Australia: Australia’s antitrust regulator clears AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
|
Australia's antitrust regulator on May 5 cleared beer giant Anheuser Busch InBev SA's planned $100 billion takeover of rival SABMiller Plc, saying the deal would not adversely affect the domestic market, Economic Times reported.
"The ACCC considers that the proposed acquisition is unlikely to result in higher beer prices for consumers," Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.
The deal would not hurt competition in Australia because AB Inbev sold its beers in Australia only via distributors, "has only a limited direct company presence in Australia and does not brew beer here," the ACCC said.
The green light from Australia removes another potential antitrust obstacle to the world's No. 1 beer company's deal to buy its nearest rival, one of the biggest corporate takeovers on record. AB InBev has said it expects to complete the purchase by the end of 2016, but still has to secure antitrust clearance in Europe, where both it and its target are headquartered.
AB InBev is the No. 2 beer supplier in Australia, behind Lion Nathan, owned by Japan's Kirin Holdings Co Ltd.
The ACCC said AB InBev has until now had its beers, which include Corona, distributed in

South Africa: South Africa’s competition watchdog granted extra five days to study AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
|
South Africa's competition watchdog was granted on May 5 an extra five days to study Anheuser-Busch InBev's planned $106 billion takeover of SABMiller - a fifth extension that could delay the consumer industry's biggest ever deal, Reuters reported.
"There are several outstanding issues that should be considered. The merging parties are aware of these issues, and hence they have consented to the extension," Competition Commision spokesman Itumeleng Lesofe told Reuters.
The Commission was due to finish its investigation on May 5, after it was granted a 15-day extension. It has already extended the deadline four times.
The new deadline expires on May 12.
Drawn-out scrutiny by the South African regulator could frustrate the Budweiser brewer's goal of completing the acquisition in the second half of 2016 and delay reaping the financial benefits of combining the world's No.1 and 2 brewers.
Lesofe declined to elaborate on the Commission's concerns but said an additional five days might not be enough to address the outstanding issues.
In a bid to fast-track the regulatory probe of the deal, AB InBev, struck a deal with the South African government that included investing $66 million to support small farmers and freeze layoffs for five years.
South Africa has a history of taking

USA: Craft and Mexican beers are US beer industry’s best stories
|
Heading into Cinco de Mayo, craft beer and Mexican beer brands are the U.S. beer industry’s best stories — and Constellation Brands knows that all too well, MarketWatch reported.
Before 2013, however, Constellation Brands Inc. didn’t brew a drop of beer. Sure, its Crown Imports subsidiary has had exclusive U.S. distribution rights to the Grupo Modelo brands — including Corona, Modelo, Negra Modelo, Pacifico and Victoria — since 2007 and had been distributing them in the Western U.S. since buying Chicago-based distributor Barton Beers in 1993. However, Constellation — a Victor, N.Y.-based purveyor of beer, wine and spirits — hadn’t produced a beer of its own until after the Department of Justice ruled that Anheuser-Busch InBev’s NV’s 2013 purchase of Grupo Modelo for $20.1 billion violated U.S. antitrust laws.
Constellation was awarded the U.S. rights to the Grupo Modelo brands and, after sealing a $4.75 billion deal with AB InBev in June 2013, began producing beer for the U.S. market at a facility in Nava, Mexico. By the middle of 2015, with a whole lot of help from Constellation’s beers, Nielsen noted that Mexican beer sales made up 7.8% of all U.S. beer sales by volume. Though their 10.2% growth from the

Ethiopia: Foreign investments in Ethiopia’s beverage industry showing increase
|
Foreign investment in Ethiopia's beverage industry is showing massive increase as multinational companies are increasingly attracted to the industry, according to the Ethiopian Food, Beverage and Pharmaceuticals Industry Development Institute.
The Institute says investment in alcoholic, non-alcoholic beverages and soft drinks as well as stimulants industry have shown a tremendous progress during the past decade.
Institute Beverage Processing Directorate Director Aklilu Kefyalew said multinational beverage companies are continuing to increase their presence in Ethiopia's rapidly growing economy.
"Hence, Ethiopia is attracting more investment as a business and world tourism destination, beverage investment has become the lucrative market for the wine and beer industry."
According to Aklilu, breweries are helping transform Ethiopia's business landscape with alcoholic beverage industries having a lion's share in terms of investment and market coverage.
By the end of the fiscal year, the country's export revenue from the alcoholic beverage industry is expected to hit USD 17 million. Over USD 6 million has already been secured during the past six months, he added.
In line with its policy of encouraging private investment, the Ethiopian government privatized state-owned breweries including Harar and Meta.
The Director said despite the rapid expansion of brewery investment, the inefficient supply capacity of malt factories has been a major constraint
