STABILITY OF HOP AROMA COMPOUNDS IN BEER
ABSTRACT
Using the U.S. hop variety Lemondrop, a German
research team investigated how beer type influences
the concentrations of hop aroma compounds
and how these concentrations change over time.
With the GC-method described they were able to
determine not only monoterpene alcohols and some
sesquiterpenes, but also various esters in the late and
dry hopped beers. The results showed significantly
higher concentrations of the mono- and sesquiterpenes
myrcene, beta-caryophyllene, alpha-humulene, beta-farnesene
and beta-limonene in the pale ale style beer when
compared to pilsner type beer (maybe filtration has an
effect). No significant differences in these two beers
styles were found for the more polar terpene alcohols
linalool, geraniol, and alpha-terpineol. Only the amount of
beta-citronellol differed, which was lower in the pale ale.
The behavior of esters among themselves was different.
A significantly higher amount of isoamyl acetate was
detectable in the pale ale, and little difference was
seen in 2-methylbutyl isobutanoate between the two beers types. Ethyl dodecanoate was detectable in a
higher amount in the pilsner as compared to the pale
ale. It was thought that perhaps the differences for
esters were influenced by the types of yeast used in
fermentation. A higher concentration of 2-undecanone
was seen in the pale ale but no significant differences
were detected for 2-nonanone and 2-decanone. With
regard to stability of the aroma compounds, all showed
a decrease in concentration over the storage time of 12
months except for alpha-terpineol.

USA: The “King of Beers” but suffers from continuous volume decline
|
There's no doubt when it comes to the amount of beer brewed, Anheuser-Busch InBev reigns supreme in the U.S., where it accounts for 46% of the market all by itself, as well as globally, where it is also the largest brewer in the world, The Motley Fool reported.
In 2015 AB InBev brewed 413 million hectolitres of beer - that's some 10.9 billion gallons, or over 351 million barrels - while No. 2 brewer SABMiller reported it produced 324 million hectolitres last year, or 276 million barrels. In comparison, leading US craft brewer Boston Beer produced 4 million barrels. And the 4,100 craft breweries in existence in the U.S. today collectively produced just 22 million barrels.
But if bigger were always better, then Anheuser-Busch, Miller, and No. 3 brewer Molson Coors would be seeing sales grow, and in the USA that is not the case. According to the Brewers Association's mid-year report last July, craft production volumes were up 16% over 2014 and had reached an 11% share of total volume production for beer, which on a retail dollar basis, gave the industry almost 20% market share. Considering the total beer market itself was up just 0.5% in 2014, it's been the

Jamaica: Nearly J$3 bln worth of Desnoes & Geddes shares still out of Heineken control
|
Nearly J$3 billion worth of Desnoes & Geddes shares remain outside of the control of international brewery giant Heineken, which sought to fully acquire the local brewery that trades as Red Stripe Jamaica, The Gleaner reported on March 16.
It signals on the surface that some local shareholders defied selling and now retain hold on a combined 117.6 million shares or 4.2 per cent of Red Stripe. The combined market value of those shares up to January 14 totalled J$2.89 billion since the stock closed at J$24.73. That equates to more value than many of Jamaica's medium-sized companies.
"Following the completion on 21st January of the tender offer to purchase for cash all outstanding ordinary shares of D&G, Heineken holds 95.8 per cent of the share capital of this company," said Heineken chief executive Jean-FranÁois van Boxmeer in the company's newly released annual report.
Heineken had sought to acquire all the 2.8 billion outstanding shares in Red Stripe. It needed to hit a threshold above 80 per cent in order to follow through on plans to delist the beer stock.
Despite the possibility of delisting from the JSE, the stock continues to trade periodically: on March 10, 60,280 units traded; on March 3, trades

Australia: Carlton & United Breweries to reclaim its place as Australia’s No. 1 brewer after AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
|
Carlton & United Breweries will reclaim its place as Australia’s number one brewer in the wake of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s takeover of SABMiller, acknowledges Lion Beer Wine & Spirits managing director James Brindley.
“We’re currently the largest brewer in Australia, but with AB InBev taking over SABMiller, I think that’s only for a few more months,” Brindley told the Institute of Brewers and Distillers 2016 Convention in Sydney on March 15, Australian Brews News reported.
“The crown of the largest brewer, or I can say in Spanish, the Corona of the largest brewer, is going to pass back to CUB,” he said.
The ACCC has proposed a date of April 14 to announce the findings from its investigation into the local impacts of the deal dubbed ‘Megabrew’.
Competition law expert John Kettle last year told Australian Brews News the transaction is just about guaranteed safe passage in this market.
