Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev agrees to create $69 mln fund to support South African beer industry and protect jobs
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV agreed to create a 1 billion rand ($69 million) fund that will support the South African beer industry and protect jobs in the country to help seal approval for its proposed $105 billion takeover of SABMiller Plc, Bloomberg reported on April 14.

The deal struck between the Budweiser maker and the South African government includes a pledge to preserve its full-time employment levels in the country for five years after the deal closes and to not make any involuntary job cuts, Leuven, Belgium-based AB InBev said in a statement. It also includes financial help for new farms to produce raw materials like hops and barley for the combined company.

“This transaction is by far the largest yet to be considered by the competition authorities and it’s important that South Africans know that the takeover of a local iconic company will bring tangible benefits,” the country’s Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel said in the statement. “Jobs and inclusive growth are the central concerns in our economy.”

The pledge echoes one made by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s biggest retailer, which agreed to set up a 200 million-rand development fund when it acquired Massmart Holdings Ltd. in 2011.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corp. considers reducing beer prices after drop in revenue and volumes
Delta Corp Ltd., Zimbabwe’s biggest company by market capitalization, is considering whether to drop its beer prices after full-year revenue and volumes fell, Bloomberg reported on April 14.

The company, which is about 23 percent-owned by SABMiller Plc, will “review the competitiveness of its offerings,” Harare-based Delta said in an e-mailed statement on April 14. “Consumers continue to shift toward affordable brands.”

Revenue fell 7 percent in the year through March, while volumes of lager produced declined 8 percent, Delta said. Volumes of the company’s cheaper Chibuku sorghum beer gained 15 percent in the fourth quarter, cutting the full-year decline to 3 percent.

Delta is battling weak consumer spending in Zimbabwe amid a crisis that has seen the economy shrink by about half since 2000 and the economy experience deflation for 16 consecutive months. The company’s volume and revenue performance “largely mirrors the subdued economic activity,” Delta said.

Barley news Canada: Barley use to increase 10% in 2015-16
For 2015-16, Canada’s total domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 10% to 6.1 million tonnes which is below the previous five-year average. The modest usage increase is a function of increased feed use while industrial use remains unchanged, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its April report.

Exports are forecast to decrease by 23% to 1.9 mln tonnes due to lower world feed barley trade and trend malt barley demand.

Barley carry-out stocks are expected to increase by 31% to 1.6 mln tonnes which is higher than the previous five-year average.

The Lethbridge cash feed barley price is forecast to increase from 2014-15 due to the tight total supply, good domestic feed barley demand and trend demand for malt quality.

Over the past month, the Lethbridge price softened slightly in spite of long-term seasonality. However, by the beginning of April, prices increased slightly. Compared to the base Lethbridge cash price, this crop year’s feed barley basis has been better than the previous five-year average in Alberta and Saskatchewan. However, in Manitoba the feed barley basis has been slightly below the previous five-year average but higher than the previous three-year average. Malt barley pricing on the Canadian prairies has been ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Australian scientists say they developed the world’s first gluten-free barley
Australian scientists say they’ve developed the world’s first World Health Organization-approved “gluten-free” barley, Voice of America reported on April 14.

Developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Kebari barley has already attracted the attention of brewers. One German brewery, Radeberger, has already bought 70 tons.

"Gluten-free barley will be highly sought after, with European brewers particularly interested," said John O'Brien, a brewer of gluten-free beer in Melbourne, according to the Reuters news agency.

Kebari is not genetically modified, but a result of a “...program of breeding out the gluten by cross-breeding low gluten barley varieties, said the CSIRO,” according to Reuters.

It has been patented by CSIRO.

Reuters reported that “gluten free is one of the world's fastest growing consumer trends with the market expected to grow more than 10 percent a year until 2020 to be worth $7.59 billion, a 2015 report by MarketsandMarket.”

"A true gluten-free barley variety is a true game changer; there is going to be a massive market for the product," Phin Ziebell, an agribusiness economist at National Australia Bank, told Reuters.

While Kebari is not 100 percent gluten-free, “CSIRO said it had 10,000 times less gluten than traditional strains, or about 5 parts of gluten per million, well ...More info on site
