Brewery news USA: Number of breweries reaches record level this year
The total number of U.S. breweries reached a record level in 2015, according to a year-end review from the Brewers Association—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers. As of the end of November, there are now 4,144 breweries in the country, topping the historic high of 4,131 breweries in 1873, the Brewers Association reported on December 2. “This is a remarkable achievement, and it’s just the beginning,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “Beer has always been a hallmark of this country and it is even more apparent today as America’s beer culture continues to expand.” Of note in 2015: •Brewery openings now exceed two a day. •Fifteen states are now home to more than 100 breweries: California, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Texas, Ohio, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Indiana. •IPA remained the top style sold by independent craft brewers, and continues to grow faster than the overall craft category. •Data shows that “locally made” is important to over half of craft beer buyers. •Similarly, knowing that the beer is made by a small and independent brewery is important to a majority of craft drinkers in their purchase decision. “Craft breweries are ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Small brewers worried by AB InBev-SABMiller merger possible effect on their sales opportunities
The proposed consolidation of the world's biggest beer companies in recent weeks has given rise to concerns that it could be harder for Canada's small brewers to sell their brands locally, CTV News reported on December 3.

"Traditionally, big companies merging to become even bigger companies tends to have a little bit of a chilling effect on innovation and small companies," said Jason Fisher, owner of the Indie Ale House, a Toronto brewhouse that's been in operation for three years.

"You want to go to a sporting event; they own that venue. You want to go to a concert; they own that venue. You want to buy beer at a store; they own those too."

Large brewers use their financial firepower for marketing and sponsorships to increase awareness of their brands. In exchange, those companies can buy up more beer tap lines to dominate distribution in bars and restaurants.

"That makes it a lot tougher for a smaller brewery to go into a bar and say: 'I have a brand that's better than yours,"' said Stephen Beaumont, a veteran beer industry watcher and author.

SABMiller recently agreed to a US$107-billion takeover by Anheuser-Busch InBev in a merger of the world's two largest brewers. The deal ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Wolfe Street Brewing to officially launch in Harrisonburg on December 5
Located downtown near the corner of Wolfe and Liberty streets, Wolfe Street Brewing Co. is the newest addition to Harrisonburg’s growing collection of local breweries. It joins three others: Brothers Craft Brewing, Three Notch’d Brewing Company and Pale Fire Brewing Co, The Breeze reported on December 2.

Wolfe Street is owned by 2005 JMU graduate Josh Canada, who also owns Back Bay Brewing in Virginia Beach.

Canada considered opening another brewery after Leo Cook, one of his business partners, called to tell him he had found a unique location for one.

“I really liked Harrisonburg, I liked JMU, I liked the location,”

Canada said. “We went up there and checked it out and thought it would be perfect.”

To see the brewery now, it’s hard to imagine the challenges Canada and his business partners initially encountered. Government approval for a liquor license took 90 days longer than expected and they had to work the kinks out of the brewing equipment.

However, once the issues were resolved, Wolfe Street had its soft opening on Oct. 24 and began operating on a condensed schedule. The brewery is currently open Thursday through Sunday, but will begin opening on Tuesdays after the grand ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Beer drinkers file a suit to block AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
US beer drinkers sued to block Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s $110 billion SABMiller Plc takeover, saying the deal would force them to pay more for lower quality, Bloomberg reported on December 4.

The acquisition by the world’s largest brewer of the second biggest would create a monopoly in the beer market in violation of U.S. antitrust law, the beer drinkers contend.

Brewers of mass-market beer are trying to cut production and distribution costs as they lose sales to smaller independent brands in Europe and North America. Carlsberg A/S, the world’s fourth-largest brewer, announced this month that it would eliminate 2,000 jobs.

The AB InBev lawsuit by San Francisco lawyer Joseph Alioto on behalf of 23 consumers was filed on December 1 in federal court in Oregon. The drinkers, who said they have bought products made by either or both companies, as well as craft beers, seek to permanently bar the sale.

AB InBev believes the lawsuit claims are without merit and intends to vigorously defend against them, said John Blood, vice president of legal and corporate affairs.

“The U.S. beer market has never been more competitive, with strong growth from craft brewers, and nothing in this transaction will change that fact,” Blood said in a statement ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Waredaca Brewing Company ready to open on December 11
Montgomery County will welcome another brewery this month when Waredaca Brewing Company, housed on a farm in Laytonsville, opens Dec. 11, BethesdaMagazine.com reported.

The business announced the opening on December 1, writing in a statement it will offer “independent, local and fresh beer brewed on the farm that has been in the founder’s family for three generations.”

Jessica Snyder, a member of the extended Butts family that has owned the horse farm since the 1930s, said the family decided to open a brewery to repurpose an underutilized building on the farm. One of the partners in the brewery, Keith Kohr, was brewing for Flying Dog in Frederick before joining Waredaca, Snyder said.

The brewery has a 10-barrel system and it uses hops and other ingredients such as herbs and honey that are grown or produced at the farm to make its beers. Snyder said the brewery will offer a lemon verbena IPA, honey wheat, coffee stout and farmhouse saison when it opens next week.

The taproom can seat about 100 customers and offers views of the horse pastures. The brewery is at 4017 Damascus Road, about a 40-minute drive from Bethesda.

Brewery news USA, MI: ThumbCoast Brewing Company plans to start distributing its beers to local restaurants and bars next year
ThumbCoast Brewing Company of Port Huron, MI will be distributing beer to restaurants and bars by the first quarter of 2016, The Times Herald reported on December 3.

Their taproom location at 330 Quay St., Port Huron, will remain unchanged — at least for now.

Currently the brewery is able to produce about 400 barrels of beer a year using a 7-barrel system. Consumers may drink the locally brewed beer only at the taproom or by taking a growler home.

The current taproom is 8,500 square feet with about a third of that space reserved for brewing.

Dennis Doyle, ThumbCoast owner, said it has hit its maximum production ability and will need a larger space in order to fill the demand of distribution.

Doyle is currently searching for a 10,000-square-foot facility in the Port Huron area with at least a 20-foot ceiling to accommodate a 20-barrel system that would be able to produce 10,000 barrels of beer a year. He expects to close on a building by the end of the year.

Doyle, 49, purchased the current building in December 2013 and had a grand re-opening of the former Quay Street Brewing Co. in spring 2014 under the ThumbCoast name.

Prior to moving to Port Huron in ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Axe & Barrels Brewing joins British Columbia’s craft beer scene
British Columbia’s craft-beer-crazy capital region on the southern tip of Vancouver Island has gained another brewery with the recent opening of Axe & Barrel Brewing in the city of Langford, Canadian Beer News reported on December 1.

Launched by owner Ron P. Cheeke and brewer Dave Woodward, Axe & Barrel started pouring its beers at select pubs in the area in early autumn, and officially opened its taproom and growler bar on October 30th at 2323 Millstream Avenue, previously the Loghouse Pub.

Renovations on the restaurant portion of the space are underway, and it will be reopening as the Axe & Barrel Barbecue Brewhouse once the upgrades are complete.

Brewery news USA, LA: Cajun Brewing taps its first kegs of Belgian witbier
Cajun Brewing tapped its first kegs on December 3 for the grand opening of Lafayette's first microbrewery, KATC Lafayette News reported.

Cajun Wit is the name of the brewers' first signature brew to hit the market.

"It's a Belgian witbier," said Cajun Brewing general manager Chad Lege. "We do have two other beers that are lined up to come soon after. It's a red ale which is yet to be named, and a brown ale which is also yet to be named."

For the first year, the microbrewery's beers will only be found in bars, restaurants and by the keg in some local stores.

"Today is our official launch onto the market," said Lege. "We've been preparing for this since September. We've been brewing beer, trying to get some stock up."

By the second year, the plan is to start bottling beers on site.

"We're super excited to have this be our first day on the market, so we're going to be out on the town with free shirts and glasses so if you guys sees us, stop us and get some free swag," said Lege.

Right now customers can find Cajun Brewing products at bars like The Greenroom in downtown Lafayette, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Four Fathers Brewing set to open soon near Rockwood
Ontario Beer Network reports that a new brewery is getting set to open soon near Rockwood, a village outside of the city of Guelph in Southwestern Ontario.

Four Fathers Brewing has been in the planning stages for several years now, but has made a big step toward being operational with the hiring of head brewer Kevin Freer (previously at Wellington Brewery).

Brewery co-founder Mike Hruden tells OBN that unlike most new breweries that launch with a retail store and tasting room, Four Fathers will have no public access, and will instead have its beer available in 750 ml bottles at select pubs and restaurants, with LCBO distribution being considered for the future.

The brewery will also be running a “Friends of the Four” club that will offer “very limited runs of Premium style beers (Saison, Belgian, DIPA, Imperial Stouts, Sours, Barrel Aged…)” exclusively to members.

Brewery news USA, CA: Iron Triangle Brewing to launch in Los Angeles later than planned
Craft beer fans in downtown Los Angeles will have to wait a bit longer for the anticipated Iron Triangle Brewing, which is coming to a former warehouse in the Arts District, LA Downtown News Online reported on December 3.

The establishment at 1581 Industrial St. was slated to open late last month, but delays with alcohol permits have pushed the planned soft opening to mid-December, according to Iron Triangle Vice President Kale Bittner.

The tasting bar in the 10,000-square-foot space (the company has plans to more than double its size next year) is finished, and beer is already brewing in fermentation tanks, he added.

Iron Triangle will focus on “session” beers (or those with lower alcohol — closer to 5% than the 7%-10% found in many big craft beers), with six to nine offerings when it formally opens in January, Bittner said.

Iron Triangle is but one of several breweries that are part of a Downtown beer boom. Others include the recently opened Mumford Brewing and the upcoming Boomtown, Arts District Brewing and Denmark-based microbrewery Mikkeller.

Brewery news Canada, NS: Labatt/AB InBev to turn its historic Alexander Keith’s Brewery into a small batch production facility
Oland Brewery – a division of Labatt/AB InBev – has announced that the historic Alexander Keith’s Brewery in downtown Halifax is currently undergoing a C$1.5 million upgrade and will soon be going back into service as a small batch production brewery, Canadian Beer News reported on November 25.

The 195-year-old facility has not been operating as a brewery for a number of years, although tours and events have still been taking place.

The newly refurbished brewery will have an initial capacity of 2,000 hectolitres, and will focus on a producing craft-oriented beers that will be available in growlers, 650 ml bottles, and six-packs, with retail sales on-site and at select NSLC locations.

Brewing is expected to start in April, and the final decisions on the styles and brands to be brewed there will be made once a brewmaster is hired for the facility.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Underdog’s Brewhouse changes its name to All Or Nothing Brewhouse
Underdog’s Brewhouse has announced that it has changed its name to All Or Nothing Brewhouse due to a trademark dispute with another unnamed brewery, Canadian Beer News reported on December 1.

According to a statement by the company, “a fellow craft brewery served a Statement of Claim, alleging that the name “Underdog” violated a trademark that brewery had been using for a few years. It should be noted that prior to establishing the company, all necessary steps for ensuring that no Underdog trademark was already registered were conducted.”

The new name was already in use by Underdog’s as the brand name its flagship beer, All or Nothing Hopfenweisse, which is currently being brewed under contract while co-owners and brothers Jeff and Eric Dornan work towards opening a bricks and mortar brewing location.

Newly branded cans of All or Nothing Hopfenweisse are rolling out now at LCBO locations throughout Ontario.

Brewery news Jamaica: Heineken now owns more than 80% of Desnoes & Geddes, to take it private
Heineken has surpassed the hurdle of owning more than four-fifths of the total shareholding in brewery Desnoes & Geddes (D&G), which trades as Red Stripe Jamaica, that will allow the new owner to take the company private, Jamaica Gleaner reported on December 4.

"We are solidly over the 80 per cent mark and the significance of that is that it will trigger a mandatory delisting," said Ramon Pitter, vice-president of investment banking and group mergers at NCB Capital Markets, on December 2.

When pressed on the percentage now owned by Heineken, Pitter said only that the percentage changes daily. Heineken already owned nearly three-quarters of Red Stripe when it opened its mandatory offer to minority shareholders last month. The offer closes on December 22 with an option to extend.

In early November, Heineken announced its intention to acquire 100 per cent shares in D&G. At the time, Heineken indicated that it would spend up to US$194 million to acquire the remaining shares in the company. This followed its purchase of Diageo Plc's 57.9 per cent shareholding in the company on October 7, a deal that took Heineken group's holding to 73.3 per cent at the time.

Minority owners will be paid at the same ...More info on site

Brewery news Ukraine: Brewers alarmed by possible beer excises doubling
Ukraine’s beer market could fall by up to 30% in 2016 if the excise duties are doubled, Denys Khrenov, acting Director General of SUN InBev Ukraine, was quoted as saying by Interfax on December 4.

"Despite the last year increase by 42.5%, the excise duty collected in January-September 2015 fell by UAH 62 million (3.2%) year-over-year. What does it mean? The goal to replenish the budget has not been achieved," he said.

He said that in January-November 2015 the nation’s breweries produced 20% less beer than a year ago.

"The revenues from the excise duty may be larger in the beginning, but even in the medium term outlook the effect will gradually decrease, until sales decline. As for other payments, VAT, profit tax, income tax and other taxes, they will fall not only at breweries, but also throughout the whole chain – from farmers to the retail chain, eating the whole positive from the excise duty revenue," Khrenov said.

Carlsberg Ukraine is also alarmed by the draft bill aiming at sharp increase of the excise duties by 100% from January 1, 2016.

Brewery news South Korea: Large supermarkets report decline in domestic beer sales and soaring numbers for import brands
While sales of domestic beer are declining at large supermarkets in South Korea, foreign beer sales are rising rapidly, The Korea Bizwire reported on December 3.

According to Emart, a large retailer, sales of domestic canned beer and PET bottled beer from January to November fell 2.2 percent and 6.4 percent respectively compared to the same period last year, but sales of foreign beer increased 18.7 percent.

Imported beer took up 32.2 percent of beer sales at Emart in 2013, increasing to 34.4 percent in 2014 and 39 percent between January and November of this year. The sales increased 43.8 percent last month.

Unlike foreign beer sold at restaurants and bars, imported beer sold at supermarkets is usually consumed at home. This could be interpreted as a change in the preference of consumers from domestic beer to foreign beer.

Emart currently sells 50 different types of domestic beer and 200 different types of foreign beer. The popular foreign brands are Heineken, Asahi, Hoegaarden, Paulaner Brewery, Bear Beer, Sapporo, Guinness, Tsingtao and Pilsner Urquell.

Foreign beer also represents more than 40 percent of the total sales of beer at Homeplus, and sales of foreign beer are also increasing at Lotte Mart.

Brewery news UK & China: British brewer Greene King enjoys soaring exports to China thanks to President Xi Jinping
British brewer Greene King on December 2 said exports of its India pale ale (IPA) to China had increased sixteen-fold after President Xi Jinping was photographed enjoying a pint during his recent state visit, Al Arabiya News reported.

The brewer has shipped 50,000 cases of the hoppy beer to China after Xi’s visit to The Plough pub in Buckinghamshire, southern England, with Prime Minister David Cameron during October’s trip.

“If the British prime minister chooses to drink IPA that’s normal, but if the president of China chooses to drink a British beer it attracts lots of interest,” Greene King chief executive Rooney Anand said.

“We’ve had a sixteen-fold increase in orders from China for IPA in the last few weeks and 50,000 cases are on a boat now to arrive in time for Chinese New Year.”

Pictures of Xi sipping the pint and eating fish and chips soon appeared on social media, helping promote the image of him as a down-to-earth leader.

India pale ales were developed in the 19 century to survive the long sea journey from Britain to colonists in India.

The export boost helped the pub group, based in Suffolk, eastern England, boost profits in the first six months of its year by ...More info on site
