PLAYING WITH EXTRACTION PARAMETERS TO GET THE RIGHT FLAVOR

ABSTRACT
CO2 is a very potent in extracting basically anything you need from hops. This UK research team worked with different conditions including liquid and supercritical CO2, as well as the addition of other solvents, e.g. ethanol, to extract the many important aroma fractions from hops. Each hop variety yields distinct oil fractions and a combination of different varieties and fractions can of course contribute to a wide portfolio of products. Also, the processing of aged hops is feasible and possible undesirable flavours may be eliminated in the process.

Brewery news USA, CA: Pariah Brewing Company holding strong to tentative September opening
The newest addition to North Park’s craft beer contingent is currently under construction at 3052 El Cajon Blvd. Eater reported on June 29 that Pariah Brewing Company will be the first of three breweries moving into the new Brewery Igniter space and innovative turn-key brew hub from San Diego developer, H.G. Fenton Company.

Owner and brewer Brian Mitchell (former brewmaster at La Jolla Brewhouse and Helm’s Brewing Company) is outfitting the 2,000-square-foot former strip club into a combined brewery and tasting room suite with a 10-barrel Premier Stainless System, where he aims to top out at about 2,000 bbl per year. An industry veteran, Mitchell’s credentials also include time on the Small Batch Team at Stone, where he was responsible for R&D brewing, barrel aging, and "funky stuff" like Enjoy After IPA, its cask program and special creation beers.

Mitchell says the brewery's launch will feature two to three hop-forward offerings, two Belgian/French-inspired brews, a stout, and various wild and non-style-specific beers. Design-wise, the space will be "sophisticated with an edge as well as quirky and fearlessly whimsical".

Holding strong for a tentative September opening, Mitchell and his team plan to do previews and tasting events around town, in addition to creating a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Columbus Brewing Co. decides to expand
Columbus Brewing Co. is going to be making a lot more beer, Columbus Dispatch reported on July 2.

The largest craft brewer in central Ohio — and one of its oldest, dating to 1988 — hired Jason Davis, formerly a sales manager at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and most recently the vice president of sales for BrewDog's yet-to-open U.S. operation. Davis will become Columbus Brewing's strategic director and execute a plan to spread the brewery's beers across Ohio.

Columbus Brewing also took delivery of five 120-barrel fermentation tanks this week, raising its capacity by 75 percent.

"It's a big week," said Eric Bean, co-owner of the brewery. "Jason and I have been friends for a long, long time."

Davis joined BrewDog last year as the Scottish craft brewer announced a plan to build a massive brewery and U.S. headquarters in Canal Winchester. Davis worked at Columbus Brewing Co. two decades ago.

"I'm super excited to be working with Eric," Davis said. "I love these brands. The beer is there, the packaging is there; I’m excited to help elevate the brands."

BrewDog was not immediately available for comment. Davis declined to say why he chose to leave other than that the opportunity to join Columbus Brewing was ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Stump City Brewing submits application for federal brewers notice to produce beer
Stump City Brewing has submitted its application for a federal brewers notice to produce beer, and is hoping to begin brewing by the end of the summer, company owners said to Gloversville Leader-Herald.

Matthew Sherman, who owns Stump City Brewing along with Nicholas Sherman, Jerry Sherman and Casey Oare, said the group has nearly completed its 1,200-square- foot farm brewery at 521 W. Fulton St. Ext. in Gloversville.

"Our building is pretty almost complete; we're just waiting to hear from the federal government now. We've submitted for our federal licensing. That was the biggest piece," Sherman said. "We had to have a lot of the building done before we could even do that. They are saying the building needs to be totally complete, so we've got to send them pictures and all of that fun stuff."

Sherman said his business also had to qualify for what is known as a "brewers bond," a form of insurance required by the federal government.

Stump City Brewing, named after Gloversville's early nickname of "stump city," from all the trees cut down to create it, is an idea the Shermans and Oare have been working on for five years. Matthew Sherman said the brewery, which is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: NightLife Brewing Company shooting for 2017 opening in Miami
NightLife Brewing Company cofounder Juan O'Naghten announced on June 30 that he and partner John Cooper signed a lease for a 9,728-square-foot brewing space on the first floor at Home Plate Garage, known as P1, at Marlins Park, located at 1588 NW Seventh St., Miami, Miami New Times reported.

At least 1,500 square feet will be dedicated for a taproom with outside seating area, with the rest for brewing space and offices, O'Naghten tells New Times. Getting the location wasn't exactly easy, he says. Both he and Cooper looked elsewhere, but nothing went through. Instead, they focused on promoting their beers for three years at various events around the city. Eventually, their patience was rewarded.

"This fell in our laps last year," O'Naghten says. "We kept it quiet as much as possible." Why the secrecy? O'Naughten says it's because of "nameless competitors."

Getting the space took roughly nine months, starting in June 2015, with approvals steadily making their way through Miami's government before the final consent. The duo also had to get approval from the Marlins team itself.

Cooper also attributes his brewery's success to the work of previous breweries that came before NightLife and helped pave the way within Miami city government ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Urban Moose Brewing Co. to open in Sauk Rapids this summer
Urban Moose Brewing Co., a brewpub featuring fast-casual dining and 12 taps of original beers, will be opening in Sauk Rapids this summer, St. Cloud Times reported on June 28.

Roy Dodds, owner of the establishment, has had Urban Moose on his mind since he opened Flying Pig Pizza in 2012.

"When we had people vote on the names for the pizza place, Urban Moose was only one point behind Flying Pig. And we thought Flying Pig sounded more like takeout and delivery, while Urban Moose was definitely more brewpub, so we held on to it," Dodds said. "We bought the websites for both four years ago."

Flying Pig Pizza closed on April 10 to accommodate the move to the new Urban Moose location, which will incorporate Flying Pig Pizza on its dining menu. Construction has been ongoing since February, and soon the brewery doors will open, with hopes of ushering in a new era of brewpub dining in Central Minnesota.

"I spent a lot of my career in fine food and wine, and so I wanted to create that same kind of experience in a casual, family style environment and that spoke to craft beer so much more than wine," Dodds said.

The new ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Full Boar Craft Brewery to open in the Syracuse area soon
Eric Petranchuk and David Marchant started their partnership over barbecue. They sealed it over beer.

The two friends this month are launching Full Boar Craft Brewery and Tap Room, the latest craft brewery to open in the Syracuse area. It's a small brewery - brewing 3 barrels at a time (a barrel is 31 gallons). They will be rolling out their lineup of beers over the next few weeks, with soft opening hours - 2 to 8 p.m. Fridays and noon to 8 p.m. Saturdays - in the tasting room, Syracuse.com reported on June 28.

The brewery is in a standalone building on the south edge of the Maines Plaza, 628 S. Main St. (Route 11) in North Syracuse, just north of Taft Road. It's across the entry road from the main part of the plaza (behind the Applebees).

A grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, July 16.

In the meantime look for beers like Close Enough Ale, a beer that is bigger and stronger than a pale ale but quite as big as a an India Pale Ale.

"We made it, we liked it and it was close enough to an IPA that we decided to keep it," Marchant said. It's 6.5 percent alcohol, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Gadsden's Back Forty Beer Company starts exports to China
Gadsden's Back Forty Beer Company has joined a growing trend of small American craft breweries moving to export their products overseas, Birmingham Business Journal reported on June 28.

On June 27, Back Forty sent 1,500 cases bound for China out the door. Back Forty recently completed a $2 million expansion that has nearly doubled the company's production volume to roughly 25,000 barrels a year. The shipment to China is the result of those recent internal equipment expansions.

"The basis of that expansion alone was export development," Back Forty COO Tripp Collins said. "We've been doing business in Canada for the past three years, but it hasn't been a substantial amount of volume. We ended up finding the right partner and send those cases out the door today."

Collins' company isn't alone in its desire to place products in international markets. According to the Brewers Association, a Boulder, Colo.-based nonprofit trade group, the American craft beer export industry grew by more than 16 percent in 2015 - a growth spurt equating to 446,151 barrels worth roughly $116 million. Exports in 2014 approached the $100 million mark.

China is one of the most attractive markets for brewers as the world's largest beer consumer. The Chinese beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OK: Krebs Brewing Company purchases Tulsa-based Prairie Artisan Ales
Oklahoma's Krebs Brewing Company has purchased the popular Tulsa-based Prairie Artisan Ales, but don't expect to see or taste many big changes, Tulsa World reported on July 1.

In a blog posted on the Prairie Artisan Ales website on June 29, Zach Prichard, president of Krebs Brewing Company near McAlester, said that his brewery has acquired the brands, labels and recipes for Prairie. However, Prairie has had a partnership in Krebs for years, so Prichard said the beer line won't change much.

"The Prairies brands have been always well received and I've loved those beers," Prichard said. "To now be able to say my brewery owns these brands is really cool."

The deal occurred several months ago, Prichard said. And before that, Krebs Brewing Company, which also makes Choc beer in the small town near McAlester, had been brewing beers for Prairie and working closely with the Prairie Artisan Ales brewmaster and co-founder, Chase Healey.

"Early on I had been interested in actually owning a part of Prairie," Prichard wrote in the post. "Since I already felt like the beers were a partnership it only made sense. Last year that opportunity presented itself. Chase agreed to allow Krebs Brewing Company to acquire the Prairie ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Warrenton officials mark the start of site work for the Wort Hog Brewing Co.
Ceremonial gold-colored shovels were put to pavement as Warrenton officials and others gathered recently to mark the start of site work for the Wort Hog Brewing Co. in Old Town, fauquier.com reported on June 27.

The transformation of a former auto repair shop into a brewery and pub holds the promise of bringing more people to the downtown business district and spark other investment.

That was the hope expressed at the June 16 ceremony attended by town and county officials, the Wort Hog partners, architect, builder and bank representatives.

Town Manager Brannon Godfrey Mayor Powell Duggan and Council members Jerry Wood and Robert Kravetz attended, as did Town Planning Director Sarah Sitterle, Fauquier Chamber of Commerce President Joe Martin, Fauquier County Economic Development Director Miles Friedman, Warrenton economic development manager Heather Stinson, project architect James Hricko of Warrenton, Dominion Construction Group President Phil Clarke and representatives of Fauquier Bank.

Wort Hog partners – Matt Lutz, Lou Oliva and Cris Bezdek – were present as well.

Bezdek expressed gratitude for the support shown by town, banking and retail interests. “We're really happy to be here,” he said.

“We want the town to embrace it as their brewery,” added Lutz.

Oliva said they would encourage anyone ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Earth and Fire Brewing launches in Paso Robles
Amid Paso Robles’ fast-growing craft beer scene — with Firestone Walker and BarrelHouse both expanding and former Green Flash Brewing Co. brewer Chuck Silva building his own brewery — two avid homebrewers are opening what they’re calling the city’s first nanobrewery, The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported on June 29.

Earth and Fire Brewing opened on July 2, offering small pours, pints and growlers in an old veterinarian’s office at 825 Riverside Ave. Nick Vega and Nolan Mott have done almost all the work to transform the space, with help from family and friends.

“Everything we have is literally handmade,” Vega said, from the industrial-inspired light fixtures and stained concrete bar and floors to the two-barrel brewing system. “It’s been blood, sweat and beers.”

The family-friendly brewery opened with four beers — vanilla porter, Belgian abbey, imperial chocolate stout and double IPA — with plans to roll out new flavors regularly.

“We’re not going to be afraid to get funky and try different things,” Vega said. “With such a small system, we don’t have to worry too much about making mistakes.”

Mott and Vega, who both have day jobs as engineers, spent about $50,000 on the 1,500-square-foot space, where they have a two-year lease with ...More info on site

Brewery news China: China Resources Beer says AB InBev, SABMiller deal will be cleared by competition authority soon
An executive at China Resources Beer said on July 6 he believes the country’s competition authority is set to clear Anheuser-Busch InBev’s (AB InBev) takeover of SABMiller, City A. M. reported.

“We don’t see any obstacle so far in getting a green light from China authorities,” chief financial officer Tomakin Lai said, reported Reuters. “We are confident that the deal can eventually get approval.”

It is unclear when the Chinese authorities will publish a final decision on the deal.

China Resources Beer also said on July 5 it is seeking to raise $1.2 bln in a discounted Hong Kong share sale to part-fund the purchase of SABMiller’s stake of their CR Snow joint venture.

China and the US are the two major markets that still have to clear the takeover, dubbed Megabrew, which will be the largest British corporate merger if it occurs later this year.

"We continue to engage proactively with the relevant authorities in China to address their concerns in order to obtain the necessary clearances as quickly as possible," an AB InBev spokesperson told City A.M.

Last week, AB InBev said it was “well on track” to close the £71 bln deal in the second half of 2016 after the South African competition ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe gives green light to AB InBev’s takeover of SABMiller
Zimbabwe has given the green light to SABMiller’s merger deal with AB InBev, but has set conditions such as maintaining farmers’ contracts and maintenance of production of local brands. SABMiller controls Zimbabwean listed biggest brewer and manufacturer of soft drinks, Delta Corporation, Creamer Media’s Engineering News reported on July 5.

Delta Corporation also owns a significant interest in Afdis, in which Distell also has shares. Afdis manufactures wines, spirits and ciders and is a value proposition for Delta as consumers switch to cheaper alternatives such as spirits.

“I wish to advise that the examination of the … merger has been finalised and the Commission approved the transaction … with conditions,” said Zimbabwe’s Competition and Tariff Commission acting director, Ellen Ruparanganda, in a letter to Delta Corporation and AB InBev dated July 1.

“Approval of the proposed transaction is subject to certain conditions concerning the business operations of Delta,” said Ruparanganda.

The letter cautioned against possible retrenchments at the Zimbabwean listed brewer as one of the conditions for approval of the merger deal.

It also listed that Delta be able to maintain its contract farming arrangements in Zimbabwe for the production and supply of sorghum and malt. New owners AB InBev also have to make sure that ...More info on site

Brewery news Tanzania: SABMiller takeover deal not to affect operations in Tanzania
SABMiller, the world's second-largest brewer trading as Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) in Tanzania, has assured Tanzanians that the takeover of the company by AB InBev will not affect operations in Tanzania, AllAfrica reported on July 1.

In an interview with the 'Daily News' in Dar es Salaam on June 30, SABMiller Africa Environment Manager, Muzi Chonco, said the sale of SABMiller's stake was a normal cycle of corporate groups in the world.

Mr Chonco who is in the country to, among other things, oversee operations of TBL, assured employees that the company's acquisition should not be perceived negatively, instead, it should be taken as a normal issue because even SABMiller which is the second-largest brewer became big after acquiring other companies.

On June 30, the South Africa's Competition Tribunal approved the blockbuster buyout of SABMiller by the world's top brewer AB InBev, subject to conditions, paving the way towards completion of the huge deal.

The company is scaling up its globally-recognised sustainable development programmes with a set of ambitious new targets to achieve by 2020. The business, which is recognised as a leader in embedding sustainability into its operations, intends to reduce carbon foot print, improve food security as well as achieve a world-class ...More info on site

Brewery news Mexico: Constellation Brands brewery leaves neighbouring municipality with almost no water, mayor complains
Americans love Mexican beer. The US imports more beer from its neighbor to the south than all other importers put together, and Corona is the country's fifth best-selling beer, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2015. But the mayor of the municipality of Zaragoza just south of the US border says a brewery there—which produces Corona among other beers and was bought by US firm Constellation Brands in 2013—is sucking so much water from the region's already dry wells that it has left the area bone dry. "WE HAVE NO WATER FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION," he writes in a single-sentence letter to the Coahuila state governor, and tells the Guardian there's "barely a drop of water when you open the tap."

The beer produced by the brewery is exported to the US, and Constellation Brands in June 2015 announced a $2 billion investment to expand the facility, Reuters reported. Its aim: to produce and fill 20 million bottles of beer a day by 2017.
