HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY
NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR
DRY HOPPING PURPOSES
ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.

Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference,

USA: Barley prices flat for new crop but this may change if weather affects corn and soybean production
|
Barley prices are flat for new crop, but prices could change if weather problems affect corn and soybean production in August, Farm & Ranch Guide reported on August 5 citing Frayne Olson, NDSU crops economist/marketing specialist.
“Soybean markets are extremely volatile. Soybean yields are a more important fact in what is happening to prices,” Olson said.
There are three ways the U.S. gets grain: annual production, imports and carryover.
Carryover is the big one concerning markets for most grain crops, and there is carryover in all stocks.
With barley, there is still an uncertainty with how many bushels will be produced this year and the quality of those bushels. But barley buyers don’t have to worry about where to find barley because of very good production last year.
The USDA divides barley into feed, exports, seed usage and food, alcohol and industrial use.
“The vast majority of the food, alcohol and industrial use is for malt,” Olson said.
The long-term trend in consumption of barley is down, and acreage of barley has dropped, along with feed usage. Producers feed more corn than barley because it is more available.
The barley market moved from the 80s when there was some 600 million bushels, down to the 200 million bushels

USA, WA: 7 Seas Brewing planning second brewery opening in Tacoma on August 10
|
In the same downtown Tacoma building where Heidelberg beer once was bottled, a South Sound brewery will produce its own sour ales, India pale ales, pilsners and a broad lineup of other craft beers, The News Tribune reported on August 5.
Gig Harbor craft brewery 7 Seas Brewing will open its new brewery and taproom on August 10 in a building previously home to part of the Heidelberg Brewery.
The building at 2101 Jefferson Ave. once housed the Jet Equipment company and more recently stored artwork for Chihuly Studio.
This will be a second brewery and taproom for 7 Seas and the second time co-owners Mike Runion and Travis Guterson have expanded production of the brewery they founded in 2009. In 2012, they moved to a former QFC store near the Gig Harbor waterfront, but quickly maxed out the 11,000-square-foot building.
Runion said the brewery’s never been able to meet its demand. The brewers also couldn’t find a building in Gig Harbor big enough for their ambitious production plan, so they wound up in Tacoma’s historic brewery district.
While 7 Seas produced 8,000 barrels in 2015, Runion expects the 80,000-square-foot building will allow the level of production they wanted.
“This site will allow 80,000- to-100,000-barrel

USA: Beer continues to edge out wine and liquor as America’s preferred alcoholic drink
|
Beer continues to edge out wine and liquor as the preferred alcoholic drink for adult Americans, according to the latest Gallup poll.
Forty-three percent of US adult drinkers say they drink beer most often, the highest percentage recorded since 2002, when 44 percent said the same.
Meanwhile, 32 percent of adult Americans say they prefer wine and 20 percent say they prefer liquor.
Beer has been the top choice for adult Americans who drink alcoholic beverages in the past three years, Gallup said.
Generally, 65 percent of adult Americans say they drink alcoholic beverages, while a quarter of them occasionally drink too much, found the poll.
“Drinking remains a popular pastime for most Americans. For the nearly two in three Americans who imbibe, beer is consistently the preferred beverage of choice,” Gallup said in a report.
Americans’ drink of choice differs by gender, as it has since the 1990s, Gallup found.
Half of female American drinkers prefer wine, based on combined data from 2010 to 2016, while beer and liquor tie as their next-favored beverage, at 23 percent.
Meanwhile, 54 percent of male drinkers name beer as their preferred drink, followed by liquor, 22 percent, and wine, 18 percent, according to Gallup.
It found that while one in four

Canada & EU: Canada's mounted police force emerges as one of the surprise bidders for SABMiller’s European beer brands
|
Canada's mounted police force has emerged as one of the surprise bidders in the race for SABMiller’s £4 bln ($5.22 bln) Central and Eastern European beer brands.
PSP Investments, a Canadian pension fund manager which invests on behalf of the mounted police force, is one of a number of bidders for a portfolio of beers which are being sold off as part of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s takeover of SABMiller, according to a report in the Sunday Times newspaper.
According to the report, PSP has looked at a range of targets to build its business.
In February this year, PSP joined a consortium in a bid for London’s City Airport, but lost out to rival Canadian pension fund managers including Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.
PSP’s interest in SABMiller’s beers is a surprise as the pension fund is usually interested in investing in infrastructure projects which are low risks.
PSP Investments declined to comment.
AB InBev offered to offload SABMiller’s beer brands in Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Poland in April to help ease regulators concerns over the deal which has been dubbed “megabrew”.
Last week, AB InBev and SABMiller said the merger is expected to be completed on 10 October.

USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance opens its new Widmer Brothers innovation brewery in Portland
|
Craft Brew Alliance has officially opened its new Widmer Brothers innovation brewery, relocating the small-batch operation from a cramped corner of Portland’s Moda Center to the company’s primary brewing facility about one mile away, Brewbound.com reported on August 9.
First announced last April, the new innovation brewery will enable CBA to conduct research and development, experiment with emerging styles and give Widmer brewers a chance to collaborate with other food and beverage industry entrepreneurs.
“We have some incredible collaborations out of the gate,” said newly hired innovation brewmaster Tom Bleigh, who came to the company from nearby Hopworks Urban Brewery, where he served as director of brewery operations.
The new R&D space was part of the company’s $10 million Portland brewery expansion — which will bring total capacity at that facility to 750,000 barrels — and includes a new 10-barrel brewhouse, two 10-barrel brite beer tanks and nine 10-barrel fermentation tanks. When running at full capacity, the new space is capable of producing about 1,500 barrels annually, the company said.
In addition to moving the innovation brewery back to its main Russell Street brewing campus, CBA also purchased a Crowler machine — which will be used to fill and seal 32 oz. cans of

USA, TX: Bearded Fox Brewing Co. to build its new facility in Tomball
|
After months of scouting a location in northwest Houston, the owners of Bearded Fox Brewing Co. have announced they will begin construction on their new facility in Tomball, Community Impact Newspaper reported on August 9.
The brewery will be located at 11729 Spring Cypress Road, Tomball, in the former location of Raw Gym. Co-owner Mike Sturm said the company is in the process of obtaining licensing and permitting, but plans to begin moving into the facility within the next two weeks. An exact opening date is still to be determined.
Sturm said he and fellow owners Marcus Garcia, Steve Early, Trey Looney, Randall Clark and Russell Klasel originally planned to open the brewery in Cypress but were waiting for the right space to open.
“We’ve been searching for a location for the past several months now,” Sturm said. “We are extremely excited to find this location.”
Sturm said the brewery will be used only for production at first—distributing kegs of craft beer to local bars and restaurants—but there are plans to add a taproom that will be open to the public.
“We plan to be up and brewing pretty quick I hope,” Sturm said.

USA, IL: Hop farming has yet to fully take root in Illinois
|
The hop farming craze has yet to fully take root in Illinois even though Chicago’s craft beer scene is rich and growing.
Michigan will have planted more than 800 acres of the crop by the end of 2016, while Illinois only grows 30 acres of hops, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Hop farms have popped up throughout the Midwest as the craft brewing trend has increased the demand for the crop.
But unlike in Michigan, there’s no state university-coordinated effort to break down potential business barriers. There’s also no research underway to give Illinois farmers a competitive edge by determining the best varieties of hops to grow.
Additionally, hop farming yields more revenue per acre than commodities, but it requires significant investment to begin.
“There’s a hesitancy to invest in the land itself when we’re not in a proven market,” said Rich Hauser, president of Bier Blume Farms in Lena. “So we’re trying to prove the market and show that we’re producing high-quality hops and that people want them.”
In its third growing season, Hauser said the farm expects to harvest about 3,000 pounds of hops from 3 acres of land, all of which will be sold to local breweries.
Hauser said his future plans include expanding the

USA, AZ: Barrio Brewing Co. to open at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport by the end of the year
|
A Tucson-based restaurant and brewery will soon open at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, AZ Central reported on August 6.
Barrio Brewing Co. will be located in the General Aviation Center and is expected to debut by the end of the year, though a firm opening date is not set. The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and will serve alcohol.
Gateway CEO Brian O’Neill said it will be open to the general public and travelers. He said students from nearby Arizona State University Polytechnic campus and Chandler-Gilbert Community College likely are clientele that will increase the business’ popularity.
Barrio’s brand is licensed by Mesa’s Kind Hospitality Inc., which will operate the airport facility.
Kind Hospitality also runs establishments such as Paradise Bakery at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and at Gateway. The company pitched a Barrio’s location to the Airport Authority Board of Directors in response to a request for proposals for the space. The board signed a 10-year lease on July 21.
The request followed the retirement of the owners of the previous occupant, Flight Deck Cafe.
The goal of Kind Hospitality’s pitch was to suggest “something attractive ... to bring people to Mesa Gateway,” said Nava Singam, CEO of the licensing

USA, FL: Props Craft Brewery to open new facility in Fort Walton Beach
|
A Fort Walton Beach craft brewery is expanding on the Gulf Coast and beyond, The Pulse reported on August 9.
Props Craft Brewery announced this week its local expansion into the mass manufacturing and distribution craft beer market by opening a new facility in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
The brewery will open its new taproom and small brewing facility later this year at 125 Lovejoy Road in a nearly 10,000 square-foot building within the Fort Walton Beach Commerce and Technology Park.
Since beginning operations in 2011 as a small craft beer bar, Props Craft Brewery has doubled its footprint with recent expansions at its existing taproom in downtown Fort Walton Beach. The expansion announced on August 9 will allow the company to move into a regional production brewery and meet the demand for their handcrafted beer.
The company has netted more than $200,000 in public incentives for the project, including a more than $50,000 tax exemption in the form of an economic development ad valorem tax exemption, or EDATE. The Fort Walton Beach city council and Okaloosa County commissioners voted last year to approve the tax incentive package as part of an effort to keep the company from moving elsewhere.
Additionally, the company has

USA, VA: Champion Brewing Company to open brewpub in Richmond

Champion Brewing Company announced on August 6 its plans to open a brewpub in the Arts District of Richmond in partnership with Chef Jason Alley and partner Michele Jones of Pasture and Comfort restaurants, Brewbound.com reported.
The brewpub will serve beers brewed in-house and other staple beers from Champion, and Alley and Jones will operate ‘Sur Taco and Sandwich’ inside the pub, serving Southern-influenced tacos and tortas. The brewpub will be located on East Grace Street, with an estimated opening by year end 2016.
Champion’s President and Head Brewer Hunter Smith said on August 5, ‘”The Richmond market has been very supportive of our beers, particularly our experimental brews, since day one. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Jason and Michele and to produce exciting new beers alongside so many great brewers in Richmond.”
Said Alley, “We are so excited to work with Hunter in this new project. Michele and I both really appreciate what Champion has done in the Charlottesville market, and beyond, and we are so excited to debut our newest concept in this unique venue.”

USA, NH: Great Rhythm Brewing to open its doors in Portsmouth on August 13
|
Scott and Kristen Thornton will open the doors to Great Rhythm Brewing Company on Saturday, August 13 when they'll debut three new beers for sampling with a scenic views of the tidal river feeding North Mill Pond, Seacostonline.com reported on August 10.
In the nine months since they were granted a variance to open the brewery and tasting room off Bartlett Street, the Thorntons have transformed a rundown and abandoned fish-processing plant into a remarkable industrial space. They kept the ceilings high and added a pair of glass garage-style doors that can be opened to connect the beer tasting area to a grove of maple trees, the tidal river and shore birds. Long wood tables and cafe seating will accommodate up to 50 people, Scott Thornton said.
There's a bar area where four different Great Rhythm brews will be on tap and available in samples. Next to it, the brewing and canning operations are exposed so patrons can gaze at the large steel production vats while sampling the goods brewed inside them.
Scott Thornton said he and his wife wanted to open the space with windows and doors and worked with Winter Holben architects, known locally for the design concept

USA, WI: City Lights Brewing Co. aiming at November opening
|
City Lights Brewing Co. in Milwaukee’s Menomonee Valley is planning to open in November, and will launch with four core beers to be sold in cans, brewmaster and owner Jimmy Gohsman tells the Milwaukee Business Journal.
Work toward a fall opening for the brewery and taproom at 2200 W. Mt. Vernon Ave. along the Menomonee River is “well underway,” Gohsman said.
The all-new brewery had eyed a summer opening, but complications at the building, and with the “structural integrity of the floor” in the brewery building in particular, caused a two-month delay.
“We’re putting roughly $1 million of brewing equipment (into the space),” he said. “We wanted to make sure everything was sound.”
Among the pieces of equipment scheduled to arrive this fall is a canning line. The brewery will regularly be selling beer in cans, not bottles.
“Cans are more environmentally friendly and more economical,” said Gohsman. “Bottom line is it’s better for the beer. Beer’s enemies are light and oxygen. If packaged correctly, cans eliminate the potential for light and oxygen spoilage.”
Gohsman said the core four brews of City Lights beer that will be canned are an amber ale, a brown ale, an IPA and a session IPA. Cans and kegs of these

USA, MI: The world’s largest exclusive retailer of cherry food creations to expand into craft beer industry
|
The world’s largest exclusive retailer of cherry food creations is expanding into the craft beer industry, Petoskey News-Review reported on August 5.
Owners of the Cherry Republic plan to operate a small microbrewery in Charlevoix and at their Glen Arbor, Traverse City and Ann Arbor locations.
The company is awaiting approval from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission before setting a date for the first beer to be released.
The new micro-beer brewing operation will begin small with a focus on beers that follow the tradition of cherry made products the specialty store is known for, said Todd Gyulveszi, beverage manager of Cherry Republic.
“We want our focus to be on beers made with cherries,” Gyulveszi said. “Our intention is to begin small and experiment with our product. If we see an interest we will then test a shandy and stout and play around with a recipe we like until we get it right.”
The operation is small enough that it will not require any major renovation or changes to the current store footprint.
“This will be a very small brewing system,” Gyulveszi said. “It will be very self-contained and once we see how that goes we could look at future use and needs for our brewing operation.”

China: China antitrust authority’s approval of AB InBev and SABMiller merger may significantly affect future transactions
|
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), China’s antitrust enforcement agency for mergers, has conditionally approved the USD108 billion acquisition of SABMiller PLC by Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, in a Decision published July 29, 2016.
The MOFCOM Decision requires divestiture of the 49% interest in China Resources Snow Breweries currently held by SABMiller to the other owner, China Resources Beer. This not surprising; in a 2008 MOFCOM decision, AB InBev was specifically prohibited from acquiring any interest in Snow Breweries, as one of the conditions MOFCOM imposed in InBev NV’s acquisition of Anheuser-Busch. However, this is the first time a MOFCOM published decision has distinguished relevant product markets based on mass brands versus mid-to-high end brands and defined the geographic market as local provinces instead of all of China.
AB InBev made the notification of this transaction on March 8, and the case was initiated on March 29. On March 14, InBev proposed to divest SABMiller’s 49% stake in Snow Breweries to China Resources Beer, the 51% owner. AB InBev may have proposed the remedy even before the case was accepted by MOFCOM because the combined entity would have to divest the interest anyway under the 2008 MOFCOM decision. After several rounds of

Malawi: Carlsberg sells its stake in Carlsberg Malawi to Castel Group
|
Danish brewer Carlsberg A/S on August 10 announced the sale of its stake in Carlsberg Malawi Limited to Castel Group for an undisclosed fee, as it executes its strategy to slim down the company and focus on core businesses.
As part of the deal, Carlsberg has signed a license agreement allowing Carlsberg beer to continue to be produced and sold in Malawi, it said.
"In line with Carlsberg Group's new strategy, we have evaluated all businesses in order to focus our efforts against a narrower and more precisely-defined set of priorities," said Graham Fewkes, executive vice president of Asia.
Earlier this year, the brewer laid out a new strategic plan that it hopes will position it for growth and reverse a lacklustre earnings trend amid pressure from declining eastern European markets and a weak rouble, in particular.
The initiatives adopted include an overhaul of its Russian business, a focus on premium brands in big cities and an expansion of both non-alcoholic drinks and craft beers. The company has merged all its existing profit improvement initiatives into a new single program, which it hopes would generate total net benefits of 1.5 billion to 2 billion Danish kroner ($225 million-$300 million) by 2018.

As the rate of beer drinking declines in Australia, the craft beer industry continues to grow, with large-scale brewing operations, local craft beer gardens and gypsy brewers (contract brewers) carving out their portion of the market.
According to the most recent Australian Health Survey, between 2010 and 2013 alcohol consumption in Australia dropped, with daily drinking at its lowest level since 1991.
IBISWorld senior industry analyst Andrew Ledovskikh said alcohol consumption habits in Australia were changing, contributing to the rise in popularity of boutique brands.
"We definitely are seeing a shift in the way Australians are looking at alcohol," Mr Ledovskikh said.
"People are turning away from traditional beer, so while craft beer is booming, actual beer consumption is dropping.
"Although they are reducing their overall alcohol consumption, craft beer is a little less associated with excess drinking or binge drinking.
"It is seen as a bit more of an experience — an experience that can be enjoyed without the negative connotations of alcohol."
Beer blogger and brewer Darren Magin agreed, saying craft beer encouraged a more

Jamaica: Heineken invests €16 million in a new production line at its factory in Kingston
|
Heineken has invested €16 million in a new production line at its factory in Kingston, used to brew the Jamaican lager Red Stripe, FoodBev.com reported on August 9.
The Dutch company said that the new line would double the plant’s capacity to around 1 million hectoliters – or ten million cases – and would be dedicated to producing beer for the export market.
“With that new capacity, the intention is for the export market mainly so that we will keep our current line completely focused on the domestic market,” Red Stripe Jamaica managing director Ricardo Nuncio was quoted as saying by the Jamaican newspaper The Gleaner. “We expect a big uplift in our volumes in exports and so we feel that we will be using about 50% capacity; but that should be ramped up going forward, say the next three years.”
Heineken acquired Red Stripe from Diageo last year as part of a deal for brand owner Desnoes & Geddes.
At the time, Heineken CEO Jean-François van Boxmeer said the deal would allow it to ensure that it was “optimally structured to support our strategic agenda”.
“Having greater commercial control in the important regions of South-East Asia and the Caribbean will allow us to maximize

India: Beer and specifically craft beer increasingly setting the trend in India
|
Beer, and specifically craft beer, has been increasingly setting the trend in the last few years in India, with even hardened drinkers switching off from hard liquor, The Hans India reported on August 5.
"The beer market is the fastest growing alcohol segment in India by consumption and revenue change, especially with the entry of microbreweries about five years ago," Debjeet Banerjee, who manages the Lagom Kitchen and Brewery in Gurgaon and the Hype nightclub in south Delhi, told said.
"Now, all that you need to do is get yourself to the nearest microbrewery for a couple of glasses of freshly crafted beer that is free of synthetic preservatives and, if made well, packed with flavour, at reasonable prices.
"We are also celebrating the International Beer Day (August 5) with a 1+1 offer on freshly curated beer," Banerjee said.
With the revolution of the microbreweries in the Millennium City, more and more youngsters are opting for freshly-brewed craft beer, ditching the traditional bottles and cans. Also, with the rise in the number of global travellers and health conscious people, "more and more people are developing new tastes, habits and look forward to consuming unique and refreshing beer for a good, stress-free day," Banerjee said.

Burkina Faso: Beer taxes up 5% to 30%
|
Excise duty on beer in Burkina Faso has been increased from 25% to 30%, Agence Ecofin reported on August 6.
Taxes on other alcoholic beverages were increased in April and beer was exempt from the increase at that time.
The country’s government said it does not expect the tax increase to result in higher selling prices for consumers but admits no negotiations with local brewers have been conducted on this matter.
