ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.

Canada: Barley use forecast to increase by 11% in 2015-16 and to be up only marginally in 2016-17
|
In 2015-16, Canada’s total domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 11% to 6.1 mln tonnes due to increased feed use, with industrial use remaining unchanged, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada reported in July.
Exports are forecast to decrease by 17% to 9.578 mln tonnes due to lower world trade in feed barley.
Carry-out stocks of barley are expected to increase by 15% to 1.4 mln tonnes which is slightly higher than the previous five-year average.
The Lethbridge cash feed barley price is forecast to increase from 2014-15 due to the tight total supply and good domestic feed barley demand. Barley prices at Lethbridge have been pressured by good old crop supplies, a better barley crop on the way and much improved forage and pasture conditions on the Prairies.
For 2016-17, seeded area is forecast to decrease slightly from 2015-16 and production is forecast to decrease by 4% to 8 mln tonnes due to the lower area and a forecast for average yields.
Despite higher carry-in stocks, the lower production will cause total supply to decrease by 2% to 9.5 mln tonnes.
Total domestic use is forecast to increase marginally to 6.3 mln tonnes.

Canada, AB: Annex Ale Project aiming to be up and running in Calgary by November
|
On Beer reports that the head brewer at one of Calgary’s most established craft breweries is about to set out on his own.
Annex Ale Project is being founded by Andrew Bullied, head brewer at Village Brewery for the last four years, along with partner Erica O’Gorman of the unrelated Village Ice Cream.
The duo are close to securing a location in Manchester Industrial Park in Calgary’s southwest, where they will be installing a 10 HL brewing system with three 20 HL fermenters and two 10 HL fermenters.
Annex will offer two year-round beers – Extra Pale Ale [XPA] (“light malt profile, west coast character, gigantic hop aroma but not a huge bitterness”) and North American Bitter (“all the nuttiness, caramel you expect with the English bitter balance, but with a big North American nose to compliment malt profile”) – as well as a constantly rotating series of seasonals and one-offs.
Annex Ale Project is aiming to be up and running by November, with the first beers available just before Christmas.

Canada, AB: Half Hitch Brewing launched in Cochrane, southern Alberta
|
More than three years after it was first announced, Half Hitch Brewing has launched in Cochrane, a town located just west of Calgary in southern Alberta, Canadian Beer News reported.
Half Hitch has been founded by a family-led team that includes award winning homebrewer Chris Heier, his father Mike Heier, brother Kyle Heier and step-sister Brittney Kozloski, with several other relatives participating as shareholders.
According to Alberta beer news website The Daily Beer, the brewery’s three flagship brands – Farmer’s Daughter pale ale, Fire ‘n Fury red ale, and Shotgun Wedding brown ale – made their debut last night at Killarney’s Pub in Cochrane, and will be on tap at select bars in Calgary next week.
The Half Hitch taproom and restaurant at 10 Griffin Industrial Point #1 in Cochrane has yet to open, but should be operational later this year.

Canada, AB: Lakeland Brewing to open its doors in St. Paul on July 21
|
The east-central Alberta town of St. Paul will soon be home to the province’s newest brewery, with the opening of Lakeland Brewing this month, Canadian Beer News reported.
Founded by Colin Porozni, Lakeland will be opening its taproom at 4227 50 Avenue in St. Paul on Thursday July 21st, pouring samples, glasses and growlers of several brands including Frigid Gypsy Ale, Jay Bird Amber Ale, Power Failure IPA and Lakeland Honey Brown.

USA, AL: Alabama brewers want more locally grown hops and barley
|
The craft brewing industry is continuing to grow all over the country, and Alabama is in the race to make its beer stand out from the rest. However, the climate in Alabama makes it difficult to make a beer made with local ingredients, The Plainsman.com reported on July 17.
“The problem is that hops prefer a higher latitude because of the longer days," said Julie Howe, associate professor of crop, soil and environmental sciences.
Howe teaches one of the classes in the brewing science program. She teaches about the brewing materials used, which include hops and barley.
“We will probably never be able to compete with the Pacific Northwest,” Howe said. “Because they have the excellent conditions for growing hops. So we want to try to grow hops for selective locally-produced beers or varieties that aren't the same as those grown in the Pacific Northwest.”
The most popular use for barley in Alabama has actually been as an animal feed. Austin Hagan, a professor of entomology and plant pathology, has been working with the University to help provide information to farmers who want to pursue growing hops and barley.

France: The worst spring since many years damages barley quality this year
|
France experienced the worst spring since many years, heavy precipitation, cold temperatures, flooded and lodged fields. It had to be expected that the barley quality would suffer badly from these conditions, but also the size of production will be lower than average and earlier predicted, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their July report.
FranceAgriMer has lowered the “good to excellent” crop ratings within two weeks for winter barley from 73 to 62% and for spring barley from 86 to 71%. Some early winter barley results from the south of Paris and in the Centre show low yields, low test weight and sieving results, also high protein (due to low yields, while normally rains provide for heavy yields with the risk of low protein).
Of course, conditions are variable in a large country, but Agreste‘s June estimate of a winter barley crop of 9.47 mln tons will probably turn out too high.
Kernel size, protein contents, damaged grains and germination problems could reduce the selection of winter and hopefully to a lesser extent spring malting barley, an estimate is not possible yet.

France: FranceAgriMer’s latest report says less than half wheat and winter barley crops is rated now in good or very good condition

Over the last two to three months, the condition of French wheat and barley crops has become more and more of a hot topic. A special report published on July 12 by FranceAgriMer for AHDB detailed the timetable of crop development for both crops, from favourable back in early spring, to rapidly falling conditions during June.
According to new data from FranceAgriMer’s crop rating system (Céré’Obs), things have worsened further. As at the week ending 11 July, the proportion of France’s soft wheat and winter barley crops rated in good or very good condition is less than half, substantially lower than the previous week. With 49% good/very good for soft wheat, this is the lowest rating since reporting began in 2012.
While FranceAgriMer are reserving judgement on overall quality until the crop is ‘in the bin’, harvesting is now well underway for wheat and barley. This suggests an upturn in crop conditions is unlikely to be on the cards – which could mean implications across the different wheat markets.
FranceAgriMer will publish its first technological quality assessments in August, until then the weekly crop condition reports will remain an important issue for markets.

UK & Ireland: Low winter barley quality causing concern
|
Low grain quality is causing concern as more winter barley crops are harvested across southern England and Ireland, while combines have also started moving into oilseed rape, FarmersWeekly reported on July 19.
Barley crops in the East are showing reasonable yields and quality, while early harvests further west and some in the South are seeing yields and quality down on recent seasons.
Harvest is well under way in winter barley crops across the southern half of England, while the first oilseed rape crops were being cut in Essex and Kent earlier this week.
Barley growers blame a lack of sunshine this spring and summer for the pinched grains being seen coming off combines, which is resulting in some low specific weights.
Two large light land Suffolk estates were close to finishing their barley harvest at the end of this week with reasonable yields, but in Dorset and Kent, crops have suffered from the dull weather in June.
In the Suffolk Brecklands, on some of the lightest arable land in Britain, early yields were between 7-8 t/ha and specific weight quality a respectable 65 kg/ha.

World: Major spring price rally on grains and oilseeds markets seems to be over

Due to South American crop damages, grains and oilseeds markets performed a major spring price rally, but have now fallen back to the levels of March/April. One large exemption are soybeans, which defended the higher price level in view of tighter supplies until next harvest in South America, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported early in July.
European wheat and barley had followed the U.S. markets half-heartedly or not at all, the analysts said.
On June 30, the USDA confirmed an unexpected large increase of the corn and small increase of the soybean acreage in the U.S., reinforcing the bearish market mood. In spite of corrected regulations on the major grain exchanges, the computer-programmed, high volume speculative trading of funds has led once again to irrational, huge price fluctuations, badly affecting the hedge business of trade and grain industries.

UK: Wheat and barley exports in May at their highest combined level since May 1997
|
UK wheat and barley exports during May were at their highest combined level since May-97, with wheat shipments at 348 thousand tonnes and barley at 127 thousand tonnes. Both crops are coming close to beating current 2015/16 UK export forecasts, HGCA reported on July 13.
Monthly barley exports have started to tail off, with a tighter UK balance compared to wheat. However, for wheat, it was the second largest monthly tonnage of wheat exported this season. If UK export momentum is maintained, UK wheat and barley stocks might not be as high as first anticipated moving into next season, HGCA experts said.
For barley cumulative exports are now at 1.89 mln tonnes, with full season exports currently forecast by Defra at 1.90 mln tonnes. Bar the final 10 thousand tonnes, the current full season forecast has now been hit with one month to go, already implying a tighter balance sheet than previously anticipated.

Japan: Asahi settles dispute over non-alcohol beer with rival Suntory
|
Asahi Group Holdings Ltd said on July 20 it has settled a dispute with Suntory Holdings Ltd after Suntory accused its rival of infringing a patent for non-alcohol beer, Reuters reported.
The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
The Tokyo District Court in October rejected a request from Suntory for an injunction to stop Asahi from selling Dry Zero beer, ruling there was no patent infringement. Suntory then appealed the decision in the Intellectual Property High Court.
Suntory has withdrawn its appeal and Asahi will continue making and selling the Dry Zero brew, Asahi said in a statement.
Japan's zero-alcohol beer segment is hotly contested as the country's overall beer market shrinks. Suntory was the top seller of no-alcohol brews in 2014, but was overtaken by Asahi last year.

UK: AB InBev looking for 40% more high-nitrogen malting barley next year

The brewer of Budweiser beer is looking for 40% more high-nitrogen malting barley next year, which has attracted heavy-land growers looking for a spring cereal break to control blackgrass, FarmersWeekly reported on July 19.
The owner of the beer brand, Anheuser-Busch InBev, will be looking for 35,000t of the high-enzyme French spring barley variety Explorer in 2017 to help meet the needs of its two UK breweries, it is reported.
The world’s biggest brewer requires malting barley of 1.8-1.9% grain nitrogen.
