PLAYING WITH EXTRACTION PARAMETERS TO GET THE RIGHT FLAVOR

ABSTRACT
CO2 is a very potent in extracting basically anything you need from hops. This UK research team worked with different conditions including liquid and supercritical CO2, as well as the addition of other solvents, e.g. ethanol, to extract the many important aroma fractions from hops. Each hop variety yields distinct oil fractions and a combination of different varieties and fractions can of course contribute to a wide portfolio of products. Also, the processing of aged hops is feasible and possible undesirable flavours may be eliminated in the process.

Brewery news USA: Number of breweries in the state of California reaches 700
The California Craft Brewers Association announced on June 23 that the number of breweries in the state reached 700, more than at any time in California’s history, San Jose Mercury News reported.

The number of breweries has more than doubled in just the last four years. There are more breweries in the Golden State, by a wide margin, than in any other state. Eleven of the breweries on the list of the nation’s top fifty craft breweries, as defined by the Brewers Association, are based in California.

Brewery news USA, VA: Back Bay Brewing Co. to open second Virginia Beach location
Back Bay Brewing Co. announced plans for its second Virginia Beach location, Virginian-Pilot reported on June 22.

Farmhouse Brewing Co., in a partnership with Back Bay Brewing Co. and local general contractor Axis Global Enterprises Inc., will renovate the historic Wood Family farmhouse at 1805 Kempsville Road.

The farmhouse was built in 1910, and plans include tasting rooms, lounges and ADA-accessible facilities.

According to a release from the city, the 8.6-acre parcel will also include a brewery building, pergola, fruit orchard, a horseshoe area, picnic tables, open-air market, tented outdoor wedding and special-event space and an area for crops that will support the onsite brewing operations.

The capital investment is $1.4 million for the improvements and equipment. The Virginia Beach Development Authority has approved an Economic Development Investment Program grant in the amount of $35,000 based on the capital investment.

Future plans could include a restaurant or retail on the site to complement the brewery and event operations.

The property is the last of the original 500-acre farm owned by the Wood family. The home was previously occupied by William E. Wood & Associates, a realty company founded by William E. Wood Jr. in 1972, which has been sold and is now Howard Hanna William E. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Foulmouthed Brewing launched in South Portland
Foulmouthed Brewing, South Portland’s first brewpub, opened at 15 Ocean St. in Knightville on Wednesday afternoon, June 22, The Forecaster reported.

The menu features six beers brewed on site, beer-infused cocktails, and food including hand-cut French fries, nachos, sandwiches, and salads.

Owner Craig Dilger said he chose to open the brewpub in Knightville because it “is officially becoming one of the coolest neighborhoods in the area.”

Foulmouthed is open Monday through Friday from 3-11 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday noon-11 p.m.

Brewery news USA, IL: Macushla Brewing gets final approval to open in Glenview
In a 5-1 vote, the Glenview Village Board gave final approval June 21 to an ordinance allowing Macushla Brewing to open next to Hackney's On Lake, Chicago Tribune reported.

Mike Welch, Macushla Brewing founder, said he will submit building permits within the week. Once the permits are approved, construction will begin with the aim of opening by Jan. 1, 2017, he said.

"I am glad it is all buttoned up, and I am excited to get building permits and construction underway," Welch said.

In May, the Board talked about requiring Macushla Brewing, which will offer 34 seats inside and 74 seats outside, to have a valet park cars in stacks of three to the left of the building because of the high volume of customers at Hackney's. Since then, the parking system was amended to include valet parking when the lower level party room at Hackney's has reservations for holiday events or events of more than 60 people after 3 p.m., said Director of Planning Jeff Brady.

A Macushla Brewing parking study, which was reviewed by a village traffic consultant, found that 40 additional spots are needed at the location, which currently has 201 spaces, Brady said in May. The valet plan creates 44 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Ten Mile Brewing wants to move to industrial brewing in Signal Hill
A good drink can inspire epiphanies that die by last call. But in the case of Lakewood resident Dan Sundstrom, a few sips of his friend’s homemade beer during a visit to Oregon about nine years ago led him to brew his own batch, Long Beach Press Telegram reported on June 21.

“It was an enlightening experience,” Sundstrom said. “I didn’t know beer could taste like this. It was amazing.”

Sundstrom set about to make his own beer to enjoy and share with friends and family. The more he made, the more it was requested — at weddings, restaurants and special events.

Sundstrom, the facility director at Bethany Church Long Beach, and his son, Jesse, formed Ten Mile Brewing, named after Ten Mile Creek in Sierra Nevada, where the family owns a cabin. And, after earning multiple beer competition awards, Ten Mile Brewing now wants to move from its backyard plant in Lakewood to an industrial building in Signal Hill, which would call for zoning changes to make way for the city’s first brewery and beer tasting room for the public.

With the bureaucratic red tape not as snarled in Signal Hill as in other cities, and with beer scenes a relative distance away ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Battle Road Brewing Company looking to open brewpub in Maynard
Jeremy Cross, co-founder of Battle Road Brewing Company in Stoughton, served samples of their 1775 Tavern Ale and Barrett’s Farmhouse Ale at Online Wine and Liquors June 17, Wicked Local Clinton reported.

“I think we were the first store to carry Battle Road beer, and it’s been very successful,” said Carl Wollenberg, owner of Online Wine & Liquors in Maynard.

Battle Road Brewing Company, co-founded by brewmasters Jeremy Cross and Scott Houghton, in partnership with Whole House Group, plans to open a brewery and brew pub in Building 5 of the Mill and Main campus (formerly Clock Tower Place) in Maynard.

Cross began his journey to master brewer 20 years ago as an apprentice at Ipswich Brewery. He then moved to Alaska and brewed for a couple of different breweries for about two years, gaining a lot of hands-on experience.

“When you start formulating recipes, it’s really all about learning the raw materials, so handling different malts, hops, yeast, learning the process. You start to get a feel and a taste for what each ingredient contributes, and what you think it can contribute in your head, to what it actually contributes in the final product,” Cross said.

The next step was attending brewing school at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC & GA: Hi-Wire Brewing signs agreements with three Georgia wholesalers
Fast growing, Ashevillebased Hi-Wire Brewing has signed on with three Georgia wholesalers to expand its distribution beyond the North Carolina mountains and neighboring states, and will soon be available to craft beer fans in the Georgia markets of Northeast Georgia & Athens, Augusta, and Savannah, TheFullPint.com reported.

HiWire is partnering with Northeast Sales, AB Beverage, and Southern Eagle for these three markets.

Established in the summer of 2013, HiWire Brewing is one of the fastest growing craft breweries in Western North Carolina. Almost one year after opening their new production brewery, known as “The Big Top”, HiWire co-owner Chris Frosaker “cannot believe that in such a short amount of time Hi-Wire has grown into the company it is today. There has been a strong and persistent demand for HiWire beers in our current distribution footprint, so expanding into some Georgia markets only seemed to make sense. We are thrilled about this opportunity and look forward to connecting with the craft beer lovers of Georgia.”

Hitting its fourth state for distribution, HiWire is excited about this new market expansion and will bring their flagship beers into Georgia including HiPitch IPA, a balanced IPA brewed with Centennial and Mosaic hops; Bed of Nails Brown, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Rockmill Brewery plans to expand into Columbus
Rockmill Brewery plans to expand into Columbus with two locations in the near future, co-owner Matthew Barbee was quoted as saying by Lancaster Eagle Gazette.

The move comes after the Greefield Township trustees last month approved an expansion at his 5707 Lithopolis Road location. Barbee owns the business with his mother, Judy Jones.

One Columbus location will be at the former World or Beer location at 503 S. Front St., Columbus, also known as the Worly Building, in the Brewery District.

The other is at 525 S. Fourth St. in German Village, a space he plans to share with Juergens German Bakery.

The South Front Street business will be called the Rockmill Tavern, and Barbee said he signed the lease on the building last week. He said he hopes to open by September in the 3,800-square-foot building. The seating capacity of the building was 200 and he will shrink that to about 120 people.

"It's basically going to be a tasting room in Columbus, essentially," Barbee said. "So the aesthetics, we're going to try to recreate the nooks and crannies of the tasting room here. We're going to have a nice, warm, cozy aesthetic. We're installing a kitchen, so we're going to have a small, ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Heineken seeks protection from consequences of AB InBev/SABMiller merger
Heineken on June 22 criticised as vague and irrational the conditions of the mooted merger between major brewers Anheuser-Busch (AB) InBev and SABMiller, IOL reported.

The Competition Tribunal is currently holding hearings on the merger of the two major brewers. This comes after the Competition Commission last month approved the merger with conditions.

The conditions included AB InBev’s commitment not to retrench workers as a result of the merger, an undertaking to continue SABMiller subsidiary SAB’s policy of maximising local production of beer and cider and the creation of a R1 billion fund for the development of South African agricultural outputs for barley, hops and maize, as well as the promotion of entry and growth of emerging and black South African farmers.

But it was the conditions relating to the provision of access to cold room and fridge space that seemed to bother Heineken most. “The conditions are vague and ambiguous,” Heineken’s lawyer, Anthony Norton, said.

He said the merged entity – made up of the largest and second-largest brewing companies in the world – could abuse its dominance in the South African market.

Heineken’s stance is different from the previous concerns about a range of so-called public interest factors. Norton said that contrary to ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: President Putin signs bill banning production and sale of beer in plastic bottles larger than 1.5 litres
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill banning the production and sale in Russia of beer in plastic bottles larger than 1.5 litres, the RBC news website reported on June 24.

The bill was passed by the State Duma in early June, and bans the production of such bottles from Jan. 1, 2017 onwards. Sales will be banned from June 1, 2017.

Initially, the law would have banned bottles over 0.5 litres, but was changed after written complaints to the Kremlin from companies such as Carlsberg and Heineken. The bill's author Mikhail Tarasenko called this a compromise.

More than half of all beer in Russia is sold in plastic bottles because it is cheaper than glass, and sales of bottles affected by this bill account for 20 percent of all beer sales.

This puts pressure on brewers, whose business in Russia has been harmed already by the economic crisis, restrictions placed on advertising, and state-levied excise taxes. Making the switch to glass and downsizing will be costly and likely drive the price of beer even higher.

This law is one of many recent measures adopted by the Russian government to curb the country's overall alcohol consumption. There is a country-wide ban on sales of ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Food and Allied Workers Union says won’t take further part in approval process of AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV cleared a hurdle toward gaining approval for the brewer’s takeover of SABMiller Plc in South Africa as the country’s Food and Allied Workers Union said it will take no further part in the regulatory approval process, Bloomberg reported on June 23.

The FAWU agreed with the merging brewers and South Africa’s Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel on June 23 that most conditions relating to the future of SABMiller’s Zenzele employee-share program be removed from the Competition Commission’s recommendation of the deal. The FAWU will instead negotiate on behalf of the program’s participants directly with AB InBev and won’t argue its case against the conditions at the Competition Tribunal hearing in Pretoria this week, the union said.

South Africa is just one of the jurisdictions where AB InBev is trying to get regulatory approval for the takeover, with the country’s Competition Tribunal set to decide on whether to rubber stamp the deal after the hearing concludes on June 24. A key date in the process is Aug. 12, when SABMiller is scheduled to pay its dividend. AB InBev will receive the payout if the deal is completed by then. Brewery news India: SBI-led consortium of banks opposes Heineken’s application to implead in case between Kingfisher Airlines and the banks
An SBI-led consortium of banks on June 22 opposed Dutch beer major Heineken’s application to implead in a case between the banks and Kingfisher Airlines Ltd before the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) in India, the Hindu Business Line reported.

Heineken holds a 43 per cent stake in United Breweries Ltd, which runs Kingfisher.

“At this stage, money lent by the banks and their recovery is being given priority. It (Heineken’s application) cannot be allowed or decided,” a senior counsel appearing for the consortium argued before Presiding Officer CR Benakanahalli.

Heineken is seeking an “anticipatory relief”. The application can be allowed or entertained only at the time of recovery, or while recovery proceedings are taken up, the consortium’s counsel contended.

Counsel appearing for Heineken, quoting a few high court judgments, argued that it has some presumptive rights on UBL shares owned by the company’s chief Vijay Mallya.

It hence wants to be made a party in the proceedings and get rights on purchase of shares attached and sold as per court order.

However, the banks’ counsel said a number of agreements and rights are being produced without getting authenticated. The Tribunal does not have the right to judge them either.

The Presiding Officer said he will give ...More info on site
