INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE AND HOP AMOUNT ON EXTRACTION EFFICIENCY OF HOP OILS
ABSTRACT
This is currently a very big question for brewers - what
is the influence of the temperature during dry hopping?
Typically, brewers will utilize temperatures between
0-25 degrees C for dry hopping. A German research team
did a comprehensive trial with Cascade hops and
found that effects of temperature and hop dosage on
concentration of hop aroma compounds were different
for each compound that was investigated. Temperature
had an influence on dissolution of geraniol in beer,
while the transfer rate of myrcene exhibited a strong
dose-response as hop dosage mass increased with no
temperature influence.

USA: Craft beer sales estimated to be up almost 9% from the beginning of the year through May 15
|
After experiencing incredible growth in recent years, there are reports that sales of craft beers are slowing in 2016, Seeking Alpha reported on July 11.
After 19% growth in 2014 and 13% growth by volume in 2015, research firm IRI Worldwide reported that craft beer sales are up 6.5% by volume so far this year.
Bart Wilson, chief economist for the industry trade group The Brewer's Association, says that part of the lower figure is due to how market data is gathered. For instance, IRI includes Blue Moon and Shock Top beers in their calculations. These beers are owned by Coors and Anheuser-Busch InBev, which are a far cry from craft brewers. Excluding those types of brewers, the number climbs to 8.9% growth through May 15. Still, according to Wilson, "If it's 6 percent or 10 percent, that's a number that many industries in the U.S. economy would kill for."
Some big brewers, namely The Boston Beer Company, have seen sales dampened by the emergence of hundreds of new small craft brewers. In general, the maker of Sam Adams beer and Angry Orchard cider is regarded as a founder of the craft brew movement and the biggest craft beer maker in the

USA: Imported beers enjoy 6.7% growth in sales in January – June
|
Over the first six months of 2016, imported beers enjoyed stronger growth than craft brews, suggesting a change in consumer tastes in the US, Fox Business reported on July 12.
Imports may become the new king of beers. While the industry as a whole is on track to decline for the third time in four years, imported beer is showing the kind of strength that was once reserved for craft beers. While that segment's death has been greatly exaggerated, imported beer is now outselling craft over the first six months of 2016 and may be the new big beer trend.
Constellation Brands recently reported its first quarter earnings that showed it enjoyed 15% growth in the period, driven almost wholly by its portfolio of Grupo Modelo beers, primarily Corona.
According to the analysts at market research firm IRI, import beer grew 6.7% in the first two quarters of the year, surpassing the 6% increase achieved by craft brews. While that's down slightly from the 8.7% jump imports saw in the same period a year ago, it puts the category firmly ahead of craft beer, which had surged 17% in 2015.
It's clear beer of all kinds are struggling to maintain their momentum against the

Canada, NS: Schoolhouse Brewery to move to larger location and increase output
|
Schoolhouse Brewery owner Cameron Hartley has announced that after two years of operating in rural Nova Scotia out of a namesake historic schoolhouse where he also lives with his family, the brewery will soon be entering “phase 2” with a move to a larger and slightly more urban location, Canadian Beer News reported.
Hartley has signed a lease with Lay Yong Tan to move into a space adjacent to T.A.N. Coffee at 40 Water St. in Windsor, Nova Scotia.
A re-purposed 10-barrel copper brewhouse will soon be installed in the new location, with brewing expected to start in November, and a retail store to open the following month. The new spot will also feature a taproom that will open next spring, pouring not only Schoolhouse brands but also beers from other Nova Scotia craft breweries.

Canada, ON: Signal Brewery being established in Belleville
|
The Belleville Intelligencer reports that an historic community in Central Ontario with a connection to one of Canada’s longest running alcohol companies will soon be home to a new craft brewery.
Signal Brewery is being established by local businessman Richard Courneyea in Corbyville, a town now part of the city of Belleville that was the original home of the Corby Distillery.
The brewery is currently under construction in several former distillery buildings that have been vacant for nearly three decades. At a city planning committee meeting held on July 4, Courneyea indicated that work is around 50 per cent complete, and he hopes that the brewery will be operational by October.
In addition to the brewery, the complex is planned to include a retail store selling Signal beer along with products from other local producers and artisans, a tasting area with patio overlooking the Moira River, and an events space. The future addition of a distilling operation has also been mentioned as a possibility.

USA, NY: Copper City Brewing Co.’s crowd funding effort raises $38,632
|
Copper City Brewing Co.’s crowd funding effort has raised $38,632 from 419 backers, and the company continues to seek low-interest loans and make massive building renovations in order to be open this fall, according to owner Lori Frieden, Rome Sentinel reported on July 9.
Frieden and her husband Danny have partnered with friends Eric and Erica Daniels to open the brewery at 1111 Oneida St.
They ran a campaign through Indiegogo with a goal of $40,000. Though it fell just short of its goal, the site allowed those who use it to access funds raised regardless, but with higher fees if the goal is not met.
The crowd funding was to generate buzz and allow supporters to buy goods and services in advance. The entire project will take $300,000, said Lori. To fund the costs, the four principals have saved money and are applying for small business loans. They are still pursuing lower rates, she said, but have loans lined up. They also plan to apply for the city’s Rome Entrepreneurial Assistance Program (REAP), a low-interest loan program that helps with start-up costs.
The commercial building across Panesi Ave. from the former OJ Gulla Pools building and just off E. Dominick St. still needs

Canada, ON: Sudbury’s Stack Brewing receives grant to move to larger location
|
Stack Brewing has outgrown its location on Kelly Lake Road in Sudbury, Ontario, Sudbury.com reported on July 9.
Since it first opened its doors three years ago as a one-man operation, Stack has grown so much — it now boasts a staff of 14 — it needs a bigger location, said owner Shawn Mailloux.
New brewing equipment is also on its way, thanks to a C$281,538 Northern Ontario Heritage Fund grant, announced on July 8 by Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault.
“We are out of room, so now I'm trying to find a new location, which is part of the NOHFC grant,” Mailloux said.
The current location has been a “blessing,” he said. It was the proper location in which to launch Stack Brewing, and the plan is to keep it as an offsite production and retail location.
“We have a lot of customers in this area, so they'd like it if we kept a retail location here,” he said.
Expanding to this point would not have been possible without NOHFC funding, Mailloux said.
“You can only do so much funding a business by yourself. The NOHFC has been a silent investor, so to speak, to help us get from point A to point B.”

USA, IN: Tin Man Brewing Company to open second brewery in Kokomo
|
Tin Man Brewing Company, an award-winning microbrewery based in Evansville, announced plans on July 11 to open a brewery and taproom in downtown Kokomo’s historic train depot, the company’s second location, Kokomo Tribune reported.
The taproom is scheduled to open in late 2016, with the in-house brewery expected to be operational by early 2017, according to a city press release. Once fully operational, the brewery’s plan is to employ 15 to 20 people.
“We are thrilled they chose Kokomo for their new microbrewery location,” said Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight in the release. “Tin Man is one of the top brewers in the Midwest, and their business is well-suited for the revitalized depot district.”
Tin Man Brewing Company, founded in 2012, focuses on brewing their beer by using earth-friendly techniques, as noted in the release. Tin Man’s current roster of available beers includes six year-round brews and six seasonal flavors.
“We’ve been looking for a way to expand our presence in central Indiana,” said Tin Man vice president and owner Andy Davidson. “After visiting Kokomo and witnessing the growth and progression in the downtown area, we thought it would be a perfect fit.

USA: Big brewers agree to detailed beer labelling
|
Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors and other big brewers are backing an initiative to disclose a consistent listing of calories, carbs and other information on beer labels, St. Louis Post Dispatch reported on July 12.
Following debate on the issue stretching several years, the Beer Institute, a national trade group that lobbies on behalf of the country's largest brewers, announced the 'Brewers Voluntary Disclosure Initiative' on July 12.
The initiative encourages brewers to provide more information to consumers on beer labels, the group said, by disclosing calorie, carbohydrate, protein, fat, and alcohol content information on labels. The guidelines also include displaying a freshness date or date of production. Many brewers already disclose some of this information on beer labels.
The voluntary initiative doesn't say all ingredients should be disclosed on each label, however, a measure that some have backed. Instead, the initiative says ingredients should be either disclosed on labels, or the label should include a link or QR code that refers to a website with a list of ingredients.
Some participating brewers are making the changes immediately and the trade group said brewers and importers are encouraged to achieve compliance by the end of 2020.

Japan: Kirin Brewery aims to double sales of imported whiskey by 2020
|
Kirin Brewery aims to double sales of imported whiskey by 2020, the company said on July 5, hoping to quench the thirst of drinkers who have taken a liking to highballs as Japanese distillers experience whiskey shortages, Nikkei Asian Review reported.
The Kirin Holdings group company in August will add Johnnie Walker Green Label to the Scotch whiskies it imports from British distiller Diageo. Kirin, which sold 560,000 cases of Johnnie Walker Scotch whiskey in 2015, looks to at least double sales volume by 2020 with the addition of the higher-priced Green Label.
Other Japanese companies also are boosting whiskey imports. Suntory Spirits recently upped its 2016 sales target for Jim Beam bourbon from 500,000 cases to 550,000. The popularity of highballs helped boost January-June sales 49% above the year-ago period. By the end of 2016, the company aims to stock Jim Beam in 40,000 drinking establishments, up 60% from the end of last year.
Asahi Breweries will add an upscale Jack Daniel's whiskey July 26 that the company priced four times higher than the other Jack Daniel's products it imports from the U.S. distiller. Asahi sold 240,000 cases of Jack Daniel's products in 2015, and January-June sales were 14% higher than in

UK: Winter barley harvest starts in Norfold and Dorset and quality appears low
|
Combines started rolling at the end of last week as winter barley crops were cut in Norfolk and Dorset with early yields looking reasonably good although quality appeared low, FarmersWeekly reported on July 11.
With unreliable harvest weather, cutting was sporadic over the weekend and from a scattering of results specific weight quality was disappointing with some crops below 60kg/hl.
Norfolk grower Michael Dennis started cutting the six-row winter barley feed variety Sequel on July 8 with yields estimated at 7.5 t/ha, and grain coming off the combine at a moisture level of 14%.
He cut 6 ha on Friday, July 8 and Sunday, July 10, with another 28ha still to go at his farm and contracting business at Kings Row Farm, North Pickenham, about three miles south-east of Swaffham.
“The crop has looked good but the weather has been rubbish,” he said.
All grain grown is fed through the farm’s pig unit, so there was little information on specific weights.
Further south, Dorset grower Calvin Hooper also started harvesting on July 8 with yields at about 8 t/ha at 15% moisture, but quality was lower than expected.
Specific weight was coming in at 57 kg/hl against a more normal 63 kg/hl, as the pinched grain dried

Japan: Blistering summer heat provides long-awaited boost to beer sales
|
As blistering summer heat has arrived, breweries in Japan are increasing production while daily goods makers are examining output hikes for their antiperspirants, The Japan News reported on July 11.
At Tokyo-based supermarket chain Summit Inc., sales of beer in the week through July 3 surged by 20 percent from a year earlier, and those of ice cream and other ice products by 50 percent.
Summit’s flagship store in the Seijo district in Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward has expanded its selling space for beer.
Moves to increase beer and quasi-beer production are spreading among major Japanese breweries.
Asahi Breweries Ltd. will boost the production of beer and quasi-beer products by 10 percent from a year before this month.
Suntory Beer Ltd. plans a 10 percent beer output increase for the two months through August. Production hikes are also planned by Kirin Brewery Co. and Sapporo Breweries Ltd.
In addition, production will be raised by 40 percent for Asahi Soft Drinks Co.’s Wilkinson carbonated water and by 30 percent for Kirin Beverage Co.’s Nama-cha green tea.
Last year, temperatures dropped from the middle of August and summer sales lost their vigor.
“We hope that the heat wave will continue throughout this summer,” a major beer firm official said.

Vietnam: Sapporo Holdings to begin marketing a low-cost beer in Vietnam
|
Sapporo Holdings will begin marketing a low-cost beer brand in Vietnam later this month, joining other rivals seeking to develop one of the few growing middle-class markets, Nikkei Asian Review reported on July 12.
The new label launches July 28 and is expected to sell for 13,000 dong to 15,000 dong (58 cents to 67 cents) per 330mL can at volume retailers. This is the equivalent of around 19 cents cheaper than the mainstay Sapporo Premium lager sold in that market.
While Sapporo Premium conveys a touch of class from a Japanese brewer, the new brand will offer a refreshing taste for drinkers in Vietnam's tropical environs. The company apparently aims to sell some 150,000 cases this year.
The new product will target the middle class. In Vietnam, people commonly eat at food stands and large cafeteria-style restaurants. These establishments sell the mid- to low-priced brews that account for 90% or so of the beer market.
Competition is increasingly fierce. The state-run Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp. specializes in selling the 333 brand and other low-cost beers priced at the rough equivalent of 50 cents. Dutch brewer Heineken is gaining fans with an expanded lineup, which includes the midpriced Tiger label. And Belgium's Anheuser-Busch

The Philippines: Philippines’ largest microbrewery continuing its success story
|
Rajesh Sadhwani is a beer connoisseur. Aside from loving this gentle alcoholic drink, he treasures the financial independence he derives out of the business his passion has led him to.
From importing premium beer for local distribution, Sadhwani now owns the Philippines’ largest microbrewery business as a natural complement to his growing distribution business of imported wines and beer spirit and an expanding chain of restaurants, the Manila Bulletin reported on July 12.
Sadhwani was studying at the Suffolk University in the US when the Asian financial crisis struck, doubling his tuition, forcing him to leave school and help the family’s Liquor and Tobacco Department for Duty Free Superstore, Inc. in Subic Freeport.
This experience gave him the idea to pursue a distribution business for imported spirits as he saw the growing demand for these products. And so, Booze On-Line, Inc. was born in 2000.
Booze has become one of the leading importers and distributors of premium wines and spirits and beers from other countries, mostly from Europe.
To have a steady outlet for his products, Sadhwani decided to venture into the restaurant business in 2008. It was named The Distillery, which showcased the widest selection of imported beers at that time. It was an
