USA, CA: Russian River Brewing Co. submits plans to build second brewpub in Windsor
|
Russian River Brewing Co., the wildly popular craft brewery that draws more than 300,000 visitors annually to its downtown Santa Rosa brewpub, has submitted plans to build a second brewpub in Windsor, Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports.
Owners Natalie and Vinnie Cilurzo, who have been courted by local cities and developers since they disclosed plans in February to open a second brewpub, said they have agreed to buy a nearly 16-acre vacant parcel at the corner of Mitchell and Conde lanes for the project.
Natalie Cilurzo said she was wary of making a big announcement about the expansion, given that an earlier site near Shiloh Road west of Highway 101 in Windsor fell through because of environmental issues. Escrow on the new site, owned by developer Rich Coombs, is not scheduled to close until June 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.
“Hopefully this is the one,” Cilurzo said. “We have been looking for a long time.”
The project represents another economic coup for Windsor, which will soon have a 34,000-square-foot Oliver’s Market, scheduled to open later this month, next to its Town Green.

USA, WA: Geaux Brewing’s second location scheduled to open in Auburn next October
|
Geaux Brewing has been offering its own tasty, home-brewed beers since it opened in 2013 on Bellevue's Northrup Way.
And when Geaux opens its second locale in Auburn next October, sandwiched between Parker Paints and Cascade Beauty College on East Main Street, not only will it bring a brewhouse but also a New Orleans-themed taproom and a kitchen, Auburn Reporter says.
"We are happy they are coming here. It's a family-friendly restaurant," said Mayor Nancy Backus.
Writing for Washingtonbeerblog, Kendall Jones said that with the move, the establishment's barrel system will grow from four to 20, bulking up Geaux's capacity to slightly more than 1,000 barrels in the first year.
"It was a combo of timing and, frankly, talking with City officials about their revitalization plans for downtown," said owner Jeremy Hubbell. "We will be able open up a production brewery in a high-traffic corridor and be an early anchor as part of the City's revitalization plans."
According to Washingtonbeerblog, Hubbell plans to keep the flagship brewery's tap room but remodel it to seat more customers. And from the new kitchen in Auburn, there'll be food on the expanded menu.

USA, ME: Orono Brewing Co. announces plans to set up shop in downtown Bangor
|
Orono Brewing Co. is pushing south to Bangor, becoming the second brewery in the past month to announce plans to set up shop downtown, Bangor Daily News reported.
OBC co-owners Abe and Heather Furth and Mark Horton have been renovating the narrow, four-story building at 26 State St., converting the upper three floors into a trio of loft-style apartments. Until now, they’ve guarded the secret of their plans for the ground floor.
On May 5, the Furths and Horton, joined by more than 30 friends and supporters inside OBC’s cramped hub in downtown Orono, announced the first-floor retail space would become an OBC tasting room and small-batch test brewery.
“We’re really excited to join downtown Bangor,” Abe Furth said.
The announcement was met with raised glasses and cheers of “More beer!”
26 State St. was built in 1911, in the wake of the Great Bangor Fire, which destroyed much of the downtown. As the city worked to recover, G. Rockwell Youngs, a magician and cigar maker, decided to relocate his business, Bangor Cigar Manufacturing Co., from Harlow Street to State Street, where he built his new factory.

USA, OR: Foundation Brewing Co. starting an expansion this month
|
Foundation Brewing Co. is starting an expansion this month to increase its fermentation capacity, packaging operations and to expand its tasting room, Press Herald reported.
The Portland brewery, located at One Industrial Way in a cluster of craft breweries, is taking over three spaces formerly occupied by Bissell Brothers Brewing. The project will bring Foundation’s total square footage to 7,500 and is paving the way for further expansion in 2017, according to a release from the company.
The larger tasting room will be open more hours than the current one, and the expansion of the fermentation capacity means the brewery can create its more popular beers more frequently.
“The expansion will give us the opportunity to bring out new brands that support our focus on using classic styles as the inspiration for brewing beers that push conventional boundaries,” said Joel Mahaffey, Foundation’s co-founder and head brewer, in the release.
The brewery anticipates the expansion will enable it to can beer more frequently than its current three-week schedule.
The new tasting room should be ready in early to mid summer, and the brewery is not planning any significant tasting room closures during the construction.

USA: Budweiser to be renamed “America” for this summer

Budweiser, owned by Belgium's AB InBev, will rename its beer "America" this summer and alter its labels with images and phrases affiliated with the republic, KTVU San Francisco reported.
The red, white and blue campaign is being launched into a very competitive market already foamy with craft beers, and upon a drinking public bracing itself for a presidential election likely to be unlike any before it.
"We are embarking on what should be the most patriotic summer that this generation has ever seen, with Copa America Centenario being held on U.S. soil for the first time, Team USA competing at the Rio 2016, Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Ricardo Marques, vice president at Budweiser.
The Copa America Centenario is a ceremonial soccer tournament typically held in South America.
The beer had been owned by St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch before it was sold to AB InBev in 2008. The company has confirmed that it is altering the name as part of a limited-edition label change on the front of 12-ounce cans and bottles.

Asheville, North Carolina’s Green Man Brewing is adding Georgia distribution in June, 2016, Beer Street Journal reported.
The brewery has signed distribution contracts with Leon Farmer and Company in Athens and Gainesville and J&L Ventures in Augusta, which will bring their brewery’s lineup to Athens, Augusta, and Gainesville.
Green Man’s flagship beers, IPA, ESB, and Porter will be the first to hit the shelves, with seasonal 6 pack bottles and cans to follow. The brewery’s footprint currently includes North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida.

Germany: Beer retailers fined for colluding with AB InBev in price-fixing scheme
|
German beer retailers have been slapped with big fines after being caught colluding with beer giant AB InBev in a price-fixing scheme, Eater reported on May 9.
According to the Wall Street Journal, "Germany's Federal Cartel Office has fined several retailers a combined total of €90.5 million ($103.2 million)" over the price-fixing scandal. WSJ reports that the news comes at an especially embarrassing time for the country, which is currently celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reinheitsgebot, or beer purity law, which is meant to protect consumers from inflated beer prices.
The retailers were found to have colluded with the German subsidiary of AB InBev to fix beer prices — specifically for its Beck's, Hasseröder and Franziskaner brands — between 2006 and 2009. AB InBev itself was not fined, as its cooperation helped authorities in the inquiry.
The probe also fined one German retailer for fixing the price of Haribo candy and another for fixing the price of coffee.
This isn't the first time AB InBev has faced criticism over its "German" beers recently. Last year, the company was paid out millions of dollars following a class-action lawsuit claiming it tricked consumers into thinking Beck's, which has been made in St. Louis since 2012,

Nigeria Breweries Plc has disclosed that despite tough operating environment, it paid N16 billion as tax to the Federal Government for the financial year 2015 and also created 4,000 direct jobs. It further disclosed that the beer industry in the country grew by one percent in 2015, while beer consumption per person stood at 11 litres. Mr. Nicolaas Vervelde, Managing Director/CEO, announced this during the company's Pre-AGM Media briefing held in Lagos last weekend, AllAfrica.com reported on May 9.
According to him " Employment-wise, the company has 4,000 Nigerians on its payrolls across its 11 beer plants and two malt production plants across the country while 280,000 people have been indirectly employed by its transporters, distributors and other ancillary businesses. Vervelde said that the slow growth in the economy in terms of lower oil prices, fall in the value of the Naira, scarcity of foreign exchange , low purchasing power of consumers are some of the economic indices that affected the industry like other businesses in the country.

Ghana: Guinness Ghana Breweries launches GHS180 mln renounceable rights issue
|
Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited ("GGBL"), Ghana’s leading beverage company, has launched a GHS180 million renounceable rights issue in order to retire part of its debt, optimise its capital structure and improve its financial and operational flexibility.
The objective of the transaction is to return GGBL to an optimal capital structure, reduce the interest burden on GGBL, provide GGBL with the financial flexibility to invest in future value-creating opportunities and return GGBL to a position where it can pay dividends.
Following the Rights Issue of GHS 70,000,000 in November 2011, the company successfully reduced its outstanding net debt from GHS 104,907,000 as at June 2011 to GHS 5,626,000 as at June 2012.
However, over the past 3 years, the GGBL has invested significantly in capital expenditure including increasing the capacity of the Kumasi brewery, installing spirits blending and bottling capability and redesigning the Malta Guinness bottle. These operational initiatives have been funded primarily by debt.
