Italy: Craft beer sector booming in Italy with 1,000 craft beer establishments registered at the end of last year
|
Craft beer consumption in Italy has tripled since 2012, reaching 17.5 million hectolitres in 2014, according to figures published by the Brewers Union (Unionbirrai).
This equals to a per capita consumption of 30 litres per year, compared with a European average of 80 litres. Overall, consumption of craft beers in Italy is now equal to 3 per cent of total beer consumption.
At the end of 2015, there were 1,000 craft beer establishments, including microbreweries, beer firms and brewpubs, compared to 872 in 2014.
Microbreweries (540 are currently registered, of which 494 fully active) are direct production plants, while beer firms (260) are structures that do not have their own factories, but that produce craft beer at third-party plants.
New technologies are also giving a boost to the sector, with business incubator Digital Magics launching WeBeers, an e-commerce platform that enables fans to buy their favourite beers with discounts and 48-hour delivery.
In addition, the service offers tips and advice on how to enjoy the beers proposed on the portal, as well as news from the Italian brewers.
However, high taxes remain the main challenge for the sector. According to the union, from January 2003 to January 2015, excise taxes grew by 117 per cent, one

India: United Breweries commences supply of beer from Rajasthan brewery acquired in 2014
|
United Breweries (UBL) has commenced supply of beer from a brewery in Rajasthan it acquired in 2014, profit.ndtv.com reported on February 27.
In a BSE filing, United Breweries said it has commenced "supplies of beer upon commissioning of the company's brewery located at Shahjahanpur, Rajasthan".
In September 2014, UBL had acquired brewery assets of Pacific Spirits Pvt Ltd for Rs 105 crore.
The deal involved acquisitions of assets such as land, building and plant/equipment of Pacific Spirits with its brewery at Shahjahanpur in Alwar, Rajasthan.
At the time of the deal, UBL had said: "The company will be able to expand its production capacity in Rajasthan to cater to the expected further growth in the market... The company will further invest to make the brewery operational before the coming season. This acquisition will also create additional employment opportunities in the vicinity upon the brewery becoming operational."
Earlier this week, UBL promoter Mallya resigned as chairman of United Spirits.
Mallya's exit from the board of United Spirits ended a long-drawn tussle between him and the majority owner, UK's Diageo, following allegations of irregularities on loans given to UB Group companies.

UK: Heineken launching tequila-flavoured beer Desperados on draft
|
Heineken has announced a new Wild Blueberry and Lime flavour of its Bulmers cider and revealed tequila-flavoured beer Desperados will be available on draft for the first time, The Morning Advertiser reported on March 1.
Desperados is the UK’s fourth biggest packaged lager brand and is targeted at a twenty-something audience.
A new ‘schooner-style’ glass is being introduced to support the launch on draught which, at two thirds the size of a pint, aims to help operators to boost their profit margins. The launch is further supported with branded bar runners and a striking illuminated steel font, which helps create strong standout at the bar.
Andrew Turner, category and trade marketing director at Heineken, said: “With the popularity of flavoured beers continuing to rise alongside consumer demand for a more premium drinking experience, we’re delighted to be launching Desperados on draught.
“With this new format, we are aiming to give our customers the opportunity to provide a wider choice to pub-goers, helping customers to grow their profit margins incrementally. The new font looks great and is certainly going to catch the eye of consumers on entering the bar, so we’re confident that this format will further increase the popularity of Desperados and help

UK: Molson Coors joins calls to cut beer duty
|
Calls to cut beer duty in the UK for a fourth time in a row have been backed by a major UK brewer, Burton Mail reported on March 2.
Bosses at Molson Coors have called on Chancellor George Osborne to slash the beer duty in the budget later this month.
Frederic Landtmeters, managing director UK and Ireland at Molson Coors, told the Mail that he wanted to see another cut take place.
He said: "The beer and pub industry plays a vital role in the UK economy, contributing £22 billion to the UK and supporting almost 900,000 jobs.
"Three successive beer duty cuts have provided our industry with a much-needed boost and we would urge the Government to continue supporting this important UK industry by further reducing beer duty.
"People can show their support for a pint by writing to their local MP and asking them to back beer duty cuts."
The potential cut has the backing of more than 50 MPs who have all signed a motion led by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) to cut the duty once again.
Currently, drinkers in Britain pay 52p in duty per pint in comparison to those in Germany where the duty is only 4p a pint.

UK: Pub bosses accusing big breweries of failing to pass on lower production costs to consumers
|
Bitter pub bosses are accusing big breweries of ripping off beer drinkers by failing to pass on lower production costs.
The bosses hit out as three giant brewers said ale and lager prices would rise, though ingredients and delivery are cheaper, the Sunday People reports.
They say Britain’s major beer firms have cynically put 10p on a pint while also demanding the Chancellor cut beer duty in next month’s Budget.
Meanwhile, the Campaign for Real Ale’s latest figures show an average of 27 pubs shut a week, hit by changes in drinking habits, supermarket competition and the smoking ban.
An open letter to George Osborne from eight pub operators complain of “unjustified” price hikes and say brewers have not passed on previous 1p a pint cuts in duty.
“You will have no doubt spotted the trick here,” it said. “Brewers impose increases every January and then ask the Government to reduce duty in March to mitigate the outcry.
“If they really cared about jobs in the sector – and if they really had any influence over it – they would be holding or reducing prices.
“Worse still, they’re not saving a single pub with their actions. None of the duty cuts are making their way into voters’

India: United Spirits to continue pursuing recovery of loans worth Rs 1,337 crore from United Breweries Holdings
|
Diageo-controlled United Spirits on Feburary 26 said it will continue to pursue recovery of loans worth Rs 1,337 crore from its erstwhile promoter group firm United Breweries Holdings (UB Holdings) through "dialogue or other legal means", dnaindia.com reported.
This move comes a day after embattled liquor baron and United Spirits's chairman Vijay Mallya resigned from the post and Diageo agreeing that Mallya will have no "personal liability" to the UK-based company in relation to the findings of alleged financial irregularities at the company that had triggered an acrimonious fight between them.
"We will continue to pursue all possible routes, dialogues or other legal means, to recover our dues. Through this agreement, it has been decided that the company will not go after Mallya personally but will do it with legal entities," United Spirits (USL) MD and CEO Anand Kripalu told analysts in a conference call.
Diageo on February 26 said that it has "agreed to pay $75 million (nearly Rs 515.48 crore) to Mallya in consideration for his resignation and termination of his appointment and governance rights and his relinquishing of the rights and benefits attached to his position as Chairman and Non-executive Director, among other factors".
When asked about the $75 million (nearly
