Brewery news USA: Craft beer industry reports another successful year
The Brewers Association (BA), the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers, on March 22 released 2015 data on U.S. craft brewing growth. With more breweries than even before, small and independent craft brewers now represent 12 percent market share of the overall beer industry. In 2015, craft brewers produced 24.5 million barrels, and saw a 13 percent rise in volume and a 16 percent increase in retail dollar value. Retail dollar value was estimated at $22.3 billion, representing 21 percent market share. “For the past decade, craft brewers have charged into the market, seeing double digit growth for eight of those years,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “There are still a lot of opportunities and areas for additional growth. An important focus will remain on quality as small and independent brewers continue to lead the local, full-flavored beer movement.” Additionally, in 2015 the number of operating breweries in the U.S. grew 15 percent, totaling 4,269 breweries—the most at any time in American history. Small and independent breweries account for 99 percent of the breweries in operation, broken down as follows: 2,397 microbreweries, 1,650 brewpubs and 178 regional craft breweries. Throughout the year, there ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Alberta set to launch Canada’s first crop insurance for malting barley
Alberta is set to launch Canada’s first crop insurance product for malting barley this year, Canadian Cattlemen reported on March 21.

The province’s Agriculture Financial Services Corp. (AFSC) last week said it will now provide insurance coverage for a malting end-use for growers with malt barley contracts.

The coverage is subject to a contract from a licensed buyer, with a minimum of 40 tonnes contracted, AFSC said.

However, clients won’t be able to insure both malt barley and commercial barley for the same crop year. If both malt and feed barley varieties are grown on the same farm, coverage will be restricted to commercial on all barley acres a producer grows.

Among other changes for 2016, organic producers will now be eligible for production insurance, through a new option that will work “similarly” to AFSC’s standard production insurance programs.

AFSC’s annual insurance program has been changed to include winterkill as a designated peril for pedigreed alfalfa seed production loss insurance.

Individual coverage will now be available through the bee overwintering insurance program.

More changes will also be made to field pea insurance “as the crop shifts to an edible end-use,” AFSC said, and a new distinct category will be set up for yellow dry beans.

AFSC clients will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev introducing another Mexican beer in ten states
As sales of Mexican imports continue to grow, Anheuser-Busch InBev announced on March 21 plans to bring another label from south of the border into select U.S. markets, Brewbound.com reported.

In a press release, AB InBev said it would begin rolling out Estrella Jalisco, a light-flavored 4.5 percent ABV pilsner originally brewed in the city of Guadalajara, across 10 states this month.

“Many Mexican and Mexican-Americans have roots in Jalisco, and we’re excited to reunite them with the beer that they—or their relatives—could previously only enjoy in Mexico,” Jorge Inda Meza, marketing director, West Region for Anheuser-Busch said via the statement.

The brand’s red, blue and yellow label is a “nod to the flag of Jalisco, and the crest on its packaging is inspired by the coat of arms of Guadalajara,” AB InBev noted in the release.

“Estrella Jalisco is a symbol of Mexican pride that evokes rich traditions and history,” Inda Meza added.

The U.S. launch will be supported through an “integrated marketing campaign,” and the company hopes to attract drinkers to the label by bringing “Mexican traditions to life” and “celebrating the customs of the Jalisco region.”

Estrella Jalisco is brewed by AB InBev subsidiary Grupo Modelo S.A.B. de C.V., and rollouts in California, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR & VA: Deschutes Brewery decides to build new brewery in Roanoke
A recruitment campaign that began more than four years ago and included a vigorous and unprecedented grassroots crusade culminated on March 22 in an announcement that Oregon-based Deschutes Brewery is Roanoke bound, Fredericksburg.com reported on March 23.

A standing-room-only crowd at the City Market Building's Charter Hall greeted the news with hoots and cheers, sustained applause and, ultimately, a group toast and the clank of beer bottles filled with Deschutes’ various brews, including Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Fresh Squeezed IPA.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Deschutes executives, including founder Gary Fish, announced on March 22 that the craft brewer plans to invest $85 million and build its East Coast production brewery on about 49 acres at the Roanoke Centre for Industry and Technology, a city business park off U.S. 460 in the vicinity of Blue Hills Golf Club.

That won’t happen for a while, though. Construction will begin in 2019, Deschutes said. The company expects to start shipping beer from Roanoke in about five years.

Fish said on March 22 that the project will require “a good two years of engineering and design,” adding, “We’ve got to make sure we can finance this thing.”

After the big announcement, Fish said, “things will go quiet for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors committed to growing Leinenkugel, Blue Moon “craft” brands
Dick Leinenkugel has logged countless hours in Texas and Southern California lately, spreading the gospel of shandies in locales with abundant sunshine and underdeveloped craft beer markets, Chicago Tribune reported on March 22.

"I think we're poised for a very big year," said Leinenkugel, 58, president of the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company.

As the craft beer industry continues to boom, Chicago-based MillerCoors — purveyor of mainstream beers like Miller Lite and Coors Light — is responding by doubling down on Blue Moon and Leinenkugel, the two top sellers in its Tenth and Blake craft and imports division. Beginning next month, quirky television commercials will attempt to introduce consumers throughout the U.S. to Leinenkugel: "German-style beer crafted with the spirit of Wisconsin."

Meanwhile, Blue Moon Brewing Co., best known for its Belgian White ale, is unleashing its own promotional barrage, including its first new packaging in more than 20 years, an ad campaign, and, this summer, the opening of a brewery in Denver's burgeoning craft beer scene in the River North art district.

It's all about staying relevant in an increasingly competitive craft beer landscape, said Ashley Selman, MillerCoors vice president of marketing. "We just need to keep introducing ourselves and to make ourselves accessible."

Brewery news USA, MI: Drafting Table Brewing Company to hold grand opening on March 26
Wixom’s Drafting Table Brewing Company announces its grand opening, planned for noon-midnight Saturday, March 26. Eight masterfully crafted beers will be on tap and the Wixom Downtown Development Authority will be assisting with the event, The Oakland Press reported on March 21.

“We are excited for the Drafting Table to open next Saturday,” said Debra Barker, Director of Economic Development for the City of Wixom. “This is the type of small business that will draw people to our expanding Village Center Area downtown and is right in line with Main Street Oakland County’s business development initiatives. Our local businesses and residents are really looking forward to it.”

Partnering with Wixom’s downtown restaurants, Drafting Table patrons can order takeout and bring their own food into the brewery to eat while enjoying a cold draught. “We are so glad to finally be opening our doors after almost a year of construction and government approvals,” said owner and head brewer, Aaron Rzeznik. “We will have quite a variety of beer styles and plan to start with some of my favorite recipes, such as a Saison, IPA, Stout and Imperial IPA, to name a few. We have been brewing day and night to make sure that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Spanish Marie Brewing Company coming to Miami soon
Spanish Marie Brewing Company is coming to Miami, and soon West Kendall will have a local spot where beer is made, Miami New Times reported on March 18.

Spanish Marie will house a full production brewery and retail shop, nestled in a complex of warehouses near Tamiami Airport at 14241 SW 120th St. Cofounder Albert Cespedes is pleased with the location because it's becoming a high-demand area, and he acquired the space at a good price, he says.

The brewery plants itself in a region of Miami where breweries are scarce if nonexistent. "Hopefully, we'll be able to get the Kendall community behind craft beer," Cespedes says.

The founders are in the final weeks of permitting and hope to have Spanish Marie open by midsummer, although delays have been known to happen.

But one thing they can count on, other than having a location, is having already acquired the brewing equipment. Brewmaster Jaime Medina will use a seven-barrel system they picked up in Kansas.

As if starting a brewery isn't hard enough, the lengths to which Cespedes and Medina had to go to get the equipment became an adventure.

They went to Kansas and tracked down some used brewing equipment they spotted in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Florence Brewing Company aimed at May 14 opening
Unlike El Paso County, with its plethora of breweries, Fremont County, only counts a single beer producer: Royal Gorge Brewing in Cañon City. But that's about to change when Florence Brewing Company (200 S. Pikes Peak Ave., Florence) opens, on May 14, Colorado Springs Independent reported on March 23.

That's the target date for owner/brewer Hans Prahl, a 40-year-old ex-Marine who's also served in the Colorado National Guard and done tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Aurora native, with German and Danish ancestry (good beer roots), says he was doing government contract work and living in the Springs when he became attracted to the tiny town of around 4,000, deciding to build upon seven years of homebrew experience. He gained a little more knowledge helping out at JAKs and Fieldhouse (which operates on the same five-barrel brew system he's bought), and he's found networking value in joining the newly formed Southern Colorado Brewers Alliance.

Unlike his nearest neighbor, RGB, Prahl says he intends to be a distribution brewery, selling cans and Crowlers to tap into the outdoors crowd, i.e. to sell to rafters, mountain bikers and hot springs journeyers. His 1,500-square-foot taproom and smaller brewery space are both housed in a 102-year-old ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Ocean Sun Brewing opened in Orlando this week
When the co-owners of Ocean Sun Brewing needed a name for their new craft beer business, they looked to Central Florida for inspiration, Wesh Orlando reported on March 21.

"What's more Central Florida than ocean and sun?" said co-owner Steve Wilkerson. "That's what we have plenty of here."

Ocean Sun Brewing on Curry Ford Road in Orlando opened on March 21, adding to a growing list of spots that cater to craft beer lovers in Central Florida.

The microbrewery offers a range of beers - six in all - from its lighter Sunburst Kolsch (5.2 percent ABV) to its Mur De Huy Belgian dark strong ale (9 percent ABV).

"We're very passionate about creating unique flavors that not only stick to style but also open the door to expanding people's drinking experience," said Ocean Sun's head brewer Noah Cowles.

One unique feature of the 5,200-square-foot brewery and tap room is the open brew house. No walls separate the tap room from the large, stainless-steel vats, so guests can get a close-up view of where the brew is made.

"We really want to get to know our customers and make sure they are having a good experience," Cowles said.

Brewery news USA, NC: Basic Brewery now open in Hendersonville
A new craft brewery is opening on March 19 at 131 Third Ave. W. in Hendersonville, NC, and even though its name is Basic Brewery, beer drinkers will find it to be anything but basic, BlueRidgeNow.com reported on March 18.

Owners Linda and Richard Wenger will feature 15 local beers on tap with their own creations coming towards the end of the summer.

“We want to be known as a place where you can come and sample beers from other towns and plan your beer journey from the beers you taste here,” Rich Wenger said.

The idea is that people can taste a beer at Basic Brewery and then they can travel to those breweries and see what else they have to offer.

The couple will feature beers from Asheville Brewing Company, Brevard Brewing Company, Blind Squirrel Brewery located in Newland, Sylva’s Innovation Brewing Company, French Broad Brewing, Twin Leaf Brewery and Foothills Brewing from Winston-Salem.

Customers can also enjoy Naked Apple cider from Flat Rock Cider Works, a selection of white and red wines as well as soft drinks.

Unique bottle and can offerings will be available, including a coconut ale from Miami Brewing Company.

After mulling over the idea to open their own craft brewery ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Woodcock Brothers Brewing Co. takes business to the next level
Big ideas are brewing in the Village of Wilson.

Expanded seating, quicker turn-around in the kitchen, widespread distribution of their beer – and maybe even the creation of a combination banquet/concert hall – are in the works or, at least, on the drawing board, as Woodcock Brothers Brewing Co. takes business to the next level, Buffalo News reported on March 20.

Mark and Andrea Woodcock and Tim and Debbie Woodcock initially offered four original beers when they opened the doors of their brewery/restaurant in a converted, century-old Cold Storage facility at 638 Lake St. in November 2012.

They now offer a dozen varieties, and intend to start “canning” their Niagara Lager this week, creating 4,000 cans of their popular brew with an eye on widespread distribution through Certo Brothers, according to Mark Woodcock.

“Our goal is to be in the major supermarkets, like Tops and Wegmans, and in Consumer Beverage,” said Woodcock.

The kitchen boasts two wood-fired ovens and Woodcock said a third will soon be up and running, expediting meals for hungry patrons.

“We’ve had a very patient public, but the new oven is here, we just haven’t had a chance to put it in yet,” said Woodcock. “It will be in by at least ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: New Corner Brewing Company moving into new home this spring
New Corner Brewing Company will move into a new home this spring, Ball State Daily reported on March 22.

The brewery will move into downtown Muncie in May to 800 S Liberty St. from its current location at 1900 W. Mt Pleasant Blvd.

Owner Sean Brady started the production brewery after finishing full-time active duty with the National Guard in 2013.

His friend gave him his first brewing kit in 2005, and Brady fell in love with it. He wanted to try to make the same beer he and his friends enjoyed drinking from places like Savage’s Alehouse and the Fickle Peach, where New Corner’s beers are now available.

“It just kind of went from occasional brewing to 'Wow, I almost have a commercial brewing system' when I got off active duty,” Brady said. “I had a secured retirement at that time, so I decided why not make the leap and give it a shot?”

Brady said he has always wanted his company downtown, which is close to the craft beer scene with a target market of informed, discerning craft beer drinkers.

Brady said he doesn’t want to compete with other retailers, but he doesn’t view the market as competition because his beer is different ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Santa Clarita's Wolf Creek Brewery’s beers distribution expanded in Southern California
Specialized craft beer distributor Craft Beer Guild began distributing Santa Clarita's Wolf Creek Brewery’s beers throughout a six-county region in Southern California, as of March 21, an owner for Wolf Creek said.

Launched in 1997 by Rob and Laina McFerren, Wolf Creek Restaurant and Brewing Company is in Valencia on McBean Parkway Referring to it as a brewpub, the owners had a small, windowed brewery room sitting behind the bar in their restaurant for all diners to see.

In 2012 they secured industrial space in the Mann Biomedical Park for a full-scale brewery and tasting room, which opened in 2013. It still operates there today.

“We’re really excited to partner with Craft Beer Guild,” said co-owner Laina McFerren. “They have a great footprint in Southern California, and we love the fact that they only deal only with craft beer.”

The partnership also takes the McFerren's out of the distribution business, she said, allowing them to focus more on brewing the beer rather than the mechanics of distributing it.

With 150 accounts of their own, working with the craft beer distributor hopefully will help increase sales as their beer is introduced into new regions.

“We were self-distributing throughout Los Angeles,” she said. “Now we won’t have to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Fonta Flora Brewery to become the first true farmhouse brewery in Western North Carolina
Fonta Flora Brewery of Morganton has just secured a unique expansion property in partnership with the Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina and Lake James State Park. With the purchase of a historic 53-acre dairy farm, Fonta Flora will become the first true farmhouse brewery in Western North Carolina, Mountain Xpress reported on March 22.

Situated on the Old Whippoorwill Dairy Farm just outside of Nebo, the future brewery sits three miles from a late-19th century agricultural settlement, also known as Fonta Flora, which provided the brewery with its name. The Fonta Flora community was comprised of roughly 100 predominantly African-American sharecroppers who were displaced in 1916 when the village was flooded during the creation of Lake James.

The descendants of the original Fonta Flora inhabitants have taken notice of the brewery’s attention to their history. “They come in here and see everything with Fonta Flora written on it, and it just brings tears to their eyes,” says head brewer and co-owner Todd Boera. It was important to Boera and fellow co-owners Mark and David Bennett to memorialize the historic lost community.

“We all fell in love with the romanticism, the history, the folklore and the community, [and] Fonta Flora will never be forgotten ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller may get approval of SA competition authorities sooner than expected
The South African leg of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s (AB InBev’s) takeover bid for SABMiller may be completed sooner than initially expected, Business Day Live reported on March 22.

The Competition Commission believes it is on target to meet the extended April 5 deadline for the completion of its inquiry into AB InBev’s proposed acquisition of SABMiller.

Assuming no last-minute interventions, that the commission approves the deal and there are no unexpected disputes at the Competition Tribunal, it is possible SA’s competition authorities will have completed consideration of the $108 bln transaction by the end of May.

Hitting the April 5 deadline (the transaction was lodged with the commission on December 14) would be a considerable achievement for the commission, given the size and profile of the transaction. Although there are no major competition issues, the merger does raise some public interest concerns.

Tembinkosi Bonakele, the competition commissioner, said it was normal to have multiple extensions in large mergers.

"This phase of the timetable is not entirely in the commission’s control, as we’re required to get input from all stakeholders affected by the transaction, but I expect our team will be able to finish by the April 5 deadline."

Brewery news Myanmar: Heineken aiming at market leadership in Myanmar by 2020
Heineken intends to become the market leader in Myanmar’s beer market by 2020, confident that it can beat local and foreign products in one of the biggest emerging markets in the Asia Pacific region, The Nation reported on March 21.

"We are the last brewery to come to the market. Currently, we are No 5 in the market. We hope to move up one position every year. Next year, we want to be No 4. After that, No 3, No 2, and eventually we aim to be No 1 in the market," said Lester Tan, managing director of APB Alliance Brewery, the producer and distributor of Heineken in Myanmar.

Sales of the Dutch beer started six months ago. It is competing fiercely against local and foreign brands like Myanmar, Dagon, Mandalay, and Tuborg, a product of Carlsberg, which has gained more popularity despite controversies. Before Carlsberg started production in May 2015, the market had been dominated by local brewers.

Tan said that Myanmar showed huge market potential thanks to its fast urbanisation, population growth, economic expansion and increasing middle class. He believed that Myanmar would follow Vietnam, which has become one of the top three biggest markets of Heineken International in Asia ...More info on site

Following the conclusion of the acquisition of shares under the buyout proposal by beverages giant Heineken, Desnoes and Geddes Ltd has submitted its application for the delisting of the company`s securities from the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE), with effect from March 31, the company said on March 18.

Heineken, a Swedish subsidiary owned by Heineken NV in the Netherlands, is one of the world's leading marketer of ciders and beers. Desnoes and Geddes, a Jamaican company, produces Red Stripe, Malta and Dragon.

Brewery news Australia: Carlton and United Breweries launch another heritage beer
Carlton and United Breweries has kept up its tradition with heritage beers after launching McCracken's Amber Ale in Melbourne on March 22, TheShout reported.

McCracken's City Brewery was an integral part of CUB's formation, being the oldest of six independent breweries, including Foster's and Carlton, which united in 1907.

CUB's intellectual property manager, and resident heritage expert, Mathew O'Keefe, told TheShout: "The branding for McCracken's is a little bit different. When you go into the heritage room at the brewery in Abbotsford, on the wall as soon as you go in, there is this old photograph of the McCracken brewery workers and they are having a tug-of-war. It looks wonderful and so the tap badges that we give to the pubs have all got these 30-40 year old blokes playing tug-of-war and it looks very different.

"The materials for the taps and the pubs are handcrafted in Fitzroy, it's something that CUB has put support behind and hopefully the trade will be happy with what we've done.

"The McCracken's name itself is a famous Melbourne name and it's a strong brand name as well. Because CUB's heritage goes back so far, we have all these great local stories and McCracken's is a great Melbourne ...More info on site

Brewery news EU: Heineken brews limited-edition lager with rare type of ‘mother’ yeast
Heineken has launched a limited-edition lager brewed using a rare type of yeast, and harbours plans to release further new products in the near future, FoodBev.com reported on March 22.

The new H41 beer is made from a rare “mother yeast” discovered in Patagonia, the name in turn being derived from the initial letter of Heineken and the latitude coordinate of the beech forest where the yeast was first found.

Developed by the brand’s master brewers, the new lager has a fuller taste, with spicy notes balanced by subtle fruity hints, the Dutch beer maker said. It will be launched in Italy in March and selected outlets in the Netherlands from April, available on draught and in 330ml bottles.

Heineken master brewer Willem van Waesberghe said: “Central to the famous Heineken taste is our unique A-yeast. It was first used 130 years ago by Dr Elion, a Heineken brewer trained by Louis Pasteur. It is still used today. The exact make up of our A-yeast is a closely guarded secret.

“However, when the ‘mother’ of our A-yeast was discovered in Patagonia, it presented us with a unique opportunity. Using our unrivalled expertise, Heineken’s master brewers began to work with the mother yeast to unlock ...More info on site
