ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.

Fund manager Aberdeen Asset Management reiterated on July 29 it would vote against the takeover of SABMiller by Belgian rival AB InBev after the company said it backed the revised terms, Reuters reported.
However, it said it welcomed the SAB board's decision to treat leading shareholders Altria and Bevco as a separate class of shareholder.
"This acknowledges the reality of the situation and will help to ensure that the views of the rest of the investor base have due weight," Aberdeen said, although it continued to dislike the deal structure and thought it undervalued SABMiller.
"We would welcome other investors who value good corporate governance and recognize the superior value from continuing to hold SABMiller as a standalone entity voting in a similar fashion."

Italy: Italian beer exports quadruple over the past ten years
|
Italian beer exports have quadrupled over the past ten years, reaching a new record in 2015 with a value of €183 million and double digit growth in Northern Europe, ESM reported on August 3.
According to a report by Italian farmers’ association, Coldiretti, based on Istat data, the export boom is present in practically all countries, from Germany (+49%), the Netherlands (+49%) to the UK (+10%), while in Belgium, Italian beer purchases have grown tenfold.
With the arrival of summer, beer consumption is on the rise in Italy, registering a record 6 per cent growth of purchases, partly accounted for by Italian craft beers.
A decade ago there were a little over 30 craft microbreweries in Italy, a figure that has now risen to about 1,000 for a production estimated at 45 million litres.
The new craft production is very diversified: from beer flavoured with hemp to the Apulian artichoke pale yellow, sour cherries and red radicchio or rice.
There are over 23 million beer drinkers in Italy, with an annual per capita consumption of 29 litres, with ample margins for growth compared to countries such as the Czech Republic (144 litres per capita), Austria (107.8), Germany (105), Ireland (85.6), Luxembourg (85), and Spain (82).

Myanmar: Myanmar attracting foreign brewers with its exceptional growth prospects

Although Buddhist temperance and decades of economic stagnation had curbed beer demand in Myanmar, the booming Southeast Asian country is attracting a slew of foreign breweries with its exceptional growth prospects, Nikkei Asian Review reported on August 3.
Japan's Kirin Holdings and Dutch company Heineken are among those flocking to the market, which was opened after the democratization process began in 2011.
Kirin, which acquired local beer giant Myanmar Brewery last year, is aggressively making inroads with such premium offerings as the flagship Ichiban brand. Heineken, meanwhile, is planning an investment to boost local production capacity this year.
Affluent customers pour into Shan Yoe Yar, an upscale Yangon restaurant, nightly, escaping the humid, hot monsoon weather. The eatery started carrying Kirin's Ichiban draft beer in June. A 31-year-old car dealership manager says he enjoys the beer with friends, noting the beverage's smoothness. Kirin markets Ichiban as a premium 100% malt offering. Without promotional discounts, the beer is priced at 3,000 kyat ($2.53) per mug - double that of popular local offering Myanmar Beer, sold by Myanmar Brewery. But well-off people who like to try new things are interested, according to the restaurant's manager.

Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka to allow Lion Brewery to import beer at lower duty
|
Sri Lanka will allow Lion Brewery, franchise holder of Carlsberg in the country, beer imports at lower duty, following flood damage to its production facilities in Colombo, a report said.
Sri Lanka's The Sunday Times newspaper said customs duty for beer with alcohol of less than 5 percent has been cut to Rs129 per litre from Rs500 and for beer with over 5 percent alcohol to Rs246 from Rs500.
Lion Beer has said that it had arranged with Carlsberg group breweries to produce its stuff.
Due to high tax protection, Sri Lanka does not import a large volume of beer. Alcohol and cigarettes are also import tax protected allowing large near monopolies to emerge.
With imports going up, government import duty revenues can go up over the next few months. The newspaper said about 5 million litres of beer could be imported under the concession. The concession appeared to be exclusively given to the firm, the newspaper said.
Beer also draws high excise duties, regardless of whether it is imported or not, with beer drinkers among top taxpayers in the country, along with cigarette smokers.

UK: Yield average for winter barley below five-year average
|
The overall 2016 harvest yield average for winter barley is under the five-year average in the United Kingdom, according to AHDB Cereals.
A total of seven trials in Devon, Hereford, North and East Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk have reported their results.
The overall yield average of 8.79 t/ha for 2016 is below the five-year average of 9.30 t/ha.
Looking at the annual trends, the average yield remains lower than farmers have seen in 2014 and 2015, but up on 2012 and 2013.
Yields are represented as a percentage of the control varieties, which this year are Cassata, Volume, KWS Meridian, SY Venture and KWS Glacier.
The average of the yields from these varieties is represented as 100%.
The 2016 values only show yields based on one season from seven sites.
The five-year average is a better measure of variety performance over the past five seasons (2012–2016).
In 2016 so far, the six-row feed varieties top the yields. Six-row hybrids Belfry and Bazooka top the yield table with 113% of the control varieties, with Volume also performing well at 107%.
KWS Meridian remains in trial as a six-row conventional variety control and has performed well at 109%.

Japan: Imported whiskies expanding presence in Japan
|
Imported whiskies are expanding their presence in Japan amid a boom that is creating shortages of domestic spirits and increasing demand for diversity, The Japan Times reported on July 29.
Sparked by the resurgence of the highball cocktail, the boom is thinning stocks of Japanese products that grew popular after a TV drama told the story of a major local brand.
Importers, including top Japanese brewers, are now trying to promote overseas brands to maintain momentum for Japan’s first whiskey fad in about 30 years.
On Aug. 23, Kirin Brewery Co. will add Green Label to its local lineup for Johnnie Walker. The scotch, matured for at least 15 years, will be targeted at “relatively young people who want to try tastes other than Japanese whiskies,” a Kirin official said.
Kirin, the agent for both Johnnie Walker and White Horse, is aiming to double its 2015 sales of foreign brands by 2020.
Suntory Spirits Ltd. opened a bar in Minato Ward, Tokyo, in July, offering whiskies from around the world. Hibiya Bar Whisky-S III offers a sampler of five whiskies plus cuisine from each distillery’s location.
“We hope customers will discover their own preferences,” a Suntory Spirits official said.
