USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance says net sales increased 2%, shipments fell 1% last year
|
Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) has announced preliminary 2015 earnings results, highlighting a net sales increase of just 2 percent over the year prior. Total shipments declined 1 percent in 2015, the company said.
Net sales grew 4 percent in the fourth quarter, up $1.8 million, according to a statement. Total depletions, meanwhile, declined about 1 percent despite gains from a Kona line that was up 27 percent in the quarter.
Year-to-date gains for the Kona, Omission and Square Mile Cider lines were offset by declines from the Wimder, Redhook and Resignation brands, contributing to an overall flat depletion performance, the company said.
Nevertheless, the company managed to grow gross margins by 110 basis points on the year, to 30.5 percent.
“Our preliminary results for 2015 reflect strong momentum in the second half of the year, underscoring continued forward progress despite an increasingly competitive and fast-changing market,” CEO Andy Thomas said via a press release. “Our ability to remain focused and deliver increased gross profit, robust gross margin expansion, and a sixth consecutive year of double-digit growth for Kona are nothing short of remarkable in today’s challenging climate.”

Canada, ON: Together We're Bitter Brewery finally opening near downtown Kitchener
|
It has been a long two years, but the collaborating team behind the brewery Together We're Bitter is excited to finally be opening near downtown Kitchener, CBC.ca reported on February 3.
"It has been forever," Culum Canally, one of six co-owners of TWB, said in an interview with CBC News.
In September, they found a 1,500 sq. ft. building to turn into the brewery, the former Eco Coffee Roaster building at 300 Mill Street. In January, they had all their licenses in place.
But they are waiting until Feb. 10 to open to ensure they have enough beer in the tanks, Canally said. They are very aware of embarrassing stories involving other local breweries that opened but then sold out within days, forcing them to close until they had more beer available.
Canally said they wanted to avoid that and, he said, their supporters seem willing to wait a few more days to ensure stability.
From finding co-owners in the co-operative brewery, to a crowdfunding campaign to buy a fermenter, to shifting the planned opening day, Canally said people who were excited when the brewery was first announced two years ago have continued to support their journey.
"We've been pleasantly surprised that our community that's

USA, AZ: Tucson’s Ten Fifty-Five Brewing seeks investors
|
Tucson micro- and craft-brewing company Ten Fifty-Five opened a call for investors on February 2, just ahead of its third birthday, Arizona Daily Star reported.
“It’s been a wild ride for sure. We had happily underestimated Tucson’s demand for craft beer,” said co-founder and owner Chris Squires.
The current location, 3810 E. 44th St., is in an industrial area near South Dodge Boulevard. Beer production and a tap room are nestled into the 1,800- square-foot space, just down the road from another Tucson beer icon, Nimbus Brewing Co.
“It’s kind of funny, when we opened the space where we are now, we did not account for much sales on premise in our tap rooms,” Squires said.
“We didn’t think people would be able to find us, much less want to. But within six months we had to knock out a wall and expand into the space next door.”
The expansion continues as Ten Fifty-Five plans to open an 11,000-square-foot facility at 127 S. Fourth Ave., hoping to increase production five to six times.
The space will include brewing and seating, food service and an outdoor patio with picnic tables and areas for games like bocci ball, Squires said.
However, it is all in the very preliminary stages,

USA, IA: Backpocket Brewing Company to open second location in Cedar Rapids
|
Coralville-based Backpocket Brewing Company is planning to open a second location in downtown Cedar Rapids, The Gazette reported on February 4.
Plans call for Backpocket Pilot Pub to open this summer at 415 Third St. SE. The building, built in 1908, previously housed Sokol Gymnasium, and the gymnasium space will be used for the 4,500 square-foot brewery and restaurant area.
The Pilot Pub will offer a more extensive menu than the Coralville location and will have smaller brewing tanks, which will allow brewers to focus on small batch experimental beers.
Developer Charles Jones is working with the brewery on a renovation of the building, which is currently under construction. Jones did not immediately return a call for comment on February 4, but The Gazette has previously reported he planned to invest at least $2.5 million in the space and in return will receive a property tax break projected to equal $300,000 over 10 years.
Along with the brewpub, Jones’ plans called for shops, a rooftop lounge and four high-end apartments.
Backpocket Brewing opened in Coralville’s Iowa River Landing in 2012. The brewer previously operated as Old Man River Brewing Company in McGregor.

USA, FL: Brew Bus acquires Florida Avenue Brewing
|
Brew Bus, a Tampa-based brewery tour operator, today announced its purchase of Florida Avenue Brewing for an undisclosed sum, Brewbound reported on February 3.
First revealed last December, the deal includes the Florida Avenue brewery and tasting room in Seminole Heights, a space Brew Bus is spending about $250,000 to renovate. Upon completion, the location will also serve as a base camp for Brew Bus brewery tours in Tampa.
Brew Bus — which also makes its own line of beers under contact with Lakeland, Fla.-based Brew Hub — plans to expand availability of the Florida Avenue brands, including Florida Avenue Ale and Florida Avenue IPA, with the help of Brew Hub until the Seminole Heights facility opens in March.
Once open, Brew Bus will also begin producing a variety of its own labels, as well as those from Florida Avenue, at the renovated facility.
“The renovated brewery will allow Brew Bus to brew both the Brew Bus and Florida Avenue brands under one roof,” a statement read. “A rebrand including new logos, can designs and recipes for Florida Avenue is planned for the third quarter of 2016.”
In an interview with Brewbound, Anthony Derby, owner and co-founder of Brew Bus, said he also plans to

Ireland: Spring barley yields increase constantly over the past 10 years
|
Spring barley yields have increased constantly over the past 10 years, according to Teagasc’s Tillage Advisor Ciaran Hickey, AgriLand reported on February 4.
Speaking at the Spring Tillage Seminar in Co. Wexford recently, he said barley growers should consider variety choice carefully before sowing a crop which may not suit their system.
Hickey also discussed the traits of malting barley varieties growers can sow this spring from the Department of Agriculture’s recommend lists.
Both KWS Irina and Propino are on the recommended list for 2016, he said, and barley growers are pretty used to growing these varieties at this stage.
However, Hickey said that Propino has a small chink in its armour, as the enzyme which keeps the skin on the grain is very weak.
Some malting growers may also have the opportunity to grow Sienna, he said, and it has an excellent kilogrammes per hectolitre (KPH) of 69.7, brilliant grain quality and very strong straw.
Hickey said that this variety is a non-glysodic nitrile variety, which means that it is suitable for distilling.
However, he said that it must be watched in high fertility soils as the Department’s trial in 2014 showed that it quite prone to lodging in very high nitrogen sites.
Some malting growers will
