USA: US Senate to hold hearing into AB InBev-SABMiller deal on December 8
|
The US Senate late on November 30 said it will hold a hearing next week into the proposed takeover of SABMiller PLC by rival Anheuser-Busch InBev, Alliance News reported.
The Senate Judiciary Committee said its antitrust subcommittee will hold a meeting on the proposed merger of the two largest beer companies in the world on December 8.
AB InBev is acquiring London-listed SABMiller for GBP71.0 billion, creating a combined company which will be responsible for around a third of beers sold globally.
The deal is set to face a significant number of regulatory hurdles, and the pair already have agreed a deal to sell SABMiller's stake in the MillerCoors joint venture in the US to Molson Coors, SABMiller's partner in the joint venture, for USD12.0 billion.
On November 30, the Financial Times also reported AB InBev was considering offloading the Peroni and Grolsch lager brands in order to ease any regulatory concerns about the deal in Europe.

Vietnam: Distributor of Heineken and other import beers beats Sabeco and Habeco in terms of pretax profit
|
Sabeco and Habeco, the two largest Vietnamese breweries, made VND5.3 trillion in pretax profit in 2014. However, the figure was still far below that earned by VBL, the distributor of Heineken, Tiger and Biere-Larue, VietNamNet Bridge reported on November 29.
The Vietnamese beer market is fertile land for beer manufacturers. According to the Vietnam Beverage Association (VBA), Vietnam consumed 3.1 billion litres of beer in 2014, worth $4.56 billion.
The domestic beer market is dominated by three names – Sabeco, a 100 percent Vietnamese owned enterprise which owns Sai Gon Beer and 333 brands; Habeco which owns Ha Noi Beer; and VBL which distributes foreign branded products.
Sabeco has been leading the domestic market for many years. With revenue of VND30 trillion in 2014, it could not be outstripped by any other manufacturer. The company made a high jump in the last four years with the double growth rate.
Euromonitor, in its report released in 2014, put Sabeco on the first position in the list of the breweries with the market share of 46 percent.
An analyst noted that Sabeco enjoys many great advantages. First, it sells products with prices affordable to the majority of Vietnamese and the taste suitable to the majority of consumers

The Netherlands: Heineken successfully places EUR460 mln of 9-year notes
|
Heineken N.V. on December 1 announced that it has successfully placed 9-year Notes with a coupon of 1.5% for a principal amount of €460 million. This amount was increased from the initial announcement of €400 mln due to the strong investor demand and brings the total volume of Heineken debt maturing in 2024 close to €1 bln.
The Notes will be issued under the Company's Euro Medium Term Note Programme and will be listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.
The proceeds from the Note issuance will be used for general corporate purposes.
BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, HSBC and JP Morgan acted as book runners and Banca IMI, Crédit Agricole, MUFG, Rabobank and Santander as co-managers.

Greece: Competition watchdog fines Heineken’s subsidiary for unfair market practices
|
Greece’s state competition watchdog on December 1 imposed a 31.5-million-euro ($33.5-million) fine on the country's main beer distributor Athenian Brewery, a Heineken subsidiary, over unfair market practices, ekathimerini.com reported.
The watchdog said Athenian Brewery had a “long-running” and “targeted” policy to squeeze out competitors by imposing exclusivity clauses on retailers in return for credit facilitation or price incentives.
The company immediately branded the ruling “unfair” and pledged to contest it in court.
“Athenian Brewery categorically denies the commission's claims, it considers the decision unfair and baseless and states that it will immediately seek recourse to justice,” it said in a statement.
Athenian Brewery added that though the competition commission's investigation lasted 15 years, it failed to take into account that the Greek beer market had expanded from five players in 2000 to over 25 in 2014.
“(Our company's) market share fell from 73 percent in 2000 to around 50 percent today. These facts prove in the clearest manner that the Greek beer market is free and open to competition,” it said.
One of Athenian Brewery's main competitors, Macedonian Thrace Brewery in northern Greece, last month noted the Greek market was still dominated by Amsterdam-based Heineken and Danish brewer Carlsberg “to the detriment of locally owned breweries,

India: United Breweries fined for not making disclosures regarding creation and invocation of pledge transactions in shares
|
Capital markets regulator Sebi on November 27 slapped a fine of Rs 15 lakh on United Breweries (Holding) Ltd for not making disclosures regarding creation and invocation of certain pledge transactions in shares of United Spirits, Daily News & Analysis reported.
The regulator said United Breweries Holding, as promoter of United Spirits, did not make disclosures in total four transactions related to 'invocation of pledge' that took place on February 15, 2012 and March 24, 26 of 2012.
It also failed to make disclosures regarding the 'creation of pledges' that took place on March 26, 2012.
Accordingly, Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has imposed "a penalty of Rs 15 lakh... on United Breweries (Holding) Ltd."
However, the regulator has let off Kingfisher Finvest India without levying any penalty as the company had made the disclosure pertaining to release of 10,000 pledge shares with a delay of just one day.
Further, efforts were made by the company to dispatch the required disclosures to all the three stock exchanges before the due date. Even though it reached to NSE and BSE with mere one day delay, but it reached to Bangalore stock exchange on the due date itself.

Timor-Leste: Heineken to become first world-renowned manufacturer to set up production base in East Timor
|
Dutch beer giant Heineken is set to become the first world-renowned manufacturer to set up a production base in East Timor, a small Southeast Asian nation formally known as Timor-Leste, Nikkei-Asian Review reported on December 1.
Heineken's move comes at a time when East Timor, the first country to gain independence in the 21st century, is becoming increasingly thirsty for foreign investment to achieve self-sustaining economic growth.
Heineken will start producing the first local brand beer and other beverages in the country at the end of 2016.
Demand for beverages is expected to grow in East Timor as the country has a very young population as well as a subtropical climate. Roughly half the country's population is 15 years old or younger.
The government has taken various drastic measures to improve its investment climate. The country now has the potential to become a hub for exports to its populous northern neighbor, Indonesia, and also to its wealthy southern neighbor, Australia.
Heineken will this month begin piling work for building a beverage plant in the Hera district near the capital, Dili. The $40 million plant will produce beer and soft drinks. Prefabricated structures are being built and assembled in China and are scheduled to arrive on

Africa: SABMiller launches Carling Blue Label beer across eight countries in Africa
|
Behemoth SABMiller this week launched its premium Carling Blue Label beer across eight countries simultaneously, AllAfrica reported on November 27.
Speaking to members of the press during a low-key event at its premises in Namibia on November 26, its National Trade Marketing Manager, Linda Buckingham said, "This will be an inaugural One Africa launch and Carling Blue Label Beer will be launched in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique." Carling Blue Label, she explained, would be a classic premium lager beer and thus fell in the local premium category. The beer she said would have a six month shelf life and was not a promotional product but a permanent pack.
According to her, Carling Blue is made from a specially chosen single variety of barley malt. Describing its taste, Buckingham said, "This single malt Carling Blue Label beer captures a rich malty and depth of flavour overall character.
“The recipe, as designed by our master brewers still underpins the drinkability and all round flavour balance to ensure a special beer drinking experience, full of flavour."
In comparison to Carling Black, Carling Blue's alcohol by volume comes in at 5%.

World: Global hop shortage may lead to further varietal exploration of beer’s other key ingredient - malt
|
The global hop shortage will necessarily drive further varietal exploration of beer’s other key ingredients, an American brewer has predicted.
Craft Brew Alliance — owner of Portland’s Widmer Bros, Seattle’s Redhook and Hawaii’s Kona — has been impacted by the hop shortage in spite of its long-term contracts with suppliers, head of innovation brewing, Ben Dobler, told Australian Brews News.
“We’ve had contracts for years on Simcoe and that hop’s becoming wildly difficult for us to get, so some recipes are going to have to change,” he said.
Dobler said maltsters can keep up with demand more readily than hop producers, which cannot increase their acreage exponentially as craft beer production continues to ramp up.
“We’re going to start to see the vendors on the malt side start to produce boutique malts,” he tipped.
He said the result would be conversations about the interplay of different malt varietals and the esters they produce when used with a particular yeast.
“I really do think that that’s the evolution,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dobler said American brewers now have the ability to produce more traditional, understated beer styles than have been trending in the US in recent years.
“Brewers are getting more talented, they don’t need to hide behind a tonne

UK: Spring malting barley growers advised to continue to manage risk and lock into contracts
|
United Kingdom’s spring malting barley growers should continue to manage risk and maximise opportunities – for example by locking into contracts and growing varieties suited to more than one end market – even though a brighter future is predicted for the crop, Farmer UK reported on December 1.
That is the message from industry experts Stuart Shand of international merchant Gleadell Agriculture, and Samantha Brooke of Syngenta, as growers plan spring cropping for 2016.
It also comes as a new spring malting barley variety, Laureate, is being developed – targeted not only at UK distilling but also at brewing markets both in the UK and overseas.
According to Stuart Shand, while the market for spring malting barley has been challenging in 2015 – with a large harvest and reduced beer demand from some countries – the crop’s long-term picture looks bright.
“Global barley demand is increasing by approximately 3% year on year,” explains Mr Shand, “and UK brewing is forecast to turn around with 1% year on year growth. Also, distilling markets are optimistic with 2% year on year growth.”
Nevertheless, for 2016, Mr Shand believes beer and distilling markets may continue under pressure, with large malt and barley stocks going into harvest and limited
