INSPIRATION FOR HOPPING REGIMES

ABSTRACT
Very often, highly hop intensive beers create a high bitterness since a lot of craft brewers maximize the hop addition throughout the whole brewing process which contributes to both bittering and aroma. However, it is possible to have a strong hop aroma and flavor together with a low bitterness. This approach was exploited by this German research team monitoring bitter and aroma compounds throughout the process.

Forster, A.: special beers with unusual hopping, oral presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference, April 2016, Ghent.

Brewery news South Africa: The South African Reserve Bank approves AB InBev’s proposed combination with SABMiller
Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV on May 25 said the South African Reserve Bank has approved its proposed combination with London-listed SABMiller PLC.

The approval comes soon after the European Commission's approval of the deal, which was granted after it agreed to sell some of its businesses.

"Approval from the SARB represents an important milestone in the process of securing regulatory clearance for the transaction in South Africa," said AB InBev.

All regulatory approvals for the deal should be obtained to allow the GBP71.00 billion deal to be completed in the second half of this year.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: The Czech Republic’s Plzeňský Prazdroj up for sale among other SABMiller assets
Czech brewing jewel Plzeňský Prazdroj is going up for sale. That’s the result of the go ahead from the European Commission to the massive worldwide beer deal under which global market leader InBev acquires its nearest rival SABMiller. Plzeňský Prazdroj has been in the hands of South Africa’s SAB since 1999, Radio Prague reported on May 26.

Competition watchdogs in Brussels have in fact ordered InBev to offload almost all of SABMiller’s European portfolio after looking aghast at the possible impact on the market and the likelihood that curbed competition would force up beer prices.

InBev had initially wanted to hold onto its Czech and Central European assets but they came onto the table when the European Commission maintained that its initial list of concessions were insufficient.

Plzeňský Prazdroj accounts for around a third of beer sales on the Czech market. The brand and brewery was SABMiller’s most profitable in Central Europe and had built up strong export sales across the continent. Operating profit for 2015 came to 183 million euros.

According to industry observers, the Czech assets could be sold as part of a Central European package or on their own. InBev has some time to play with, it is due to take ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Competition Commission unlikely to made decision on AB InBev, SABMiller merger this week
South Africa’s Competition Commission is unlikely to make a decision on whether to recommend Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s takeover of SABMiller Plc this week, further extending the regulatory process, Bloomberg reported on May 25 citing a person familiar with the situation.

The antitrust body is continuing with the investigation into the $106 billion deal, said the person, who asked not to be named as the deliberations are private. There is a possibility of completing the probe this week, but it’s very small, the person said. The Competition Commission has missed at least four earlier deadlines to complete its probe into the takeover of SABMiller, which traces its roots to Johannesburg.

AB InBev is seeking regulatory approval around the world to combine with SABMiller, creating the world’s largest brewer. The maker of Budweiser and Stella Artois won support from the European Union on May 24 after agreeing to offload SABMiller brands including Peroni and Grolsch.

Brewery news Indonesia: Beer allowed in Jakarta’s minimarts again
Good news for those who love beer and live in Jakarta. About one year after Indonesia announced it had banned sales of alcoholic beverages in minimarkets and kiosks - a move conducted to "protect the morals and culture of Indonesian society" - Jakarta Governor Basuki Purnama Tjahja (Ahok) said alcoholic beverages with alcohol content up to five percent (which includes beer) will again be available in the capital city's minimarkets, the small retailers that have mushroomed across the city streets, Indonesia Investments reported on May 26.

However, the ban (stipulated by Trade Regulation No. 06/M-DAG/PER/1/2015 on the Control and Supervision of Procurement, Distribution, and Sale of Alcoholic Beverages) remains in place in all other parts of the country, Indonesian Trade Minister Thomas Lembong confirmed. In April 2015 the Indonesian government implemented the ban on sales of alcoholic beverages in all minimarkets and kiosks. As these small retailers have mushroomed across Indonesia's urban regions, it had become very easy - including for schoolchildren - to purchase a light alcoholic beverage. However, in the larger (and licensed) supermarkets and hypermarkets alcoholic drinks remained available. But, as the number of these larger supermarkets is limited, it became much more difficult to purchase alcoholic beverages ...More info on site

WhiskyWhisky News Whisky

Whisky news The Philippines: Ginebra San Miguel Inc. in talks with three foreign hard liquor producers for possible acquisitions
Ginebra San Miguel Inc. is in talks with three foreign hard liquor producers for possible overseas acquisitions or investments, Manila Bulletin reported on May 26.

In an interview, San Miguel Corp. (SMC) president Ramon S. Ang said “there are lots of opportunities to acquire. Most (target acquisitions) are international operations. We are talking to three who are into the hard liquor business.”

“There are brokers handling the acquisition deals for hard liquor,” said Ang pointing out that San Miguel is interested in pursuing every opportunity to expand its businesses given its strong balance sheet.

He explained that there is also an element of luck in acquisitions but, “if you notice we have a lot of acquisitions for the last eight years, we have a success rate of 80 percent. I hope we will be lucky again with these planned acquisitions.”

Meanwhile, Ang said GSMI is poised to regain leadership in the local hard liquor industry. Based on the Nielsen Retail Audit, the company already reclaimed leadership in North Luzon and South Luzon as of March 2016.

Nielsen’s annual Retail Audit also showed that GSMI recorded the fastest growth in market share among the country’s major liquor players in 2015.
