50 WAYS OF GREEN

ABSTRACT
What a great name for a presentation! From a brewery manufacturer's point of view, possibilities on how to introduce more hops into the brewing process were presented. This presentation covered brewing performance in terms of hop extraction and reproducibility using a hop bag and the hop slurry technology, and then the aspects of removing the green gold (hops) again.

Becher, T.: 50 ways of green, oral presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference, April 2016, Ghent.

Brewery news EU: AB InBev set to win conditional EU approval for its takeover of SABMiller - sources
Brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev is set to win conditional EU approval for its $100 billion-plus takeover of SABMiller after agreeing to substantial asset sales, Reuters reported on May 20 citing three people familiar with the matter.

The Belgium-based maker of Budweiser and Stella Artois is looking to boost its presence in Africa and Latin American countries to offset weaker markets such as the United States, where drinkers are shunning mainstream lagers in favor of craft brews and cocktails.

The takeover, one of the biggest in the corporate world, will give AB InBev a third of the global beer market.

AB InBev, already the biggest brewer in the world, managed to allay EU competition concerns by agreeing to sell SABMiller's Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime beer brands to Asahi Group Holdings Ltd, the people said.

Last month, the company also announced plans to sell SABMiller's business in Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia to appease lingering worries from the European Commission.

The Commission and Ab InBev declined to comment.

The EU competition enforcer is scheduled to decide on the deal by May 24. Australian and South African authorities have already given the green light.

AB InBev is also selling SABMiller's stake in U.S. joint venture MillerCoors to Molson Coors ...More info on site

Brewery news Latvia: Beer production down 16% in the first quarter of this year
In the first quarter of 2016, beer production in Latvia dropped 16 per cent year-on-year to 0.15 mln hl, the Excise Goods Administration of the Latvian State Revenue Service (VID) reported on May 19.

Beer imports in the first three months of this year were down 5.52 per cent from the respective period in 2015 to 0.17 mln hl.

Altogether 0.29 mln hl of beer were released for consumption in Latvia between January and March this year, this was a 8.49 per cent reduction from the same period in 2015. In the first quarter of 2016, Latvia exported 18.17 thousand hl of beer, which was a 10.92 per cent decline from January to March 2015. The Latvian State Revenue Service said that beer production in Latvia in 2014 declined 34 per cent year-on-year because Aldaris, a leading Latvian brewery, moved part of its production outside Latvia and significantly reduced its local output.

0.86 mln hl of beer were produced in Latvia in 2015, which is a 12 per cent decline from 2014. Despite the slump, potential co-operation partners in China and Armenia have voiced interest in the products of Latvia’s Bauskas Alus brewery.

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors acquires minority stake in Brasseur de Montréal craft brewery
Molson Coors's Canadian craft division has purchased a minority stake in craft brewer Brasseur de Montréal, TVA Nouvelles reported on May 17.

Six Pintes, Molson Coors’ craft division, was created in 2011. The purchase of a stake in Brasseur de Montréal is its first partnership in Quebec. Previously the division had made acquisition of shares in Creemore brewery (Ontario) and Granville Island (British Columbia).

Brasseur de Montréal owners said the partnership will give their beers access to Molson’s huge distribution network in the country while the brewery will still remain independent.

Brewery news USA: AB InBev brings in Estrella Jalisco with demand for Mexican beers on the rise
Anheuser-Busch InBev is bringing Estrella Jalisco across the border to the U.S. with demand for Mexican beers on the rise, Seeking Alpha reported on May 20.

The brewer acquired Estrella in the Grupo Modelo deal.

Estrella fills in a bit of a gap in AB InBev's portfolio with Corona out its control in the U.S. due to a DOJ agreement. The company is advertising the brand widely, including on Spanish-language TV networks.

Early reports on demand for the brand have been very encouraging, AB InBev said.

Brewery news Sri Lanka: Lion Brewery (Ceylon) forced to halt brewing in Biyagama because of floods
Floods caused by heavy rain in Sri Lanka in the past several days have halted production at Lion Brewery (Ceylon), the company said in a stock exchange filing on May 20.

Its factory at Biyagama has been affected by flood waters from the Kelani River and production has been halted. “Management will assess the impact to the factory once the water recedes and will inform shareholders of the status accordingly,” the statement said. The company is trying to bring operations back to normal as soon as possible, it said.

Barley news Canada: Barley use forecast to increase by 11% this season
For 2015-16, Canada’s total domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 11% to 6.1 mln tonnes which is below the previous five-year average. The modest usage increase is due to increased feed use as industrial use remains unchanged, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported in May.

Barley exports are forecast to decrease by 17% to 2.05 mln tonnes due to lower world feed barley trade and trend malt barley demand.

Barley carry-out stocks are expected to increase by 15% to 1.4 mln tonnes, or slightly higher than the previous five-year average.

Canadian barley stocks are expected to increase by 12% from 2014-15. The bulk of increase is in the Praire Provinces. Overall, total Canadian barley stocks are estimated to be 4% higher than the previous five-year average.

For 2016-17, barley-seeded area is forecast to increase by 4% from 2015-16, to 2.743 mln ha, due to good barley values and near steady values for malt barley.

Production is forecast to increase by 3% to 8.5 mln tonnes due to the higher area and a forecast for average yields.

Due to slightly higher production and higher carry-in stocks, supply is expected to increase by 5% to 9.95 mln tonnes. Total domestic use is forecast ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Barley export declines in March 2016
According to preliminary data, in March 2016 Russia exported 301.8 thousand tonnes of barley which was much less than the 721.4 thousand tonnes exported in March 2015, UkrAgroConsult reported.

Since the beginning of the season barley exports from Russia have dropped by 13% - to 3.9 mln tonnes. Saudi Arabia remained the main importer of Russian barley with 55% of the total exports in this season. In general, the key Russian barley markets remained the same as in last season. Export to such Arab countries as Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait increased.
