HOPS DO NOT NECESSARILY
NEED TO TOUCH BEER FOR
DRY HOPPING PURPOSES
ABSTRACT
A German research team that came up with the idea of
extracting hop aroma into beer by applying a combined
desorption/absorption process. The process-dependent
mass transfer was predicted using two different
approaches: a thermodynamic approach, and response
surface modelling. The methods offer the following
advantages: no beer losses, no clarification steps
needed, potential reuse of hops for bittering. Using
response surface methodology was clearly superior
as compared to calculating the mass transfer using
thermodynamic approximations.

Transferring Hop Volatiles into Beer, poster presentation at the Trends in Brewing Conference,

USA: Kirin to deepen partnership with AB InBev in hopes to increase US sales
|
Kirin Holdings will deepen an American sales partnership with Anheuser-Busch InBev, tapping into the larger beverage group's distributor network in hopes of gaining more market share for its Kirin Ichiban brew, Nikkei Asian Review reported on August 18.
Tokyo-based Kirin aims to double its beer sales volume in the U.S. by 2021.
Kirin works with the world's biggest beer company in Japan and abroad. In Japan, AB InBev licenses Kirin to brew and sell such beers as Budweiser. In the U.S., it produces and sells Ichiban for its Japanese partner.
With their U.S. licensing agreement up for renewal at year-end, the two companies are planning changes. Employees of Kirin Brewery of America will be transferred to AB InBev under the new arrangement. There, they will form a special marketing team for Ichiban.
Ichiban will take its place alongside other priority brands in AB InBev's import lineup, such as Stella Artois and Hoegaarden. Until now, the brew with the mythical Chinese beast on its label - sold as Ichiban Shibori in Japan - has gotten lost among the 300-plus beer brands that AB InBev imports into the U.S.
In return, AB InBev will get a bigger cut than before of earnings on each beer sold. Kirin

USA: MillerCoors to invests $60 mln to expand its Virginia brewery
|
Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe announced on August 19 that MillerCoors, a joint venture between SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Company, will invest $60 million to expand its Shenandoah brewery, located in Rockingham County, WHSV reported.
The brewery is the newest in the MillerCoors network and is used to service Northeast markets. The project is slated to create 27 new jobs for the area.
“Virginia continues to solidify its status as a leading state for the brewing industry,” said Governor McAuliffe. “MillerCoors has been present in Rockingham County for nearly 30 years, providing quality jobs. The Shenandoah Valley offers the ideal business climate and workforce needed to brew world-class beer that consumers can enjoy all over the country and world. I am thrilled to have MillerCoors as a partner in our work to build a new Virginia economy.”
“MillerCoors is proud to partner with Virginia on this expansion,” said MillerCoors’ Director of Media Relations Jon Stern. “Our Elkton facility has played a key role in allowing us to efficiently deliver high quality beer to Northeast markets. We look forward to continued success and growth in Rockingham County as we expand our state-of-the-art Shenandoah brewery.”

USA, IN: People’s Brewing Co. to open a microbrewery in Lebanon, IN
|
Another new business will soon open on Lebanon’s downtown square, replacing an old one and bringing with it a product unique to the immediate area, Lebanon Reporter said on August 18.
People’s Brewing Co., a Lafayette-based craft beer brewing operation, will open a microbrewery and taproom at the former French/Hoosier fusion restaurant, Bijou, 111 W. Main St., that occupied the space for nearly 17 years.
“We are excited to be the first brewery in Boone County and Lebanon and think we are blessed to find such a great spot on the town square,” said People’s Brewing Co. partner Brett Vander Plaats in a press release.
People’s Brewmaster Chris Johnson said the brewery’s transition to a Lebanon outpost would be good for both community and business. The operation specializes in small-batch recipes and plans to be up and running sometime in October.
“For us, it’s nice to make a reach outside of our market … to get a retail establishment and grow our brand out from our source and Lebanon was perfect setting,” Johnson said. “We like the community and its push to make advancements in town. We also thought it was a beautiful downtown, and stars aligned.”

USA, MD: Hysteria Brewing Co. hopes to open in Columbia by next February
|
Sometimes hanging out and drinking a few beers with friends can lead to great things.
For Rich Gue, Geoff Lopes and Jordan Baney, brainstorming over a few beers in 2006 led to starting Vaper's Knoll, a Columbia-based e-cigarette flavor company. Now, looking to diversify even more, the partnership is opening up Hysteria Brewing Co. in Columbia with a target opening timeframe by next February, Baltimore Business Journal reported on August 18.
The idea really began back in college where Gue started getting into craft beers and home brewing his own product. When the group was looking to invest in another business venture, Gue said beer seemed like the direction to go in.
"Our company was founded on beer pretty much, so me being a home brewer I wanted to go make beer," he said. "It was a crazy thought in the very beginning and we never thought we would do it, but we decided to try it. We didn't want to put all our eggs in one basket with [Vaper's Knoll]."
Hysteria Brewing will be housed next to one of the two Vaper's Knoll stores at 9570 Berger Road. Hysteria Brewing will take over suites J and K with about 10,000 square feet of

USA, IN: Moontown Brewing Company to occupy Whitestown High School’s 102-year-old school gymnasium
|
These days most buildings can be transformed into just about anything imaginable and Whitestown’s first brewing company is doing just that – breathing new life into a historic high school, WRTV Indianapolis reported on August 17.
Moontown Brewing Company will occupy Whitestown High School’s 102-year-old school gymnasium and feature six house brews and four to six seasonal offerings.
The brewery will be just steps from the new Big 4 Trail that will eventually connect all of Boone County.
Despite the building’s rough edges, developers can’t wait to add a bit of charm to the 10,000 sq. ft. area. Construction will begin this winter and the plan is to open in early summer 2017.
“It’s just such a terrific space,” said commercial builder and one of the owners, Pete Mattingly. “It has so much potential and we’re very excited to see what it will evolve into.”
Mattingly and his home brewing partners have dreamed of opening a brewery for more than a decade.
That dream became a reality when they won the 2015 Home Brew Competition at the Whitestown Brew Fest.
Soon after, Mattingly began speaking with people working at the Town of Whitestown and Boone County Economic Development Corporation about opening a brewery.
The $1 million investment will

USA, CT: Couple launching Hog River Brewing Company in Hartford on August 20
|
In 2008, Connecticut native Benjamin Braddock was an insurance professional, feeling wholly unsatisfied with his career. He found himself looking for the perfect job, he said, hoping to follow in the footsteps of entrepreneurs in his family.
Home brewing was something that really stoked his passion, and he considered making a go of it as a vocation, looking toward opening a brewery someday, Hartford Courant reported on August 18.
His wife, Joy, supported the goal, but urged him to learn the ropes professionally before he made the leap.
"[I said,] you need to get industry experience; not only just for the knowledge, but for the connections," she said.
Braddock escaped the corporate cubicle and spent four years climbing the ladder from "keg cleaner to brewer" at Bloomfield's Thomas Hooker Brewery, also completing a brewing science and technology certificate at the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago. While later working as head brewer at Willimantic Brewing Company, Braddock spent his free time planning his dream: a business of his very own.
On Saturday, Aug. 20, more than three years after officially putting pen to paper to write a business plan, Benjamin and Joy will open Hog River Brewing Company in Hartford's Parkville neighborhood. The 3,700 square-foot

Azerbaijan: Baltika-Baku reports 25% decline in H1 beer output
|
Baltika-Baku, which dominates on the beer market of Azerbaijan with a 75% share, reduced its production by 25% yoy in the 1st half of 2016, abc.az reported on August 19.
The company, part of Carlsberg Group, estimates that the beer market fell as a whole by 30% yoy because of the difficult macroeconomic situation and the impact of legislative regulations, which undoubtedly affected the profitability of the company.
"The manat devaluation (by about 90% against 2015) and the subsequent falling purchasing power of the population have become the main factors of declined sales. On the other hand, short-term effect of the law banning sale of excisable goods for cash, which led to stagnation of the entire sector during the first days of January 2016, has showed the technological unpreparedness of the market and caused an abrupt suspension of sales, after which the supply chain was restored only at the end of February," the company emphasized.
Baltika-Baku, however, notes that despite the steps being taken to promote business and the industry in general, the law banning cash payments for excisable products and introducing mandatory prepayment will create additional obstacles for the industry.
"We back government’s steps to ensure transparency of trade turnover. However, the technical

New Zealand: Tasman hop crop value projected to grow to NZ$30 mln a year by 2020
|
The value of the Tasman hop crop is projected to grow to about NZ$30 million a year by 2020, driven by a rapidly growing craft beer industry in New Zealand and abroad, The Stuff.co.nz reported on August 19.
Staig & Smith resource management consultant Jackie McNae along with New Zealand Hops Limited chief executive Doug Donelan and the company's finance and commercial manager Steve Wilson, have urged Tasman District Council to give top priority to a review and expansion of the rural industrial zone along Blackbyre Rd to help with that growth.
McNae told a panel of councillors on August 19 at a hearing of submissions on proposed Plan Change 60 of the Tasman Resource Management Plan that Tasman was the only district in New Zealand growing hops on a commercial scale. More than 425 ha of hops was under production with plans for "significant expansion". The hop crop was projected to increase to about 600 ha by 2020, boosting its gross value from NZ$19 million to about NZ$30 mln.
After the hearing, Donelan stressed that total did not include any of the "significant" downstream value of the product.
McNae told the hearing panel that hops from the district were "highly valued" by craft

India: Carlsberg India managed to more than double its business during Michael Jensen’s three-year leadership
|
For 54-year-old Michael Jensen, who heads Carlsberg in India, it's not easy to sell products that mostly appeal to consumers half his age. Yet, in his three-year stint as the chief executive of the Danish brewer in India, he has managed to more than double the business to exceed Rs 1,000 crore in calendar year 2015, The Economic Times reported on August 19.
"It's not difficult if you are little young at heart. But you want to remind yourself constantly that what I know might not be what other people want. So listen to consumers," said Jensen. So far, he has his ears to ground. For a man with an MSc in Marketing, Market Analysis and Consumer Behaviour and another in International Business, Trade, and Tax Law, that shouldn't be difficult, even if the country is as diverse as India.
Unlike most other markets, where Carlsberg's top seller is the milder version of lager, Jensen has been focusing on brands such as Tuborg Strong and Elephant in India because strong beer accounts for 80% of country's overall sales volume of 300 million cases.
His bet seems to be paying off — while the Copenhagen headquartered firm is

India: Ban on liquor in state of Bihar forces Carlsberg to consider pulling out
|
Michael Jensen, CEO of Carlsberg India, has termed India as the most difficult market in the world, and you can't blame him for that, since Jensen has personally experienced how politics can make business run on its fingers, making investors vary of future projects, Business Insider India reported on August 19.
It was three years ago that Bihar CM Nitish Kumar had wooed Carlsberg to invest in the state, thus convincing it to set up a $25 million plant near Patna in 2014. However, after he was re-elected last year, he went on to ban liquor in the state, which led to the company's revenues falling and forcing it to consider pulling out, since there was no backup plan for this unexpected move.
"It was a sizeable market and investment but they decided to do prohibition in 12 hours," Jensen said.
Other than Carlsberg, Diageo Plc, United Breweries and Molson Coors are also worried about the ban since they have been running more than 70 distilleries and breweries in Bihar for over a decade now, which is an ideal market for these liquor companies, offering an abundance of raw materials (barley and wheat) and cheap labour.
In Bihar, sale of

Belgium: The Belgian Home-brewers Association adding new members every week
|
In a country where some 200 breweries produce well over 1,000 different beers, surely no one is considering brewing their own?
Wrong.
The Belgian Home-brewers Association, set up in June, already has 60 members and more are signing up each week, keen to exchange tips and get cheaper ingredients such as malt and hops by getting together to buy in bulk, Daily Mail reported on August 19.
"It's the taste of discovery, the taste of a well-made product, brewing is my passion," said Axel Henrard, the club's head, standing next to an intricate set-up of pots, heaters and hoses at his amateur brewery in a barn in southern Belgium.
Arnaud Laloy, 29, who started a tiny brewery in his garage, said: "I saw all the small breweries and thought, well, if they can do it as well as the big brewers I'm quite interested in trying it myself."
Members of the group gather online to discuss fermenting temperatures, brewing equipment and recipes, though Henrard, a psychologist by day, insists a recipe is no use without knowing how to brew.
"It's not the recipe which makes the beer," he said. "It is the way in which the brewer interacts with his equipment."
