PLAYING WITH EXTRACTION PARAMETERS TO GET THE RIGHT FLAVOR
ABSTRACT
CO2 is a very potent in extracting basically anything you need
from hops. This UK research team worked with different conditions
including liquid and supercritical CO2, as well as the addition of
other solvents, e.g. ethanol, to extract the many important aroma
fractions from hops. Each hop variety yields distinct oil fractions
and a combination of different varieties and fractions can of course
contribute to a wide portfolio of products. Also, the processing
of aged hops is feasible and possible undesirable flavours may be
eliminated in the process.

USA, CA: Standard Deviant Brewing setting up shop in San Francisco
|
A new brewery and tap room is set to make its debut in San Francisco’s Mission this summer. Called Standard Deviant Brewing, the new business is setting up shop inside the former Ken’s Wheel Service space at 280 14th St., next-door to The Armory Club, Hoodline reported.
Finding the space wasn't easy. For two years, owners Mark DeVito, Paul Duatschek and Dave Azzam have been working to find the right spot for their up-and-coming brewery, but trio told us that they have been competing with deep-pocketed folks trying to build tech offices. Finally, after an exhaustive search, the Standard Deviant team say they've found the right space when it comes to square footage, price, and foot traffic.
“Our landlord was really cool,” said DeVito. “She said she had offers from big companies who were offering way more than we can pay her, but she was like, ‘You guys are local and actually keeping the spirit of the city going’ so she went with us instead of taking more money.”

USA, WA: Rainier beer brewed in Washington again
|
For the first time in 13 years, Rainier beer is once again being brewed in Washington state. Rainier is brewing their brand new Pale Mountain Ale at the Redhook Brewery in Woodinville, kgw.com reports.
On Monday and Tuesday, they are bottling about 20,000 cases as they finish their first batch. The people behind the process said they are excited to be back in the Pacific Northwest.
“Rainier has such a long history here in the Pacific Northwest, and this is kind of the first big step in coming back to our history and really partnering with the community,” Rainier’s Kurt Stream said. “This is the beer that your grandparents enjoyed, that your great grandparents enjoyed and we’re very excited that a whole new generation of Washington drinkers will experience Washington brewed Rainier.”
Both the beer and the packaging for the new beer are inspired by their post-Prohibition pale ales from the 1930s. The new beer is made using two-row barley and hops from the Yakima Valley. The Pale Mountain Ale is Rainier’s first new beer in 20 years.

USA, FL: The Broken Strings and Black Cauldron joint brewery opens in Orlando
|
The Broken Strings and Black Cauldron joint brewery in Orlando’s Parramore District opened on June 4 to cater to fans in the growing soccer-centric stretch of Church Street, Orlando Sentinel reported.
Co-owner Charles Frizzell said the brewery isn't running at full capacity yet. The team is still installing the actual brewery equipment, a three-barrel brewhouse system that will allow them to make about six kegs at a time.
"We're going to start brewing some smaller batches and then we'll upgrade in a year or so if we need to," Frizzell said.
Even if the brewery isn't operating yet, the taproom is serving some in-house brews.
Frizzell said they have started with a Ruckus Red Pale Ale, a tribute to Orlando City's supporter group the Ruckus, as well as a Liquid Vinyl IPA, a mix between an IPA and a stout. Those beers were made at another location by Broken Strings and Black Cauldron Brewers, Frizzell said.
Broken Strings and Black Cauldron started as a partnership of two different breweries that were trying to get clearance to open near downtown. The brewers eventually joined and found the spot in the Parramore district.

USA, TX: The ETX Brewing Co. hopes to get Tyler’s Planning and Zoning Commission approval soon
|
A new microbrewery could be coming to downtown Tyler, if the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission agrees to allow alcohol sales in a building at Elm Street and Broadway Avenue, Tyler Morning Telegraph reported.
The ETX Brewing Co. plans to move into a space just south of the new parking garage, in an industrial building that once housed Expert Tire.
However, because a school is about 300 feet away and a church about 75 feet away, the company will need a special use zoning variance to allow beer sales for on-premise consumption. The commission will discuss that variance in a workshop session on June 14.
ETX Brewing’s owners, brothers Brian and Matt Gilstrap, have been concocting their own beer for about a decade, and now they plan to make a business out of it.
“This has been a dream of ours for years, and just about three years ago, we came up with our business plan,” Brian Gilstrap said. “We have just gotten out of corporate America, and we’re ready to move forward.”
The building is owned by Mayor Martin Heines; a lease was signed last month.

China: Investors bet on Chinese breweries benefiting from UEFA European Football Championship
|
Investors are betting on Chinese breweries to score big, riding on the one-month UEFA European Football Championship, South China Morning Post reported on June 10.
“No beer, no football” and “Watch football, drink beer” are slogans used in advertisements that have already been seen everywhere in China, which boasts the world’s largest audience for the world biggest game. The one-month event will kick off in France starting Saturday Hong Kong time, with 24 national teams from around Europe competing to reach the final at the Stade de France in Paris.
“Breweries usually see their beer sales increase in the traditional peak season from June to August, not to mention during the European Championship,” Hanna Li Wai-han, a strategist at UOB Kay Hian Hong Kong said. “Speculators will certainly see the great football tournament as a new casino on expectation of a rally in breweries.”
Shares of the major breweries listed in Hong Kong jumped recently, with China Resources and Tingtao Brewery Company both gaining more than 6 per cent over the past fortnight.

UK: High excises hurting UK’s craft beer sector
|
The UK has one of the most exciting craft brewing scenes in the world, but thanks to one of the highest beer excise taxes in the world, craft brewers are being held back and the English pub, an icon of the culture, is dying at an alarming rate, Munchies reported on June 8.
Britain’s Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), a consumer advocacy group, reports the number of breweries in the UK hit an all-time high last year, at 1,424. More than 200 breweries opened last year. With a population of 64 million, that means the UK has far more breweries per capita than the United States, the birthplace of the craft beer revolution that is spreading all over the world. There are more than 4,200 craft breweries in the USA, where the population is 301 million.
America’s craft brewing industry is thriving, with the leading breweries making millions of hectolitres of beer annually. Craft breweries in America have been very positive forces in communities across the nation. Many states and cities are actively courting craft brewers because they have been engines of economic development.

Germany: Tettnang region hop area increases this year
|
According to official statistics, total hop acreage in the most southern hop growing area in Germany, Tettnang, is up 45 hectares (+3.6%) this year, HGA Tettnang reported.
The region’s 135 farmers expect harvested area to amount to 1,282 hectares (2.3% of world hop acreage). Nearly 70% are noble aroma hops (like Tettnanger and Hallertauter Mittelfrueh), 17% are other aroma and new flavour varieties, and 13% are high alpha hops like Herkules.

Russia: Lawmakers pass law limiting plastic beer bottles size to no more than 1.5 litre
|
Russian lawmakers on June 10 passed a law limiting the size of a plastic beer bottle to no more than 1.5 litre, Reuters reported.
The restrictions apply to beer and all other alcoholic beverages and come into effect on Jan. 1, 2017, for industrial production and from July 1, 2017, for retail sales.
The long-debated move, part of the government's efforts to curb drinking, adds to pressure on brewers whose sales have been falling in Russia over the past several years due to sales and advertising restrictions and tax hikes.
An economic recession has aggravated the slump, with leading brewers such as Carlsberg and Anheuser-Busch InBev being forced to reduce capacity or shut Russian plants.
Brewers in Russia sell nearly half their beer in plastic bottles, which are cheaper than glass, and bottles larger than 1.5 litres account for more than 20 percent of all beer sold in Russia, according to the Union of Russian Brewers' estimates.
Alcohol abuse causes around 500,000 premature deaths in Russia annually, according to Russia's consumer watchdog. Alcohol consumption in Russia remains among the highest in the world but in recent years consumption of beer had been increasing per capita.

South Africa: Competition Commission’s approval of AB InBev, SABMiller deal protects craft brewers
|
As Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) sails over the hurdles it must clear before gulping down SABMiller to form a company that would brew one in every three beers consumed globally, craft beer enthusiasts will be pleased to note that the South African Competition Commission has acted to protect their place in the SAB-branded fridge, eNCA reported on June 9.
SABMiller said at the beginning of this month that the Competition Commission of South Africa had recommended to the Competition Tribunal that its proposed combination with AB InBev be approved with conditions.
Terms underlying this recommendation included the establishment of a R1 billion development fund and the agreement to sell SABMiller’s 27 percent interest in JSE-listed Distell within three years. The parties also made pledges that there would be no merger-related job losses and that the new company would not depart from SABMiller’s popular policy of maximising local production.
The benefits of the R1 billion fund, with a mandate to invest in agricultural outputs (barley, hops and maize), as well as in the growth of emerging and black farmers, will bring cheers from way beyond the beer drinking market.

Kenya: East African Breweries Limited announces appointment of new managing director
|
The East African Breweries Limited has appointed Andrew Cowan as its new managing director, taking over from Charles Ireland who has steered the brewer for three years, AllAfrica.com reported on June 10.
EABL, which is 50.02 per cent owned by UK multinational Diageo, has announced that Mr Cowan, a Briton, will be taking over leadership of the company beginning July 28.
Mr Cowan, who joined Diageo in 2008, has until now been the country director for Diageo in Great Britain (GB) following prior commercial director roles in Ireland.
"We are certainly pleased to have Mr Cowan at EABL, as an established global business leader in the FMCG business," Charles Muchene, the brewer's board chairman, said in a statement.
"We see him bringing in a lot of expertise and commercial leadership which will be a good fit for the business. This will help us consolidate on the good progress and solid foundation that we have built over the years," he added.
Mr Ireland, who was appointed EABL MD in April 1, 2013, leaves Kenya to take up the newly created role of general manager Great Britain, Ireland and France for Diageo. He will be based in London.
