ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.

USA: AB InBev wins US antitrust approval for its takeover of SABMiller
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV won U.S. antitrust approval for its takeover of SABMiller Plc, after the maker of Budweiser agreed to give up ownership of the Miller brand and open the door to greater competition from craft beers, Bloomberg reported on July 20.
AB InBev will sell SABMiller’s stake in MillerCoors LLC, separating the two brands, and refrain from practices that restrict distribution of smaller rival brews, thus protecting the ability of craft and import beers to compete, the Justice Department said in a statement on July 20. The settlement will prevent any increase in concentration in the U.S. beer industry, according to the statement.
“The two largest U.S. brewers - ABI and MillerCoors - will now remain independent competitors after the deal,” Sonia Pfaffenroth, a deputy assistant attorney general at the antitrust division, said in the statement. Distributors that sell AB InBev beer “will have the freedom to sell and promote the variety of beers that many Americans drink.”
The agreement to allow the brewing juggernauts combine runs counter to the government’s recent moves against other big deals - the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission have killed proposed tie-ups in the cable, office supplies and oil drilling industries, among others. In

USA: Brewers Association issues statement on approval of AB InBev, SABMiller merger

Bob Pease, president and CEO of the Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers—released the following statement regarding the approval of Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI) to acquire SABMiller:
“Today’s decision by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to approve the acquisition of SABMiller by ABI stipulates many of the safeguards the Brewers Association requested to preserve fair competition and access to market for America’s small and independent craft brewers.
While we continue to believe that the merger of the world’s two largest brewers is bad for both the beer industry and consumers, the DOJ’s significant requirements, including the termination of incentive programs such as the Voluntary Anheuser Busch Incentive for Performance Program (VAIP), a cap on ABI’s self-distribution volume and other measures to protect distributor independence, appear to address some of our major apprehensions with the merger. With effective enforcement of these provisions, small brewers can rely on their independent distributor partners to access the market. This will help ensure that beer enthusiasts can continue to enjoy a vast variety of options from the more than 4,600 breweries in the U.S.

USA: MillerCoors’ craft beer division agrees to acquire majority stake in Terrapin Beer Company
|
MillerCoors announced on July 20 that Tenth and Blake Beer Company, its craft beer and import division, has reached an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Terrapin Beer Company.
The purchase builds on a pre-existing relationship between the two companies: MillerCoors, via Tenth and Blake, had previously acquired a minority (less than 25 percent) stake in the Athens, GA-based craft brewery in early 2012.
Specific financial terms were not disclosed and the transaction is expected to close in August, MillerCoors said.
“With Tenth and Blake’s dedication to helping us grow and their passion for creating high-quality craft beers, we knew it would be the perfect partnership,” Terrapin co-founder Brian “Spike” Buckowski said via a press release. “We look forward to continuing to create innovative beers to share with beer lovers nationwide.”
In a note to partners, Tenth and Blake CEO Scott Whitley described the Terrapin acquisition as “an important regional play for Tenth and Blake as the Southeast is an underdeveloped craft market with significant growth potential.”

USA, VA: Stone Brewing’s Richmond brewery officially online and brewing
|
As it put together plans for its massive 20th Anniversary celebration, Stone Brewing announced in early July that its new 250-barrel brewing facility in Richmond, Virginia is officially online and producing beer. The morning of July 8, the brewery began kegging and distributing Stone IPA, signifying what the Escondido-based company announced as "the official launch of Stone’s East Coast operations, ultimately providing the freshest Stone beer to more craft beer fans east of the Mississippi", San Diego Reader reported.
The central Virginia location makes it geographically viable to fulfil Stone's mission to distribute fresh beer to Eastern states — which is why San Diego beer companies Ballast Point and Green Flash also have Virginia production breweries in the works. While Stone immediately began distributing Richmond-brewed beer throughout Virginia, more will soon follow, and Stone expects to distribute to all 50 states by the end of 2016. Green Flash and its subsidiary Alpine are the only breweries to do so currently, while Ballast Point also reports being on schedule to deliver to all 50 by the end of the year.

Canada, AB & SK: Saskatchewan government says Alberta not playing fair when it comes to craft beer markup
|
The Saskatchewan government says Alberta is not playing fair when it comes to changes on charges for craft and small brewery beer, iPolitics reported on July 18.
Starting Aug. 5, Alberta will charge a C$1.25-per-litre markup for all beer, regardless of the size of the company or where the beer is made.
Last fall, the government announced it was lowering the markup on beer from smaller breweries in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia as part of the New West Partnership trade agreement with the three provinces.
Don McMorris, minister for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, says the markup will hurt brewers, namely Great Western Brewing, which is based in Saskatoon.
McMorris says Alberta’s move is “off side” with the trade agreement.
He says Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall will raise the issue with Alberta Premier Rachel Notley at the premiers meeting in Whitehorse, Yukon, this week.
“We have a regional brewing incentive program and a craft brewing incentive program. Every province does. So if there is Big Rock in Alberta, they get the same as Great Western does. We look at it as trade compliant. It’s even for all breweries.
“This change in Alberta is significant for Saskatchewan’s craft industry and especially our regional brewer.”

USA, WI: Milwaukee enjoying brewery boom
|
Last week, MobCraft Brewery opened at 505 S. 5th St., making Milwaukee its permanent home after brewing in Madison for the last four years, TAP Milwaukee reported on July 15.
Last month, lines of people crowded an east side sidewalk to be the first to visit Good City Brewing, 2108 N. Farwell Ave.
Ten more breweries are opening throughout the metro area by the end of the year.
So why the sudden beer boom?
"It's just Milwaukee's time," said John Holl, editor of All About Beer magazine and a frequent visitor to Wisconsin. "There's a demand for better beer these days, and local beer."
What made Milwaukee famous a century ago is back — but with a modern twist. Where Schlitz, Pabst, Blatz and Miller once jockeyed for national domination, smart breweries today take advantage of their local nature.
The Brewers Association estimated that retail sales of craft beer reached $22.3 billion last year, with the number of craft breweries jumping from 3,676 in 2014 to 4,225 in 2015.
"People are going to farmers markets more," Holl said. "They're going back to butchers. They want to know where their food comes from. People want to know where their beer came from."

USA, MA: Castle Island Brewing Co. adding capacity just seven months after opening
|
Just seven months after opening, Castle Island Brewing Co. is already adding capacity to keep up with increasing demand in the market, Brewbound.com reported on July 18.
The company’s core beers — Candlepin and Keeper — have become mainstays amongst Greater Boston retailers, and are now available in over 650 locations. Growth for both products prompted the brewery to add three new cellar tanks, bringing production capacity to more than 9,000 barrels annually, a 50 percent increase.
“We have been flat out the past few months. We’ve been emptying tanks and refilling them the same day,” said Castle Island President, Adam Romanow. “This is great for capacity utilization, but we’re still running only one shift and that pace is difficult to keep up for long.”
Romanow says the company’s ranks have also grown to keep up with the volume, and Castle Island now employs 16 people, a sharp increase from the four-person team they launched with in December of 2015.

USA, MA: Notch Brewing Co. opens in Salem, Massachusetts
|
The brewery behind a popular line of session beers grandly opened in its new home in Salem over the weekend, debuting a space long in the making and effectively ending its era of contract brewing. Notch Brewing Co., founded by Chris Lohring (who previously started Tremont Brewery in Charlestown), put the finishing touches on its 283R Derby St. space in downtown Salem just in time for a weekend opening.
On July 16, Lohring and his team opened the doors to the newly minted Notch Brewery and Taproom, Dig Boston reported. The space features 14 taps, with beers available in half- and full-liter pours, plus 32-ounce crowlers and 16-ounce cans to go. Tasting sizes (a quarter liter) are also available, along with pretzels, bar snacks, and sausage. The taproom features communal tables and counter service, and there is a beer garden outside along the South River basin.
Lohring, who is a native of Salem, began the quest to focus on session beers (those with a 4.5 percent or lower ABV) in 2010, and six years later he has a specially designed space that caters to the elaborate session brewing process.

USA, CO: Longmont planning and zoning commission allows Bootstrap Brewing Company to open new brewing facility
|
The Longmont planning and zoning commission on July 20 decided to allow Bootstrap Brewing Company to move forward with plans to open a brewery and taproom at the old Times-Call warehouse, Longmont Times-Call reported.
Bootstrap owners Steve and Leslie Kaczeus want to open a second Bootstrap Brewing location at the warehouse at Second Avenue and S. Pratt Parkway. The building used to be owned by the Lehman family, who used it for storage. In 2015, the Lehmans sold it to Red Clay LLC, an entity registered to Oskar Blues Brewery founders.
The Kaczeuses plan to brew beer in the warehouse, with one to two trucks coming per week to pick up product. There will be a tasting room that will use an existing patio and possibly a space for food trucks, the couple told the commission.
They went before the commission on July 20 to ask for a site plan variance. Longmont law says breweries, due to potential odors and traffic, must be 250 feet away from residentially-zoned neighborhoods.
The warehouse building is in an industrial zone but within 250 feet of six lots zoned residential. The residents within 300 feet of the potential brewery were notified of the plans and raised no objections.

Africa: Global brewers betting on local low-cost beers to quench demand
|
International brewers in Africa are expanding their production of beers based on local ingredients, snapping up craft brewers and introducing more brands as low-cost beers gain popularity on the fast-growing but still poor continent, Reuters reported on July 15.
Diageo acquired a South African rival specialising in local beer last year, while SABMiller is opening new production lines in markets such as Zimbabwe where cheap competitors and illicit brews often out-sell more globally recognised competitors.
Diageo unit Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has pinned hopes on Ngule, or "Crown" in the Luganda language, that started production this year based on cassava, a tuber that is a staple food in the nation at the heart of Africa's Great Lakes region.
Ngule has captured 7 percent of the formal beer market in just five months after launch, UBL says, winning customers in dusty drinking holes in poor districts of Kampala like Hope Naturinda's bar, where it sells for 2,200 shillings ($0.65) per 500 millilitres, less than half the price of Diageo's renowned Guinness brand.
"More than half of my customers take Ngule now," said Naturinda. "It's affordable and very strong."

Australia: Thirst for craft beer spurring on an expansion for Australia’s biggest hop grower

Australia's insatiable taste for craft beer is spurring on an expansion for the country's biggest hop grower, ABC.net reported on July 15.
Making a brew is as much an art as a science for craft beer makers, with a careful combination of hot malted barley, hops and wheat key to the right batch.
Tasmania's Derwent Valley and Eurobin in Victoria are at the forefront of growth in the hop market, helping bubble along Australia's burgeoning craft beer industry.
Hop Products Australia is producing its biggest variety of hops to cater to the demand from a growing number of micro breweries, which has now topped about 400 nationally.
The company has followed the market trend by moving away from the bitter hops favoured by generations past, and is looking to the craft hops of the future, where flavour rather than bitterness is preferred.
Hop Products Australia is increasing its hop fields by half to keep up with consumer demand.
"We're harvesting 230 hectares this year and that's about the area that we've had in production in the past, although it's increased in terms of the main varieties … that we are producing," farm manager Oliver Ward said.

Heineken CEO Jean-François van Boxmeer spent his formative years in Africa, learning that emerging markets are the future for European brands. To date, his unique insights have paid off, EuropeanCEO reported on July 15.
The UK’s internal debate over its EU membership often attempted to counterpoise the idea of either selling to Europe, or stepping out into the world to trade with emerging markets. Europe was often portrayed by the Leave campaign as a place of yesteryear, and the suggestion was that UK businesses would find better trading prospects outside of the union. Europe’s market was not quite painted as irrelevant, but as less and less important in a world of rapidly growing emerging markets. The Remain campaign, on the other hand, argued that access to these growing emerging markets in Africa and Asia could be better achieved as part of a wider union.
Whichever side of that debate will ultimately be proven correct remains to be seen. Malaysia: Heineken Malaysia Bhd considering launch of more non-alcoholic products

Heineken Malaysia Bhd is considering coming out with more non-alcoholic products to offset the impact of the increase in excise duty, which currently is reportedly the third highest in the world, The Edge Markets reported on July 19.
Its managing director Hans Essaadi said there are various opportunities to look at with regard to non-alcoholic or low alcoholic products. “Historically, we stayed away from the non-alcoholic segment, but with the revised excise tax in place and consumer trend that we are seeing, we need to explore,” he told reporters during the group’s financial results briefing at its Sungei Way brewery on July 18.
On March 1, the government revised the excise duty structure by eliminating ad valorem tax, which effectively resulted in a 10% to 12% hike in excise duty on malt beer. It also raised the legal purchasing age for alcoholic beverages from 18 to 21 years, effective December 2017.
Essaadi, however, said any new products from the non-alcoholic segment will only be realised next year.
The only non-alcoholic product that the group is selling now is Malta, a light carbonated beverage.

China is one of the biggest beer markets worldwide and is in constant competition with the US in terms of world rankings. Germany’s HVG Hopfenverwertungsgenossenschaft e.G. recognizes this potential and is currently active on the Chinese market with a three-year information campaign co-financed by the EU, Craft Beer World reported on July 15.
Together with the hop-growing associations from the German growing regions of Tettnang, Elbe-Saale, and Hallertau, as well as the producer cooperative HVG Spalt, the campaign led by HVG Hopfenverwertungsgenossenschaft e.G. explains the merits of European products and particularly the high quality of German hops, and provides information about their labelling.
Demand for hops in China is on the rise: Germany sold more than 1,000 tons of hop pellets to China in 2015 alone. Hops from Germany fulfil important expectations in terms of food safety, quality, and control. Almost 100 percent of German hops fall under the quality regulations of the European Union, such as the protected geographical indication (PGI) or protected designation of origin (PDO). South Africa: A growing group of women staking their place in South Africa’s brewing industry

A revolution is brewing in South Africa. Women are reclaiming their traditional role of making beer, Forbes Woman Africa reported.
“Back in the days, brewing was a female thing. Over time it became industrialized and became a male thing. But, in the African culture, beers are still made by women only. In South Africa, more and more females are becoming part of beer brewing. It does make you proud that you are taking the whole thing back to where it started,” says Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela, the brewmaster and part owner at Brewhogs, a microbrewery in Kyalami, north of Johannesburg.
The difference with women brewing beer today is that they are bringing in the money.
“It’s extra nice when you’re making money from doing something that you like,” says Nxusani-Mawela with a chuckle.
Inside the brewery, it’s noisy, humid and the distinct smell of malts hangs in the air. It’s an environment that some might feel uncomfortable in; Nxusani-Mawela seems as if she’s at home.
Becoming one of the most respected brewers in the industry was not initially part of Nxusani-Mawela’s plans. She didn’t even drink beer.

Taiwan: Heineken Asia Pacific launches its Tiger Beer in Taiwan

Heineken Asia Pacific has launched its Tiger Beer in Taiwan, according to a press release issued by the brewery.
The company recently invited Nine One One, a Taiwanese hip hop group, to promote the world-famous brand and will run a series of TV promotional ads, aiming to make Tiger Beer the most influential heavyweight in the Taiwan beer market this summer.
Since its roaring debut in Singapore in 1932, Tiger Beer has been a frequent gold medal winner at over 50 world beer competitions and is popular with consumers in as many as 64 countries in the world.
Kenneth Choo, an executive regional director of Heineken Asia Pacific, said that Tiger Beer has recorded annual growth of over 20 percent and is expected to become a shining star among Heineken's beer lines. "We show high regard for the Taiwan market, and expect our newly launched Tiger Beer to bring consumers brand-new taste and shock. We vow to make Tiger Beer rank among the top three brands in Taiwan's beer market by the end of 2020, which is our clear-cut goal," Choo said at the press conference.
