LEARNING FROM WINE AROMA RESEARCH
ABSTRACT
Hops for beer is like grapes for wine, so why not learn something
about hops from wine researchers? This French research team is
looking into the potential and contribution of sulfur related aroma
compounds present in many hop varieties. They found that there
is a signficant potential for the varieties studied for precursors
leading to 4MMP, 3MH and 3MHA. With these initial findings
they have three questions they want to follow with in the future:
1) What is the impact of process transformation of hops on aroma
potential? 2) What is the impact of fermentation to release thiols?
and 3) Are there other sources for thiols in beer? I see exciting
times for hops aroma research coming!
Roland, A.: Characterization of the thiol aroma potential of different hop varieties,
oral presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference, April 2016, Ghent.

Vietnam: Sale of state’s share in Sabeco not put into discussion at latest shareholders’ meeting
|
ThaiBev, the conglomerate owned by Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, has been chasing Sabeco’s stakes for a few years. More than 10 investors have registered to buy Sabeco’s shares. Why are investors so interested in the Vietnamese beer manufacturer?
According to VietnamNetBridge, Sabeco is the largest brewery in the Vietnamese market, dominating the middle-class beer market segment.
Sabeco has been a joint stock company for eight years, after equitization. However, the state now still holds 89.95 percent of shares, while Heineken holds 5 percent.
Therefore, the joint stock company, by nature, is still a state-owned enterprise. The chairs of the company’s board of directors and other key positions are appointed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT).
Sabeco’s managers suggested selling stakes in two campaigns, about 20-30 percent of stakes each. The second campaign will come one year after the first.
Meanwhile, MOIT has recently submitted to the government the plan to sell Sabeco stakes, to reduce the state’s ownership ratio from 89.59 percent to 36 percent.
This means that the new investors will have opportunities to hold controlling stakes in the company.
However, to many people’s surprise, the plan to withdraw the state’s capital and list shares on the bourse was not put into discussion

UK: Molson Coors-owned Staropramen releases new 4% ABV pilsner Pravha
|
Molson Coors-owned Staropramen has released a new light 4% ABV pilsner for the on-trade called Pravha, which has been revealed to the Publican’s Morning Advertiser first.
The crisp, light and refreshing pilsner will be exclusively available on draught to the on-trade from June 2.
Two specially selected malts and three Czech hops are used in the brewing of the premium beer, which is said to offer a twist on the classic pilsner, and responds to an increase in consumer demand for “brews with personality”.
Molson Coors portfolio brand director Ali Pickering said: “In Prague there’s always something new and exciting going on underneath the surface of the city.
“In the same way, Pravha is the unexpected side of Staropramen – an unexpectedly refreshing drinking experience that you might not expect from a Czech pilsner,” she added.
The new launch coincides with beer experts’ talk of an increase in demand from consumers for more sessionable beers, such as pilsners.
Pickering said: “In introducing this beer to the on-trade, we hope to excite consumers and drive increased rate of sale in the premium world beer category.
“We think this is the perfect beer for after work with colleagues or a night out with friends.”
Point-of-sale material will be

South Africa: Union plans to appeal against approval of AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
|
A South African union plans to appeal against a decision to clear Anheuser-Busch InBev NV’s takeover of fellow brewer SABMiller Plc next week, citing concerns that participants in an employee share-program aren’t being fairly compensated, Bloomberg reported on June 3.
The Food and Allied Workers Union believes the program should be wound up and participants paid the same as SABMiller shareholders stand to make from the $106 billion acquisition, General Secretary Katishi Masemola said by phone on June 3.
“We’re going to the Tribunal to argue our case,” Masemola said. “If the Tribunal doesn’t take our argument seriously, we will appeal to the Competition Appeal Court.”
The takeover was cleared by South Africa’s Competition Commission after AB InBev agreed to sell SABMiller’s 9 billion-rand ($577 million) stake in wine and spirits maker Distell Group Ltd., protect jobs and set up a 1 billion-rand fund to support the local beer industry. The union appealed to the commission, which then didn’t address the labor group’s argument when recommending the deal to the Competition Tribunal on Wednesday, Masemola said. An initial hearing is scheduled for June 7, with a full hearing to be scheduled for a later date.
The objection could delay the completion of the AB

Kenya: Another Dutch brewery to enter Kenya’s beer market
|
Battle for Kenya’s beer market is set to turn a new heat as former Kenya Distributor of Bavaria Beer Jovet Kenya Ltd signed a new deal with another Dutch brewer to enter the market, Capital FM Kenya reported on June 2.
Jovet Kenya Ltd, the local distributor, signed the deal to distribute Bavaria’s major rival brand Atlas Beer.
This comes after the local distributor was dropped by Bavaria Beer, after distributing for them for about 10 years.
Following the drop, Jovet Kenya Ltd sued Dutch brewer seeking compensation for the investments it made over the last 10 years to market and sell the brand before the Bavaria distributorship deal is transferred to another party.
“It is unfair that I have already spent a lot of money on branding and distribution, then now the company wants to take this away from me after 10 years of hard work, just because sales are now solid,” said Daniel Munene, director of Jovet Kenya in a case filed at the Milimani Commercial Court.
The court temporarily stopped Bavaria N.V from terminating the importation and distribution agreement held by Jovet Kenya pending an inter-parties hearing.
Speaking to Capital FM Business UDB Sales Manager Africa Sander Bos says the Kenyan market is

South Korea: Magpie Brewing opens new facility on Jeju Island
|
Magpie Brewing, one of the driving forces behind Korea's craft beer industry, has opened a new full-sized brewery on Jeju Island, The Korea Times reported on May 31.
The brewery was opened with a day-long party on May 28. As well as offering discounted brews, Magpie invited Jeju Island's four most famous food trucks, plus Linus' Bama Style Barbecue from Seoul, which served two whole pigs.
"It was actually way crazier than we expected," said Erik Moynihan, co-owner and managing director of Magpie.
He said they had hoped for 200 guests, but more than 700 came to the rural village where the brewery is located, about 20 minutes east of urban Jeju City.
The brewery, once fully operational, will make beer for all three Magpie brewpub locations ― Hongdae and Gyeongnidan in Seoul, and Tap-dong in Jeju City.
The Jeju location opened late in 2014, on invitation by Arario Group, which owns the building and provides a rent discount.
"They didn't invest directly into us ― it's almost like they're our patron," said Moynihan. "Once we were down here, we realized we needed to open a full-sized brewery."
They arranged with Arario to convert an old tangerine warehouse and processing facility into their brewery.
Previously, Magpie had been
