50 WAYS OF GREEN

ABSTRACT
What a great name for a presentation! From a brewery manufacturer's point of view, possibilities on how to introduce more hops into the brewing process were presented. This presentation covered brewing performance in terms of hop extraction and reproducibility using a hop bag and the hop slurry technology, and then the aspects of removing the green gold (hops) again.

Brewery news Japan & USA: Asahi Group Holdings pursuing deals in the US to boost distribution of its Super Dry beer
Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., the Japanese brewer that’s buying European brands from Anheuser-Busch InBev NV worth $2.9 billion, is now pursuing deals in the U.S. that would help boost distribution of its Super Dry beer in the world’s largest economy, Bloomberg reported on May 18.

Tokyo-based Asahi is willing to spend 400 billion yen ($3.7 billion) starting next year, which includes raising debt and 100 billion yen in cash, on further acquisitions, President Akiyoshi Koji said in an interview on May 18. The company is mainly seeking overseas investments to strengthen its alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage businesses, said Koji.

AB InBev last month accepted Asahi’s offer to buy the Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime beer brands as the European brewer seeks to win regulatory approval for the purchase of SABMiller Plc. For Asahi, completing the biggest deal in its history would help the Japanese brewer expand abroad amid falling domestic beer consumption and changing tastes.

“There’s huge potential that our Super Dry beer will gain popularity in the U.S.,” said Koji, pointing to the country’s growth in popularity of craft beers and diversified food culture. “The key is how to boost distribution power - then we can think of bringing our whisky, Shochu spirit ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Caboose Brewing planning second brewery location in Vienna, VA
Caboose Brewing Company has revealed plans to open the brewery’s second location at the shopping neighborhood. To be located on the southwest corner of Lee Highway and Eskridge Road in Vienna, VA, Caboose will repurpose a 6,000 square-foot storage facility into a brewery, Brewbound.com reported.

“Both my fellow owner Tim McLaughlin and I have been long-term Fairfax residents, and are excited about growing our business in in Northern Virginia,” Caboose co-owner Matt Greer said.

Pending approval from Fairfax County, the brewery may offer public tastings and a beer garden. Construction is set to begin in the fall with an opening planned for early 2017.

“We are excited to work with Caboose to create a community gathering space that will benefit and complement the existing Mosaic neighborhood,” said Reed Kracke, Vice President of Development for EDENS.

Caboose Brewing Company’s first location opened in Vienna, Va. in 2015, and a Mosaic location in Fairfax, Va., is currently in the works.

Brewery news USA, WI: Vintage Brewing Co. finalizing plans to begin construction of new brewpub in Sauk City
Vintage Brewing Co. is finalizing plans to begin construction this summer on a massive brewpub and banquet facility along the Wisconsin River in Sauk City, Madison.com reported.

No sale has been finalized, but village officials have tentatively agreed to sell the Madison company a vacant piece of land at the corner of Water and Polk streets, where plans call for a combined 27,000 square feet of brewing, restaurant and rooftop space across three levels.

Trent Kraemer, who owns Vintage along with his wife, Brittany, cousins Scott and Bryan Manning, uncle Mark Kraemer, and family friend Mike Bridges, said the expansive facility will dramatically increase the company’s brewing capacity and will allow it to host weddings and other banquet-type events.

“It’s a pretty large undertaking for us,” Kraemer said. “We’re really going to try to make it into a regional destination with the architecture and the scope of what we can do. It’s got beautiful views.”

The land that will be used for the project was purchased by the village years ago to hold for future development.

In the interim, village officials had moved a pair of historic buildings onto the property, but village president James Anderson said those buildings were recently moved to make way ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Junction Craft Brewing secures lease for Toronto location
One of Toronto's lost architectural gems is set to be brought back to life in the form of a new brewery. Junction Craft Brewing announced on May 16 that it has secured a lease for 150 Symes Rd., a former incinerator built in 1934 under the direction of public works commissioner R.C. Harris.

It's a glorious structure that was last used as a waste transfer station and has since fallen into disuse. At 16, 000 square feet, it's an amazing site for a brewery that leaves plenty of room beyond the brewing infrastructure.

"We're very excited to be up and running there by early next year," said President Tom Paterson. "We'll be opening a facility that, in addition to a new 25hL brewhouse and increased production and distribution capabilities, will offer brewery tours, an event space, and an expanded tap room and retail bottle shop."

Bellwoods Brewery made headlines with their plans to set up operations in the former Hamilton Gears factory at Dovercourt and Dupont, and this looks every bit as impressive. The plan is to open in early 2017 after restorations efforts are complete at the building.

Brewery news USA, NY: Brooklyn Brewery building a new brewery
In a move that will both boost food and beverage manufacturing and create greater public access to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation announced on May 16 that Brooklyn Brewery is expanding its operations and building a new brewery, headquarters and rooftop restaurant and beer garden at the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s Building 77, Brooklyn Daily Eagle said.

The de Blasio administration has invested more than $100 million to transform Building 77 into a 1 million-square-foot manufacturing center. Brooklyn Brewery will employ 124 people at the Yard, with the long-term goal of creating an additional 100 jobs.

“Brooklyn Brewery is a welcome addition to the Yard’s growing roster, bringing along with it more than a hundred quality jobs and some of the best brews our city has to offer,” said de Blasio.

Brooklyn Brewery, which opened its first brewery in Williamsburg 20 years ago, will lease a total of 75,000 square feet in the building, which is now undergoing a $185 million redevelopment. It joins anchor tenant Russ & Daughters in the ground-floor food manufacturing hub, as well as other food manufacturers including chocolate maker Mast Brothers and coffee maker Brooklyn Roasting ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Northern Maine Brewing Co. scheduled to open in Caribou by June
There’s something new brewing in Aroostook County. The opening of the first craft brewery in Caribou is on tap, and the beer is scheduled to pour in mid-June, Bangor Daily News reported on May 16.

Northern Maine Brewing Co. will be the only craft brewery in the county, and with planned beers including the stout “Skidder Grease” and the lighter IPA “Northern Maine Light,” those behind the venture say the goal is to keep the flavors, ambiance and ingredients as local as possible.

“Is Aroostook County ready for a craft beer pub?” brewery co-investor and spokesman Joe Sleeper said. “Absolutely.”

Carpenters, painters, plumbers and electricians were hard at work on the building located across from the Caribou Inn and Convention Center earlier this month, putting the finishing touches on the bar and restaurant areas.

In the kitchen, newly hired executive chef Joseph Gervais was tiling and grouting the floor.

Gervais and Sleeper are looking forward to introducing area residents to small-batch beers.

“People’s take on craft beer is that they are really strong and dark or really ‘hoppy’ tasting,” Gervais said. “But really, what we are doing is brewing small batches using local ingredients to make a great tasting beer.”

Sleeper said using those local ingredients will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Asheville ready to welcome two new craft breweries
Asheville's booming craft beer scene will soon have two new players - one just north of downtown, the other on the south side, Asheville Citizen-Times reported.

Habitat Brewing is building at 174 Broadway St., next to Moog Music, while the pizzeria-brewery called Fahrenheit 828 will locate at 17 Lee St., in South Asheville. The new breweries will push the Asheville-Buncombe total to 26 with more than 50 around the mountains.

Habitat is now finishing its build-out in a historic downtown building, said Matt Addis, who is partnered in the project with Jonathan Myers. "Hopefully we will open in July," said Addis. Habitat will follow the path set by many local breweries, opening first as a taproom with guest beers while awaiting a federal brewing permit. The brewery will use a two-barrel system to start. "We're talking with manufacturers to get something custom-built," Addis said. He'd eventually like to have a five to seven barrel brew house.

Habitat ran into a naming issue, a common challenge with more than 3,700 breweries and nearly 8,400 wineries nationwide. "There is a winery that has habitat on one label," Addis said. "We are working with them" to use the name, he said. "We are confident that we ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Jarfly Brewing installs tanks in its newly renovated facility in Somerset
Somerset’s first craft brewery celebrated the beginning of American Craft Beer Week on May 15 with the installation of tanks in its newly renovated facility on the town’s fountain square, The Lane Report said.

Jarfly Brewing owners and Somerset residents Daniel Stroud and Delaney Stephens, who have been working since fall 2015 to remodel the former Goldenberg Furniture building on West Mount Vernon Street, hope to open their brewery and taproom to the public by mid-summer. With tanks installed, they can soon begin brewing in the new location.

Stroud and Stephens will introduce three craft beers when Jarfly Brewing opens this summer — a dry-hopped session IPA, a coffee stout infused with locally roasted coffee, and a pre-prohibition style Kentucky Common ale. Seasonal and experimental brews will also be a focus during the brewery’s first year. And though Jarfly beer will only be sold in the taproom initially, patrons will be able to purchase crowlers — 32-ounce, recyclable aluminum cans — to take home.

Stroud began brewing beer in 2005 as a pastime. Upon meeting Stephens, the two discovered a common and deep appreciation for beer that started a conversation about opening a craft brewery. They began brewing together in 2014 and researching ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI & WI: Short’s Brewing adds Wisconsin to its growing distribution network
Short’s Brewing Co. has added Wisconsin to its growing distribution network for its craft beer and Starcut Ciders brand, MiBiz reported on May 14.

The Bellair-based craft brewery partnered with the Wisconsin Beverage Network and General Beverage to distribute its flagship brands including Huma Lupa Licious, Soft Parade and others, as well as specialty beers in bottles and kegs.

The brewery will also distribute several brands of its Starcut Ciders in the state, according to a statement.

While Short’s once used the phrase “Michigan only, Michigan forever,” to emphasize its decision to only distribute in the state, the brewery has since moved into other states including Illinois, Pennsylvania and now Wisconsin.

The company chose to distribute outside the state to absorb excess production capacity of between 10,000 barrels and 12,000 barrels a year and to escape what it saw as a saturated Michigan craft beer market, according to a previous MiBiz report.

Following its latest move into Wisconsin, Short’s does not plan on increasing distribution to other states, according to the statement.

Brewery news USA, AK & OH: Alaskan Brewing to expand distribution to Ohio
Alaska’s largest brewery announced on May 13 that it will expand its distribution to the Buckeye State this summer, making Ohio the 18th state to offer Alaskan Brewing products, Juneau Empire reported.

In an email, Alaskan said it has partnered with Columbus Distributing, Heidelberg Distributing, House of La Rose, Matesich Distributing and R.L. Lipton Distributing to get beer to bars, package stores and other retailers.

It is the first new state to offer Alaskan products since Michigan and North Dakota in 2014.

Ohio will be the farthest Alaskan has spread its reach; all 17 other states are closer to Alaska.

Brewery news Indonesia: PT Delta Djakarta brewery expresses anxiety over anticipated approval of controversial alcohol prohibition bill
Publicly listed beer manufacturer PT Delta Djakarta has expressed anxiety over the anticipated approval of a controversial alcohol prohibition bill, saying that the move would likely hamper its sales after slowly recovering from a rough 2015, Jakarta Post reported on May 18.

Last year, all 10 party factions of the House agreed to continue deliberations on the prohibition of alcohol. Legislators who support the bill have argued that Indonesia needs a stronger legal standing to control the production and consumption of alcohol.

The bill, sponsored by the United Development Party (PPP) and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), political organizations that are Islamist in orientation, has become one of the priority bills in this year’s National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).

The bill, reminiscent of the US’ prohibition efforts in the 1920s, would outlaw the production, distribution and sale of beverages with more than a 1 percent alcohol content.

Speaking to reporters on May 17, Delta Djakarta finance director Alan V. Fernandez said the company hoped the alcohol bill, if passed, would not include many new restrictions.

If this eventuates, the firm — local producer of various beer brands, like Anker, Carlsberg and San Miguel — will aim for a 10 percent sales increase for this year.

Brewery news Latin America: Diageo’s Latin America sales to be hit by accounting error this year
Diageo PLC’s Latin America sales for fiscal 2016 will be hit by an accounting error the spirits giant made over sales of its high-end tequila brand Don Julio last year, the company disclosed on May 16.

Diageo’s sales in Latin America will take a 2% hit in the current fiscal year ending June 30 from sales that the company accidentally double booked, Diageo’s Latin America and Caribbean president Alberto Gavazzi said on a conference call with analysts.

Diageo’s Mexico unit sold some bottles of Don Julio to the company’s U.S. unit that it recorded as an external sale. The company’s U.S. unit then sold on those bottles and recorded that as a separate sale.

Diageo logged net sales of £1.03 billion ($1.48 billion) in Latin America and the Caribbean last year. Diageo said the accounting error’s impact amounts to roughly £15.1 million.

Diageo acquired the remainder of Don Julio that it didn’t already own from Jose Cuervo in 2015 and hence the accounting adjustment didn’t require Diageo to restate so-called “organic sales,” which strip out currency effects and acquisitions, for fiscal 2015 according to a spokeswoman. The error was made during the integration of Don Julio into Diageo, she added. However the reported sales ...More info on site

Brewery news Venezuela: President threatens to throw Empresas Polar owners in jail if they don’t start brewing again
Venezuela is facing a dire beer shortage, in large part thanks to the economic upheaval the country is currently facing. Just last month, the largest food and beer distributor, Empresas Polar, closed its last beer production facility. And that’s a problem. Because in good times, and even more so in bad, people turn to alcohol. It’s one of the few industries that’s not dramatically impacted by an economy’s downturn. The people might drink different products depending on whether it’s boom time or bust, but they’ll still drink. But if there’s nothing available to imbibe with, the country has a serious problem on its hands, VinePair reported on May 16.

As the economic upheaval has gotten worse, opposition leader Henrique Capriles has declared, “Venezuela is a bomb that could explode at any moment.”

And that’s exactly why Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro threatened on May 14 that either the beer factories start producing again, or he’ll take them over and throw the owners in jail – never mind that the opposition accuses both Maduro and his predecessor Hugo Chavez of mismanaging the economy so badly that they placed the country in this position in the first place.

According to Maduro, the businesses want to intensify ...More info on site

Brewery news Georgia: Heineken, Amstel and Krusovice to be produced locally at a specially built plant
The Teliani Valley’s subsidiary company Global Beer Georgia has begun construction of a beer factory with the aim of producing world famous beer brands – Heineken, Amstel and Krusovice, Georgia Today reported on May 16.

The official representatives of Heineken, Amstel and Heineken Ceska Republika have already signed the contract and the factory’s construction should start in May this year.

The first batch of locally produced world beer is expected to be on the supermarket shelves in December 2016. The company claims that their prices will be lower than the currently imported Heineken, Amstel and Krusovice, creating new opportunities for the company and making it more competitive.

Global Beer Georgia will be the exclusive producer of these three beer brands in Georgia. Moreover, it will also sell the brands in Azerbaijan and Armenia.

According to preliminary calculations, the total cost of the project without VAT is USD 37 million.
