LEARNING FROM WINE AROMA RESEARCH
ABSTRACT
Hops for beer is like grapes for wine, so why not learn something
about hops from wine researchers? This French research team is
looking into the potential and contribution of sulfur related aroma
compounds present in many hop varieties. They found that there
is a signficant potential for the varieties studied for precursors
leading to 4MMP, 3MH and 3MHA. With these initial findings
they have three questions they want to follow with in the future:
1) What is the impact of process transformation of hops on aroma
potential? 2) What is the impact of fermentation to release thiols?
and 3) Are there other sources for thiols in beer? I see exciting
times for hops aroma research coming!
Roland, A.: Characterization of the thiol aroma potential of different hop varieties,
oral presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference, April 2016, Ghent.

USA: Justice Department poised to approve AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller - sources
|
The U.S. Justice Department is poised to approve Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s takeover of SABMiller Plc in an agreement that may include measures to keep the beer behemoth from edging craft brewers from shelves, Bloomberg reported on June 1, citing people familiar with the matter.
U.S. clearance of the $107 billion combination is on track for later this month, according to three people familiar with the process. The accord could include limits on the combined company’s ownership of distributors, said one of the people.
U.S. antitrust approval would bring the maker of Budweiser a step closer to completing the industry’s biggest merger ever and redraw control of the global beer market. The merged company will be followed by Heineken NV and Molson Coors Brewing Co. in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots by market capitalization. Following divestitures to win regulatory approvals, the deal will keep Budweiser, Beck’s and Stella Artois under AB InBev’s roof, while selling brands including Miller in the U.S. and Peroni and Pilsner Urquell in Europe.
The transaction, which was agreed to in November 2015 in a bid to boost sales by gaining access to emerging markets, has already won antitrust approval in more than a dozen jurisdictions, including the

New Zealand: Lion New Zealand buys craft brewery Panhead Custom Ales
|
Lion - Beer, Spirits and Wine (NZ), New Zealand's biggest beer maker, has agreed to buy Panhead Custom Ales from the family of founder Mike Neilson, its second such purchase of a popular craft brewer after the acquisition of Dunedin-based Emerson's Brewing Co in 2012, New Zealand Herald reported on May 27.
No price was disclosed for Upper Hutt-based Panhead, the trading name of the Neilson family's Brew Strong Ltd. As with the Emerson's purchase, Panhead's Neilson is to stay on with the business, putting his award-winning beers into a Lion stable that includes the Speight's, Lion, Steinlager and Mac's brands. Lion said Josh Drake, a former financial consultant, will be general manager of Panhead, a position he has held for two months, according to his LinkedIn page.
The acquisition underlines the growing popularity of craft beers in a market where overall consumption is declining. An ANZ Bank report on the sector, published last year, said beer sales in New Zealand had fallen 12 percent since 2008, yet off-premise craft beer sales had risen 42 percent between 2014 and 2015 and now had 13 percent of the market.
Lion also owns the Mac's brand beers, having acquired the rights from Nelson's McCashin's Brewery

Cameroon: Beer sales total 6.6 mln hl last year
|
Total beer sales, including imported brands, in Cameroon amounted to 6.6 mln hl last year, Journal du Cameroun reported on May 31.
According to a report by the nation’s largest brewer, Société anonyme des brasseries du Cameroun (SABC), its market share was 78% last year, followed by Guinness’ 14.4% and Union camerounaise de brasseries’ 7.2%.
SABC’s sales last year totalled 5.1 mln hl, which represents a decline of 5.7% on 2014. The company blamed the decline on a hike in excise duties and higher competition.

India: Vijay Mallya likely to step down as chairman of United Breweries
|
Vijay Mallya is likely to step down as chairman of United Breweries, being automatically disqualified in line with the market regulator's notification barring wilful defaulters from holding board positions in listed companies. Controlling stakeholder Heineken and the board of directors will meet soon in this regard to identify a successor, Economic Times reported on May 27 citing people aware of the matter.
According to the 2009 shareholder agreement between Mallya and Heineken, the former has the right to choose his successor. While Mallya has been vocal about his intention to repay dues to banks, he will be unable to challenge the wilful defaulter tag as of now. "Yes, this definitely debars Mallya as chairman. We will obviously have to discuss this and Heineken will discuss this with Mallya as a shareholder," said a UB director. "Some of our board members are travelling, so we will take a call as soon as possible."
This also means Mallya would have to step down as chairman of Bayer CropScience, which is said to have identified a successor in anticipation of the development, said executives aware of the matter. Banks are seeking more than Rs 9,000 crore in dues stemming from loans made to
