USA, MI: Hop business booming in northern Michigan
|
The commercial production of hops started in northern Michigan just a decade ago, but right now it's an explosive market, UpNorthLive.com reported on April 16.
"Historically hops have grown on the 45th parallel," said hop grower, Brian Tennis. "But they haven't been grown here on the Leelanau peninsula ever, but it's absolutely perfect conditions to do it."
Tennis was one of the first to do so in 2007 when there was only about 100 acres in northern Michigan.
Today, the amount of hops in the area is ten times that.
And the reason being?
"Without hops in the beer the beer would just be too sweet, too cloyingly sweet to drink," said Hop Lot owner and brewmaster, Steve Lutke. "It would be really, really gross."
Hop Lot says they only get about 10 percent of their hops from outside Michigan.
"We have the ability to try little bits here and there from out west," said Lutke. "They're honestly on par and some of them are much better."
And with over 200 breweries in Michigan, hop farmers are in a booming business.
"We ship out skids not only in Michigan but ship out skids all over the United States now and also in Canada," said Tennis.
And says as long as

USA, NH: New Hampshire’s craft beer scene expanding rapidly
|
The beer business is booming in New Hampshire.
More varieties than ever of Granite State suds are on tap with a line of craft brewers planning to join the industry and more than double the number of operations New Hampshire had just two years ago, New Hampshire Union Leader reported on April 16.
"There's running room here in New Hampshire," said Scott Schaier, executive director of the Beer Distributors of New Hampshire. "We've got a nice cluster in the Seacoast area, but they're all doing great. It doesn't appear like there's too many at the party right now."
Schaier said the number of licensed breweries in New Hampshire has grown to 55, with at least 16 more operators in the planning stages or awaiting the permits needed to stop planning and start brewing.
"It's pretty amazing when you consider two years ago we had 30 breweries," said Schaier, who also sits on the board of BrewNH, a nonprofit that promotes the industry and works with the state Department of Travel and Tourism to capitalize on the Granite State's beer boom.
A vast majority of the newcomers are craft brewers, who produce small batches with limited distribution and rely on the quality of

Canada, ON: Four Degrees Brewing Company launches its first beer, own facility to follow by the end of the year
|
Two guys met up for round of golf and by the end a brewing company was born, Inside Ottawa Valley reported on April 15.
Four Degrees Brewing Company was established in 2012 but instead of rushing their work, they took the time to find the perfect beer recipe.
It wasn’t until early March 2016 that they officially released the beer to the public – but not without a few trial runs beforehand, of course.
Those two golf guys are Nick Ritchie and Andrew Howard, both of Smiths Falls. They call themselves co-founders of the company. Joe Adams and Chris Haines also local guys eventually joined them as owners.
The first thought could be four guys equals four degrees but that’s not it at all.
“It’s the temperature,” said Howard. “Five degrees is too warm and three degrees is too cold. Four degrees is typically good for having beer in the fridge.”
Studies have shown that a colder temperature would actually kill the person’s taste buds, in terms of drinking beer.
“Four degrees is refreshing and unlocks the flavours.”
There is no doubt the guys are willing to have laughs along the way and bring their unique skillsets to the company. Trying to describe

USA, NC: Triangle Brewing Company decides to go out of business in May
|
Triangle Brewing Company announced on April 15 it will go out of business in two weeks, News & Observer reported.
The brewery at 918 Pearl St. has been part of the Durham social scene for nearly a decade. It opened shortly after legislators in 2005 raised the cap on how much alcohol can be in beer sold in North Carolina – a move that ushered in the state’s booming craft beer scene.
Triangle Brewing was Durham’s first brewery when it started in 2007. Once it’s gone, Durham will be home to five beer breweries, a cider brewery, a distillery and many craft beer-focused bottle shops. A handful of new breweries are planning to open in the near future.
“On Saturday, April 30th we will send this venture out in style,” co-founders Rick Tufts and Andy Miller wrote in a Facebook post announcing the closing. “The brewery’s doors will open at 4 p.m. and stay open until the last drop of beer is gone.”
Officially, they said, May 2 will be the last day – but that prior Saturday will be the final party.

USA, MO: Kansas City’s newest brewery opens its doors
|
In the West Bottoms neighborhood, something new is starting to brew, 41 KSHB reported on April 16.
Kansas City’s newest craft brewery, Stockyards Brewing Company, has opened its doors.
“Being around the history of the West Bottoms and specifically the stock yard district has really been a draw for me. It reminds me of home a little bit,” said Greg Bland, the brewery owner.
What used to be the iconic Kansas City Golden Ox has transformed into a modern-day brewery that currently produces three different beers.
Bland first started brewing beers in his college dorm room. His hobby turned into a passion, which eventually turned into a business that’s now crafting life into a neighborhood that’s become dry.
”I'm really hoping that this brewery, Stockyards Brewing, could be a driving force to get people down here. To get the beer nerds down here to come and check it out. And with the first Friday activities, with the antiquing going on down here, this neighborhood is really ready to start growing and start seeing a lot of folks down here,” said Bland.

USA, MD: Diamondback Brewing Company to open its own brewery in Baltimore this fall
|
Diamondback Brewing Company plans to take its next step as a young beer company this fall, said co-founder Colin Marshall, when it will open its first brick-and-mortar brewery at McHenry Row in Baltimore, The Baltimore Sun reported on April 17.
The company, which tapped its first keg in December 2014, currently contract brews out of Virginia’s Beltway Brewing Company. But now, as competition locally is higher than ever, the time is right for Diamondback to establish its own location, Marshall said.
“Contract brewing is extremely expensive, and while it’s worked to build a brand, it only allows you to grow to a certain extent before you’re capped,” Marshall, a Baldwin native, said.
The 6,800-square-foot location in Locust Point will feature a tasting room, where Diamondback plans to test new types of beer before committing to wide production, Marshall said. Diamondback — which Marshall founded with his friends and Loyola Blakefield classmates Tom Foster and Francis Smith — currently makes six types of beer, including 3:30 Amber Ale and Citranova Session Ale.
Diamondback is currently going through the state and federal permitting processes, Marshall said. The company is “fully confident” the schedule will remain on track to open in the fall, he said.

USA, VA: Stable Craft Brewing set to open the first week of May just outside of Waynesboro
|
Hermitage Hill Farm and Stables, the long Tennessee walking horse barn, has been converted into a tasting room for owners Craig Nargi and his wife, Nikki's newest venture, Stable Craft Brewing — located off Long Meadow Road on Madrid Road just outside of Waynesboro, News Leader reported on April 17.
It's been years in the making, but the vision has now become a reality and is set to open the first week of May.
The farm has been serving as a wedding and events venue for nearly a decade and Nargi felt the addition of a brewery would enhance the space.
"There's a lot of places that are breweries that don't offer event space," he said.
The wedding and event location draws hundreds many weekends and Nargi said he's already started booking well into 2017 and 2018.
The new brewery will offer 16 beers ranging from stouts, IPAs, pale ales and more. Currently, he and his head brewer Christopher Fann, previously of Brothers Craft Brewing in Harrisonburg, are using a 10 barrel system. As the business grows, he can add more. In the future, he hopes to bottle his own, but for now guests can take home a growler of beer.

USA, ID: Clairvoyant Brewing Company to debut in Boise early this summer
|
Three home brewers will take their game to the next level when they debut Clairvoyant Brewing Company in Boise, ID early this summer, Idaho Statesman reported on April 16.
Owners Ryan Kowalczyk, Mike Edmondson and Tim Carter will share the brewing responsibilities at the small brewery in Boise’s up-and-coming West End, an industrial area between Downtown Boise and Garden City. If all goes well, the brewery should be open by the end of June.
Clairvoyant will put out a bevy of handcrafted brews (draft and 22-ounce bottles) using a seven-barrel system. The focus is decidedly on hopped-up IPAs, but beer geeks also can expect to find porter, pale ale, kolsch-style lager and a California common beer.
“At first, we’ll mostly keep the beer in house, keep it simple,” Kowalczyk says. “We plan on expanding it later.”
The trio is working hard to get the industrial-looking space, a former auto repair shop at 2800 W. Idaho St., ready for business. And that means installing bright tanks and other brewing equipment, as well as building a taproom so people can get comfortable while quaffing some hoppy brews.
“It will have a modern feel, with one big room with garage doors that open up,” Kowalczyk says.

USA, CO: Telluridge Brewing adds new equipment to expand output by this summer
|
Patrons of Telluride Brewing Company can look forward to more beer being available in the summer of 2016, The Daily Planet reported on April 15.
The company has added three new 45-barrel fermentation tanks, which will increase its fermentation capacity by about 65 percent. Incorporating limitations later in the production line, this translates to a 45 percent increase in overall capacity.
According to Chris Fish, chief brewing officer and proprietor, this marks a considerable increase.
“Before, we could make about 8,000 barrels of beer; now we could probably do over 12,000 barrels,” Fish said.
A barrel contains 31 gallons of beer, so this means a 124,000-gallon increase in capacity.
Telluride Brewing Company was forged from a partnership between Fish and Tommy Thacher, two close friends who were passionate about beer and dreamed of opening a brewery. Fish, the brewmaster, gained acclaim when his beers won gold and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival.
In May 2011, they teamed up with local real estate broker Brian Gavin and local graphic artist John Lehman to found Telluride Brewing Company. Since then, their brews have enjoyed notable success, including three gold medals for their Face Down Brown.
According to Fish,

USA, AK: Unalaska Brewing Company business plan wins start-up fund in 2016 Aleutian Marketplace Business Plan Competition
|
A local man who hopes to start a craft beer brewery in Unalaska next year got a big financial boost from two big regional organizations. "My life is going to be really busy for a while," said Josh Good, looking forward to opening in spring 2017.
According to a report by Bristol Bay Times, the Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association and The Aleut Corporation announced April 6 that Good, a fifth grade teacher, won the 2016 Aleutian Marketplace Business Plan Competition. He received $20,000 in seed money start-up funds for his Unalaska Brewing Company business plan submission.
"The idea is, it's not a bar," Good said. A craft brewery operates under different rules. Customers are limited to drinking 36 ounces, three 12-ounce drinks, on the premises. The maximum size allowed for take-out purchases is 5 gallons, sold in one-gallon "growler" containers. Closing time is 8 p.m., earlier than traditional bars that stay open past midnight.
Good's written business plan and comprehensive presentation before the independent judging panel addressed how the Unalaska Brewing Company will strengthen commerce in the region by becoming the premier beer brewer and supplier of high quality, locally made craft beer.
The Unalaska Brewing Company will be the first and

World: AB InBev accepts Asahi’s around $2.9 bln binding offer for Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime brands
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev N.V. accepted the around $2.9 billion binding offer from Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. for SABMiller PLC's European premium brands and their related businesses.
The brewing group, which is selling assets in the hope of getting antitrust approval for its roughly $108 billion acquisition of SABMiller, said on April 19 any deal is conditional upon AB InBev closing the SABMiller transaction.
Included in the sale to Japan's Asahi are the Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime brands and related businesses in Italy, the Netherlands, the U.K. and internationally.
Japan's Asahi made its offer for the brands, valued at about $2.9 billion in cash, in February. The sales are part of AB InBev's aim to secure European regulatory approval.

Japan: Japanese brewers increasingly making acquisitions abroad
|
Asahi Group Holdings' latest deal is part of a trend in which major Japanese brewers are increasingly making acquisitions abroad as demand at home ebbs amid a graying population, Nikkei Asian Review reported on April 19.
Asahi previously focused its offshore strategy on Asia, including a business tie-up with China's Tsingtao Brewery. Now Asahi is looking to expand its global footprint, starting with this week's agreement to purchase three premium European beer brands.
Suntory Holdings revealed plans to become a global distributor of whisky, bourbon and other spirits when it acquired U.S.-based distiller Beam in 2014. It is diverting resources to that strategy partly by unwinding a capital tie-up with Tsingtao.
Kirin Holdings is restructuring its Brazilian operations, the center of its overseas strategy, after the business incurred a massive impairment loss. Last year, Kirin purchased a stake in Myanmar Brewery for $560 million, paving the way for brands like its Ichiban beer to flow into the Southeast Asian country's growing market.
The Japanese brewers' overseas strategies are taking shape as they prepare to compete with industry giants on the global stage.

South Korea: Hite Jinro’s bonds see oversubscriptions despite prospects of weak earnings
|
Hite Jinro, a listed beer and soju maker, saw oversubscriptions of its bonds issued earlier this month, despite prospects of weaker-than-expected earnings and financial difficulties on high debt, The Korea Herald reported on April 18.
Demand for Hite Jinro’s A-graded bonds exceeded 100 billion won ($87 million) the company had initially sought to raise to finance its operations and repay its debt.
Its bonds have been oversubscribed by 25 billion won, with institutional investors such as Dongbu Securities, NH Investment & Securities and Shinhan Investment increasing their acquisitions of Hite Jinro bonds during the book building process, according to a regulatory filing.
NH Investment and Shinhan Investment were Hite Jinro’s bond underwriters. Other investors included KTB Investment & Securities, Korea Investment & Securities and Daishin Securities.
Of the 125 billion won it raised through the three-year bonds with an annual yield of 2.6 percent, Hite Jinro said that it will use 50 billion won for debt refinancing and 75 billion won for operations.
Facing high debt, Hite Jinro and its parent holdings company have been liquidating their equities, real estates and subsidiaries to secure cash.
Hite Jinro is currently seeking to sell real estates in Seoul worth about 140 billion won, while Hite Jinro Holdings

UK: Diageo betting big on latest craft lager Hop House 13
|
Diageo is betting big on its latest craft lager innovation with a seven-figure campaign investment for its Guinness branded Hop House 13, The Drum reported on April 19.
The drink is the fourth release under Guinness' 'The Brewers Project', joining Guinness Dublin Porter, Guinness West Indies Porter and Guinness Golden Ale, and the new campaign will see the first TV ad air in Great Britain beginning this month.
Diageo said the push has been designed to drive awareness of the launch and highlight the "quality and craftsmanship" of Hop House 13. The film traces the journey of Hop House 13 Lager from its creation in the pilot brewery at St James Gate, Dublin, to celebrating peoples’ first sip of the drink.
