LUPULIN GLANDS IN FULL BEAUTY
ABSTRACT
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a powerful
way to see exact details in a nano or micro scale. This
work used SEM to assess lupulin glands from different
hop varieties. These pictures show the changes and
development of lupulin gland during the growing season.
For each hop variety, 50 micrographs were visually
assessed and compared based on lupulin surface
topography, degree of fullness, and volume. The gland
features were correlated and clustered against the
chemical properties of the corresponding variety. The
cluster data confirmed there are larger gland volumes in
the bittering hop varieties independent of the country
of origin. In further research it would be valuable to
investigate the same hop variety grown in different
countries and to determine the effect of environmental
and handling conditions on the structural features of the
lupulin glands.

USA: Some malting barley growers still waiting for contracts to be released by maltsters
|
What a difference a year can make in the malting barley market.
Last year at this time, maltsters were making plans for sweeping out the corners of the grain bins as the supply of malting barley appeared to be razor thin. But after an exceptionally good year of production in 2015, the market is awash in malting barley and some maltsters appear to be in no hurry to extend contracts to growers for the 2016 crop, Farm and Ranch Guide reported on February 5.
“The contracts are coming out, slowly but surely. Some have been issued by some companies and some haven’t been issued,” commented Marv Zutz, executive director of the Minnesota Barley Growers Association. “Last year the contracts were issued early and at a strong price due to the shortage of barley. This year, because of the surplus of barley from our above average yields last year and the high acceptance rate, not as much barley is needed for the current production year.”
This year due to the lower competition for barley acres to supply the maltsters’ needs, there will be a reduction in acres contracted and some maltsters are currently in a wait and see attitude as they wait to see

USA, VA: Triple Crossing Brewing Co. purchases new building for expanding in Richmond’s East End
|
Another local craft brewery is planning to increase its presence in the Richmond area, Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on February 8.
Triple Crossing Brewing Co. said on February 8 that it plans to expand its brewing and beer-tasting operations to a site in Richmond’s East End.
The company has purchased a 30,000-square-foot building at 5203 Hatcher St. in the Fulton Hill neighborhood.
Co-owner Adam Worcester said the new location is expected to open this year or in early 2017 and will allow the brewery to “grow our production output while providing a unique tasting room and outdoor experience.”
Triple Crossing opened in April 2014 with a small brewing operation and tasting room at 113 Foushee St., near Virginia Commonwealth University.
That space will remain open, Worcester said.
“It is a great spot,” he said. “We have built up a great fan base there. We do all of the brewing on site. We are hand-bottling everything.”
The business needed a bigger location to do enough brewing to distribute its brands to retail locations.
“We always had plans to be able to distribute more product to the market both in cans and bottles,” said Worcester, who co-owns the brewery with Scott Jones and head brewer Jeremy Wirtes, who is currently the

USA, FL: Cigar City Brewing rumoured to be the next craft brewery to be acquired by AB InBev
|
Cigar City Brewing of Tampa, Florida may be the next craft brewery to be acquired by AB InBev, TheFullPint.com reported on February 9 citing three independent, unnamed sources within the industry close to the situation.
Cigar City Brewing owner Joey Redner, who is often asked this question, declined to give a public statement.
This rumor has come and gone since Cigar City Brewing opened their doors in 2009. Not too long ago, Cigar City responded to the ongoing rumors informing the public that they have, and always will entertain a meeting that sheds light on their breweries market value. Similarly, New Belgium Brewing was in the middle of a sale rumors, where they responded that they are obligated to seek company valuation, and this is one approach to doing so.

Canada, ON: Shawn & Ed Brewing Company finally starts production
|
Production at the Shawn & Ed Brewing Company in Dundas, Ontario kicked off this week with the first run of the company's LagerShed Original. The beer is now quietly aging in oaken barrels for a month before it's ready for the market. It takes four weeks for a lager to properly age and two weeks for an ale, The Hamilton Spectator reported on February 5.
For co-owner Ed Madronich the final start of production caps an eventful year of getting the business ready to launch.
"It has been exciting and stressful all at the same time," he said on February 5. "Now we're getting the product ready for sale."
The Shawn and Ed Brewing Company, named for partners Madronich and Shawn Till, has been fermenting for most of a year while the entrepreneurs oversaw renovations of the former curling club and warehouse and got their brewing equipment set up and running.
"We've done everything as well as we can and I've very proud of that," Madronich said. "We preserved this building and we've bought the best equipment to brew beer we could find anywhere.
"We did it all very well right from the beginning," he added.
The project was delayed by city issues including a holding

USA, AL: Bluewater Brewing Company the newest craft brewery to enter Alabama beer scene
|
Bluewater Brewing Company is the newest craft brewery to open its doors in Alabama. The brewery is located in Florence, Alabama and begins distribution this week. Bluewater has partnered with Alabama’s premier craft distributor, AlaBev, to ensure its product is served to prime locations in Florence and north Alabama, Brewbound reported on February 8.
“There is always a high level of anticipation and excitement when a new brewery opens,” stated Harry Kampakis, owner of AlaBev. “Alabama has become a haven for craft breweries and we are glad to see the market continue to expand throughout the state. Bluewater Brewing Company is a testament to the caliber of craft beers being brewed right here in Alabama.”
Arron Hannah and Patricia Wilkens founded the brewery with the goal of bringing quality craft beer to Florence and north Alabama. Hannah and Wilkens have a passion for craft beer they hope to share with their community. The newly released brew from Bluewater is a 6.2 percent ABV medium bodied American Brown Ale with notes of chocolate and caramel. The beer is hopped with Willamette hops that are prevalent, but not overbearing.
The first batch of draft beer from Bluewater is now available. It can be found in

USA, TX & OK: Rahr & Sons Brewing Co.’s craft beers coming to Oklahoma in March
|
One of the largest craft breweries in Texas is expanding to Oklahoma. Starting March 1, Rahr & Sons Brewing Co.’s craft beers will be available on store shelves and on tap at many restaurants and bars in Oklahoma, TheFullPint.com reported on February 9.
Beers to be initially released in Oklahoma will include: Rahr’s Blonde, a Munich-style Helles Lager and the brewery’s very first beer; Ugly Pug, a Schwarzbier Black Lager; Stormcloud, an English India Pale Ale; Buffalo Butt, an American Amber; and Iron Thistle, a seasonal Strong Scotch-style Ale. Other beers will be released seasonally throughout the year.
With a strong German background and almost 170 years of brewing tradition in his blood, owner Fritz Rahr opened Rahr & Sons more than a decade ago with his wife, Erin. Rahr said he and his team look forward to serving their neighbors up north.
To celebrate the expansion into Oklahoma, Rahr & Sons will host a number of beer dinners, pint nights and beer sampling events to introduce Oklahomans to their brand.

USA, OH: Rhinegeist Brewery triples production in 2015
|
Cincinnati’s Rhinegeist brewery tripled production to more than 31,000 barrels in just its second full year of business, Brewbound reported on February 8.
Rhinegeist, which only sells its beer in Ohio and Kentucky, is one of a growing number of well-capitalized and entrepreneurial-minded craft startups outpacing category growth by brewing dozens of different styles and overinvesting in sales personnel.
In a conversation with Brewbound, co-founder Bryant Goulding, who served in sales management roles for Golden Road Brewing and Dogfish Head before leaving to start Rhinegeist with business partner Bob Bonder in 2012, described his company’s growth in 2015 as “heroic.”
“We were loosely pushing for 30,000 barrels,” he said. “We learned a lot about how quickly we can grow.”
The company, now 120 employees strong, also self-distributed about 25,000 barrels in the Cincinnati, Dayton and Columbus markets, Goulding said — Rhinegeist now maintains a fleet of 12 sprinter vans, a box truck and a 54-foot-long trailer.
“Self-distribution has continued to be a foundational element in our growth,” Goulding wrote in an email. “We love the symbiosis and communication between sales and distribution teams.”
The remainder of Rhinegeist’s sales — which now includes the Cidergeist line of hard apple ciders, launched in October — were concentrated across

USA, AL & FL & TN: Good People Brewing Co. to enter new markets in Florida and Tennessee
|
Good People Brewing Co., the oldest and largest brewery in the state of Alabama, announced on February 5 that it will begin selling its selection of high-quality beers in two new markets in the coming month. Starting the week of Feb. 29, Good People will expand into the Florida Panhandle; the following week, on March 7, the brewery will expand into central Tennessee.
“We couldn’t be more excited to finally break this news,” said Michael Sellers, who cofounded Good People in 2008 with his friend Jason Malone. “Speaking as a small business owner, this is obviously a great opportunity to grow our company. It’s a milestone for everyone here. But speaking as an Alabamian, it’s also a chance to show more folks around the South the kind of quality and character that our state has to offer.”
Three years ago, in Feb. 2013, Good People expanded into Nashville, Tennessee. Building on the success of this first step into an out-of-state market—as well as invaluable hometown support—the brewery is prepared to meet the demand of devoted customers in the Panhandle and central Tennessee.
“Birmingham’s our home,” Sellers said. “With every new market we go to, we want to be ambassadors for the Magic City.

Hong Kong: San Miguel Brewery Hong Kong registers net loss of HK$16.9 mln last year
|
San Miguel Brewery Hong Kong, a unit of conglomerate San Miguel Corp., registered a consolidated net loss of HK$16.9 million in 2015, a turnaround from a profit of HK$37 million in 2014, on lower volume due to the non-renewal of distribution agreements with Anheuser-Busch, The Standard reported on February 7.
SMBHK said in a statement posted on its Web site the group’s consolidated revenues stood at HK$569.5 million, down 22 percent year-on-year.
“Overall sales volume of the company in the [Hong Kong] territory declined by 17 percent, mainly because of the slow demand in the on-premise sales channel partly due to lower tourist arrivals and the non-renewal of distribution agreements with Anheuser-Busch InBev China Sales Company Limited and Anheuser-Busch InBev International GmbH & Co KG in 2014, as disclosed in a profit warning announcement last 25 January 2016,” SMBHK said.
Also contributing to the net loss were operating costs associated with the sales and marketing operations of the affected products, which were redirected and reinvested in the development of new, premium, specialty and craft brands.
The company said it signed up and develop a new stable of premium, specialty and craft brands in line with the company’s key business strategy of sustaining a broad

Zimbabwe: Delta Beverages to build two new plants for brewing its Chibuku Super brand
|
Zimbabwe’s leading beverage manufacturer, Delta Beverages, has set aside $26 million dollars for the setting up of two additional Chibuku Super plants at its Kwekwe and Masvingo Breweries, the Chronicle reported on February 8.
Delta already has invested extensively in two plants at its Chitungwiza and Fairbridge Breweries in Bulawayo which have a combined capacity of producing 2.2 million litres of the Chibuku Super brand a month.
The local listed entity is in the process of expanding the Fairbridge Brewery which will see capacity increasing to 2.4 million litres by March.
Delta Beverages corporate affairs manager, Tsungai Manyeza said surging demand for Chibuku Super brand has necessitated the setting up of the new plants.
He said: “The company has capacity to supply 2.2 million litres of Chibuku Super in the 1.25 litre pack from the two factories at Chitungwiza and Fairbridge.
“This is expected to increase to 2.4 million litres when additional brewing tanks are installed at Fairbridge by March 2016.
“While the Kwekwe Brewery will be closed temporarily from February 2016, the Masvingo unit will remain open during the rebuilding exercise.
“It may close for a short while later in the year to allow for plant integration.

India: Strong beer helping Carlsberg ride out sluggish sales
|
Strong beer is helping Carlsberg ride out of sluggish beer sales in India. At a time when the overall Indian beer market is growing at about 5% a year, robust sales of brands like Tuborg and Elephant have helped the Danish brewer double its local business every two years, Brand Equity reported on February 9.
Unlike most other markets, where Carlsberg's top seller is the milder version of the eponymous lager, the company's Indian unit has been focusing on brands such as Tuborg Strong and Elephant because strong beer accounts for 80% of country's overall sales volume of 300 million cases.
"The growth can be attributed to the long-term strategy to focus on key markets, especially cities, focused brand portfolio, expanding manufacturing footprint, increased product availability and above all a strong team," said Michael Jensen, managing director, Carlsberg India, which reported a 54% increase in sales at . Rs 765 crore during FY15 with net loss of Rs 232 crore.
However, despite the healthy sales numbers, innovations and aggressive product launches, Carlsberg's market share in India the world's third fastest growing beer market is one of its lowest globally. Tuborg, which was launched in the country as a premium brand in 2009, has

World: Coca-Cola seen as next possible takeover target for AB InBev
|
Analysts at Susquehanna upgraded their rating on Coca-Cola to neutral from negative, saying the company could be a takeover target if Anheuser-Busch InBev decides to move into soft drinks after its pending merger with SABMiller, St. Louis Business Journal reported on February 8.
The analysts also say Coca-Cola's profitability could be improved through better pricing in the U.S. and refranchising initiatives. Coca-Cola could improve with its own mergers and acquisitions, the analysts said, suggesting WhiteWave Foods as a target, Barrons reports.
Coca-Cola Co. shares closed nearly flat on February 5, down less than half a percent at $42.44; AB InBev shares closed down 3 percent on the same day at $118.30.
AB InBev's pending $108 billion acquisition of rival brewer SABMiller recently received clearance from regulators in India. The companies also need to win regulatory approvals in China, Australia, the U.S., the European Union, South Africa and Colombia.
