Barley news Canada: Barley use to increase 10% in 2015-16
For 2015-16, Canada’s total domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 10% to 6.1 million tonnes which is below the previous five-year average. The modest usage increase is a function of increased feed use while industrial use remains unchanged, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its April report.

Exports are forecast to decrease by 23% to 1.9 mln tonnes due to lower world feed barley trade and trend malt barley demand.

Barley carry-out stocks are expected to increase by 31% to 1.6 mln tonnes which is higher than the previous five-year average.

The Lethbridge cash feed barley price is forecast to increase from 2014-15 due to the tight total supply, good domestic feed barley demand and trend demand for malt quality.

Over the past month, the Lethbridge price softened slightly in spite of long-term seasonality. However, by the beginning of April, prices increased slightly. Compared to the base Lethbridge cash price, this crop year’s feed barley basis has been better than the previous five-year average in Alberta and Saskatchewan. However, in Manitoba the feed barley basis has been slightly below the previous five-year average but higher than the previous three-year average. Malt barley pricing on the Canadian prairies has been ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: War Water Brewery welcomes amendments to St. Clair city’s code of zoning ordinances
You can almost smell the yeasty concoction of malt, grain and hops cooking away in the War Water Brewery in downtown St. Clair, New Baltimore Voice Newspapers reported on April 8.

The St. Clair City Council recently took another step toward making a regional brewer the centerpiece of the city's Riverview Plaza when it unanimously amended the city's code of zoning ordinances to allow micro-brewers, small wine makers and small distillers as permitted uses in existing buildings in the Riverside Drive district of Downtown Redevelopment District. The change allows the same enterprises as "special approval uses" in buildings requiring modifications.

The amended ordinance defines micro-brewers, small wine makers and small distillers as "any business whose primary purpose is the creation of alcoholic beverages, where such business has been granted a license issued by the state of Michigan Liquor Control Commission for such operation."

"The way the Downtown Redevelopment District was originally written, it left some gaps in what could or could not be there," said Kristopher Paul, the local principal of War Water Brewery. "They didn't consider micro-breweries, small wineries or distilleries. This essentially allows us to move ahead with our larger development."

The St. Clair Planning Commission held a public hearing on the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Flying Boat Brewing Co. breaks ground on St. Petersburg facility on April 14
St. Petersburg's growing beer scene welcomed another craft brewery into the fold on April 14, Tampa Bay Times reported.

Flying Boat Brewing Co. broke ground on an 11,000-square-foot facility at 1776 11th Ave. N. Owners Glenn Zakany, Tanner Zakany and Josh Perian joined St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman at the brewery near Woodlawn Park.

St. Petersburg is already home to a half dozen breweries, like Three Daughters Brewing, which recently announced it's adding another warehouse. Green Bench Brewing and Cycle Brewing aren't far away. Cage Brewing opened in St. Pete's Grand Central District in January.

But the Flying Boat team isn't worried about it being too crowded.

"The beer community here is amazing. There's zero competition, everyone is overly accommodating," Perian said. "On the day we had our tanks delivered, some of the team from Green Bench Brewing came over and helped us unload them."

Steven Duffy, owner of Green Bench Brewing, attended the ground breaking ceremony at Flying Boat on April 14 to show support.

"People like to talk about the beer bubble in St. Pete, but I really don't think it's oversaturated at all," Duffy said.

Florida still lags behind other U.S. states in the per capita number of craft breweries in operation, said Bart ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Urban Harvest Brewing quietly opens in Milwaukee
Urban Harvest Brewing Company quietly opened its brewery and tap room this past weekend at 1024 S. 5th St. in Milwaukee, OnMilwaukee.com reported on April 13.

Owner and brewer Steve Pribek has been home-brewing for nearly 17 years. But in mid-July 2015, he took the leap and signed a lease on the Walker's Point building which currently houses the nano-brewery.

"In the past decade, the business model of a nano-brewery has really become more realistic," says Pribek. "It's always been my dream to start a brewery, and when I finally started researching, the dream began to take shape and became a reality."

Pribek has installed a two-barrel brewing system, which he'll use for production. The building also houses a tap room, which features bar and table seating for about 80 people as well as a view of the brewing area. In addition, the first floor houses an old theater space with a stage and about 50 stadium-style seats, which Pribek says the brewery will rent out for events.

Currently, there are six beers on tap at Urban Harvest – 414 Golden Ale, Black Puppy Pale Ale, Old Towne Amber, H.C. IPA, Corkscrew IPA (infused with cabernet soaked oak) and Ach Ya Der Hey-Fe Weizen ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Old Stove Brewing Company ready to open in Seattle
Old Stove Brewing Company is ready to open inside Pike Place Market in Seattle, Eater reported on April 13.

The brewery will hold its grand opening on Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. with eight beers on tap: an IPA, wheat, pale ale, pilsner, saison, stout, double IPA, and a brown ale, with a session IPA and a Cascadian dark ale coming next week. At the opening party, the brewery will donate two dollars from every beer sold to the Pike Up! campaign, which is supporting the new Pike Place MarketFront expansion slated for 2017.

Old Stove's taproom currently sits on First Avenue between Pike and Pine, with its production facility housed one floor below. That will all move next year when the MarketFront expansion opens. Old Stove will join Honest Biscuits, Indi Chocolate, and JarrBar in the new building.

Old Stove evidently shares neighboring Pike Brewing Company's fascination with memorabilia; the new taproom will feature neon beer and brewery signs; museum-style display cases with beer cans from the 30s, 40s, and 50s; a cast iron, nickel plated Kalamazoo stove (circa 1905) from the Kalamazoo Stove Company (1902-1952); antique stove handles for tap pulls; and a 25-foot mural depicting a 1905 barroom ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Trillium Brewing Company launched by husband and wife team in Canton and Boston
JC and Esther Tetreault got married seven years ago on a vineyard in Stonington, Conn. The owners of the vineyard, a husband and wife team, were so inspiring that the Tetreaults decided to follow in their footsteps - sort of - and open a brewery. As a result, Trillium Brewing Company, a New England farmhouse style brewery with locations in Canton and Boston, was born, Wicked Local reported on April 9.

“The owners of the vineyard were pretty inspirational,” said JC, a Brighton resident who affectionately refers to himself as a beer nerd. “They pursued what they really wanted and kind of made it happen. They just seemed so incredibly happy about what they were able to accomplish. We didn't want to wait for the retirement time in our lives to pursue our life's dream, so we decided to just kind of go for it and start the process much earlier than that.”

Having five times the capacity of their Boston location in Fort Point, the Canton brewery that opened in December on Shawmut Road has 16,000 square feet, a 30-barrel brew house, 4,000 square feet of retail space, and a tasting room with a rotating menu of complimentary samples.

Brewery news USA, OK: Krebs Brewing Company planning to expand beer production
A McAlester brewing company is planning to expand its beer production at a 52,000-square-foot facility that it recently acquired in the area.

The McAlester News-Capital reports that Krebs Brewing Company plans to relocate the bulk of its current beer production at Pete's Place Restaurant to Steven Taylor Industrial Park.

Company president Zach Prichard says the move will allow the brewery to make five to six times more beer than it currently does. He says employment could double in the next three years with the expansion.

The company's number of employees has already grown quickly. In 2013, four full-time employees worked at the facility. In three years, that number has increased to 30 employees.

The company is known for brewing Choc Beer Company and Prairie Artisan Ales products.

Brewery news USA, PA: Beers by Pizza Boy Brewing finally coming to Pittsburgh
One of the best and most innovative breweries in Pennsylvania is finally coming to Pittsburgh. From superhopped IPA’s to coffee infused stouts to barrelaged sours, Pizza Boy brews world class beers to fit a variety of pallets, Brewbound.com reported on April 14.

Pizza Boy prides themselves on an extremely in depth and high quality barrel aging program. They use only quality charred oak, spent wine and liquor barrels to create complex and wild creations for limited bottle releases and drafts. With over a hundred barrels and a recently expanded facility to increase storage, Pizza Boy is committed to bringing more of their exceptional sours and barrelaged beers to market than ever before.

Newcomer Steel City Beer Wholesalers will be importing and distributing the brewery in Western PA. Based in Lawrenceville, Steel City Beer focuses on distributing craft beer without being financially controlled by a major brand. Pizza Boy is the second of many top quality craft breweries that Steel City Beer has lined up to bring to the Western PA market.

Pizza Boy is set to launch in the Pittsburgh market in early May. There will be several launch events at local bars and bottle shops. More updates will follow on social media ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. expanding distribution outside of southern California and the state
Buellton-based Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. plans to expand its distribution outside Southern California and the state, The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported on April 10.

The craft brewer that’s been steadily growing since its founding in 2010 will now be available in stores throughout Central Valley’s Kern County by partnering with two distributors there: Advance Beverage Co., in Bakersfield and Donaghy in Fresno.

There aren’t any current plans to open a taproom in the Central Valley, but Figueroa Mountain is planning to distribute beer to the Inland Empire area east of Los Angeles soon, according to brand manager Kady Fleckenstein.

By the end of 2016, the brewer plans to expand distribution to about five surrounding states, she said.

Co-founders and father-son duo Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer already distribute their brews in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. The company has tasting rooms in Arroyo Grande, Santa Maria, Buellton, Santa Barbara, Los Olivos and Westlake Village.

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev agrees to create $69 mln fund to support South African beer industry and protect jobs
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV agreed to create a 1 billion rand ($69 million) fund that will support the South African beer industry and protect jobs in the country to help seal approval for its proposed $105 billion takeover of SABMiller Plc, Bloomberg reported on April 14.

The deal struck between the Budweiser maker and the South African government includes a pledge to preserve its full-time employment levels in the country for five years after the deal closes and to not make any involuntary job cuts, Leuven, Belgium-based AB InBev said in a statement. It also includes financial help for new farms to produce raw materials like hops and barley for the combined company.

“This transaction is by far the largest yet to be considered by the competition authorities and it’s important that South Africans know that the takeover of a local iconic company will bring tangible benefits,” the country’s Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel said in the statement. “Jobs and inclusive growth are the central concerns in our economy.”

The pledge echoes one made by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s biggest retailer, which agreed to set up a 200 million-rand development fund when it acquired Massmart Holdings Ltd. in 2011.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corp. considers reducing beer prices after drop in revenue and volumes
Delta Corp Ltd., Zimbabwe’s biggest company by market capitalization, is considering whether to drop its beer prices after full-year revenue and volumes fell, Bloomberg reported on April 14.

The company, which is about 23 percent-owned by SABMiller Plc, will “review the competitiveness of its offerings,” Harare-based Delta said in an e-mailed statement on April 14. “Consumers continue to shift toward affordable brands.”

Revenue fell 7 percent in the year through March, while volumes of lager produced declined 8 percent, Delta said. Volumes of the company’s cheaper Chibuku sorghum beer gained 15 percent in the fourth quarter, cutting the full-year decline to 3 percent.

Delta is battling weak consumer spending in Zimbabwe amid a crisis that has seen the economy shrink by about half since 2000 and the economy experience deflation for 16 consecutive months. The company’s volume and revenue performance “largely mirrors the subdued economic activity,” Delta said.

Barley news Australia: Australian scientists say they developed the world’s first gluten-free barley
Australian scientists say they’ve developed the world’s first World Health Organization-approved “gluten-free” barley, Voice of America reported on April 14.

Developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Kebari barley has already attracted the attention of brewers. One German brewery, Radeberger, has already bought 70 tons.

"Gluten-free barley will be highly sought after, with European brewers particularly interested," said John O'Brien, a brewer of gluten-free beer in Melbourne, according to the Reuters news agency.

Kebari is not genetically modified, but a result of a “...program of breeding out the gluten by cross-breeding low gluten barley varieties, said the CSIRO,” according to Reuters.

It has been patented by CSIRO.

Reuters reported that “gluten free is one of the world's fastest growing consumer trends with the market expected to grow more than 10 percent a year until 2020 to be worth $7.59 billion, a 2015 report by MarketsandMarket.”

"A true gluten-free barley variety is a true game changer; there is going to be a massive market for the product," Phin Ziebell, an agribusiness economist at National Australia Bank, told Reuters.

While Kebari is not 100 percent gluten-free, “CSIRO said it had 10,000 times less gluten than traditional strains, or about 5 parts of gluten per million, well ...More info on site
