molson Coors preparing to modernize Canadian brewing capacity
|
Molson Coors is preparing to modernize its Canadian brewing capacity after finding a buyer for its Vancouver site and preparing to make a decision about its historic operations in Montreal, CBC News reported on November 5.
"Overall, I think we've got a very strong plan for reshaping the supply chain in Canada," Stewart Glendinning, CEO of Molson Coors Canada, said during a conference call on November 5.
Molson Coors announced last December that it would shut down its beer bottling operations at the 55-year-old Vancouver brewery located at the south end of the Burrard Street Bridge. It now has a buyer for the site, a prime piece of expensive Vancouver real estate.
It plans to use the undisclosed proceeds to build a new plant over the next two to three years somewhere in the province for its brewing and distribution operations. Until then, it will lease the current site from the new owner.
Glendinning said the selling price of the land was high enough it would cover the cost of a new brewery, estimated to be completed in three to five years.
A feasibility study expected to be completed in the new year will determine whether it upgrades the current location in Old Montreal

USA: Craft Brew Alliance’s net sales grow by 5% in Q3 to September 30
|
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading craft brewing company in the USA, on November 4 reported its financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2015.
The company reported net sales of $54.7 million, an increase of $2.6 million or 5.0% over the third quarter of 2014, driven by a 2.2% increase in shipment volume and higher net sales per barrel.
Gross profit for the quarter increased 15.1% to $16.9 million, and gross margin expanded by 270 basis points to 30.8%, primarily as a result of increased pricing, better brewery balance, and lower distribution costs compared to the same period last year.
SG&A expense increased by $1.9 million, primarily due to increased employee-related costs and continued investments in sales infrastructure and marketing.
Across CBA’s portfolio, overall depletion volume was flat compared to the third quarter of 2014, which reflects strong growth in both of CBA’s national brand families, Kona Brewing Co. and Omission, offset by declines in Redhook and Widmer Brothers outside of their home markets, as well as the impact from increasing competition in California.
Kona, now a top 10 national craft beer brand and the lead brand in CBA’s portfolio, and Omission, the #1 selling beer for consumers seeking

USA, WI: Third Space Brewing hoping to open in Milwaukee in summer 2016
|
A Milwaukee-area brewmaster with West Coast experience plans to open a new craft brewery, tasting room and beer garden in the Menomonee Valley, Milwaukee Business Journal reported on November 4.
Kevin Wright is building out a new brewery called Third Space Brewing at 1505 W. St. Paul Ave. in Milwaukee, down the street from Sobleman's. Wright plans to lease the space, a former manufacturing facility, and employ four or five upon opening in summer 2016.
Wright, a Milwaukee native, spent six years as head brewer for Hangar 24 Craft Brewery in Redlands, Calif., a 40,000-barrel-per-year operation.
Wright said his brewery will blend West Coast brewing styles with Midwest tastes as he hopes to introduce new styles to Milwaukee beer aficionados.
"Our ownership team is excited to join the growing craft beer scene in Wisconsin and play our part in the resurgence of Milwaukee as a leading city for brewing in the U.S.,” Wright said. “The growth of craft beer and craft breweries here confirms our belief that Milwaukee beer drinkers are seeking new local craft options.”
Wright has enlisted several local companies to lead the project: architect Dan Beyer, developer Steve Looft and Quality Tank Solutions in Oconomowoc for the brewing equipment.
Wright, who graduated from

USA, GA: SweetWater Brewing looks to open second brewery in Western US states
|
SweetWater Brewing Co. announced on November 5 that it has taken the first tangible step toward opening a second brewery, and is exploring options for locations in Western U.S. states, and considering a third location in the Central U.S.
The South’s largest brewery purchased equipment from Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley, Cali, after it closed this summer, including a fully automated, 4 vessel, 130 barrel brewhouse, inclusive of 3 silos and over 31 fermentation and brite beer tanks (consisting of various sizes from 310 to 125 barrel tanks).
The acquired equipment will give SweetWater the ability to brew up to 420,000 barrels at the second brewery.
Headquartered in Atlanta, SweetWater is ranked the 18th largest brewery in the nation by the Brewer’s Association, and has built a solid brand presence in the 18 states (and D.C.) where it is distributed.
Our focus on making a quality liquid and building a strong brand has created an incredible inertia. And while we’re continuing to develop the East Coast, it’s time for us to simultaneously start looking to the West,” says SweetWater founder and Big Kahuna, Freddy Bensch. The company is exploring location options in all western states.

USA, WI: 3 Sheeps Brewery expanding capacity
|
3 Sheeps Brewery in Sheboygan will soon be adding to its flock, sheboyganpress.com reported on November 5.
The company said it plans to expand operations, leasing the old Coca-Cola Plant at 1837 North Ave. Refurbishing the 40,000-square-foot space will give the company the ability to produce 200 barrels of beer a day, up from the 28 barrels a day they produce now. The expansion would also result in the creation of 15 new jobs and targeted expansion of their distribution and product line-up.
The brewery, started in 2011 by co-founder and brewmaster Grant Pauly, has expanded by leaps and bounds since then, having expanded from offering a few select beers to nearby bars and restaurants to selling a range of products in stores throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. Pauly said they expected they'd need to expand soon but have seen a 45 percent growth year-over-year and were already reaching capacity at their current location.
Currently, Pauly said they produce about 4,000 barrels of beer each year. With the addition of a new brewhouse and equipment, the brewery expects to increase production to about 15,000 barrels a year at first. But while Pauly said he could see Rebel Kent the First infiltrating other Midwest

USA, TN: Smith & Lentz Brewing Company opens in Nashville
|
Nashville's fast-growing craft beer industry has a new player: Smith & Lentz Brewing Company on the east side, The Tennessean reported on November 5.
The 6,200-square-foot brewery opened last week at 903 Main St. The brewery is separated from the spacious taproom, which has bar seating, high-top tables and picnic-style seating, along with a ping-pong table.
Smith & Lentz is the brainchild of friends Kurt Smith and Adler Lentz, both from Wisconsin who met while living in Austin. Lentz was the head brewer at Hops & Grains and Smith worked as an environmental and risk consultant while homebrewing on the side.
“Once we found out we both watch the Green Bay Packers, we started watching that together and became friends,” Smith said.
Their friendship eventually evolved into a business partnership and they chose Music City as the destination for their neighborhood-focus brewery. The duo are handling all aspects of the business themselves, from brewing to bartending and cleaning.
“One of the biggest reasons we moved here would be just the sheer openness of the market,” Lentz said. “When we were writing a business plan there were maybe 11, 12 breweries. There just wasn’t much here as far as the size of the city goes.”

USA, GA: Second Self Beer Co. announces major expansion
|
In a clear illustration of the Atlanta beer scene’s rapid and systemic growth, Second Self Beer Co. announced a major expansion and plans for the future this week. The brewery, which opened to the public in the fall of 2014, revealed that its production will increase by approximately 150 percent in 2016 alongside the opening of a much larger taproom, three times the size of their current space, Atlanta Magazine reported on November 5.
The Westside-based brewery has in fact been operating at capacity ever since March. “The expansion will give us a lot more finished product that we’ll be able to put in cans,” says Santamaria. “We’ve decided to can our Mole Porter, and we’ll want another beer in cans for the summer months. The problem of being at 100 percent capacity is that you’re just always working, and more tank space will free us up for a bit more experimentation. You’ll probably see those experimental beers released primarily through the taproom.”
Inspiration for that new taproom is still being considered. To accommodate significantly larger crowds, the tasting room will be removed from the brewhouse where it’s currently found in a very modest fashion. That current taproom will shut down in

Canada, ON: Henderson Brewing launches crowdfunding campaign to buy new kegging line
|
A brewery aiming to open in Toronto in early 2016 has announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign to assist in its purchase of a “state-of-the-art” kegging line, Canadian Beer News reported on November 4.
As announced in September, Henderson Brewing is being founded by Steve Himel and Mark Benzaquen, two brewing industry veterans with years of experience at both craft and macrobreweries.
While most aspects of the project are fully funded, the pair is looking to the public to contribute C$55,000 towards the kegging machine. In exchange, those who pledge funds will receive a variety of perks, including subscriptions to monthly beer releases and invitations to release events at the brewery.

Australia: Coopers Brewery posts record full-year sales and revenue
|
Australia’s Coopers Brewery has posted record full-year sales and revenue, despite a "troubling fall in consumption," increased pressure on margins and higher malt prices, The Courier Mail reported on November 5.
The company's total beer sales increased 4.7 per cent to 78.8 million litres in fiscal 2015. In the same period revenue edged up to A$235.1 million, from A$231.3 mln a year earlier.
The group's full-year profit after tax also crept higher, lifting to A$28.9 mln, from A$28 mln a year earlier.
A 6.3 per cent rise in packaged beer sales offset a 2.7 per cent decline in keg beer volumes to 12.8 million litres over the year.
“This decline in our draught beer volume is to a level we last saw in 2009,” managing director Tim Cooper said.
“This mirrors the fall in Australian beer consumption since 2009, when the national volume was 18.7 million hectolitres."
Dr Cooper said Australians were now drinking less than 17 million hectolitres per annum, a level not seen since 1972.
“This troubling fall in consumption represents a loss of nearly 10 per cent of Australia’s beer volume in six years, despite a growing population.”
The decline in consumption has increased the pressure on margins as retailers scrape to
