About the richness of hard resins
ABSTRACT
So far hard resins are still considered to have no
brewing value. And until recently we could only
speculate what the exact components in hard resins
are. In this extensive research project this German
Research team has identified numerous components
of the epsilon-fraction of hops, which is a part of the
hard resins, by means of UV/vis, LC-TOF-MS, and
1D/2D-NMR studies as well as synthetic experiments
and sensory guided fractionation. Besides a series of
literature known xanthohumol derivatives, multifidol
glucosides, flavon-3-on glycosides, and p-coumaric
acid esters, a total of 11 bitter tastants are reported
for the first time with threshold values of 5 -
198 mol/l. These compounds were shown to add to
the total bitterness in beers. Furthermore using the
epsilon-fraction as the sole hop addition,
demonstrated the possibility to produce beverages
strongly enriched with prenylated hop flavonoids.

North America: Diageo overhauling North American marketing operations in order to reverse weak sales
|
Diageo PLC said it is overhauling its North American marketing operations and putting more emphasis on consumer research as it looks to reverse weak sales in its largest market, The Wall Street Journal reported on November 12.
The British-based liquor company has lost market share in the U.S. as it struggles with brands like Smirnoff and Captain Morgan. It recently installed Deirdre Mahlan, its former chief financial officer, as the head of its North American business and charged her with turning it around.
Following an investor conference in New York on November 11, Ms. Mahlan said Diageo was restructuring and investing in marketing because it came “to rely perhaps too heavily” on its U.S. distribution network and hadn’t “devoted enough resources to consumer insights.”
She said the company is building several new marketing functions, including an insights team that will be dedicated to analysing consumer trends. The division is designed to address shifting consumer interests in the U.S. where once-red-hot categories like flavored vodka have fizzled while bourbon has taken off.
“Just because you have distribution does not mean you’re going to grow brands for the sustainable future,” Ms. Mahlan said. She added, “We are structuring ourselves now in a much more deliberate

USA, OH: Platform Beer Co. hoping to be brewing at its Gipsy Brewing facility by end of November
|
Platform Beer Co. is getting more space when Gypsy Brewing opens, Cleveland.com reported.
Platform's plans for Gypsy are moving ahead, said Justin Carson, one of Platform's owners. The brewhouse was delivered Wednesday, Nov. 11, with fermenters coming within the next two weeks, he said.
"By the end of November we'd better be brewing," said Carson, who owns JC BeerTech.
The operation will be in the old Leisy Brewing Co. at 3506 Vega Avenue, near Fulton Road and Interstate 90. Gypsy and Platform are less than a mile apart. The 120,000-square-foot space will serve a dual purpose: Platform will use 90 percent, with New Albion Brewing there as well. New Albion is a revitalization of what is known as the first microbrewery, established by Jack McAuliffe in 1976 in northern California.
But the remaining space is for brewers who need more room but who cannot afford or don't want to commit to their own, permanent location. This way, they can lease space at Gypsy.
It's akin to brewers who cannot afford the money or space for a permanent canning system who then turn to Buckeye Canning Systems. The Northeast Ohio-based company hauls its mobile operation to various breweries to can beers.
And in a nod to Leisy's

USA, CA: Anvil Brewing beginning construction on new brewery site in Berkeley
|
Anvil Brewing, a small craft brewery started by home brewers Sean Wells and Tim Sellmeyer, is beginning construction on the brewery site in Berkeley in the coming days, Berkeleyside reported on November 9.
Wells said Anvil has plans for a two-phase build-out that will include not only a 762 square-foot tasting room, but an adjacent quick-service restaurant as well. Berkeley’s Zoning Adjustments Board approved Anvil’s use permit for both phases during its Oct. 22 meeting.
Wells says that there is not much improvement work necessary for the brewery and tasting room, so construction will move quickly. They will likely begin work on restaurant, which will be located at 916 Gilman St., later in 2016.
Anvil Brewing will be producing a mix of small-batch, handcrafted brews, including both Belgian and American styles. Sellmeyer has a couple of award-winning beers that will likely grace the tap, like a nectarine wheat and a chile-based beer. Wells says that Anvil will likely pour between three and five beers at opening. The tasting room will also offer incidental retail sales of packaged beer brewed on-site as well as limited release bottles.
When the restaurant opens, it will serve a short, simple menu of pub-style food “intended to pair well

USA, MA: Dorchester Brewing Company to open contract brewing facility by spring 2016
|
Dorchester Brewing Company has announces their plans to open a dedicated 25,000 square foot contract brewing facility at 1246 Massachusetts Ave in spring 2016. The brewery, which is currently under development, will fill an industry void by supporting regional craft brewers with beer production, packaging and marketing support in a state-of-the-art facility, which will also feature tours, a 2,000+ square foot tasting room and a collaborative workspace open to brewers and the local startup community.
The brewery will feature a full suite of services where craft beer brands, large and small, can produce, package (bottling, kegging, and canning), barrel age, market and store their beers and materials. Head Brewmaster, Todd Charbonneau, former Head Brewer of Harpoon Brewery for ten years, will oversee production on multiple brewing systems and ensure premium quality control measures, guaranteed brewing and packaging times and overall product consistency. The brewery will offer the public the opportunity to experience the process of craft beer brewing first hand through tours and tastings in their 20-line tap system. In addition to uniquely supporting the brewing community, the facility will also act as a collaborative workspace for local organizations, residents and small businesses.
“As the regional craft beer industry continues to expand,

USA, GA: Atlanta’s Second Self Beer Company expands production and facilities
|
Second Self Beer Company is expanding its production output and facilities, including a new tasting room. The Georgia craft brewery opened in Atlanta in fall 2014, and due to demand, its beer production has been at capacity since March 2015. Starting in early 2016, Second Self is adding new tanks and an adjacent space to the brewery in order to increase production, Brewbound.com reported.
Currently, Second Self offers two canned beers: Thai Wheat (a spicy American wheat beer) and Red Hop Rye (a hybrid red rye IPA). These flagship, year-round beers are available in 12-ounce cans at bars, restaurants, and retail shops throughout Georgia. With the expansion, Second Self will add new beers to its canned line in 2016.
“After celebrating our one-year anniversary this fall, we’re thrilled to announce plans for expansion,” said Second Self’s Cofounder Jason Santamaria. “There have been times when Second Self has been hard to find, and it’s exciting that now more people can enjoy it!”
Jason Santamaria (32-years-old) and Chris Doyle (30-years-old) started Second Self as a home brewing experiment nearly a decade ago, and their highly acclaimed beers were released to the public in fall 2014. The two met in college at Georgia Tech and bonded

USA: Laurelwood Brewing ends contract brewing with Craft Brew Alliance and shifts production to Full Sail Brewing
|
After more than two years, Oregon’s Laurelwood Brewing will end its contract brewing relationship with Craft Brew Alliance and shift production to Full Sail Brewing, the company announced on November 9.
In a press statement, Laurelwood founder Mike De Kalb said he expects Full Sail, which is based in Hood River, Ore., to take over production in spring 2016.
“We are excited about this opportunity to move our brewing closer to our Oregon home and to work with industry recognized leaders in craft brewing,” he said.
Full Sail Brewing has dabbled in contract brewing in the past — it used to produce the Henry Weinhard’s brand for MillerCoors between 2003 — 2013.
Since 2013, Laurelwood had been making a majority of its packaged beer at CBA brewery in Woodinville, Washington. Year-to-date, the company had produced 13,500 barrels of its flagship offerings, including Workhorse IPA, Free Range Red and Vinter Varmer Brown Ale.
Scott Mennen, CBA’s vice president of operations, described the decision as a “mutual parting of ways.”
“It’s not where we want to be spending our energy,” he said. “We want to be spending our energy around our partners, developing our partner brands and developing our own beers.”
For CBA, the decision to end its contract

Canada, ON & USA, OH: Ontario’s Cameron’s Brewing starts distributing in Ohio
|
Add yet another Ontario craft brewery to the distribution ranks in Northeast Ohio, cleveland.com reported.
Cameron's Brewing Co., a 20-year-old brewery from Oakville, Ontario, joins fellow Canadian breweries Flying Monkey, Lake of Bays and Mill Street in the retail market.
Brewer Curtis Jeffrey's goal in seeing his beers head south is for American consumers to know Canadian craft brews offer more than just Molson and Labatt, he said, and that it's no big deal to try a beer from his northern neck of the woods.
"Why not try a beer from Canada?" asked Jeffrey, in town for meet-and-greets, the Fabulous Food Show and to introduce Cameron's in the Northeast Ohio market. "It's like trying a beer from Texas."
With about 15 employees, Cameron's produces the equivalent of about 5,000 barrels a year - small by American standards, midsized by an Ontario barometer.
Ontario has more than 200 breweries, most of which are close to Toronto, he said. But Canadian distribution is structured differently than the American system, so many are not widely known. That said, the market is "constantly growing," Jeffrey said.
"It's booming and booming and booming," said Jeffrey, who added Cameron's is adding a canning line to complement its bottling system.
Jeffrey, 27, has been

USA, MI: New Holland Brewing breaks ground on new location in Grand Rapids
|
New Holland Brewing Co. is ready to put its name on a new development in Grand Rapids, WoodTV reported on November 11.
Crews officially broke ground on the new location on November 11. The development is at the corner of Bridge Street NW and Broadway Avenue on the city’s West Side.
Half of the two-building complex will contain retail space, office space, and 36 apartments. The other half will house New Holland’s new brewpub, micro-distillery and restaurant.
The brewery was initially expected to open in late 2015 or early 2016, but the project has suffered some setbacks. New Holland’s president said he’s excited that construction is finally underway.
“It’s been a project that I’ve been working on for almost 10 years, so to get to this point is truly… I’m so excited about it can’t even really put It into words,” Brett VanderKamp, the president and CEO at New Holland Brewing, said.
New Holland has teamed up with Rockford Construction for the project –- one that could help revitalize the city’s West Side. They hope to open the restaurant in September 2016.
“I think it’s going to be very unique. The idea of this beer, brewery and distillery is unique in and of

The city granted the brewery a tax abatement to assist the owners in making the $1 million dollar investment.

USA, CA: California’s Central Coast enjoying craft beer revolution
|
There's something brewing on the Central Coast. It's a craft beer revolution, Keyt reported.
"We're making beer as fast as we can and selling out of it as quickly as we can get it into the kegs and into your bottles," said Deshia Heibner, owner of ManRock Brewing Company.
With nearly two dozen breweries in the area, and more on the way, it's safe to say, local beer is booming!
"The fervor behind craft beer consumption has taken a lot of people by surprise," said Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company founder/CEO Jaime Dietenhofer. "All the breweries are trying to adjust to it and trying to harness that demand."
Figueroa Mountain is bottling up and meeting that demand. Since its creation in 2010, the Buellton-based company has become of one California's most successful breweries, growing nearly 900 percent over the past three years.
"Looking back at the old business plans, I had envisioned growth, I didn't think we'd be here this fast, but I don't think we thought the industry would be here this fast," said Dietenhofer.
In an industry long ruled by macrobrews, such as Budweiser, Coors and Miller, now it's all about microbrews.
"I think the younger demographic of beer drinkers now have developed a palette for

India: Combined entity of SABMiller and AB InBev could put up strong fight against competitors in India
|
Belgian-Brazilian brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev on November 11 announced the final terms of its $ 107-billion takeover of SABMiller, its British-South African rival. The coming together of the two brewing majors will make what analysts say a "truly global beer company".
More importantly, AB InBev, the world's largest brewer, gets access to emerging markets through the deal. SABMiller, the world's second-largest beer company, gets 35% of its revenues from Latin America and 34% from Africa, respectively.
As per a report by Business Standard, in India, SABMiller, with brands such as Haywards 5000 and Knockout, is ranked number two in the pecking order of beer companies, after Heineken-backed United Breweries. Its estimated market share, according to industry sources, is around 25-27%. UB, on the other hand, has a market share of around 51-52%, while Carlsberg, the third-ranked brewer in India, has a share of around 15%.
According to analysts, the combined entity of SABMiller and AB InBev could put up a strong fight against competitors such as UB and Carlsberg. The latter, a Danish major, which entered India in 2007, has grown quickly on the back of a portfolio of strong beer brands such as Palone 8, Tuborg Strong and Carlsberg Elephant.

Finland: Number of breweries doubles since 2008
|
A craft beer revolution is a-brewin' in Finland – at least based on the rate at which microbreweries are popping up, the Helsinki Times reported on November 12.
The number of breweries in the country has doubled in no more than six years – from 25 in 2008 to 49 in 2014. The vast majority of the breweries, a total of 46, are microbreweries, indicate statistics released by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira).
A similar trend is observable in the European Union. The Brewers of Europe reveals in its annual report that the number of breweries in the European Union grew two-fold between 2009 and 2014. Yet, breweries in Finland provide employment to 500 fewer people than in 2009, according to the report.
The jobs have disappeared largely from major breweries, says Elina Ussa, the managing director at the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry. “The increase in the number of microbreweries hasn't been enough to compensate for the lost jobs because microbreweries typically only employ one to two people,” she explains.
Another curious trend is the apparent decline in beer consumption.
“The consumption of alcoholic beverages is generally declining across Europe. Domestic beer sales have declined every year

India: Vijay Mallya about to step down as chairman of United Spirits - reports
|
Vijay Mallya is about to step down as chairman of Diageo-controlled United Spirits before what could be an explosive annual meeting on November 24, reports from India claim.
The reports say that he is in the final stages of negotiation to sell to Diageo his remaining 5% stake in the company for a premium to the current market price, which itself rose by almost 5% in Bombay on the rumours. As part of the transaction, the reports say, Mallya would also step down as chairman and sever his final links with USL before the annual meeting.
Mallya’s aides have denied the reports and the Bombay Stock Exchange has asked for clarification.
The flamboyant Mallya inherited control of USL from his late father. It became the biggest player in the market, controlling more than 40% of all spirits sales in India on the back of its close association with United Breweries, where Mallya remains the main shareholder.
Diageo bought a controlling stake in USL between 2013 and 2014 for some £1.4 bln in a deal that transformed its presence in India, one of the fastest growing world markets for spirits. The two sides had been in on-off negotiations for several years, with Diageo unwilling to

World: Battle for Budweiser name not over yet
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev may have finalised its $107 bln marriage proposal to SABMiller, but the giant brewer has never stopped thinking about the one that got away, Business Day Live reported on November 12.
In Ceske Budejovice, a town of 93,000 nestled among the rolling hills of the southern Czech Republic, there’s a state-owned brewery called Budejovicky Budvar. Given that the town is called Budweis in the native German of most of its residents in the 19th century, the company’s beer is often known as Budweiser.
That name has obvious appeal to the makers of the top-selling American beer, now controlled by InBev. For more than a century, the two sides have engaged in a legal tussle over the rights to the name, and at various times over the past couple of decades the Americans have sought to buy the Czech brewer. Currently, Budvar says there are active court battles in about a dozen countries, with simmering disputes in another 25 or so.
"The lawsuits are exhausting in terms of both time and money," says Jiri Bocek, the Czech brewer’s CEO since 1991, who keeps a half-dozen bottles of American Budweiser on display in his office as a reminder of the dispute.
"We would be
