ABSTRACT
The genetic basis of hop organoleptic chemistry is
relatively poorly understood. This Autralian Research
team is looking into a mapping cross containing 166
genotypes in two different fields. Data about
survival, plant structur, flowering, sexual phenotype,
yield and hop acid chemistry on male and female
plants are being collected to analyse genetic
variation and genotypes by site interactions. The
ulitamte aim for this study is to obtain an extended
chemical phenotype, including headspace solid
phase micro extraction (SPME) of hop flavor volatiles,
polyphenols, glycosides, laboratory scale beer
volatile SPME profiles to be intergrated with
organoleptic data. So that one day QTLs (Quantitative
Trait Loci) in hop associated with organoleptic traits
can be identified.

UK: British craft brewing industry may be living a golden age
|
The traditional world view of the British pint is of something warm, flat and rather unpleasant. But the recent signing of a multi-million-pound deal to supply barley to China underlines the extraordinarily far-reaching esteem in which the British brewing industry is now held, The Conversation reported on November 17.
There are now almost 1,300 breweries in Britain, according to the Good Beer Guide 2015. Such a figure would have been unimaginable in 1970, when the bent for bland, big-name products was so dominant that Essex-based brewer Ind Coope saw fit to advertise its Long Life brand with the slogan “It never varies!”.
The Campaign for Real Ale (or CAMRA), founded in 1971, has changed everything. As Peter Swann explained five years ago in his paper The Fall and Rise of the Local Brew, it showed how discerning tastes and an appetite for diversity can lead to economic success.
This lesson did not go unnoticed elsewhere in the world. America took CAMRA as its inspiration and introduced the notion of “craft brewing”, as practised by comparatively small and local brewers determined to offer a distinct alternative to the mass-produced wares of the mega-players.

Japan: Young Japanese consumers embracing foreign beer brands

Sales of foreign beers in Japan are increasing due to their growing popularity and fashionable image among young people who had previously shied away from the beverages, The Japan News reported on November 19.
Attention is focused on whether foreign beer brands could halt a decline in the popularity of beer.
Many young men and women these days stop off at a restaurant offering a wide selection of beers on the east side of JR Shinjuku Station in Tokyo to enjoy conversation and a glass of the Dutch beer Heineken. The restaurant is adding foreign beers to its menu, including Guinness from Ireland, and also Belgian brands.
Significant commercial efforts to introduce foreign beer brands to the domestic market began in the 1980s, but their sales have been increasing in recent years.
Heineken’s domestic sales in 2014 increased by 11 percent compared to the previous year. In particular, sales of bottled beer were up 37 percent.
Budweiser, an American beer, also enjoyed a sales increase of 10 percent from a year earlier, while the Danish beer Carlsberg was up 19 percent year-on-year. South Korea: Ministry of Strategy and Finance in dispute over imported beer prices

Can the government take issue with a merchant for selling imported beer too cheap?
South Korea’s Ministry of Strategy and Finance said it won't, denying some media reports that it might ban imported beers from being sold too cheap. However, controversy is continuing in the beer market where imported brands are increasing their stake every year, The Korea Times reported on November 20.
It started at a meeting presided over by vice finance minister Joo Hyung-hwan in October, when local beer brewers reportedly complained that imported beers are offered at huge discounts.
When consumers go to shops, they often find promotions that sell diverse imported beers at discounted prices ― for example, a bundle of four cans sold for 10,000 won.
Local beer companies say these promotions are "misleading" consumers and distorting the market.
"Domestic beers have their brewery prices. The law bans selling beer at prices lower than the brewery prices," said a spokeswoman for a leading domestic beer company.
"In the case of imported beers, however, they don't have brewery prices. Importers just put a high price on the tag in the beginning, and then pretend as if they are giving a huge discount," she said. As imported beers aren't subject to price regulations

Vietnam & Canada & USA: Saigon Asset Management Corporation acquires Canadian and US distributor of popular Saigon beer

Ho Chi Minh City-based Saigon Asset Management Corporation has struck a deal to acquire Heritage Beverage, the sole distributor of the popular Saigon beer in Canada and the US, Vietnam media reported on November 18.
The acquisition will allow the privately-owned investment manager to boost exports of Vietnamese beer products into the countries, Louis Nguyen, CEO of the company, was quoted as saying by news website VnExpress.
The deal's value was not revealed.
Founded in 2007, Saigon Asset Management Corporation now manages two funds - Vietnam Equity Holding and Vietnam Property Holding, the website reported.
The funds have invested more than US$250 million in more than 45 companies and projects across Vietnam, mainly in the sectors of food and beverage, education, technology and health care. Their portfolios also include private companies in the US.
Headquartered in California's Beverly Hills, Heritage Beverage was established in 1994 to import and distribute the products of Sabeco, now Vietnam's largest brewer, according to VnExpress. Best sellers of Sabeco include 333, the red Saigon Export and the green Saigon Special.

USA: Heineken USA ending tequila-flavored beer experiment
|
Heineken USA is ending its tequila-flavored beer experiment. Desperados, a lager aged in tequila barrels that launched in the U.S. in 2014, will be discontinued, the marketer confirmed on November 18.
"We're shifting our focus to continue amplifying our four priority brands of Heineken/Heineken Light, Dos Equis, Strongbow & Tecate," a Heineken USA spokesman said in an email.
"Desperados is a great brand that's growing globally, but domestically, we want to remain laser focused on those four."
Desperados, which is sold in 85 international markets, had been handled globally by Wieden & Kennedy. But that relationship ended this past summer at the same time W&K's contract for the brand Heineken account was terminated. On November 18 Heineken announced that it appointed Amsterdam-based agency We Are Pi to be its lead global communications partner for Desperados, which is especially popular in France.
