Venezuela: Empresas Polar warns it will be forced to stop brewing after April 29
|
Venezuelans, already frustrated by repeated power cuts and water restrictions, may soon suffer a new ignominy - a beer shortage, Bloomberg reported on April 21.
Empresas Polar SA, the country’s largest privately-held company and biggest brewer, said on April 20 that it will be forced to stop producing beer because it can’t get the foreign currency it needs to purchase malted barley.
“We haven’t been able to replenish inventory, and we only have malted barley until April 29,” the company said in a statement published on its website. “Because of that, we’re obligated to suspend the production of beer until we get access to the foreign currency necessary to procure the material.”
Venezuela is experiencing the worst recession in decades as the falling price of oil, which accounts for about 95 percent of foreign currency earnings, pushes international reserves to a 13-year low of less than $13 billion. In 2015, the economy contracted by 5.7 percent and is expected to shrink by an additional 8 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund. Inflation is projected to rise to nearly 500 percent.
With increasing power outages and water rationing already complicating President Nicolas Maduro’s hold on power as he battles an opposition-controlled

Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia expects tough year 2016
|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd (Carlsberg Malaysia) expects a tough year in the financial year ending Dec 31, 2016 (FY16), given the slower economic growth in Malaysia and Singapore compounded by the increase in the excise duty, The Edge reported on April 21.
"We see subdued consumer sentiment; spending power will not come up during the year," Carlsberg managing director Henrik Juel Andersen told reporters after the company's annual general meeting on April 21.
He said even though it is a tough year moving forward, there are still opportunities for growth. He added that the brewer will not reduce its investment in its brands.
Andersen also expressed his disappointment towards the excise duty hike on March 1, which he described as "hefty", and favours the importers of foreign beer and liquor over local beer producers.
The new tax regime saw the quantum of a tax increase on locally produced beer, stout, and cider, ranging from 10% to 99%.
"It has forced us to increase our price," he said, adding that this may encourage an illicit trading of beers.
The group posted an increase in net profit by 18.36% to RM74.48 million in its fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2015 (4QFY15) compared to the corresponding quarter in 2014,

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria Plc reports 83% decline in nine-month profit
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc says its nine-month profit has fallen by 83 percent from N5.2 billion in March 2015 to N864 million in March 2016, The Cable reported on April 22.
Nigeria’s second-largest brewer also experienced a revenue drop of 18 percent from N84.75 billion to N69.6 billion.
Just after the announcement of the three-quarter results, Guinness Nigeria shares fell by N1.84 to close business on April 22, to N98, hitting its lowest point in a month.
Though the company did not explain the reasons for the crash in profit, the results show that there was a drastic drop in sales from N45 billion in 2015 to N39 billion in 2016.
The results also revealed that the crash in the company’s profit also means a drastic drop in government revenue in taxes from the brewing giant.
The results show that taxes paid in the time under review fell from N1.92 billion in 2015 to N340 million in 2016, resulting in an appreciable drop in revenue for government.
All these is happening at a time when the Nigerian government is seeking all viable means of increasing revenue and reducing cost of governance, due to a drop in crude oil prices from over $100 to $40 per barrel.

Australia: The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission once again delays decision on AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
|
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has once again delayed its decision on AB InBev’s proposed takeover of SABMiller, The Shout reported on April 22.
The delay comes just after SABMiller issued its financial report for the 2015 financial year, which showed a “strong year and increased momentum”.
Earlier this week the ACCC announced it was delaying its decision on the takeover, “at the request of the merger parties to allow them to provide more information”. The commission went on to say that a new decision date will be provided once it has received all the relevant information from the merger parties.
The ACCC commenced its review of the proposed takeover in January this year and is looking at the impact of the deal on the Australian market. In particular it is looking at the impact of the Australian distribution for Corona, which would return to SABMiller-owned Carlton and United Breweries from Lion, if the deal goes ahead.
AB InBev has already agreed to several deals around the world in order to gain regulatory approval in different markets.
The ACCC delay came as SABMiller issued its full-year financial reports, which showed general profit and volume growth, although the group as a whole was

USA & South Korea: Brooklyn Brewery planning brewing partnership in South Korea
|
New York-based Brooklyn Brewery is heading east.
On the heels of similar ventures in Norway and Finland, Brooklyn President Robin Ottaway announced the company will partner with a group of South Korean entrepreneurs to open a brewery on Jeju Island, South Korea, The Growler reported on April 18.
Similar to their other international ventures, Brooklyn plans to hire a team of brewers who will train and develop recipes under Brewmaster Garrett Oliver at their New York headquarters before heading overseas to Jeju. But the team won’t stay put for too long. According to Ottaway, “there will be a constant circulation of brewers from all four of our teams from Brooklyn, Stockholm, Trondheim, Norway, and Jeju, making up what could be the most interesting and varied craft brewing super group to ever land on the charts.”
The main draw on Jeju Island where Brooklyn is concerned is its “pure, undisturbed ground wells filled with water that has filtered unhurriedly through the volcanic island’s interior, forming a unique water source famed throughout Asia,” Ottaway wrote.

Kenya & Tanzania & Uganda: Heineken loses bid to terminate contract with three African distributors for the second time
|
Dutch brewer Heineken has for the second time lost a bid to terminate a multibillion-shilling contract with African distributors, The Star reported on April 22.
In a ruling on April 21, Justice Eric Ogola said notices issued by the brewer purporting to terminate contracts with Kenya’s Maxam Ltd, Uganda’s Modern Lane Ltd and Tanzania’s Olepasu Ltd lack evidence and goes against their agreement.
The judge said the notice dated January 27, 2015, and letters of appointments filed by the beer maker shall not be executed pending the hearing and determination of the dispute.
He also directed the case to be mentioned on May 3, 2016, for further directions.
The distributors have sued Heineken International BV and its subsidiaries Heineken East Africa Import Company and Heineken Brouwerjen BV, claiming they were not given reasons for the termination.
Heineken has defended its decision to terminate contracts saying it acted within terms of their agreement, and did not have to give any explanations to the firms.
But the local distributors told the court the action was in bad faith.
Through their lawyer, Philip Nyachoti, the companies said they stand to lose millions in their investments considering what they have put in into the business just to ensure compliance of the

Malaysia: Guinness Anchor Bhd becomes Heineken Malaysia Bhd and is expected to raise prices after June
|
Guinness Anchor Bhd (GAB), which received shareholders’ approval to change its name to Heineken Malaysia Bhd on April 20, is expected to raise prices after June, as the brewery could not mitigate all the increase in its operating costs after the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST), The Edge reported on April 21.
“We are looking at ways to possibly increase our price after end of June. But we will keep it as limited as possible,” GAB managing director Hans Essaadi told The Edge Financial Daily after the company’s extraordinary general meeting on April 20.
Over the past 18 months, after the GST kicked in, he said inflation, as measured by the consumer price index, and the company’s operating costs have increased.
“We are looking at ways of mitigating [the increase in costs], so the procurement [of raw materials] with Heineken is a way to look at it. But we cannot mitigate all of it,” he explained.
The company chose the period after June because the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, via the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Regulations 2014, forbids any net profit margin rise for 18 months, starting from Jan 2 last year, to prevent profiteering post-GST. The freeze in

Italy: AB InBev purchases Italian craft brewery Birra del Borgo
|
Italian craft brewery Birra del Borgo announced on April 22 that it has decided to partner with Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev). The partnership will give Birra del Borgo, one of the leading craft brewers in Italy, a unique opportunity to make the necessary investments for expansion while continuing to independently manage its business and define how to grow.
Founder Leonardo Di Vincenzo will continue to lead Birra Del Borgo as CEO of the company, the company said.
Birra Del Borgo was founded by Leonardo Di Vincenzo in Borgorose, a small town in the province of Rieti on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo, in 2005. Leonardo started brewing beer at home for enjoyment while at University studying biochemistry. He traveled frequently throughout Europe to explore the traditional beer styles; getting to know the German and Belgium master brewers was crucial to his education. One of Leonardo’s most formative experiences was brewing at the Starbess brewery in Rome, which later led to his conception of Birra del Borgo. Leonardo’s initial inspiration comes from English and Belgian beers, but he then reinvented the styles to root them in the Italian gastronomy culture.
The brewery currently produces ten beers year round. Other Birra del Borgo
