HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY
NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR
DRY HOPPING PURPOSES
ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.
Klie, R.: Feasibility and Optimization of a Novel Desorption/ Absorption Process for
Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference,
April 2016, Ghent.

Canada: Beer sales total 22.7 mln hl in 2015
|
In 2015, Canadians enjoyed 22,707,133 hectolitres of beer. Canadian beer accounts for 84% of this figure, totalling 18,973,357 hl, an increase of 0.2% compared to 2014, Canada Beer association said in its latest report.
Imported beer sales increased by 4.5% in 2015 to a total of 3,733,776 hl. Since 2010, the Canadian beer category has declined by 663,865 hl or 3.4%.
The number of licensed breweries in Canada has risen almost 108% over the past five years to 644 operating in 2015. Over half of these breweries make their products in Ontario and Québec.
Increasing can sales show the container rose to a 54.7% share of the domestic packaged beer market in 2015. Draught sales remained unchanged and bottle sales fell 4.3 percentage points to 35.4%.
Domestic consumption of Canadian and imported beer in 2015 stood at 63.34 litres per person based on total population. At the provincial level, per capita consumption is highest in Newfoundlan at 77.32 litres. Québec and Alberta have the second and third highest per capita consumption at 71.91 and 66.23 litres respectively.

Japan: Asahi Group Holdings expects first-half net income to beat initial estimates
|
Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., Japan’s biggest beer maker by market value, said net income for the six months ended June 30 probably beat its initial estimate by 44 percent on strong sales of its non-alcoholic beverages in its home market, and better-than-expected performance overseas, Bloomberg reported on July 26.
First-half net income rose to 28.5 billion yen ($274 million) from the forecast of 19.8 billion yen given in February, Asahi said in a preliminary earnings statement on July 26. The brewer raised operating profit forecast by 18 percent to 52.4 billion yen, and revenue forecast by 0.4 percent to 863.7 billion yen, also citing lower raw material costs and improved utilization of assets.
“This kind of upward revision is rare for Asahi so it is pretty positive for its shares,” said Satoshi Fujiwara, an analyst at Nomura Securities Co. The Tokyo-based brewer “is improving the product mix with a bigger focus on coffee and tea, which are more profitable than water, for example.”
Asahi is seeking expansion overseas to counter slumping beer consumption in Japan, and in April clinched a 2.55 billion ($2.8 billion) euros deal to buy the Peroni, Grolsch and Meantime beer brands in Europe from Anheuser-Busch InBev NV. Domestically, the

USA: First-half craft beer output up 8%, number of brewers reaches record high of 4,656 as of June 30
|
Craft brewers are still growing, according to new mid-year data released by the Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers. American craft beer production volume increased eight percent during the first half of the year.
“While the craft brewing industry is entering a period of maturation, most markets are not near saturation,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “As craft’s base gets larger, as with any industry, it becomes more difficult for it to grow at the same percentage rate. Yet there is still tremendous dynamism reflected in eight percent growth for craft. Production growth of small and independent craft brewers continues to be one of the main bright spots for domestic beer in the U.S. Even in a more competitive market, for the vast majority of small and independent brewers, opportunities still exist.”
As of June 30, a record high of 4,656 breweries were operating in the U.S, an increase of 917 breweries over the same time period of the previous year. Additionally, there were approximately 2,200 breweries in planning. Craft brewers currently employ an estimated 121,843 full-time and part-time workers in a variety of roles including many of manufacturing

In the last five years, Bulgaria’s breweries launched more than 42 new beer brands and types. Last year saw the increase in popularity of unpasteurized and unfiltered beer.
According to local brewers, Bulgaria’s beer market increased 2% last year versus 2014.

UK: Craft beer may benefit from Brexit but big brewers may lose out
|
As businesses scramble to get their heads around the ramifications of leaving the European Union (EU), the beer industry is one that analysts predict will have split fortunes, with craft benefiting from Brexit and big brewers losing out in the face of unknown trading laws, The Drum reported on July 25.
With production split between the UK and internationally, many brewers such as Heineken and the newly merged SABMiller and AB InBev may have to re-examine their business models and shift from imported to licensed beer depending on the positioning and consumer perception of the brand according to a newly released report by Rabobank. Currently, around 18 per cent of the UK’s beer market is imported, while 13 per cent of the production volume is exported.
At Heineken, the brewer is still trying to fully understand the implications of the vote, but played down the impact it could have on its import/export business. Speaking a spokeswoman for the business said: “Heineken is a truly international business, and we work successfully within a huge variety of constitutions and political frameworks. Our business in the UK is strongly focused on UK consumers. Imports and exports are a relatively small proportion of that business and

Vietnam: Deputy CEO of scandal-hit Sabeco likely to become its CEO
|
The Deputy CEO of the scandal-hit Sabeco seems likely to become CEO of the beer giant after the position remained vacant for months and led to its recent leadership crisis, VietNamNet Bridge reported on July 22.
Mr. Le Hong Xanh, Deputy CEO of the Saigon Beer Alcohol-Beverage Joint Stock Corporation (Sabeco) was named as a candidate for the CEO position in the brewer’s proposal sent to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) on July 20, according to sources close to the matter.
If the proposal is approved, Mr. Xanh, born in 1957, who is also a member of Sabeco’s Board of Management, will take over the CEO position that has been temporarily filled by Chairman Mr. Vo Thanh Ha since January.
Mr. Ha holding the two positions is believed to be contrary to regulations for the Law of Enterprises.
The proposal raised some eyebrows, however, as Mr. Xanh will retire due to his age in July 2017, creating concern that his year or so in office will do nothing to help the corporation’s business performance.
But some see it as a good move. “It is necessary to have an experienced leader like Mr. Xanh at Sabeco for the time being,” Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai,

Japan: Asahi, Kirin to transport beer across Japan jointly next year
|
Asahi Breweries and Kirin Brewery will join forces next year in transporting beer across Japan by rail, a mode that is less expensive than trucks and more environmentally friendly, Nikkei Asian Review reported on July 27.
Under an arrangement to be announced on July 28, the rivals will work with Japan Freight Railway and Nippon Express to deliver beer to the Hokuriku region along the Sea of Japan coast.
Output from Asahi's Suita brewery near Osaka and Kirin's Kobe brewery will go by Nippon Express trucks to a JR Freight depot, and then by train to depots in Hokuriku. Nippon Express trucks will take over from there to deliver the products to wholesalers and other customers.
Rail shipments from the Osaka-Kobe area to Ishikawa Prefecture will begin in early 2017, with shipments to Toyama Prefecture to start as soon as that autumn.
The Asahi Group Holdings and Kirin Holdings units have no breweries in Hokuriku. Shipping beer by truck has become expensive owing to the long distances covered and driver shortages.
Rail transportation is expected to cut the cost of Hokuriku-bound shipments by a few percent. Asahi and Kirin will consider expanding the arrangement to other regions where they lack production facilities.
