Spain & USA: Mahou San Miguel reportedly interested in minority stake in Anchor Brewers & Distillers
|
Spanish Mahou San Miguel is reportedly looking to up its presence in the U.S. craft beer market.
The Spanish brewer, which took a 30% interest in Michigan’s Founders Brewing last year, is now eyeing a potential minority stake in San Francisco-based Anchor Brewers & Distillers, Bloomberg reported, citing unnamed sources. The report added that Mahou San Miguel could invest up to $300 million in Anchor, which is known for its Anchor Steam beer brand. Anchor didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Led by former Skyy Spirits executives Keith Greggor and Tony Foglio, Anchor ranks as the 22nd-largest craft brewer in the U.S., according to the Brewers Association. Its distilling unit, which has a partnership with the U.K.’s Berry Bros. & Rudd, markets brands including The Glenrothes and BenRiach single malts, Nikka Japanese whisky and The King’s Ginger and Luxardo liqueurs, among others.

USA, OH: Crooked Handle Brewing opens in Springboro
|
Springboro's new brewery has set an opening date, Dayton Business Journal reported on December 24.
Crooked Handle Brewing Co. posted on its Facebook page that it would be open 4 p.m. to midnight Christmas.
The brewery listed its holiday hours on Facebook as 4 p.m. to midnight Christmas Day, 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and 11 a.m. to midnight New Year’s Day.
Crooked Handle is the latest development in a local brewery boom, with popular breweries expanding, giving new life to old spaces, providing local options, and fostering community pride.
The brewery first announced in May that it signed a five-year lease for a 3,500-square-foot space in the Marketplace at Settlers Walk shopping center in Springboro.
Business partners Jason Moore and Jeff Pedro Jr. said at the time that they had been preparing to open a brewery for the last two years and after landing some investors earlier this year, were ready to move forward with the project.
Crooked Handle will add to the region's bustling brewery scene that has seen a dozen open in the past few years.

USA, MI: New Holland Brewing expects 24% growth this year
|
In a year-end note to distributors, Adam Lambert, the former Dogfish Head sales grunt who took his talents to New Holland Brewing late last year, said the Michigan-based craft brewery would be up 24 percent in 2015, Brewbound reported on December 29.
The company’s top performing brands include Dragon’s Milk bourbon barrel stout, which was up 48 percent, and Mad Hatter IPA, which was up more than 20 percent. Poet, an oatmeal stout, was also up more than 20 percent, Lambert said.
“Overall, we’ve had one hell of a year,” he wrote.
Since joining the company, Lambert helped the organization open four new markets — Dallas, Baltimore, Las Vegas and South Dakota. He also managed a number of wholesaler transitions, including the integration of 29 new distributors in both new and existing states — most of which were the result of unplanned consolidation.
“Our beer network has now reached 93 wholesalers in 28 states,” he said.
In its expansion, New Holland also hired five regional managers and two additional sales support staff.
Seasonal products — which in 2015 were “brewed to wholesaler order” and make up just 14 percent of the company’s business — were down slightly. Limited release offerings, which account for just 12 percent

USA, AL: Cahaba Brewing Co. one step closer to opening new location in Birmingham
|
Birmingham's Cahaba Brewing Co. is one step closer to opening its new location, Birmingham Business Journal reported on December 29.
The Magic City brewery received its certificate of occupancy from the city council earlier this month, and will open within the first month of 2016 at building C of the Continental Gin campus at 4500 Fifth Ave. S.
“While it will open after Christmas, thanks to the awesome job of our partners, the new location feels like a gift waiting under the tree,” said Eric Meyer, head brewer and partner. “Once we receive our city, state and federal licenses, the taproom will be open to the public.”
Cahaba plans to host a grand opening celebration in the spring.
“One of my favorite things about our current taproom is that it feels like you’re hanging out in your buddy’s garage. People stop by after work or hang out on the weekends and feel comfortable bringing their families,” Meyer said.
Meyer said it was important to maintain consistency at the new location, and customers will notice similarities with the old location in the concrete countertops and elements of wood, metal and brick.
Rives Construction Company served as the general contractor on the project and Williams Blackstock Architects served

USA, OR: 10 Barrel Brewing leases property in Denver to expand production
|
Bend-based 10 Barrel Brewing Co. has leased property in Denver’s River North neighborhood for a potential pub, brewery co-founder Garrett Wales was quoted as saying by Bend Bulletin on December 24.
While the property is secured, 10 Barrel’s managers have yet to decide what exactly they’ll do there, a bar and eatery or a full-on brewpub with brewing on the premises, Wales said.
“We do have a lease signed,” he said, “but at this stage we’re still working on long-term ideas on what model that building will fit into.”
The company, purchased in 2014 by international beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev, has brewpubs in Boise and Portland, as well as its original pub on NW Galveston Avenue, Bend. The brewery is located on NE 18th Street, Bend.
The space in Denver leased by 10 Barrel, 2620 Walnut St., is an 8,000 square-foot entertainment venue called Casselman’s Bar & Venue, according to BusinessDen.com, an online news site. Representatives of Casselman’s and the property owner, 2620 Walnut Street LLC, of Denver, could not be reached. Denver property records show the LLC bought the property in October for $1.8 million.

Canada, NS: Battery Park brewpub launched in Dartmouth
|
Downtown Dartmouth has a brand new craft beer store and brewpub, CBC.ca reported on December 23.
Battery Park, a collaboration between North Brewing, Ace Burger and Brooklyn Warehouse, just opened on an already bustling block of Ochterloney Street.
Business has been "amazing," said co-owner George Christakos.
"It's exceeded our expectations. This is a pretty special place to do business. The people of Dartmouth support their own."
In fact, Battery Park is the latest in a string of independent food and retail shops in the area, said Tim Rissesco, executive director of the Downtown Dartmouth Business Association.
"We are getting a food scene," he said.
"People are never going to have a reason to go anywhere else, but downtown Dartmouth."
The two-level business has a ground-floor craft beer store that carries beer from North Brewing. Starting in the new year, specialty batches of beer will be made there. The upstairs is home to the eatery.
Rissesco says reasonable rents are attracting first-time entrepreneurs and he's busy fielding calls.
"It's a lot of playing matchmaker, trying to find the right spot to fit people in," Rissesco said.
Christakos says the reasonable cost of housing in downtown Dartmouth is also a factor.
"There's a huge influx of young families moving here," he said. "I

USA, CA: Iron Triangle Brewing preparing for January opening in LA
|
The most ambitious L.A. Arts District craft beer project yet is Iron Triangle Brewing. The brewery, set to open in January, aims to be the next big thing in L.A.’s craft beer scene, Los Angeles Times reported on December 29.
Occupying a 10,000-square-foot building built in 1904, Iron Triangle brewing is outfitted to produce a lot of beer. The space, first a stable before being converted to a warehouse in the '20s, has a soaring wood trestle roof covering a dozen stainless steel fermenters and a gleaming brewhouse. The equipment was purchased and installed with an eye toward scaling production and growing the brewery, and a lease has already been signed for an additional 22,000 square feet next door that will house more fermentation space and a bottling line.
The new brewery will lead with three core brews. The nominal flagship, Iron Triangle Ale, is a golden-hued ale based loosely on the Wisconsin cult-favorite brew Spotted Cow. Built to be accessible yet able to please the beer geeks, this cream ale is light in body with a flavorful balance of cracker-like malts and the floral essence of European hops.
Iron Triangle Dark Ale was envisioned as an “approachable dark beer” that once

USA, VA: Tradition Brewing Co. to start building its brewery in Newport News in January
|
Tradition Brewing Co. plans to open by late spring next year in Oyster Point, Newport News, VA, the Daily Press reported on December 30.
"The proximity to three main destinations on the Peninsula — Port Warwick, The Marketplace at Tech Center and City Center at Oyster Point — will allow for first-of-their-kind collaborations within the local community and a high density of pedestrian traffic," co-founder and partner Gray Bowditch said.
The startup craft brewery said it signed a lease at 700 Thimble Shoals Blvd. just before the gateway to City Center. Tradition plans to have a 20-barrel brewing system, kegging operations, two walk-in refrigeration units and room to add a bottling line in a 6,700-square-foot production space.
The facility will also have a 4,200-square-foot tasting room where customers can observe the brewing process, according to a news release. A second-floor 1,450-square-foot mezzanine could host private parties or other events. A 620-square-foot conference room could host meetings.
"It's just a more exciting place to have a board meeting than a typical conference room," Tradition partner Marti Caldwell said.
Spacemakers Inc. of Norfolk was tapped for the construction, which starts in January. Tymoff & Moss Architects of Norfolk designed the space.

USA, MI: Lake Charlevoix Brewing Company looking to expand current operations
|
The Lake Charlevoix Brewing Company wants to expand its current operation by taking over a space that was rented by Keweenaw Excursions in Charlevoix, MI, Petoskey News reported on December 29.
On December 28, Rich Bergmann, co-owner of the brewery, presented his plan to the Main Street/Downtown Development Authority board.
“We are a brewpub today,” Bergmann said. “We can brew beer and sell it on premise only. To self-distribute, which is our next strategic step, we need to have a brewer's license. That requires us to have a separate address from the brewpub.”
That space the brewery would like to use is 109 Bridge Park Drive, which is labeled “ex-retail space” in the current Keweenaw Excursions lease.
According to Bergmann, Jason Funkey, co-owner of Keweenaw Excursions, informed brewery owners on Nov. 9 that they were selling the boat, boat equipment and office supplies.
On Nov. 19, brewery co-owner and newly elected Charlevoix City Council member Aaron Hagen and Bergmann met confidentially with Main Street/Downtown Development Authority director Annie Doyle and city manager Mark Heydlauff to discuss plans the brewery owners have for that space.
“They presented their intentions for the space and that was it,” Doyle said. “No agreements were made with the brewery about renting

Serbia: Beer sales in Serbia dropping every year by 1-2%
|
Beer sales in Serbia are dropping every year by one or two percent due to changes in the structure of the market, according to a leading drinks industry representative quoted by ESM on December 24.
In an interview for local daily Blic, the CEO of Carlsberg South-East Europe, Gabor Bekefi, explained that sales of cheap beer are rising as people want to save, while when going out Serbians are prepared to pay for quality premium beer, boosting consumption in this segment as well. However, on the downside, sales of mainstream beer are suffering.
Significantly, sales of Serbian beer are growing strong in countries where there is a large diaspora such as Australia, Germany and Austria. In addition, due to the low production costs, Carlsberg’s Serbian base is seen as a good point for exporting products to neighboring countries such as Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria.
Commenting on the recently-announced tax hike for alcohol products, Bekefi pointed out that, when comparing the level of excise with purchasing power, Serbia has the largest or second largest taxes in Europe. This may cause beer to be somewhat more expensive, which ultimately could affect the consumption of beer next year.
In a related development, Andrej Beslac has been

Ukraine: Government doubles excise duty on beer

Despite protests from local industry players, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada has approved a bill raising excise rates on beer, hard spirits, wine, and sigarettes, zn.ua reported on December 24.
As from January 1, the tax on beer will be doubled – to UAH2.48 per litre, while rates for hard spirits will be raised by 50%.
Ukrainian brewers are already struggling. In January-November this year, the nation’s beer output declined by 20.2% versus the same period last year. In 2008-2015, Ukraine’s beer industry shrank by almost 40%, experts estimate.

UK: Diageo produces record 12.5 mln cases of beer at Belfast facility
|
Drinks firm Diageo has produced 12.5 million cases of beer at its canning and bottling facility in east Belfast in what it said was a new record for the facility, The Irish News reported on December 30.
The plant on Marshall's Road employs 136 people and has undergone an improvement programme over the past 18 months.
It has been in operation for more than three decades.
Around 60 per cent of beer produced is sold in Ireland with the remainder exported to markets in Europe, North America and Asia.
Running at full capacity, the site can produce two million cans and bottles of beer in one day.
That follows a series of upgrades over the last decade including a can filler with widget inserter technology for cans of Draught Guinness, providing the capability to produce 60,000 cans per hour.
The facility's production manager Gary Simpson said: “All of our people at Belfast Packaging are proud to be setting production records and playing such an important role in supplying our home and international markets with Diageo’s great range of beers, including Guinness, Harp and Smithwick’s.
"The ‘Manufacturing Excellence' programme of continuous performance improvement will ensure that our site in east Belfast is ready and able to meet increased
