HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR DRY HOPPING PURPOSES

ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent mass transfer was predicted using two different approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response surface modelling. The methods offer the following advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using response surface methodology was clearly superior as compared to calculating the mass transfer using thermodynamic approximations.

Klie, R.: Feasibility and Optimization of a Novel Desorption/ Absorption Process for Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference, April 2016, Ghent.

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors buys Hop Valley Brewing in Oregon
Fresh off last week’s purchase of Georgia-based Terrapin Beer Company, MillerCoors, via its Tenth and Blake craft and import division, on July 29 announced it has acquired a majority stake in Oregon’s Hop Valley Brewing, Brewbound.com reported.

Specific financial terms were not disclosed and the transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2016.

In a conversation with Brewbound, Tenth and Blake CEO Scott Whitley said Hop Valley’s brands; its geographic location, and its leadership team drove MillerCoors’ interest in acquiring a majority interest in the company.

“This is the perfect example of a strategy we have been working to execute over the last year,” Whitley said. “What we look for first are complementary brands in our portfolio. Right now, we don’t have much in the way of hop-forward offerings to offer consumers.”

For Hop Valley, a sale to MillerCoors will mean broader distribution of its beer throughout the U.S., greater share of mind with wholesalers, and better access to raw materials, co-founder Chuck Hare said.

“This craft business is getting more and more competitive,” he said. “The further we get away from home, the harder it is to sell our beer. We are really beginning to see how hard it is to ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Carlsberg UK adds new craft and specialty beers to its portfolio
Carlsberg UK has unveiled its new portfolio of world, craft and speciality beers available to the on-trade, including a new craft cider section, Bar Magazine reported on July 28.

The Crafted line-up features 14 new draught beers, 17 new packaged beers and an extended seasonal range, available only at certain times of the year.

Responding to market trends, it also offers an up-weighted canned beer selection and a craft cider section for the first time – two sub-sectors which are fast gaining traction with consumers.

The range includes the latest Carlsberg UK launches: American pale ale Shed Head from the Backyard Brewery in Sweden, Herefordshire craft cider Bad Apple, and the premium Belgian beer Grimbergen Blonde.

New additions for 2016/17 see a focus on British craft brews including Hiver, a honey blonde beer with an ABV of 5% made using Challenger and UK Cascade hops, and Curious Brew – a premium lager brewed by leading English winemaker Chapel Down, re-fermented with champagne yeast to give it a distinctive, clean and refreshing taste.

Also new to the Crafted line-up is Fort Smith, an American pale ale from the UK’s Rooster’s Brewing Co which has a reputation for creating ground-breaking, hop-forward pale ales that showcase exciting hops ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Panel confirms Vijay Mallya’s position as chairman of United Breweries
Vijay Mallya's position as chairman of United Breweries doesn't seem to be under threat, at least for now, after a panel that included a former chief justice of India informed the company's board that he is well within his rights and in compliance with all regulations to continue, The Economic Times reported on July 28.

The UB board had sought legal opinion from the panel following a Securities & Exchange Board of India notification that said any person named wilful defaulter cannot be nominated to board position. Former Chief Justice VN Khare was a member of the panel.

Mallya as chairman and promoter of UB doesn't require nomination to be on the board and hence doesn't come under purview of the Sebi regulation, executives with knowledge of the panel's views said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The panel opined that the businessman also complies with Sebi, Reserve Bank of India and Company Law Board rules to be the chairman of UB, they said.

UB's board includes those nominated by Heineken, the Dutch beer maker that holds largest stake in the company, as well as independent members such as Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CY Pal and Sunil Alagh. The company, ...More info on site
