HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY
NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR
DRY HOPPING PURPOSES
ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.

Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference,
April 2016, Ghent.

USA: MillerCoors buys Hop Valley Brewing in Oregon
|
Fresh off last week’s purchase of Georgia-based Terrapin Beer Company, MillerCoors, via its Tenth and Blake craft and import division, on July 29 announced it has acquired a majority stake in Oregon’s Hop Valley Brewing, Brewbound.com reported.
Specific financial terms were not disclosed and the transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2016.
In a conversation with Brewbound, Tenth and Blake CEO Scott Whitley said Hop Valley’s brands; its geographic location, and its leadership team drove MillerCoors’ interest in acquiring a majority interest in the company.
“This is the perfect example of a strategy we have been working to execute over the last year,” Whitley said. “What we look for first are complementary brands in our portfolio. Right now, we don’t have much in the way of hop-forward offerings to offer consumers.”
For Hop Valley, a sale to MillerCoors will mean broader distribution of its beer throughout the U.S., greater share of mind with wholesalers, and better access to raw materials, co-founder Chuck Hare said.
“This craft business is getting more and more competitive,” he said. “The further we get away from home, the harder it is to sell our beer. We are really beginning to see how hard it is to

USA, MD: Attaboy Beer Co. preparing to open in Frederick in December
|
Brian and Carly Ogden wanted to open a brewery in Baltimore. In fact, the couple had a space all set up to move into until after six months of work, the deal fell through, Baltimore Business Journal reported on July 25.
With equipment ordered and pieces moving, the duo had to find a new place quick and that led them to Frederick. And this December, the Ogdens will open Attaboy Beer Co. along the Carroll Creek.
The couple had originally settled on a place in Remington. The location was ideal because it was close to their home in Hampden and in a growing food and culture scene. But during final lease negotiations, the landlord backed out unexpectedly.
"What took six to seven months here took two months from beginning to end [in Frederick]," Carly Ogden said. "We very quickly had to work backwards and opened up the search because we needed to find a place very quickly."
Attaboy Beer will open at 400 Sagner Ave. in Suite 400 in Frederick. Along the Carroll Creek, the brewery is near a biking and walking path as well as has adequate parking, Brian Ogden said.
Brian and Carly met in San Francisco seven years ago and connected over

Canada, ON: Hops taking off in Ontario
|
Hops are taking off in Ontario. Eighty hop yards of the beer flavouring flower are growing in the province this year. A huge jump from four years ago when there will only five hop yards in Ontario, CBC News reported on July 25.
A boom in the craft beer market is responsible for growing interest in the crop. There are currently more than 60 craft breweries across the province — including at least eight in Toronto alone, according to the industry group Ontario Craft Brewers.
But don't expect to get local hops in a local brew by this harvest season. The president of the Ontario Hop Growers' Association says mass production is a long way off.
"We figure it's going to take five to 10 years before we can even begin to meet the demand of a major craft brewer," said Hugh Brown. "The brewers import almost 99 per cent of the hops they use from the U.S. and Europe."
That's because hops — like wine — take patience. It's a slow-growing, temperamental crop that takes about three years to mature.
Two brothers in Elgin County, about 50 kilometres south of London, Ont., are nearing the end of that process. Hop cropping is

USA, IN: Chapman’s Brewing Co. to add a second brewery in Columbia City
|
Just two months after opening its tap room in downtown Fort Wayne inside Fortezza Coffee, Chapman’s Brewing Co. has announced that it’s expanding again, The Journal Gazette reported on July 27.
The Angola, IN-based brewery will add a second brewery, as well as a taproom, in downtown Columbia City.
Chapman’s will remodel the former Watering Can and CC Deli Building at 118 W Van Buren St., and the building will serve as a research and development facility where new craft beer recipes will be created as well as beers unique to Whitley County, Chapman’s founder Scott Fergusson says.
“Columbia City has a rich brewing history, with the Walter-Raupfer Brewery having the capacity to make over 2 million pints of beer a year,” he says. “Columbia City’s downtown is perfect for Chapman’s; our friends and neighbors can enjoy a pint or growler of the best local beer around.”
Chapman’s Brewing Co. was founded in 2012 and began production in October 2013.

USA, AZ: Dove Mountain Brewing Co. to launch in Dove Mountain soon
|
Dove Mountain's airy Mexican restaurant Lo Esencial is currently undergoing a remodel and will reopen as a brewpub in the next few months. The new Dove Mountain Brewing Co. will feature local craft brews as well as five to six private label beers, Arizona Daily Star reported on July 27.
When it opens, the building at 12130 N. Dove Mountain Blvd. will sport a "rustic ambiance" with a brick facade and stainless steel vats, according to an email sent out by the restaurant. The space will also serve food.
This is the second concept change for the restaurant in the last few years. Owner Kinney Johnson ran the space as Dove Mountain Grill for nearly five years, until he transformed it into Lo Esencial in December of 2013.

USA, CO: Three women to open Lady Justice Brewing as fundraising tool for local charities
|
Three women are planning to open a tiny brewery, Lady Justice Brewing, in the small Denver suburb of Mountain View this August that will serve as fundraising tool for local charities. And instead of a tap room, the brewery will offer memberships, delivering beer to customers once a month, Westword reported on July 25.
This business model is known as a community-supported brewery — and is very similar to community supported agriculture, CSA, through which small farms deliver produce to members on a regular basis. The setup allows the farms to have a built-in clientele and guaranteed funding. Community-supported breweries are fairly rare across the country but have seen some success.
Lady Justice’s goal, though, will be to donate 100 percent of its profits (everything over the cost of making the beer) to various Colorado organizations that promote “the status and opportunity of women and girls.” Money will be awarded via a grant-making process.
“This is sort of an experiment,” says Betsy Lay, who will serve as the head brewer for Lady Justice. “We are brewing beer in order to give money back. We are hoping this will be a good match for people who like to do that. So far, the response

The Crafted line-up features 14 new draught beers, 17 new packaged beers and an extended seasonal range, available only at certain times of the year.

India: Panel confirms Vijay Mallya’s position as chairman of United Breweries
|
Vijay Mallya's position as chairman of United Breweries doesn't seem to be under threat, at least for now, after a panel that included a former chief justice of India informed the company's board that he is well within his rights and in compliance with all regulations to continue, The Economic Times reported on July 28.
The UB board had sought legal opinion from the panel following a Securities & Exchange Board of India notification that said any person named wilful defaulter cannot be nominated to board position. Former Chief Justice VN Khare was a member of the panel.
Mallya as chairman and promoter of UB doesn't require nomination to be on the board and hence doesn't come under purview of the Sebi regulation, executives with knowledge of the panel's views said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The panel opined that the businessman also complies with Sebi, Reserve Bank of India and Company Law Board rules to be the chairman of UB, they said.
UB's board includes those nominated by Heineken, the Dutch beer maker that holds largest stake in the company, as well as independent members such as Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CY Pal and Sunil Alagh. The company,
