Brewery news USA: US craft beer export grows 16.3% in 2015
The Brewers Association (BA) — the not-for-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers in the United States — reported on March 29 export growth data for the American craft beer industry in 2015. Supported by the BA’s Export Development Program (EDP), craft beer export volume increased by 16.3 percent in 2015, now totaling 446,151 barrels and worth $116 million.

Growth was seen in all major markets, most notably in Western Europe which saw a 33.4 percent increase. Ireland, the Netherlands, Thailand and Taiwan were the fastest growing markets in 2015.

Canada was again the leading international market for American craft beer, accounting for 51 percent of exports. Meanwhile, Sweden, Ireland and the United Kingdom each took a market share of approximately 10 percent. The top five was rounded out by Australia, which accounted for 4 percent of exports. “Small and independent craft brewers are putting American beer on the global map,” said Bob Pease, president and CEO, Brewers Association. “There’s a growing thirst from beer lovers in countries around the world for bold, innovative products from American craft brewers. As the demand for American craft beer continues to grow abroad, the Brewers Association is pleased to support our ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Southern Illinois brewers say there is room for more growth
The ability of breweries to self-distribute their own products was the key that unlocked an industry in Southern Illinois that had most likely been underserved, according to brewers in Southern Illinois.

In June 2011, former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed Senate Bill 754 creating a craft brewer license, and an exemption to self-distribute 7,500 barrels if a brewery manufactured no more than 15,000 barrels. That number has been increased to 30,000 barrels a year in 2013, and then increased again in 2015 when Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill allowing breweries to make up to 120,000 barrels of beer per year. The bill also allowed a brewpub to simultaneously own a craft brewer’s license, Southern Business Journal reported on March 29.

Chuck Stuhrenberg, owner of Big Muddy Brewing in Murphysboro, said he was the first production brewery south of Chicago since Prohibition. He is distributing beer throughout the United States.

Stuhrenberg was the first, but soon a line of breweries followed him and now there are six breweries just in Jackson County — a fact that Stuhrenberg likes to point out, saying there are only about 60,000 people in the county, but there are six breweries, meaning the county has one of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA & AR: Stone Brewing to debut its beers in Arkansas, plans to distribute to all 50 states by year’s end
San Diego-based Stone Brewing will make its way to the south-eastern United States next week as the company debuts its beers in Arkansas, NBC San Diego reported on March 28.

Starting April 4, several of the company’s most recognizable brews will be available in bars, restaurants and retailers throughout the entire state of Arkansas for the first time ever.

From America’s Finest City to The Natural State, all of Stone’s year-round beers and various limited and special releases will be distributed by Arkansas Craft Distributors and O’Conner Distributing – the company’s wholesale partners in Arkansas.

This includes the following brews: Stone IPA; Stone Cali-Belgique IPA; Stone Go To IPA; Stone Delicious IPA; Stone Ruination Double IPA 2.0; and Stone Smoked Porter.

In additional to Arkansas, Stone beers are already distributed in 41 states across the nation and 14 countries around the world. According to the U.S. Brewers Association, Stone is the ninth largest craft brewer in the U.S.

The company will boost its production even more when Stone Brewing-Richmond opens at the end of 2016 in Virginia. By the year’s end, Stone plans to distribute to all 50 U.S. states.

The beer company also plans to launch five European countries as it prepares for its highly-ambitious ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Thirsty Planet Brewing expands with additional building in Austin
Thirsty Planet Brewing Company is expanding with an additional building for beer production out in far south Austin, as reported by Austin 360.

The brewery is taking over the Capital Area Food Bank spot on 8201 South Congress Avenue. The grounds will include a new tasting room and outdoor performance area. It is expected to open by late fall this year.

St. Louis-based firm V Three Studios is designing the expansion, which will be heavy on the signature light green motif, along with wood details, communal seating, and a patio within the nearly 60,000 square foot space. Guests will be able to watch the brewery magic from inside the tasting room through glass windows.

The expansion will allow Thirsty to bottle more beers, including Buckethead IPA and Yellow Armadillo. The brewery will also be able to experiment with new types of beers, as well as broaden distribution.

Currently, the brewery is found over on Circle Drive, near Jester King Brewery. The charity-focused brewery donates various proceeds to charities, including over half the sales of the Silverback Pale Ale to the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund. Owner Brian Smittle founded Thirsty Planet in 2010 after running Coach’s, a brewpub in Oklahoma.

Brewery news USA, CA: Beachwood Brewing to move into Beach City Brewery’s Huntington Beach facility
One man’s shutter is another man’s opportunity, as Beach City Brewery in Huntington Beach will be closing down to become a production hub for Long Beach-based Beachwood Brewing, Eater LA reported on March 29. Rumors have been circulating for some time regarding Beachwood owner Gabe Gordon and his plans to acquire Beach City, but on March 29 the company confirmed the purchase and plans for the Huntington Beach facility.

Beachwood is based in and around Long Beach, operating a couple of barbecue-focused brewpubs as well as a concept-driven tasting room called the Blendery. However, it’s been difficult for the award-winning brewery to scale up production on their beers with their current business layout, so Beachwood made a decision to purchase an existing small brewery (plus all their space and equipment) and grow from a standalone facility somewhere nearby. That’s where Beach City comes in.

The Beachwood growth into Huntington Beach should allow the brewery to expand to a capacity close to 10,000 barrels annually, and will let the company grow their portfolio of existing beers. That will take some time, of course — Gordon says upwards of five years — as the licensing alone can take months. Thankfully both Long Beach and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NH: Millyard Brewing to open its doors in Nashua next month
Passionate about offering a new taste in craft beer, Nashua, NH’s first nanobrewery will open its doors next month, The Union Leader reported on March 27.

“We are ready to get this going,” said co-owner Dean Baxter. “Craft brews are so popular right now — people are really starting to appreciate them.”

Baxter, of Nashua, along with Ken Unsworth of Windham, will open the Millyard Brewery at noon on April 9. A grand celebration of events will take place until 8 p.m. at the brewery, located at 25 E. Otterson St.

They are leasing about 1,000-square-feet of warehouse space next to the Vertical Dreams indoor recreational facility, which has been fully renovated.

Complete with a small tasting room, brewing room, conditioning area and cooler space, the Millyard Brewery is ready for patrons, according to Baxter.

“We are trying to turn back the clock and go back to the millyard era. The beer and the stories will take us back to that period ...,” he said.

The brewery will be crafting four staple beers, including Nashua Pale Ale, Amoskeag Pilsner, Boott Porter and Jackson India Pale Ale IPA. Flights will be available at the brewery’s tasting room, along with four-ounce tasters. In addition, 32-ounce growler purchases and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Copper City Brewing hoping to join craft beer scene in Central New York by late fall
A new brewery is joining the craft brewing scene in Central New York, WKTV reported on March 28.

The owners of the Copper City Brewing Co., Danny Frieden and his wife Lori and Eric Daniels closed on their new building at 1111 Oneida Street in Rome on March 28. They are now in the process of applying for a New York State farm brewery license. To qualify as a farm brewery, the brewer must utilize ingredients from within New York State and 20 percent of the hops used must be from New York based farms.

Frieden and Daniels both got their interest in making beer through homebrewing.

Frieden hopes opening a brewery in Rome will help push the city forward.

"I've noticed that if you bring a brewery to a community, it changes everything around it," Frieden said. "Rome is really in a resurgence and I think a brewery is something that will really get things going."

The pair are hoping to be up and running by late fall and plan to brew 300 gallons of beer per week to start.

Brewery news USA, DE: Revelation Craft Brewing Company anticipates opening its microbrewery next month
For Revelation Craft Brewing Company, getting the Belltown Church brewpub approved was reason enough to celebrate, Delmarvanow reported on March 28.

But victories keep coming as Revelation anticipates opening its microbrewery next month.

"It's all very exciting," brewmaster Patrick Staggs said with a smile.

The microbrewery, located on Central Street in West Rehoboth, will act as a tasting room and "test pilot facility", where winning beer batches will graduate to the brewpub (which will open summer 2017).

"Basically, the sky is the limit here," he said. "We purposely bought a smaller system for the microbrewery to take some risks and experiment with recipes."

The Revelation microbrewery will operate on a three-and a half barrel system, he said, producing 500 barrels a year.

Staggs hopes to open in April with a solid, six-beer lineup, including Oh Yes, an orange honey Hefeweizen made with local honey from Stag Run Farm in Georgetown. Stouts, IPAs, blondes and sour beers will also be offered.

"I've been playing around with a few old recipes up my sleeve," he said.

Staggs has been home brewing for 15 years, and has also worked for big names in the industry. He was operations manager at Dr. Pepper and Snapple for five years, before joining Dogfish Head's ...More info on site

Von Trapp Brewing, founded by the family that inspired “The Sound of Music”, is pleased to present the release of their Austrian inspired lagers to the state of Maine beginning March 28th, Brewbound.com reported.

The company’s current distribution footprint is Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and now Maine.

Brewery news USA, IN: The Sun King Brewery’s beer now available throughout Indiana
A popular beer brewed in Indianapolis is now available throughout the state of Indiana, as Friday, March 25 was a Sun King tap takeover in northern Indiana, 21Alive reported.

The Sun King Brewery is Indianapolis' largest beer brewer, and its beer could be found in the Summit City until a couple of years ago when a state law restricted the production of small breweries to 30,000 barrels per year.

After a senate bill passed last July, production was increased to 90,000 barrels a year, so for the first time, Sun King is now available all over the state including northeast Indiana.

Brewery news South Korea: 2015 beer imports hit record high
Beer imports to Korea hit a record high in 2015, with a growing number of Korean consumers turning to low alcohol beverages and seeking diversity, The Korea Herald reported on March 30.

According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation, Korea imported 170,919 tons of beer worth $141.9 million last year, a 43 percent increase in volume and a 27 percent increase in value of beer imports from the previous year.

The most popular imported beer was from Japan, which exported 46,244 tons to Korea in 2015, over a quarter of all beer imports.

Japan was followed by Germany, which exported 24,874 tons to Korea.

The Netherlands, which has had a strong hold on the Korean imported beer market with popular brands such as Heineken, was unseated from its third-place slot by China in 2015.

Last year saw a 70.6 percent increase in the volume of imported beer from China, bringing the total to 19,604 tons.

According to a report released by aT in December last year, beer was the fastest-growing import market among alcoholic drinks in the past five years.

Changing drinking trends among Korean consumers have led to higher consumption of drinks with low alcohol content such as beer. Imported beer, it ...More info on site

Brewery news The Philippines: San Miguel Corp plans to raise 15 billion pesos through preferred shares
Philippine conglomerate San Miguel Corp plans to raise another 15 billion pesos ($324.92 million) through preferred shares or corporate notes in the first half of the year to refinance debts, company officials said on March 30.

San Miguel had said it would sell up to 73 billion pesos worth of preferred shares over three years, starting with the 30 billion pesos it issued this month.

The company continues to seek acquisitions to boost revenues. It kicked off an aggressive expansion in 2008, adding power, mining, telecommunications, oil refining and infrastructure to its stable of food, beverage and beer businesses.

Brewery news Russia: Budweiser enjoying growth in Russia’s declining beer market
Budweiser is enjoying an unlikely source of growth in Russia’s declining beer market, even as the all-American brand continues to struggle at home, Bloomberg reported on March 30.

In a country where brewing output has fallen more than 30 percent since 2008, the self-proclaimed King of Beers is growing sales at a double-digit pace, according to the head of owner Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s Russian unit.

So what’s the deal? Unlike in the U.S. and Western Europe, Budweiser is pitched as a premium brand, boosting its appeal to a younger, more discerning Russian drinker. Yet it isn’t as expensive as some imported equivalents. By producing locally, AB InBev has been able to avoid the impact of the rouble’s drop against the dollar on the price of imported beers. Bud became Russia’s third-largest premium beer brand by volume last year, according to Nielsen estimates, placing it ahead of Heineken.

“Bud is a truly premium brand in Russia in terms of both pricing and user perception,” AB InBev country head Dmitry Shpakov said in an interview in his Moscow office.
