HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR DRY HOPPING PURPOSES

ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent mass transfer was predicted using two different approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response surface modelling. The methods offer the following advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using response surface methodology was clearly superior as compared to calculating the mass transfer using thermodynamic approximations.

Klie, R.: Feasibility and Optimization of a Novel Desorption/ Absorption Process for Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference, April 2016, Ghent.

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors’ Tenth and Blake Beer Company buys another craft brewery
Tenth and Blake Beer Company, the craft and import division of MillerCoors, announced on August 11 an agreement to acquire a majority interest in Granbury, Texas-based Revolver Brewing. Revolver Brewing is highly regarded in the Texas craft beer community for its flagship brand Blood & Honey, a uniquely approachable craft beer that has quickly become one of the leading craft brands in the Dallas-Fort Worth Market.

“We are excited to be joining the Tenth and Blake family, which shares our commitment to brewing great craft beer,” said Rhett Keisler, Revolver Brewing co-founder and president. “This partnership will allow us to maintain our brewery and operations in Granbury, while providing us with the additional resources to invest in and accelerate the growth of the Revolver brand in Texas.”

Founded in 2012 by father and son Ron and Rhett Keisler, along with seasoned master brewer and cicerone Grant Wood, Revolver Brewing has made incredible waves in the Texas craft beer community in a mere four years. Revolver Brewing calls Granbury home and is currently distributed in Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, Austin and surrounding areas.

Revolver Brewing will operate as a separate business unit of Tenth and Blake. Revolver’s management and employees will continue ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: City Built Brewing Company LLC to launch by early October
City Built Brewing Company LLC said in a statement on August 10 that it had installed its 10-barrel brewing system and plans to be open by early October.

The brewery, planned for 820 Monroe Ave. NW on the ground floor of the 616 Lofts on Monroe mixed-use development, will be the first brewery in Grand Rapids’ Monroe North neighborhood since Founders Brewing Co. moved downtown in 2007.

Much of the beer will consist of fruit-infused ancient ales and the food menu will feature Puerto Rican and “island inspired plates,” according to the statement.

The brewery owners — Edwin Collazo and David Petroelje — previously told MiBiz they project to brew between 320 and 500 barrels of beer per year and create approximately 40 new jobs.

Brewery news USA, KS: Third Place Brewing set to open in Wichita on August 19
Another local brewery is about a week away from opening its doors, and this one is in downtown Wichita.

Third Place Brewing is set to have its grand opening at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19. The brewery is at 630 E. Douglas, which is several doors east of Old Mill Tasty Shop, just before the railroad track overpass.

The brewery is owned by Wichita ear surgeon Tom Kryzer and Jason Algya, a pilot. The two have been brewing beer together for five years and are in the process of getting enough inventory stockpiled to serve their customers.

The brewery’s tap room is similar to what beer fans might be used to from Central Standard Brewing and Hopping Gnome Brewing Company. It has a bar fitted with bright red stools plus several tables with mismatched chairs. A church pew provides seating along one wall, and a Wichita flag adorns the wall. The ceiling is lined with strings of large-bulb lights.

The brewery will not serve food. It will be open Thursday through Saturday nights.

Brewery news USA & Australia: Southern California’s AleSmith Brewing Company to start shipping its beers to Australia
Southern California-based AleSmith Brewing Company is partnering with Experienceit Beverages to launch distribution and sales of its acclaimed beers in Australia. By the end of September, AleSmith’s liquid wares will be available throughout the country, a step made possible by AleSmith’s recent expansion into a 105,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art brewery capable of producing enough beer to supply territories further removed from its home region, TheFullPint.com reported on August 10.

“Australia is a nation of exploration and openness to worldwide influences. Given this, it’s only natural that craft beer has gained a foothold throughout the country, and we are proud to have our award-winning ales as part of that equation,” says AleSmith Director of National Sales James Valles. “Though steeped in the traditions of the countries from which each style hails, our beers are decidedly West Coast in nature, and we look forward to providing Australians with an authentic taste of our Southern California home.”

“For many years, Experienceit has searched out the best brewers in each of the markets we focus on, and for many years our sights have been set on securing the distribution rights to one of California’s best – AleSmith,” says Experienceit Beverages Managing Director Johnny Latta. “We feel their beers ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Craft beer scene expanding in South Korea
South Korea used to be swimming in appallingly bad beer, so it would’ve been hard to believe the country could become the center of Asia’s craft beer scene, or that the movement would be led by a handful of immigrants—or, least of all, that it would all begin in North Korea, Munchies reported on August 11.

“The catalyst for the movement was an article by The Economist,” says Hassan Haider, one of the owners of Magpie Brewing Co. in Seoul. “It said something crazy. It said North Korean beer is better than South Korean beer. People didn’t like that.”

After the Agreed Framework of 1994, which made it harder for North Korea to produce weapons-grade plutonium, the country’s economic ties with the United States improved. Four years later, the Sunshine Policy began and Pyongyang started getting economic aid from the South. Things were humming by 2000, and Kim Jong Il decided it was time for his people to enjoy a cold one.

That summer, the North Korean government sent a small band of brewers and bureaucrats to the English town of Wiltshire to buy the brewery Ushers of Trowbridge, which was known for its quality ales. They dropped about $2 million on the ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Boss of SABMiller’s Carlton & United Breweries departing in October
The boss of Australian beer giant Carlton & United Breweries, Ari Mervis, will be departing in October after five years running the business making brands Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught, AFRWeekend reported on August 12.

Mr Mervis has been at the helm of CUB since late 2011 when he was installed into the role following the A$12.3 billion takeover of Foster's Group.

He has told CUB staff in a note about his impending departure. A CUB spokesman confirmed the changes.

The exit is being prompted by the looming change of control of SABMiller in a global beer mega-merger where Anheuser-Busch InBev is buying out SABMiller in a A$145 billion global deal.

The note from Mr Mervis said that "as a consequence of the acquisition I will relinquish my position and will be leaving the company at change of control".

His exit comes as CUB on October 1 will resume its position as the No.1 player in the A$14 billion Australian beer market after it assumes the distribution rights for the biggest-selling imported beer brand in Australia, Corona.

CUB will take over the rights for Corona from rival brewer Lion, which is owned by Japan's Kirin Corporation. Lion will receive up to A$300 million in compensation ...More info on site
