MECHANICS OF DRY HOPPING
ABSTRACT
A crucial part when talking about dry hopping is
handling parameters, e.g. how much do hop particles
swell during dry hopping, and is particle size
distribution of importance? Does temperature affect
process parameters, etc? This German team looked into
various parameters and found that different methods
for stirring and mixing, as well as different contact
times have only little effect in regards to particle size
distribution, but they found that wet density increased
with increasing temperatures and permeability
decreases with increasing temperatures.

Taiwan & Vietnam: Gold Medal Taiwan Beer reportedly close to signing deal on opening brewery in Vietnam
|
Gold Medal Taiwan Beer, a century-old brand brewed by the state-owned Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corp., will open a brewery in Vietnam in the near future, a source familiar with the matter was quoted as saying by China Post on December 14.
After more than two years of market survey and assessment, the state-owned enterprise has decided to partner with Sapporo Vietnam Co. Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of Japan's Sapporo International Inc., which will handle production of its beer in Vietnam, the source said.
The Taiwanese and Japanese companies are expected to sign a contract on December 17 at Taiwan Trade Center's representative office in Ho Chi Minh City, and R.O.C. Representative to Vietnam Huang Chih-peng will also be present, the source said.
Under the deal, Sapporo Vietnam will be responsible for production of Taiwan Beer in the southern province of Long An near Ho Chi Minh City, while a Vietnamese company will handle the marketing, according to the source.
Taiwan Beer is expected to hit the Vietnamese market before March 2016, in the first overseas venture by Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corp. in alcoholic products.
The company is also aiming to expand sales to other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) markets via

Spain & India: Mahou SA eyeing potential launch of its San Miguel beer in India
|
Spanish beer giant Mahou SA is eying a potential launch of San Miguel beer to boost its presence in the Indian market. Mahou, which owns he trademark in Europe, has had early discussions with San Miguel Corporation (SMC) of Philippines in this regard, The Financial Times reported on December 16.
The Manila-based food and beverage giant holds the rights or San Miguel in India.
Mahou had acquired San Miguel Fabricas de Cerveza SA as part of a consolidation move to create the largest brewing group in Spain. Mahou entered India three years ago through a joint venture with Arian Breweries in Rajasthan, and later took full control of the company , making a significant step in its international expansion.
Mahou managing director Alberto Rodriguez Toquero said the company and SMC have discussed possibilities of working together to make San Miguel a bigger international brand. These discussions have covered possible cooperation in India, where Mahou operates its first international subsidiary, he added. "We may not make money in India for long, but we believe it's a great market for the next generation of Mahou shareholders," Toquero said.
The privately held Mahou's reported revenue and EBITDA are 1.2-billion euros and 254-million euros,

This month Ethiopia’s beer market witnessed another milestone. Vasari, a UK-based asset management firm Duet Group (Duet) with 51% share in Dashen Brewery inaugurated a 2 million hectolitres beer production capacity per year plant, New Business Ethiopia reported on December 12.
At the inaugural of the country’s largest brewery plant in Debre Birhan city, 100km north east of Addis Ababa, Vasari announced its new investment of $150 million in Dashen Brewery. “We have brought the most advanced brewery in Africa – and one of the most advanced in the world – to Ethiopia. This is a clear sign of our confidence in Ethiopia and it complements our growing portfolio in the country,” said, Vivian Imerman, CEO of Vasari Global.
The new plant is expected to hire 500 permanent and 1,000 temporary workers. The new brewery followed the $156 million Walia Brewery’s plant with 1.5 million hectolitres of beer production capacity inaugurated a year ago by the Dutch’s multinational, Heineken.

Argentina: New president announces large tax cuts on agricultural exports
|
Argentina's new pro-business president, Mauricio Macri, announced large tax cuts on agricultural exports on December 14, fulfilling a key campaign pledge but raising fears of grain and soybean gluts on world markets, Yahoo News UK reported.
Macri, who took office on December 10, had promised to slash the South American farming giant's steep taxes on agricultural exports, which triggered major protests by producers against former president Cristina Kirchner's administration.
Export taxes will be eliminated altogether for wheat, corn and sorghum, and for soybeans the tax will drop from 35 percent to 30 percent, Agriculture Minister Ricardo Buryaile told reporters.
Taxes on wheat and corn exports were previously 23 and 20 percent, respectively.
"I am going to sign the decree today," Macri said in a speech to farmers in the town of Pergamino, in the heart of the Argentine Pampas, the fertile plains that are the national breadbasket.
The taxes had been introduced in 2008 under Kirchner.
Protests over the steep rates paralyzed the agriculture sector that year and turned into a crisis for her government.
Farmers accused Kirchner of saddling the agricultural industry with an unfair share of the national tax burden, hurting their international competitiveness.
Macri vowed those days were over.
"Let's not think of things in terms

Canada: Japan’s Zen-Noh Grain Corp. and GrainCorp establish new grain joint venture in Canada
|
A major Japanese farm co-operative and the Australian owner of Canada Malting are staking a new joint claim in Canada’s Prairie grain handling sector, CountryGuide reported on December 14.
Tokyo-based Zen-Noh Grain Corp. (ZGC) and Sydney-based GrainCorp on December 14 announced plans to build new grain origination sites in Alberta and Saskatchewan, through a 50/50 Canadian-incorporated joint venture to be based in Calgary.
GrainCorp said the companies are now “actively looking” at sites in both provinces for what will be “a fully integrated supply chain for the origination, marketing, storage, handling, distribution and exporting of Canadian grain and oilseed.”
The joint venture, dubbed GrainsConnect Canada, is budgeted for C$120 million in its start-up phase, including construction and commissioning at its yet-to-be-chosen sites.
GrainCorp said it will put up C$30 million from its own cash and debt facilities for that phase; Australian media report that ZGC will put up another C$30 million. The joint venture will source the remaining C$60 million from financial institutions, GrainCorp said.
Pending due diligence on potential sites and the customary regulatory and planning approvals, construction is to be staged “progressively” from the latter half of fiscal 2016 through to the end of fiscal 2018, GrainCorp said.
GrainsConnect considers Alberta and Saskatchewan “attractive”
