USA: US craft beer export grows 16.3% in 2015
|
The Brewers Association (BA) — the not-for-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers in the United States — reported on March 29 export growth data for the American craft beer industry in 2015. Supported by the BA’s Export Development Program (EDP), craft beer export volume increased by 16.3 percent in 2015, now totaling 446,151 barrels and worth $116 million.
Growth was seen in all major markets, most notably in Western Europe which saw a 33.4 percent increase. Ireland, the Netherlands, Thailand and Taiwan were the fastest growing markets in 2015.
Canada was again the leading international market for American craft beer, accounting for 51 percent of exports. Meanwhile, Sweden, Ireland and the United Kingdom each took a market share of approximately 10 percent. The top five was rounded out by Australia, which accounted for 4 percent of exports.
“Small and independent craft brewers are putting American beer on the global map,” said Bob Pease, president and CEO, Brewers Association. “There’s a growing thirst from beer lovers in countries around the world for bold, innovative products from American craft brewers. As the demand for American craft beer continues to grow abroad, the Brewers Association is pleased to support our

South Korea: 2015 beer imports hit record high
|
Beer imports to Korea hit a record high in 2015, with a growing number of Korean consumers turning to low alcohol beverages and seeking diversity, The Korea Herald reported on March 30.
According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation, Korea imported 170,919 tons of beer worth $141.9 million last year, a 43 percent increase in volume and a 27 percent increase in value of beer imports from the previous year.
The most popular imported beer was from Japan, which exported 46,244 tons to Korea in 2015, over a quarter of all beer imports.
Japan was followed by Germany, which exported 24,874 tons to Korea.
The Netherlands, which has had a strong hold on the Korean imported beer market with popular brands such as Heineken, was unseated from its third-place slot by China in 2015.
Last year saw a 70.6 percent increase in the volume of imported beer from China, bringing the total to 19,604 tons.
According to a report released by aT in December last year, beer was the fastest-growing import market among alcoholic drinks in the past five years.
Changing drinking trends among Korean consumers have led to higher consumption of drinks with low alcohol content such as beer. Imported beer, it

The Philippines: San Miguel Corp plans to raise 15 billion pesos through preferred shares
|
Philippine conglomerate San Miguel Corp plans to raise another 15 billion pesos ($324.92 million) through preferred shares or corporate notes in the first half of the year to refinance debts, company officials said on March 30.
San Miguel had said it would sell up to 73 billion pesos worth of preferred shares over three years, starting with the 30 billion pesos it issued this month.
The company continues to seek acquisitions to boost revenues. It kicked off an aggressive expansion in 2008, adding power, mining, telecommunications, oil refining and infrastructure to its stable of food, beverage and beer businesses.

Russia: Budweiser enjoying growth in Russia’s declining beer market
|
Budweiser is enjoying an unlikely source of growth in Russia’s declining beer market, even as the all-American brand continues to struggle at home, Bloomberg reported on March 30.
In a country where brewing output has fallen more than 30 percent since 2008, the self-proclaimed King of Beers is growing sales at a double-digit pace, according to the head of owner Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s Russian unit.
So what’s the deal? Unlike in the U.S. and Western Europe, Budweiser is pitched as a premium brand, boosting its appeal to a younger, more discerning Russian drinker. Yet it isn’t as expensive as some imported equivalents. By producing locally, AB InBev has been able to avoid the impact of the rouble’s drop against the dollar on the price of imported beers. Bud became Russia’s third-largest premium beer brand by volume last year, according to Nielsen estimates, placing it ahead of Heineken.
“Bud is a truly premium brand in Russia in terms of both pricing and user perception,” AB InBev country head Dmitry Shpakov said in an interview in his Moscow office.
AB InBev’s fourth-quarter results showed how the growth of premium brands such as Bud are helping its performance in Russia. Its beer volumes there declined by mid-single-digits

India: Vijay Mallya still has the right to choose his successor as chairman of United Breweries
|
Although Dutch brewer Heineken is the biggest stakeholder in United Breweries, joint venture partner Vijay Mallya has the right to choose his successor as chairman of the company, according to the terms of a 2009 agreement. That will need to be amended if Heineken wants to pick its own nominee, the Economic Times cited on March 28 several people aware of the matter.
Diageo, which controls United Spirits, recently reached a $75 million agreement with Mallya for his exit from the company. Mallya is under pressure from lenders and investigative agencies over more than Rs 9,000 crore in dues stemming from loans to Kingfisher Airlines, the carrier he promoted.
Heineken now has a 43 per cent stake in UB compared with Mallya's 32 per cent — in 2009, both had 37.5 per cent each. After raising its stake recently to 42.2 per cent for 24 million euros, Heineken said the move would not change UB's governance structure. However, analysts said the deal is being regarded by many as a possible move to take control of UB.
To be sure, relations between Mallya and Heineken are said to be cordial in the absence of any ownership or financial tussle between the
