    • 2. Brewery News

Turkey's Efes Brewery Group launched a new brewery in Almaty region, Kazakhstan on August 26, Interfax reported. A source in Efes Karaganda Brewery told journalists that the initial capacity of the brewery would amount up to 60 million liters per annum, with a design capacity of 100 million liters. It is planned that the brewery will reach full capacity in five years. It was told that Efes Brewery Group investment in building the plant, which was started in October 2001, amounted to about $25 million. The company forecasts that the cost of building the new plant would be recouped over four to five years, with annual tax payments to the budget of $9.3 million. Total investment by Efes Brewery Group in the Kazakh economy, including the new plant, amounts to $75 million.

Japan’s beer maker, Sapporo Breweries Ltd., said on September 1 that by 2006 it would purchase malt and hops, the two basic beer ingredients, only from farmers under direct contract to the company, according to Kyodo News. The plan is designed to verify the provenance of Sapporo's beer products against a backdrop of rising consumer awareness of food safety issues, company officials said.

Austrian brewer, Oesterreichische Brau- Beteiligungs AG (BBAG), has reported that its turnover for the first six months was down 3.1 % at €544.1 million, while EBIT remained unchanged at €40.4 million after the strong second quarter performance offset a decline in the first three months of the year. Pre-tax profit rose by 11.5 % up to €35.0 million. BBAG, which is in the process of merging its beer unit with Dutch brewer Heineken, said its beer sales for the half were down 2.7 % to €474.8 million, despite a 2.6 % increase in volumes to 6.5 million hl helped by the hot summer weather. The highest growth was achieved in the export business, where sales rose by 38.9 %, mainly attributed to the development of the licence production of Gösser in Russia. There were also strong performances from other markets, helped by price reductions: sales in Poland grew 8.5 per cent – double the growth of the overall market – while in Romania and the Czech Republic volumes rose 6.1 per cent and 2.2 per cent respectively...more info

Russia's beer consumption grew 6.3% to 8.75 million hl in July 2003. 7-month consumption was up 4.3% on year to 45.5 mln hl (vs. 43.63 mln hl a year earlier). Beer sales added 17.8% a year earlier. Average beer consumption per capita jumped from 22.5 liters per person in 1998 to 49 liters in 2002. According to the investment house UFG data compiled by beverage analyst Alexei Krivoshapko in the survey titled "The Russian Brewing Sector 2003 and Beyond," Muscovites drink even more beer than their counterparts in the United States and Holland. Muscovites quaff 90.5 liters per year of the amber nectar -- 7 liters more than the average American and 8 liters more than the beer-loving Dutch. But industry experts said this figure was overblown and 70 liters was more realistic for Moscow, a level closer to those Brazil and Latvia. "I still don't think it would be as high [as 90 liters]," Zagvozdina said. "As much as I wish it were true, 70 liters is more realistic." Alexander Troitsky, deputy head of the Russian Brewers' Union, agreed that the numbers seemed too good to be true, adding that UFG may have used State Statistics Committee's figures, which put Moscow's population at 8 million to 9 million, when 11 to 12 million is closer to the truth. The UFG report, which draws on Statistics Committee numbers, uses a population of 15 million for Moscow and the Moscow region.

      3. Malt News

The Czech malting industry has sold 60 –70,000 tonnes of malt to Russia and recently 20,000 tonnes to Thailand. In both cases sales prices were EUR 20-30 per ton below calculated prices of EU maltsters, in the case of Thailand (EUR 280 CIF, in bulk in container) also far below Australian cost prices. Both EU and Australian maltsters had trouble to maintain their market shares in Thailand. It is reported that Australia finally sold 50 - 55,000 tonnes, the EU 75,000 and the Czechs 20,000 tonnes to Beer Thai, the largest buyer in Thailand.

      4. Barley News

For malting barley there is a large import demand in Central and Eastern Europe. Estimates are: Poland 150 thousand tonnes, Slovakia 75 thousand tonnes, Hungary 70 thousand tonnes, Romania 100-150 thousand tonnes, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia about 50 thousand tonnes together. The Czech Republic has an export surplus, but a large percentage of the crop of 1.75 million tonnes will have protein contents above 11.5 %. The Ukraine may export and import small quantities of malting barley, the selection is barely sufficient for its needs of 230 thousand tonnes. Russia is in danger of losing most of its quality barley due to long-lasting rainfalls, which still hinder harvesting works. Harvested qualities and conditions are mostly mediocre.

The USA Ministry of Agriculture has downgraded its forecast for the total yield of grains in Germany with 2.5 million tonnes to 39 million tonnes, according to ODJ. The drought had a great influence on all cereals. The quality of malting barley was damaged too and it is expected to have a high level of proteins. It is forecasted German breweries will have to import a part of malting barley.
