Brewery news UK: Survey shows love for fizzy lager is falling in the UK
Britain's love for fizzy lager is falling as a frothy ale in a pint jug becomes more popular, Western Daily Press reported on January 14 a new survey.

For the first time in generations just under half of Brits drank lager last year as sales have fallen year on year.

And the numbers opting to sup from a jug is on the rise.

While the nation may still has downed 5.54 billion pints of lager last year, the number of pints of ales and bitter increased to 1.6 bln.

Today more than one quarter drink ale or bitter, whilst one in five drink any type of craft beer.

And in which glass the beer is served in is also changing as the pint jug or tankard once seen as a relic from the 1970s makes a comeback.

The top choice of glass preferred to sup from in a pub is the nonic or a straight glass with a bulge near the head with over a quarter of drinkers.

The tulip which has a narrow base and wider mouth is next followed by the tankard with both popular with a sixth.

The jug was often seen as an old man's vessel but ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Antitrust authorities begin in-depth investigation of AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
U.S. antitrust officials began an in-depth investigation of Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s planned takeover of SABMiller Plc, seeking additional information related to the deal, Bloomberg reported on January 14.

The Justice Department’s antitrust division recently issued a so-called second request to the beer maker, according to the company. The inquiry, a move by the Justice Department that was expected by the companies, lengthens the review of how the combination will affect competition and prices for beer.

“As expected with a transaction of this nature, we received a second request for information from the DOJ,” said Marianne Amssoms, a spokeswoman for AB InBev. “We continue to work closely with DOJ to provide them additional information.”

The Justice Department is among competition authorities across the world who must sign off on the $110 billion takeover that combines the world’s biggest brewers. The enlarged company would account for about half the industry’s profit and almost a third of all beer sold worldwide. To resolve antitrust concerns in the U.S., AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser, has agreed to sell SABMiller’s 58 percent stake in MillerCoors to joint-venture partner Molson Coors Brewing Co. By selling that stake, AB InBev says the merger won’t harm competition in the U.S. because ...More info on site

Brewery news South Sudan: SABMiller to close brewing operations in South Sudan by mid-February
SABMiller Plc will close its brewing operations in South Sudan, the only beer factory in the world’s youngest country, by mid-February as a foreign-currency shortage curtails its ability to import raw materials, Bloomberg reported on January 14.

The company will cut as many as 176 jobs by the end of March, said Carlos Gomes, the managing director of South Sudan Beverages Ltd. The brewer has failed to make a profit in the war-torn country since setting up the nation’s first brewery in 2009, he said in an interview in October.

South Sudan devalued its currency by 84 percent last month in favor of a floating regime when it adopted the parallel market’s rate of 18.5 pounds per dollar from a previous fixed rate of 2.96.

“We have for many months not had access to any significant amount of forex,” Gomes said in response to e-mailed questions. “We had large South Sudan pound deposits in the bank at the time the devaluation was announced. The end result is that we incurred a loss of tens of millions of dollars, placing SSBL in an even worse position than it was.”

SABMiller, which is being acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s biggest brewer, began producing brands including ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Three major brewers reveal wholesale beer price rises for 2016
Three major UK brewers have revealed their wholesale beer price rises for 2016 in a move likely to anger many licensees, MorningAdvertiser reported on January 14.

Molson Coors will raise the wholesale selling price on the majority of its draught products by approximately 3.5p per pint and Heineken by an average of 2% or 2.5p. Diageo will increase the price of a 50L keg of Guinness by 4% from the end of this month.

However, Greene King confirmed that it would freeze prices for the third year running on its own brewed products as part of an ongoing campaign to support the trade.

Several leading operators have hit out against beer price hikes, arguing they are unnecessary as inflation is low and ingredients and delivery costs are falling.

However, representatives from Molson Coors, Diageo and Heineken said that a need for investment was behind the higher prices and stressed that the increase had been kept to the ‘minimum level’.

A Heineken spokesperson said the average increase was down on last year’s average of 4%, adding: “We always seek to absorb as much as we can before passing on increases to our trade customers. Our increase also reflects the very comprehensive investment programme we continue to ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev starts trading on Johannesburg Stock Exchange
The world’s biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, began trading on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on January 15, the latest in a string of multinational heavyweights to complete a secondary listing in South Africa, strengthening the local bourse even as the broader economy continues to decelerate, the Wall Street Journal reported.

AB InBev began trading at 1,938 South African rand ($118) a share—giving it a market value of 3.1 trillion rand ($188 billion)—or nearly double the value of British American Tobacco PLC, until January 15 the biggest company on the JSE. Mega-brewer AB InBev’s listing is the most recent step in its more than $100 billion quest to acquire SABMiller PLC, which has its ancestral home in South Africa.

SABMiller is now the exchange’s third-largest company by market capitalization, and local investors had expressed concerns that an acquisition by AB InBev could mean losing access to a major beer company and leaving them with fewer options for tapping global growth through the JSE. The secondary listing is AB InBev’s solution to that problem.

South African regulators allow pension funds to invest just a quarter of their assets offshore. The remaining three-quarters have to be invested in South African-listed companies, a designation for which AB ...More info on site

Brewery news USA & Brazil: Ambev starts to distribute Craft Brew Alliance’s Hawaiian beers in Brazil
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. (“CBA”), a leading US craft brewing company, announced on January 13 it is partnering with Ambev, the Brazilian subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA, to expand distribution of Kona Brewing Co. beers to Brazil. Ambev began distributing Kona’s award-winning Longboard Island Lager and Big Wave Golden Ale in Brazil in December 2015.

While Brazil is the third largest beer market in the world, both CBA and Ambev see a significant opportunity in tapping into the country’s fast-growing craft beer segment. As Brazil’s leading beverage company, Ambev is uniquely positioned to meet the increasing demand from Brazilian beer drinkers for the distinctive and authentic flavors of American craft beer. Kona Brewing Co. is a top 10 US craft beer brand and the first Hawaiian craft beer distributed in Brazil.

“We’re excited to continue building on our long-standing partnership with AB InBev through forging this pioneering new relationship with Ambev,” said Andy Thomas, Chief Executive Officer, Craft Brew Alliance. “We think the opportunity for Kona in Brazil is massive, especially with the great synergies between Hawaiian and Brazilian culture, with their amazing beaches and strong water lifestyles. This partnership brings together Ambev’s beer expertise with an internationally loved craft beer and ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: New malting barley varieties begin to gain traction among brewers and foreign buyers
A handful of newer malting barley varieties are beginning to gain traction among brewers and foreign buyers of Canadian malt and malting barley, Western Producer reported on January 14.

But as usual, acceptance is slow and it will take time to develop stable, established markets.

For the next two or three years at least, established standbys such as Metcalfe and Copeland will likely remain the most widely produced malting barley varieties in Western Canada.

Peter Watts, executive director of the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre, said foreign interest in newer varieties such as Synergy and Kindersley is building.

“Synergy is one variety that’s on a lot of people’s lips,” said Watts.

“It look like it’s quite well suited for both the adjunct brewing and the craft brewing markets, so it looks very versatile. Kindersley is another one that has some potential.”

Watts told a Jan. 12 CropSphere meeting that exports of Synergy would be greater if more was grown in Canada.

Promotion of newer malting barley varieties is a high priority at the barley research centre.

Newer varieties with superior yield potential, disease resistance packages, agronomic characteristics and brewing attributes have been registered in Canada, but the task of promoting them to large-scale breweries continues to be a ...More info on site
