PLAYING WITH EXTRACTION PARAMETERS TO GET THE RIGHT FLAVOR
ABSTRACT
CO2 is a very potent in extracting basically anything you need
from hops. This UK research team worked with different conditions
including liquid and supercritical CO2, as well as the addition of
other solvents, e.g. ethanol, to extract the many important aroma
fractions from hops. Each hop variety yields distinct oil fractions
and a combination of different varieties and fractions can of course
contribute to a wide portfolio of products. Also, the processing
of aged hops is feasible and possible undesirable flavours may be
eliminated in the process.

China: China Resources Beer says AB InBev, SABMiller deal will be cleared by competition authority soon
|
An executive at China Resources Beer said on July 6 he believes the country’s competition authority is set to clear Anheuser-Busch InBev’s (AB InBev) takeover of SABMiller, City A. M. reported.
“We don’t see any obstacle so far in getting a green light from China authorities,” chief financial officer Tomakin Lai said, reported Reuters. “We are confident that the deal can eventually get approval.”
It is unclear when the Chinese authorities will publish a final decision on the deal.
China Resources Beer also said on July 5 it is seeking to raise $1.2 bln in a discounted Hong Kong share sale to part-fund the purchase of SABMiller’s stake of their CR Snow joint venture.
China and the US are the two major markets that still have to clear the takeover, dubbed Megabrew, which will be the largest British corporate merger if it occurs later this year.
"We continue to engage proactively with the relevant authorities in China to address their concerns in order to obtain the necessary clearances as quickly as possible," an AB InBev spokesperson told City A.M.
Last week, AB InBev said it was “well on track” to close the £71 bln deal in the second half of 2016 after the South African competition

Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe gives green light to AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
|
Zimbabwe has given the green light to SABMiller’s merger deal with AB InBev, but has set conditions such as maintaining farmers’ contracts and maintenance of production of local brands.
SABMiller controls Zimbabwean listed biggest brewer and manufacturer of soft drinks, Delta Corporation, Creamer Media’s Engineering News reported on July 5.
Delta Corporation also owns a significant interest in Afdis, in which Distell also has shares. Afdis manufactures wines, spirits and ciders and is a value proposition for Delta as consumers switch to cheaper alternatives such as spirits.
“I wish to advise that the examination of the … merger has been finalised and the Commission approved the transaction … with conditions,” said Zimbabwe’s Competition and Tariff Commission acting director, Ellen Ruparanganda, in a letter to Delta Corporation and AB InBev dated July 1.
“Approval of the proposed transaction is subject to certain conditions concerning the business operations of Delta,” said Ruparanganda.
The letter cautioned against possible retrenchments at the Zimbabwean listed brewer as one of the conditions for approval of the merger deal.
It also listed that Delta be able to maintain its contract farming arrangements in Zimbabwe for the production and supply of sorghum and malt. New owners AB InBev also have to make sure that

Tanzania: SABMiller takeover deal not to affect operations in Tanzania
|
SABMiller, the world's second-largest brewer trading as Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) in Tanzania, has assured Tanzanians that the takeover of the company by AB InBev will not affect operations in Tanzania, AllAfrica reported on July 1.
In an interview with the 'Daily News' in Dar es Salaam on June 30, SABMiller Africa Environment Manager, Muzi Chonco, said the sale of SABMiller's stake was a normal cycle of corporate groups in the world.
Mr Chonco who is in the country to, among other things, oversee operations of TBL, assured employees that the company's acquisition should not be perceived negatively, instead, it should be taken as a normal issue because even SABMiller which is the second-largest brewer became big after acquiring other companies.
On June 30, the South Africa's Competition Tribunal approved the blockbuster buyout of SABMiller by the world's top brewer AB InBev, subject to conditions, paving the way towards completion of the huge deal.
The company is scaling up its globally-recognised sustainable development programmes with a set of ambitious new targets to achieve by 2020. The business, which is recognised as a leader in embedding sustainability into its operations, intends to reduce carbon foot print, improve food security as well as achieve a world-class

Mexico: Constellation Brands brewery leaves neighbouring municipality with almost no water, mayor complains
|
Americans love Mexican beer. The US imports more beer from its neighbor to the south than all other importers put together, and Corona is the country's fifth best-selling beer, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2015. But the mayor of the municipality of Zaragoza just south of the US border says a brewery there—which produces Corona among other beers and was bought by US firm Constellation Brands in 2013—is sucking so much water from the region's already dry wells that it has left the area bone dry. "WE HAVE NO WATER FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION," he writes in a single-sentence letter to the Coahuila state governor, and tells the Guardian there's "barely a drop of water when you open the tap."
The beer produced by the brewery is exported to the US, and Constellation Brands in June 2015 announced a $2 billion investment to expand the facility, Reuters reported. Its aim: to produce and fill 20 million bottles of beer a day by 2017.
In comments to the Guardian, a rep for the brewery dismissed the mayor's comments, saying the local aquifer is replenished at rate greater than that at which the brewery removes beer from it. He also asserted that Zaragoza

UK: Post-Brexit uncertainty to affect brewing industry among others
|
While US brewery stocks have seen a slight stabilisation, steadying itself along with the rest of the market, British breweries may not enjoy the same fortune, despite a slight rally with the pound sterling in the wake of last month’s landmark decision to leave the European Union, the Drinks Business reported.
Should Article 50 be activated by Westminster, it will spark an exceedingly uncertain two years for the UK, and this affects the beer industry, too, according to Forbes.
With the Sterling low, and likely to stay that way for some time, English beer will be cheap to buy to the rest of Europe. However, a new tariff structure could bring down the cost of some imports into the UK while it raises the prices for others.
As part of the free trade agreement, EU members aren’t required to pay tariffs on goods that come from inside the EU. Once Britain makes its exit, it will be free to drop the EU-mandates that they had currently been adhering to. That means good coming from outside the EU could be reduced or even scrapped of tax altogether, while goods from within the EU may now be charged for.
The EU will almost definitely place tariffs
