GENOMIC STUDIES IN HOPS
ABSTRACT
Breeding hop varieties for higher yield, disease
resistance and improved brewing characteristics is a
lengthy and expensive process. Use of new genomic
tools enables greater precision in selection as well
as reduced dependence upon lengthy phenotypic
evaluations. This research group performed genomic
studies in hops that looked at multiple quantitative
traits to identify potential molecular markers for use
in selection. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies
focused upon the identification of SNP markers linked
to downy mildew resistance. Genome-wide association
studies (GWAS) looked for markers linked to yield,
alpha and beta acid levels, cohumulone levels, hop
storageability, oil amounts, and levels of caryophyllene,
limonene, humulene and myrcene. They were successful
in identifying a total of 98 SNP markers as significantly
associated with one of the 10 traits. An additional
outcome of this study was the identification of a set of
7 SNPs that effectively differentiated all 116 varieties.

USA: The Boston Beer Company reports fourth-quarter and full year 2015 results
|
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. reported on February 18 fourth quarter 2015 net revenue of $215.1 million, a decrease of $2.7 million or 1% from the same period last year, mainly due to a decline in core shipments of 3%, partially offset by price increases.
Net income for the fourth quarter was $16.1 million, or $1.21 per diluted share, a decrease of $3.0 million or $0.19 per diluted share from the fourth quarter of 2014. This decrease was primarily due to the decrease in net revenue and increases in advertising, promotional and selling expenses that were only partially offset by increased gross margin.
Earnings per diluted share for the 52-week period ended December 26, 2015 were $7.25, an increase of $0.56, or 8%, from the comparable 52-week period in 2014. Net revenue for the 52-week period ended December 26, 2015 was $959.9 million, an increase of $56.9 million, or 6%, from the comparable 52-week period in 2014.
Martin Roper, the Company's President and CEO stated, "In the fourth quarter, our depletions declined due to decreases in our Samuel Adams and Angry Orchard brands that were only partially offset by increases in our Coney Island, Twisted Tea and Traveler brands.

USA, IL: DESTIHL® Brewery to build production facility in Normal, Illinois
|
DESTIHL® Brewery announced on February 18 plans to build a new $14 million production brewery facility in Normal, Illinois.
The brewery complex, to be located on Greenbriar Road in the North-Land Commercial Subdivision (north of Menards®), will initially consist of a 47,000 sq. ft. production brewery facility situated on about 6 acres of land. The building will house a large production space, including an expanded brewhouse, fermentation and cellar areas, a two-story oak barrel and foudre room for beer aging, a packaging floor, cooler, warehouse and lab. The facility will also include a 6,300 sq. ft. taproom and event space, featuring the bold flavors of DESTIHL’s beer and food, an outdoor beer garden and brewery and corporate offices. The brewery has an option to purchase adjacent land for future expansion as well, which would likely involve a similar size of investment over time.
The planned expansion is being driven by heavy demand for DESTIHL’s unique portfolio of beers, both locally in Illinois and in the other 13 states where its beers are currently distributed as well as in many other markets presently wait-listed by the brewery for over a year. Since starting production less than three years ago in May

USA, FL: Big Storm Brewing Co. to launch in Clearwater on February 20
|
Big Storm Brewing Co. announced on February 18 the official ribbon cutting and the grand opening of their new 16,000 square foot brewing facility and taproom in Clearwater. With more than 12 varieties of handcrafted local beers and 6 exclusive wines on tap, Big Storm Brewing Co.’s 49th street location is offering the community something that everyone can enjoy.
Started in 2012 in Odessa, Florida, Big Storm Brewing Co. was created to fill a void in the local craft beer market – artisanal and complex brews that cater to both craft beer enthusiasts, and regular beer drinkers alike. “With the popularity of Big Storm growing statewide, we simply needed a facility that could handle the consumer demand,” states Mike Bishop, Founder and CEO of Big Storm Brewing Co. “This new manufacturing facility will predominantly focus on brewing, canning and packaging our core brands Arcus IPA, Wavemaker Amber Ale and Helicity Pilsner,” Bishop continued.
The 16,000 square foot vacant warehouse, was designed and built by Systems Design Engineering, Inc. (SDE) out of Leesport Pennsylvania, who hired all local contractors to perform the construction. SDE is widely known for building the 100,000 square foot D.G. Yuengling facility in Pottsville, PA.

USA, GA: Riverwatch Brewery receives state license
|
The whole process of building a brewery from scratch just won’t seem real until she sees Augusta watering holes with Riverwatch Brewery taps behind the bar, brew master Brey Sloan said in an interview to The Augusta Chronicle on February 18.
On February 16, that dream became a little closer to reality as the brewery – likely to be the first in the city in more than a century – received its state license from the Georgia Department of Revenue, allowing it to sell alcoholic beverages.
It was the last in a series of three licenses required to open, but don’t head down to the Farmer Market on Laney-Walker Boulevard just yet; Sloan said it should still take about three weeks for her first brews to hit local taps.
She’s already conducted a “water brew” to test the efficiency of the system and still has to pass an inspection by the fire marshal and the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
“Oh, I’ve still got all sorts of things to be nervous about still,” she said with a laugh.
According to the brewery’s newly launched Web site, its initial offering will consist of four different styles of beer: Cautionary Tale IPA, Scenic Overlook Blond, 104 Pale Ale

USA, OK: Change in Oklahoma beer laws may force AB InBev out of the state
|
A provision to a bill looking to change Oklahoma's beer laws could force Anheuser-Busch out of the state, Kswo.com reported on February 18.
State legislators are currently discussing a bill that would allow the sale of wine and high point beer in Oklahoma grocery stores and gas stations. The bill would also not allow distribution centers to be owned by manufacturers, essentially forcing Anheuser-Busch to sell their distribution centers in Lawton, Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
The Lawton Anheuser-Busch distributor wasn’t available for comment, but executives at Anheuser-Busch say if the bill passes, it would affect about 700 people statewide.
In a phone interview after meetings at the Oklahoma Capitol, Eric James, the senior director of marketing and sales for Anheuser-Busch sales of Oklahoma, says he believes the provision is targeting Anheuser-Busch.
"The way the language is written now, it specifically impacts us. At this time, there are no other business entities that would be essentially legislated out of business in the state," James said.
James says if the provision stays on the bill, the company would be forced to sell their distributors in the next five years, leaving the fate of the employees, including those in Lawton, in the hands of someone else.
"Anytime there's a

USA, IA: Wing Nutt Brewery planning to open taproom in Altoona
|
The city of Altoona is about to get a little nutty with the Wing Nutt Brewery planning to open a taproom in the city, The Des Moines Register reported on February 18.
Construction has begun on Altoona’s first brewery at 480 Center Place in Altoona, with plans to open as soon as this spring.
The idea of Wing Nutt was formed in August 2014 when Art Schramm, Andrew Frana and Molly Frana got together after Andrew and Schramm met at an Iowa Home Brewers Union meeting.
“One of us said we should have a brewery in Altoona and that is kind of how the whole thing started,” Schramm said.
“We talked about it half-jokingly and then every time we talked about it we got more serious,” Andrew said.
At the time Schramm was unaware that Andrew’s wife, Molly, also brewed. Now she is the head brewer of the Wing Nutt Brewery.
Molly’s background is in food science and she currently works with quality assurance.
“When Andrew and I met we decided to both start brewing together about six years ago,” Molly said.
Molly said that the brewing community has been really accepting and supportive of her and the Wing Nutt Brewery.
The trio started out by home brewing some

Jamaica: Red Stripe to repatriate production of its namesake beer destined for the US by September
|
Red Stripe's plan to repatriate beer produced in the United States to Jamaica is projected to boost domestic production by 30 per cent, Jamaica Gleaner reported on February 19.
The move is also expected to add just shy of 200 direct jobs, half of which are destined for the local brewer's cassava farms, and provide employment for an additional 3,000 indirect workers for outsourced cassava production.
When the company relocated the production of up to 3.5 million cases (approximately 280,000 hectolitres) of beer destined for the United States to the North American market in 2012, it cut more than 70 jobs.
By September, it will bring back that production to Kingston, including the canning of beer destined for the US and Canada. Bottled beers sold in Canada will continue to be produced in that North American market.
The increased employment should boost the Government's tax revenue by some J$80 million based on just the 133 full-time positions to be created. Red Stripe should be able to credit the statutory deductions component about J$30 million through the employment tax credit provision of new tax legislation.
Still, this hardly dents the J$550-million income tax the beer maker pays on average each year, or the over J$2.5 billion

The Czech Republic & Russia: Czech brewers see exports to Russia fall due to the financial crisis
|
A Russian fashion for imported beers meant a boon for Czech breweries a few years back. However, the economic crisis of the last two years and restrictions on marketing have led to a marked fall in exports of Czech lager to the world’s biggest country, the daily Hospodářské noviny reported.
In 2014, 10.2 percent of Czech beer exports went to Russia, making it the third biggest export market for brewers in this part of the world. Last year that share fell to 5.5 percent, with the Russians placing fifth among importers.
The fall in the price of oil and international sanctions caused the collapse of the rouble in the second half of 2014.
The financial crisis that has followed has forced Russians to tighten their belts and many beer drinkers have switched to cheaper, locally produced brands.
A representative of Budějovický Budvar, Jiří Pekhart, told Hospodářské noviny that its sales in Russia had fallen by almost half last year. Fellow Czech brewer Bernard reported a similar situation.
The three biggest Czech firms on the market, Plzeňský Prazdroj, Staropramen and Krušovice, all of which have brewing facilities in the country, have also seen declines.
Indeed, data from the Czech Statistics Office and the customs authority shows that

Japan: Kirin Brewery considering exporting its Fujisanroku whisky
|
Kirin Brewery Co. is considering exporting its mainstay Fujisanroku (Foot of Mt. Fuji) whisky, possibly from this year, a company official said on February 17.
The move, aimed at enhancing the Tokyo-based company's brand power overseas, comes as whisky has become increasingly popular at home and abroad.
It would be the first whisky export for the Japanese company and follow similar moves by rival Japanese producers.
Demand for Japanese whisky is "growing stronger in Europe as it has begun winning awards at international competitions," said Toshihiro Tanaka, head of Kirin's marketing department.
But the level of Fujisanroku exports will depend on demand at home and abroad given the shortage of its base liquor, according to the company.
