Brewery news Singapore: Demand for local craft beer not so strong yet
CRAFT Singapore, the city-state's first-ever craft beer festival, launches on March 4 in hopes of luring lager and ale guzzlers to more independent fare, SNCB reported.

The festival comes on the heels of a global boom in craft breweries, also referred to as microbreweries, that has seen larger players acknowledging the competition. Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer, announced purchases of three craft brewers in the month of December alone.

Microbreweries are broadly classified as small, independent operations producing limited volumes. In the U.S., annual production for an individual craft brewer is capped at 6 million barrels or less.

Singapore is home to around a dozen microbreweries, with four alone opening last year, Charles Guerrier, founder of CRAFT Singapore, told CNBC.

But the island nation's most popular beer—in term of total volume sales—still remains Tiger, made by Heineken-owned Asia-Pacific Breweries (APB), according to Euromonitor.

Indeed, craft accounts for only around 2 percent of Singapore's beer market share, noted Winston Kwang, owner of Beerstyle Distribution, a local company specializing in the import of American craft beers.

Industry observers highlighted a few factors behind the lower volumes.

"We're not yet at the stage where there's strong demand for local craft beer. Unlike the U.K., where people get very territorial ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Guinness Anchor Berhad concerned by hike in excise duties for beer and stout
Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB) expressed concern that a hike in excise duties for beer and stout may drive up demand for illicit alcohol, malaysiakini.com reported on March 2.

"We are also concerned that the demand for illicit and unregulated alcohol products may increase," GAB managing director Hans Essaadi said in a statement.

He also said the hike would make their business harder amid an economy that is already bearing down on businesses and consumers,

"The state of the economy is having a significant impact on businesses and consumers and the latest increase in excise duty on beer and stout will make the environment more challenging to our industry," Essaadi said.

GAB, he said, will make price adjustments to its products in line with the new tax structure.

The Malay Mail on March 2 reported that excise duties for beer and stout were expected to go up by 10 percent. The current rate is 10 percent.

Malaysia has the third highest tax on alcohol worldwide behind Norway and Singapore.

Brewery news Malawi: SABMiller’s Chibuku plant ordered to suspend production
A health inspection at the Lilongwe plant of SABMiller’s unit has prompted Malawi to suspend Chibuku beer production and operations by Chibuku Products Limited as the country intensifies a crackdown on products deemed unfit for human consumption, Independent Online reported on March 3.

Chibuku is an opaque beer product manufactured from sorghum by SABMiller in most of its African markets.

SABMiller recently developed a longer shelf variant of the product, giving it extra muscle in an African market where illegal and other traditional brews still have demand.

But in Malawi, hygienic concerns have forced the Malawi Bureau of Standards to shut down operations at Chibuku Products Limited, according to the standard board’s director-general.

Chibuku Products Limited is owned by Malawi Breweries, in which SABMiller has an interest. The Malawi Bureau of Standards said it had “with immediate effect suspended production and distribution of Chibuku shake-shake opaque beer for Lilongwe plant due to non-compliance with hygiene standard”.

Chibuku Products Limited was due to make a statement on the issue by the time of writing. However, Facebook users on the company’s page queried “how such a big company” like Chibuku had failed to meet hygiene standards.

The director-general of the standards body said the plant would be ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: COSATU vows to fight SABMiller takeover unless AB InBev guarantees no job will be lost
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has vowed to fight the pending merger between SABMiller PLC, Gutsche Family Investments and Coca-Cola unless a guarantee is made that no jobs would be lost, Iol.co.za reported on March 2.

The federation said it was worried about the potential devastating impact the merger would have on jobs, small businesses and the economy at large.

In its letter requesting to make presentations to the Competition Tribunal which is handling the proposed transaction, COSATU appealed with the entity and the Competition Commission to ensure that there was a binding contract protecting workers.

“The Competition Commission has already identified job losses as a big concern in its investigation. While we support its suggestion that conditions be put before any decision to approve the merger; we feel strongly that these proposed conditions are still inadequate,” said COSATU spokesman, Sizwe Pamla in a statement.

SABMiller announced last year it had accepted a takeover bid by the world’s largest brewer takeover bid by Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev).

If approved, the deal would be one of the largest mergers in corporate history.

COSATU said given the 34% expanded unemployment rate in the country and the mass job losses witnessed in sectors such as mining ...More info on site
