MORE BITTER TRUTH ABOUT HARD RESINS

ABSTRACT
What is the influence of hard resins on the reactions in beer during storage? This was the question of this Japanese research team. For this work the compositional changes of hard resins were investigated using a beer aging model. The hard resins contained a series of alpha-acid oxides. Among them, 4'-hydroxyallohumulinones proved to be unstable during beer storage. In conclusion these researchers were able to show that compositional changes in the hard resins derived from stored hops that occur in beer during storage are attributed mainly to the proton-catalyzed cyclization reaction of 4'-hydroxyallohumulinones. Novel polycyclic compounds, namely, scorpiohumulinols and dicyclohumulinols have been identified and shown to be stable relative to their precursors. Still it is unclear what the sensory consequences of these changes are; this need to be investigated.

Brewery news USA: North Carolina legislators ask the Senate to investigate MillerCoors’ decision to close brewery in Eden
North Carolina state legislators have asked the U.S. Senate to investigate MillerCoors’ decision to close its brewery in Eden, Greensboro.com reported on December 7.

The plant’s closure, announced in September, will eliminate more than 500 jobs in the city.

Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and Rep. Bert Jones, both Republicans, sent a letter co-signed by 112 state lawmakers to the U.S. Senate’s Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights subcommittee of which North Carolina’s U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis is a member.

According to the letter, the legislators want representatives of MillerCoors’ parent company, SABMiller, to explain why it announced the closing of Eden’s brewery three days before it began merger discussions with Budweiser’s parent company, AB InBev.

The legislators also want to know whether the decision was made in advance of the merger so the combined companies would not be labeled a monopoly by the U.S. Department of Justice.

“Given that in the last few years alone MillerCoors has approved new contracts for local brewery workers, signed a 25-year agreement with the city of Eden and undertaken a 70,000 square-foot facility expansion, why would it shut down the brewery after those major investments?” the legislators wrote.

The Associated Press reported in November that when the merger ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance secures $50 mln credit facility for strategic projects and long-term growth
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading craft brewing company, announced on December 5 that it has secured a $50 million credit facility with Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The new credit facility increases CBA’s overall borrowing capacity and takes advantage of favorable interest rates to support the company’s strategic projects and long-term growth while providing more flexibility to borrow and repay funds.

“As the craft beer market becomes increasingly complex and competitive, we’re confident that CBA’s differentiated strategy, expertise in craft brewing and branding, and national brewing and distribution capability will drive significant value for our business, our partners, and our shareholders,” said Joe Vanderstelt, chief financial officer, CBA. “As we continue building the CBA of the future, this new financing package provides increased access to funds and financial flexibility to support the key capital projects and strategic partnerships that will enable our long-term vision. We’re pleased to continue working with the team at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and appreciate their continued confidence and support of our business.”

Earlier this year, CBA announced plans to expand its largest-production brewery in Portland by 200,000 barrels, build a new sustainability-focused 100,000 barrel brewery in Hawaii to support the growth of Kona Brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks to finally open own brewery in Richmond
After several years of operating as a “gypsy brewery” using the facilities of other breweries throughout British Columbia to produce its beer, Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks has announced the opening of its production brewery in Richmond, Canadian Beer News reported on December 8.

Founded by long-time homebrewers and “geek culture” aficionados Dan Fuggles and Tony Warlock with partner Tom Orange, Fuggles & Warlock – which has the motto “Keeping Beer Weird” – has most recently been producing its beers at Dead Frog Brewery in Aldergrove while the brewery at 11224 Horseshoe Way in Richmond was being built out.

The first beers produced at the new facility will be available soon in stores and bars throughout BC, and an on-site tasting room and retail store will be opening in February.

Brewery news USA, VA: Stone Brewing’s Richmond facility to begin brewing in late April
Stone Brewing Co. should begin brewing beer at its Richmond manufacturing plant in late April, Richmond.com reported on December 4.

Stone IPA and Arrogant Bastard, two of the company’s popular year-round beers, should be ready for distribution in June, Stone brewmaster Mitch Steele said.

The update came on December 4 as company, city and state officials celebrated the construction progress of Stone’s East Coast production facility in Fulton, east of downtown Richmond.

Stone has begun installing its brewing system inside the 216,000-square-foot plant by lowering tanks and equipment through openings in the removable roofing panels.

The plant was designed so sections of the roof can be removed so tanks can be lowered into the plant by cranes.

On December 4, Stone held a “Raise the Roof” ceremony to mark that phase of the process.

Officials attending the event included Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Todd Haymore, Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones and Stone co-founders Greg Koch and Steve Wagner.

After the event, McAuliffe, Haymore and others climbed to the roof to see the eight fermentation tanks and four brite tanks, visible from the road, and to see where the equipment will be lowered into the plant. The roof has space for a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WY: Danielmark's Brewing Company Inc. hopes to have federal permit by mid-December
To be able to start production, Danielmark's Brewing Company Inc. in Cheyenne, WY must wait for a federal permit from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), Wyoming Tribune reported on December 4.

Kim Combs, one of the entrepreneurs in the brewery venture, said Danielmark's applied for the permit several months ago, and the estimated wait time for the process was about 115 days - making Dec. 16 the day the procedure is supposed to be complete.

"It's been a really hard process for us," Combs said of the wait time.

Incidentally, because Danielmark's applied for the permit in the summer, it may not have it as bad as other ventures.

For brewery permits requested in October, for example, the wait time has ballooned to nearly 144 days, according to the TTB website.

Those wait times are in spite of the agency saying its "goal is to process applications within 75 days of receipt."

Nevertheless, the owners of Danielmark's are excited to get open.

Once the TTB grants the brewery permit, Combs said the pub will open once beer has been made, about a two-week process.

Thus, if the permit is received Dec. 16, the brewery could be open in time for New Year's Eve, though ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Red Cypress Brewery launched in Winter Springs
Red Cypress Brewery in Winter Springs is the latest addition to Central Florida's growing craft beer scene, Orlando Sentinel reported on December 4.

The Winter Springs brewery opened its production facility and 180-seat taproom last month in a shopping center on State Road 434 less than a mile from Central Winds Park.

Founded by UCF graduate Ryan Parker, the brewery joins a number of micro-breweries now operating in Central Florida, including Ten10 Brewing, Orlando Brewing, HourGlass Brewing, Crooked Can Brewing Co. and Wops Hops in Sanford.

Parker said he chose the location in Winter Springs because he wanted to be close to the University of Central Florida, which is about 10 miles away.

Parker called Red Cypress a "true production brewery," meaning the beer is made on-site. The production area and the large vats needed to make the beer are visible from the taproom and outside patio.

"We start from the very beginning with water and brew beer here," Parker said. "We control every aspect of our beer."

Red Cypress offers beers in a range of styles, including an IPA, a pale ale, a honey brown ale, a gose, a saison, a red ale and an imperial stout. All are available at the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Frank Brewing just opened in Tecumseh
The rapidly expanding craft brewing community of Southwestern Ontario grew again, with the opening on December 8th of Frank Brewing in Tecumseh, just outside of Windsor, Canadian Beer News reported.

Founded by Shane Meloche, owner of nearby bar and grill Johnny Shotz, Frank is planned to be “a unique craft brewery that celebrates our rich past while creating an exciting new era in local brewing.”

Located at 12000 Tecumseh Rd. E., the Frank facility includes a 15 barrel brewhouse with three 30 barrel fermenters and two 15 barrel fermenters, as well as a 2,400 square foot taproom offering a selection of Frank beers along with a food menu focused on pizzas and deli sandwiches.

The initial line-up of beers from the brewery will include No Nonsense Lagered Ale (5.4% abv, 21 IBU), Big Harvest Dark Wheat (5.2% abv, 14 IBU), Simple Man Oatmeal Stout (6.1% abv, 22 IBU), Smooth Hoperator Pale Ale (4.4% abv, 32 IBU), and Old Comrade Amber Lager (4.7% abv, 21 IBU).

Brewery news USA, PA: Cave Brewing Co. receives federal license approval
Salisbury Township resident Jeff Bonner started brewing beer 26 years ago.

Now, he's officially fully licensed to do so, Allentown Morning Call reported on December 4.

Bonner said on December 4 that his brewery, Cave Brewing Co., has received federal license approval. The brewery already had local and state approval.

The approval came just in the nick of time, allowing Cave Brewing to be one of the dozens of breweries serving craft beer during the Fegley's Brew Works Craft Beer Festival on December 5 at Allentown Brew Works.

Bonner, also a nuclear estimator at Talen Energy, said his brewery is based off the farm-to-mug concept. In the nano-brewery's first year, Bonner previously said he plans to produce 100 to 150 barrels.

According to the state's records, Cave Brewing is the fifth active brewery in Lehigh County, joining Funk Brewing Co. in Emmaus, Allentown Brew Works in the city's downtown, HiJinx Brewing Co. in the Bridgeworks Enterprise Center in Allentown and The Boston Beer Co. in Breinigsville.

In Northampton County, state records show there are three breweries: Two Rivers Brewing Co. and Weyerbacher Brewing Co., both in Easton, and Bethlehem Brew Works.

Brewery news USA, HI: Honolulu’s Hoku Brewing Co. closes for good
Hoku Brewing Co., which had been open for a little more than a year in the former Aloha Beer Co. space next to Liliha Bakery’s second location in Honolulu, has closed for good, the broker who was marketing the sale of the business confirmed to PBN.

Located at 580 North Nimitz Highway, the 120-seat Hoku Brewing is owned by a local family who also owned the shuttered Hee Hing Restaurant in the Hee Hing Plaza on Kapahulu Avenue.

The brewery and restaurant business was on the market for $850,000, but the property’s owner, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, has taken back the property, Daniel Jarrett, vice president of Honolulu-based Newmark Grubb CBI Inc., who was marketing the sale of the business, told PBN on December 8.

Brewery news USA, MA: Barrel House Z hopes to open in Weymouth by May 2016
A pioneer in the craft-brewing movement is hoping to tap into South Shore beer lovers’ thirst for something a little bit different with a new brewery in Weymouth, The Patriot Ledger reported on December 8.

Russ Heissner, who was the first brewmaster at Harpoon Brewery when it opened in Boston, recently leased a 9,600-square-foot space on Woodrock Road and plans to open Barrel House Z, a brewery focusing on small-batch, barrel-aged beers, by the middle of next year.

“It’s been a lot of fits and starts to this point, but now, with the lease signed, it’s go time,” he said. “We’re very excited.”

About two years ago, Heissner started talking with Harpoon, where he worked from its start in 1986 to 1992, and Boston’s Bully Boy Distillers about forming a standing relationship as the basis for a new brewery. Harpoon brewers will collaborate on some of Barrel House Z’s rotating offerings, and the distillery will supply whiskey and rum barrels in which the new brews will be aged to augment the flavor.

Harpoon and Bully Boy are minority stakeholders in the new brewery.

Heissner left Harpoon to work for a company that designed and built breweries and later moved to a bio-fuel company. But he ...More info on site

Brewery news China: China’s beer market inspires optimism in EU craft brewers
Eddie Schweda, the owner of Danish microbrewery, Midtfyns Bryghus, has just returned from a promotional tour to China, where his products are already selling well, GBTimes reported on December 8. “We had beer tastings in Shanghai and Chiangsha where we got a very positive response,” he said. “Chinese consumers are very responsive to our products. They demand more quality than what the typical binge-drinking products can offer and understand that specialized beers are products of enjoyment,” Eddie Schweda explains.

China is already a huge beer market with the Chinese consuming 54 billion litres of beer in 2014, the majority made by domestic producers. According to a EU-SME report, China also imported 335 million litres of beer, a year-on-year increase of 85.4 per cent. The majority of China's beer import is, according to the report, coming out of European breweries, and estimates say that the Chinese growth in beer import is only going to increase. “Everything we see and everything we hear points to that direction,” says Eddie Schweda. “There are many copied products on the Chinese market, but the Chinese consumer demands more than that. More Chinese consumers can afford to buy imported beer, and they do that because they want ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Brewers waiting for law facilitating sales of low and zero alcohol beer in supermarkets
New Zealand’s low and zero alcohol beer producers fear losing out on bumper summer profits because a law change allowing their drinks to be stocked in the booze aisle for the first time, will not happen fast enough, stuff.co.nz reported on December 6.

A bill changing the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 was due to be introduced into parliament on Monday, December 7, but will not come into force until next year at the earliest.

The wording of the Act has means beer and wine with alcohol levels of 1.15 per cent and below must to be kept separate from more potent drinks, which have to be displayed within a designated area to limit shoppers' exposure to them.

Brewers welcomed the law change last week, but said the outdated rules continued to make their low alcohol drinks harder to find.

They fear missing out on bigger sales as temperatures rise and shoppers buy alcohol for Christmas and summer parties.

Brewers' Guild of New Zealand president Emma McCashin said there had been a huge rise in demand and development of the zero per cent and low alcohol beer market in New Zealand, following a global trend.

"We want this to continue, but not being able ...More info on site

Barley news Ireland: Spring barley area expected to decline further next year
Ireland’s area of spring barley is set to decline further in 2016, according to Teagasc.

In its update on the estimated winter crop areas for 2016 it said the autumn of 2015 has been very favourable for drilling winter crops.

Consequently, it says the area of winter cereals is estimated to have risen slightly for harvest 2016 to 146,000 ha.

Teagasc says the reason for this trend of increasing drillings of winter barley is due to the 2/3 crop rule and its reliable performance in recent years.

It says the area of winter wheat has risen this autumn, most likely due to the favourable drilling conditions but also due to the high yields in 2015 and price differential over barley.

According to Teagasc, it is likely that the area of spring barley will decline further in 2016 to balance most of the increased winter cereal area.

The area of spring barley fell once again in 2015 to 132,400 ha, mainly as a result of the 2/3 crop rule.

It said winter crops have enjoyed relatively good conditions since drilling and it has been an excellent autumn for plant establishment with the majority of crops having very high plant counts.

In October 2015, Ukraine exported 414.1 thousand tonnes of barley. Despite the fact that it was a record high monthly level since season 2009/10 (807.5 thousand tonnes of barley were exported in October 2009), during four months of the 2015/16 season exports of barley from Ukraine were still 11% lower than last year, Black Sea Grain reported on December 3.

This season, China and Japan joined the major importers of Ukrainian barley and significantly increased their purchases compared to last year.

From July till October 2015, China imported more than 444.7 thousand tonnes of barley from Ukraine against 250.9 thousand in season 2014/15. And during the first four months of the season Japan has already imported 300% more barley from Ukraine than during the whole last season (147 thousand tonnes in July-October 2015 compared with 33.5 thousand tonnes in 2014/15). Thus, these countries imported 20% of all barley exported from Ukraine in the current season compared to 3.4% during the same period last year.
